Brad Stevens provides injury update on Gordon Hayward’s rapid recovery

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has been much improved from last season.

After telling reporters that he feels that he’s ahead of schedule in his injury rehab, Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward has yet another update on his progress from a hand surgery that repaired a fractured fourth metacarpal in his left hand.

This time though, the update would be provided by his head coach, Brad Stevens (per The Athletic’s Jared Weiss).

“[Hayward’s] able to run up and down the court,” Stevens explains. “He’s able to do non-contact drills and he’ll have another meeting on Monday over FaceTime with his doctor to look at the healing process, discuss what’s next… we’ll know more from there.”

Having sustained the injury on Nov. 9 against the San Antonio Spurs and opting to have surgery just a couple of days later, Hayward — who looks much improved from this time last season — should be about halfway through his original six-week timeline for full recovery.

The team has went just 6-4 in his absence while having Jayson Tatum, Kemba Walker and Jaylen Brown available, so his playmaking and decision-making is clearly missed by Boston. However, the Celtics are unlikely to rush him back just to right the ship; they didn’t do it with Walker’s neck sprain or Brown’s infection.

Instead, Boston will need to continue to make due without one of their top players and Stevens will have to have his wits about him as he tries to mesh the volume scoring efforts of Hayward, Brown, Walker and Tatum.

A one-time All-Star, Hayward has averaged 18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 0.8 steals per game while shooting 55.5% from the field and 43.3% from three this season.

Report: Gordon Hayward rehab ‘ahead of schedule’

After an initial diagnosis of a four-to-six week recovery for a broken hand sustained against the San Antonio Spurs Nov. 9, Gordon Hayward is optimistic about a potential early return.

Boston Celtics All-Star wing Gordon Hayward believes he is healing faster than initially anticipated from a hand injury sustained in early November.

The injury, a broken metatarsal sustained in a victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 9, was considered to require four to six weeks to heal after undergoing surgery three weeks ago.

The Butler product is pleased with the progress he’s experiencing in rehabilitating the broken bone, already finding himself capable of light dribbling and shooting, per MassLive’s Tom Westerholm.

“I feel like I’m ahead of schedule,” Hayward explained. “I mean, it’s hard to say with these things exactly what the timeline is. But, like I said, I feel good, and most importantly I’ve been able to continue with my leg work and stuff like that, so that’s really important.”

Celtics fans were delighted by a short clip showing the forward knocking down shots at the team’s practice facility earlier in the week, and Hayward seems in a similar humor about his seeming speedy recovery.

“I’m able to kind of lightly dribble right now and shoot. I’m trying to just build some strength back in the left hand a little bit … So, I mean, I think all this considered, I feel like I’m progressing really well, and we’ll see where it’s at.”

Even still, the ten-year veteran is hesitant to say when he feels like he might be ready to return to action. Understandable, given how anticipation for his return contributed to last season’s assortment of problems derailing a highly-anticipated campaign.

“It’s kind of hard to put an exact timetable on some of these things, because some of it is, once the bone has healed, how much pain can you handle and how does your hand respond to workouts or getting hit a little bit, different things like that,” Hayward offered. “So I think I’m doing really well so far, and hopefully that can continue.

With the Celtics having stuck with their winning ways for the most part over his absence over most of November and the team heading into a comparatively easy stretch of the schedule, there is little reason to rush the injured Hayward back.

But after missing nearly an entire season and recovering much of last year, it would be no surprise for the former Bulldog to also want to get back in the mix at his earliest possible opportunity.

WATCH: Gordon Hayward gets shots up on court after practice

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward will be out for another four weeks.

In a video provided by NBC Sports Boston’s A. Sherrod Blakely, Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward can be seen taking three-point attempts on the team’s practice court — without any need to protect his hand — just two weeks after fracturing his left court metacarpal against the San Antonio Spurs.

After having a surgery to repair the fracture, Hayward was given a six-week timeline to return to the court. It would appear that Hayward is ahead of schedule and in part due to him keeping up one of his favorite hobbies while he was out: gaming.

According to Hayward, playing video games helped keep his fingers active and subsequently has been a factor in his recovery.

Hayward should still be out for another four weeks if he adheres to his original timeline. That would place his return near Boston’s Christmas Day game against the wounded Golden State Warriors.

Before going out with his injury, Hayward was stringing together strong performances and looking like a key player for the Celtics with his decision-making and playmaking ability.

Now two years removed from fracturing his leg and dislocating his ankle against the Cleveland Cavaliers in an injury that’s still hard to watch, Hayward has averaged  18.9 points, 7.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 0.8 steals per game this season while shooting 55.5% from the field and 44.3% from three.

Despite the buzz about Boston, don’t expect trades any time soon

Dubbed “the spiritual successors to the Warriors”, will the Boston Celtics iteration of switchy defenders and high-powered offense be enough to succeed in the postseason?

[jwplayer IvtenmSm-z6KDnl0B]

Don’t expect a trade to upgrade the Boston Celtics coming any time soon, particularly while the team sticks to its winning ways.

Coming into the season, the team’s big man rotation was widely seen to be a step below what the team would need to compete for a title, with larger, more skilled big men on the Philadelphia 76ers and Milwaukee Bucks looking like insuperable barriers to a deep postseason run.

One 10-game win streak later and those qualms have subsided significantly, particularly with Boston showing it could bounce back against the equally-surprising Phoenix Suns and former center Aron Baynes on Nov. 18.

There’s still legitimate reason to doubt the team’s current frontcourt will have what it takes to get past some of the better teams in the playoffs, where opponents will have more time and impetus to gameplan ways to use size against the team.

As the Ringer’s Jonathan Tjarks notes, the Celtics elevation of two third-overall picks (in consecutive NBA Drafts), Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, to trusted top offensive options and combining them defensive tour de force Marcus Smart (who can switch onto even the strongest and quickest bigs in the league) has somehow worked.

And not only worked, but created one of the more potent offensive two-man lineups in the league despite Tatum’s up-and-down nights and overall development.

“The Celtics are this year’s closest thing to the spiritual heirs of the Warriors,” explains Tjarks.

“They don’t have the same star power, but their key players all fit into similar roles. Kemba Walker, like Steph Curry, is a smaller guard who can bomb 3s and play on and off the ball, and they surround him with big wings who can defend multiple positions, space the floor, and create their own shot. Their best lineup, when everyone is healthy, doesn’t feature anyone above 6-foot-8: Kemba, Smart, Tatum, Brown, and Hayward.”

Tatum’s showing signs of putting things together and considering much of this has been going on without All-Star forward Gordon Hayward — out until December with a broken hand — while Kemba Walker has quietly inserted himself into the fringes of the MVP conversation.

Perhaps the wins shouldn’t be so surprising.

But the skepticism about the frontcourt remains, and quite possibly for good reason. While the Warriors indeed did not have a dominant big functioning in a rim-protecting, pick-setting, back-to-the-basket sort of center anchoring their formidable defenses, they also had a much more lethal array of shooters, arguably the greatest ever assembled in recent years.

Can Boston hope to compete for a title with such a notable step down on the offensive end? If not, is there a player who makes sense who could be had on the trade market?

According to senior ESPN writer Brian Windhorst, if there is, it won’t involve any core players — Walker, Hayward, Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum or even Marcus Smart — from the team’s core. Smart and Hayward have been floated often as potential options in recent months.

That leaves the comparatively smaller salaries of players like veterans like Daniel Theis, Enes Kanter, and rookies Romeo Langford and Vincent Poirier, all of whom make $5 million per season or less, and all but Langford happen to be bigs shoring up the already- shaky frontcourt rotation.

Finding a player worth moving so many contracts (or on a deal so cheap) that makes sense to pull the trigger on will be no easy task and with so many new signings for the team in the offseason, any such deal would likely have to wait until at least Dec. 15, when certain recently-signed deals begin to become tradable according to league rules.

For now, the strategy of the “spiritual heirs of the Warriors” will be to refine and evolve the Dubs approach to winning while small, strangely zagging back to what’s worked in the past as East contemporaries ‘zig’ big.

Will it be enough to stay in the conversation of belonging in the league’s elite?

We’ll just have to wait to find out.

How to Watch Boston Celtics this season live online.

The Boston Celtics experienced plenty of roster turnover heading into the 2019-20 NBA season, with key players leaving for other teams, but also joining the squad. The question for the Celtics this season will be whether or not head coach Brad Stevens can pull all of those pieces together to create a winner in Boston once again.

The key to this season for the Celtics will be Kemba Walker, who was acquired in the offseason following his time with the Charlotte Hornets. Walker is a proven leader on the court and one capable of scoring in a variety of ways. More important than his impact as a player will be his impact from a team chemistry perspective, as he replaces Kyrie Irving at the point this year.

Also interesting will be how the Celtics replace Al Horford. Horford was one of the key rebounders for the Celtics last season, and his ability to spread the floor and shoot as a big was key to the Celtics offensively. The C’s will need to take more of a team focused approach to rebounding now that Horford has left for a division rival in Philadelphia. A big blow to begin the season was Gordon Hayward fracturing his hand just a few games into the season. It’s not yet known how long he’ll be out for, but he’s an important piece to the team.

As a whole, the Celtics have plenty of talent and have as good a chance as any team to win the Eastern Conference. The question now is whether or not they can reach their potential.

Report: Gordon Hayward out for six weeks after hand surgery

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward’s absence can only be mitigated by a team-wide effort.

Per an official announcement from the Boston Celtics, forward Gordon Hayward underwent a successful surgery to repair a fourth metacarpal fracture in his left hand and will be out for approximately six weeks. With that timeline, the earliest he should be expected back is Dec. 25 against the Toronto Raptors.

Hayward sustained the injury on Nov. 9 against the San Antonio Spurs, leaving the game late in the second quarter.

In Hayward’s absence, Celtics head coach Brad Stevens has a myriad of options he can use to replace the all-around skillset that the veteran possessed but knows that it’ll be difficult to replace his savvy.

Against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday, Boston started the fiery Marcus Smart and decided to play rookie guard Javonte Green off the bench to help mitigate the loss of Hayward’s slashing ability.

Two talented teams meet in Boston Monday when Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks visit TD Garden to take on the surging Celtics. While it’s certainly way too early to proclaim anything wild, at the rate these two teams have opened the season, we could possibly be seeing an NBA Finals preview.

The Mavs have enjoyed a bright start to the season, opening with a very nice 6-3 record. The story of their opening stretch has to be the play of second-year phenom Luka Doncic. The Slovenian guard is percentage points away from averaging a triple-double through nine games this season. With 28.1 PPG, 10.4 RPG and 9.2 APG to his name, the youngster is becoming one of the must-see names in the entire league. If he continues on this pace, there’s a strong chance he’ll be mentioned heavily when the talk of NBA MVP heats up later in the season. Doncic put up 24 points and 14 rebounds in a 138-122 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday.

While Dallas has impressed early on, the Celtics are only one of two teams with just one loss so far this season. A 7-1 start has to be extremely satisfying for Boston fans after losing their most high-profile player, Kyrie Irving, via free agency in the offseason. A 135-115 win over the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday will do nothing to quell their enthusiasm. Jalen Brown’s 30 points along with Kemba Walker’s 26-point effort led the way for the C’s. However, it wasn’t all good news. Gordon Hayward’s unfortunate injury streak continued in the game, fracturing his hand in the win. It’s not yet known how long he’ll be out for, but he’ll be sorely missed. Hayward averaged 20.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists through seven games.

Star forward Gordon Hayward to have surgery, timetable unknown

Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward’s dynamic skillset will be difficult to replace.

[jwplayer wiy0oUOX-z6KDnl0B]

Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston Celtics forward Gordon Hayward’s agent Mark Bartelstein has announced that his star client will have surgery to repair a fracture in his left hand and will have his recovery timetable updated after the procedure.

Hayward fractured his hand — specifically, the fourth metacarpal of his left hand, per Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith — against the San Antonio Spurs on Nov. 9. However, surgery was only an option and the 10-year veteran would visit a hand specialist on Monday to determine the best course of action.

In the seven healthy games he played this season, Hayward averaged 20.3 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game while shooting 56.4% from the field and 44.4% from three. The Celtics are well aware that they’ll miss Hayward’s versatility, shooting and decision-making but hope to mitigate his loss through team effort and the ‘next man up’ mentality.

Whether that next man is Romeo Langford, Javonte Green or simply the synthesizing kD multiple players’ skillsets, Boston will look to continue their stellar start.

One that’s left them with the league’s best record early in the season.

Injury report: Enes Kanter cleared to play for first time since season opener

Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter is finally ready to return from a knee contusion that kept him out for nearly three weeks of action.

[jwplayer wiy0oUOX-z6KDnl0B]

If it seems like Enes Kanter hasn’t played much for the Boston Celtics this season, that’s because he hasn’t.

After signing a two-year deal with the Celtics over the offseason, seeking to team up with Kemba Walker and play for Boston’s revered franchise, the nine-year veteran has been out since the team’s regular season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers on Oct. 23 due to a left knee contusion.

Kanter, who started the game in a rather unexpected move by Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, recorded 12 points, six rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes.

The team has been hopeful Kanter would be cleared since last week but it wouldn’t be until Monday,  Nov. 11 — the day of Boston’s nationally-televised matchup against the Dallas Mavericks — that Kanter would be cleared by the Celtics’ medical staff.

Per the Athletic’s Jay King, Kanter told reporters that the training staff had cleared him after shootaround, “so [he’s] good to go tonight.”

Kanter may not start against the Mavericks considering he’s been out for nearly three weeks and the Celtics have won seven straight games without him.

However, with Gordon Hayward’s scoring punch set to be missing from the starting lineup for a few weeks after the versatile forward fractured his hand against the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday, Stevens may want to have Kanter in the starting unit as an experienced offensive threat in place of the longtime Utah Jazz star.

The HoopsHype Daily: The Knicks are a mess yet again

After falling to 2-8 on the season, key Knicks executives held an impromptu press conference where they said a lot but nothing at the same time.

FIZDALE’S SEAT GETTING TOASTY: On Sunday, the New York Knicks dropped their eighth game in 10 tries, falling to the Cleveland Cavaliers 108-87 in a game that wasn’t even as close as the final scoreline would indicate. Things got interesting after the contest, when two of the team’s top decision makers, president Steve Mills and general manager Scott Perry, held an awkward impromptu press conference where they declared their displeasure with New York’s progress this season while maintaining their faith in the plan they put together and in their head coach, David Fizdale. Really, though, it felt like the two executives said a whole lot of nothing, making the entire exercise rather pointless.

Regardless, it goes without saying that if the Knicks continue going down the porous path they currently find themselves on, Fizdale, who feels the pressure, will be gone. At the same time, is that really going to change anything? The team’s management had a terrible offseason, no matter how the Knicks try to spin it, one where they failed to land a marquee free agent despite having loads of cap space, and responded by signing multiple middling power forwards and no point guards. Basically, years and years of poor decision-making out of New York’s front office continued in the summer of 2019.

And what’s the common thread that all of those poor Knicks offseasons have? They have pretty much all occurred over the last 20 years, when James Dolan became the team’s owner. It’s pretty clear what New York’s principal problem is, and until that problem is no longer there, the team won’t escape this purgatory they’ve been in for multiple decades.

David Fizdale is now 19-73 as Knicks head coach.

ON AAU AND LOAD MANAGEMENT: HoopsHype spoke to various NBA players to find out their thoughts on whether young athletes getting overworked during their AAU days is leading to a need for load management when they get older. Some very interesting comments here from Zach LaVine, Myles Turner and others.

ANOTHER OFF-COURT WAITERS INCIDENT: Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters suffered a panic attack on Thursday during the team’s flight from Phoenix to Los Angeles. The cause of the panic attack? A weed gummy given to him by a teammate.

🤦 It’s far from Waiters’ first issue this season, giving Miami little choice but to suspend the mercurial 2-guard for 10 games without pay. This is Waiters’ second suspension of the young season. Waiters never playing another minute for the Heat is quickly becoming a very real possibility.

SUPERMAN BACK IN THE DUNK CONTEST? Dwight Howard is playing the most impactful basketball he’s played in years. We broke down his game here. Howard is feeling so good, in fact, that he told TMZ he’s thought about doing the dunk contest this season. Howard has one dunk contest victory to his name, which came back in 2008.

LUKA MVP CAMPAIGN: Based on his play so far, there’s a very good chance Mavs guard Luka Doncic receives MVP votes at the end of the season. He would be the youngest international player ever to achieve that, beating Hakeem Olajuwon.

CURRY RETURN: Brandon Payne, Stephen Curry’s personal trainer, spoke to NBC Sports’ Tom Haberstroh and told him that Curry wants to return this season, but it’ll depend on how his rehab goes.

HAYWARD GOES DOWN… AGAIN: Celtics swingman Gordon Hayward, who was playing the best basketball he has since his brutal leg injury, got hurt again this weekend, fracturing his left hand against the Spurs. A doctor who spoke to the Boston Sports Journal says he could be out for at least four weeks depending on whether he has surgery or not.

RONDO’S SEASON DEBUT POSTPONED: Rajon Rondo was supposed to make his return against the Raptors on Sunday, but had his season debut postponed yet again. Once he does return, one has to wonder how much playing time he gets. Head coach Frank Vogel will have to determine how much he values Rondo’s defense and ability to run the offense versus his poor three-point shooting.

STAR SET TO RETURN: Pistons forward Blake Griffin has been listed as probable for Detroit’s game against the Timberwolves on Monday. It would be his first game action since April 22.

POTENTIAL TOP PICK INELIGIBLE: On Friday, the NCAA announced 2020 potential No. 1 pick James Wiseman has been deemed ineligible. If he doesn’t play again this season, it’ll be interesting to note how much that affects his draft stock.

GETTING PAPER: According to a report, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has a new five-year contract with the company, one that will pay him $8 million per year. That’s more than all but 150 NBA players, and as much as Lou Williams makes on his Clippers deal.
