Marcus Smart, Kemba Walker OUT vs. Atlanta; Trae Young now probable

The Boston Celtics may be without their two best ball-handlers Monday as they face Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks; the team has recalled two way point guard Tremont Waters to help.

The Boston Celtics with have to face the Atlanta Hawks without their two primary ball handlers in All-Star point guard Kemba Walker (knee) and defensive nightmare Marcus Smart (quad contusion).

They’ll also have to to do it facing Atlanta All-Star point guard Trae Young, who has been upgraded to probable against the Celtics after a recent ankle sprain, according to Sports Radio 92.9’s Mike Conti.

Boston should still be able to handle the Hawks — one of the league’s worst teams — without the duo, though their opponent has beaten teams like the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers when those teams took Atlanta for granted.

To that end, Boston has recalled two way floor general Tremont Waters to help bolster the backcourt rotation, and will likely lean on veteran forward Gordon Hayward to help with distribution as well.

The Celtics could see big man Enes Kanter return to action in Atlanta, who has been recuperating a bruised knee.

Fellow center Robert Williams reportedly had a favorable scan on his injured hip on Friday, and will be re-evaluated for a return soon according to the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach.

Kemba Walker OUT vs. 76ers; Al Horford to play

The Boston Celtics will have to try and steal a win vs. the Philadelphia 76ers at home without Kemba Walker, Enes Kanter and Robert Williams Saturday.

The Boston Celtics will face the Philadelphia 76ers without one of their best weapons against them, as All-Star starter Kemba Walker will miss the early February contest with knee soreness, reports ESPN’s Tim Bontemps.

The UConn product will miss at least the next two games with the knee problem, and while Philly is going to be without starting shooting guard Josh Richardson, the loss puts Boston at a further disadvantage.

Walker has been one of the Celtics most potent counters to the length and size of the Sixers, and with the team down two key frontcourt players in centers Enes Kanter (knee) and Robert Williams III (hip), injuries may play a major role in the outcome of tonight’s match.

Boston has called up two way center Tacko Fall to help in that regard, so we may see some unusual lineups deployed in an effort to glean potential postseason strategies as much as compensate for hurt players.

Either way it ends up going, the Celtics will have their work cut out for them taking on the 76ers at the Garden Saturday night.

Kemba Walker OUT vs Wizards Monday; Romeo Langford questionable

There’s something going around the Boston Celtics lately, with All-NBA guard Kemba Walker being ruled out of Monday’s tilt with Washington, and rookie Romeo Langford questionable as well.

It’s that time of year where it seems like you can catch a cold — or worse — just from looking at someone, and the Boston Celtics are evidently no exception.

Starting point guard Kemba Walker has missed the team’s last two contest due to flu-like symptoms, and has been ruled out of Monday’s game against the Washington Wizards Sunday afternoon.

To make matters worse, rookie wing Romeo Langford may miss the game as well, presumably dealing with whatever has been going around the roster in recent days.

First-year dunk machine Javonte Green was ill but available for the Dec. 20 Chicago Bulls win, and Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, and Jayson Tatum have also all recently dealt with (probably unrelated) illness in recent weeks.

With a busy January schedule mostly filled with teams possessing a losing record, the Celtics can afford to rest ill players.

Even so, Boston should be thankful for the competent depth the front office has assembled — many a team in the league would be reeling from so many sick bodies.

Marcus Smart likely to return vs Toronto; only Timelord, Poirier out

It seems Boston Celtics veteran guard Marcus Smart’s long absence might be ending tonight, as only centers Robert Williams III and Vincent Poirier remain out vs. the Toronto Raptors.

The Boston Celtics are inching their way back towards full health, with Marcus Smart a conspicuous absence for today’s pregame injury report ahead of the team’s home rematch with the Toronto Raptors.

The Celtics list only centers Robert Williams III and Vincent Poirier as out for the contest, the former for a left hip edema and the latter a broken pinkie finger.

The Texan defensive menace has missed several weeks of games due to a severe eye infection that threatened his long-term visual health on the heels of other illness and injury before the ocular infection waylaid the Oklahoma State product.

Williams and Poirier may return in January pending how well they heal, the Frenchman closer to the end of the month if his six-week recovery timetable proves accurate, and Timelord will be due for a re-assessment earlier in the month for his edema.

Presumably, Smart will return to action against the Raptors this evening, who are facing their own injury crisis with Most Improved Player candidate Pascal Siakam, veteran big Marc Gasol and shooting guard Norman Powell all likely scratches for the contest.

How to Watch Boston Celtics this season live online.

The Boston Celtics experienced plenty of roster turnover heading into the 2019-20 NBA season, with key players leaving for other teams, but also joining the squad. The question for the Celtics this season will be whether or not head coach Brad Stevens can pull all of those pieces together to create a winner in Boston once again.

The key to this season for the Celtics will be Kemba Walker, who was acquired in the offseason following his time with the Charlotte Hornets. Walker is a proven leader on the court and one capable of scoring in a variety of ways. More important than his impact as a player will be his impact from a team chemistry perspective, as he replaces Kyrie Irving at the point this year.

Also interesting will be how the Celtics replace Al Horford. Horford was one of the key rebounders for the Celtics last season, and his ability to spread the floor and shoot as a big was key to the Celtics offensively. The C’s will need to take more of a team focused approach to rebounding now that Horford has left for a division rival in Philadelphia. A big blow to begin the season was Gordon Hayward fracturing his hand just a few games into the season. It’s not yet known how long he’ll be out for, but he’s an important piece to the team.

As a whole, the Celtics have plenty of talent and have as good a chance as any team to win the Eastern Conference. The question now is whether or not they can reach their potential.
