Roll Tide Wire staff predictions for Alabama vs. Cincinnati

Roll Tide Wire staff predictions for Alabama’s semifinal matchup with Cincinnati!

The playoff semifinals are so close you can almost taste it. Alabama and Cincinnati are set to battle on New Year’s Eve for a chance to play for the national championship on Jan. 10.

Alabama is currently a 13.5 point favorite over the Bearcats and it is hard to find many avenues in which Cincinnati can pull off the upset.

As my good friend and site editor, AJ Spurr, so eloquently puts it, ”It’s now time for everyone’s least anticipated part of the day! My unqualified, unwarranted and unsolicited score prediction.”

Staff predicts the game

Alabama (-13.5) Record ATS Winner Record Overall
AJ Spurr Alabama 6-4 Alabama 9-1
Stacey Blackwood Alabama 6-4 Alabama 8-1
Layne Gerbig Alabama 5-5 Alabama 8-1

I have been a Group of 5 advocate for years, so this one stings a bit. Cincinnati is a very solid team that would, in my mind, be ranked this season as a Power 5 team. This game carries implications well beyond a national championship, it tells the nation that playing in a conference outside of the main five doesn’t equate to less talent. That being said, the Bearcats are tasked with making such a statement against the poster child for the game. No doubt they come out swinging, but how many punches land? My guess is not too many, but enough to prove that the program rightfully deserves the respect that’s been withheld in recent years.

Alabama 45, Cincinnati 17

Despite the injuries and COVID distractions, Alabama seems to be more focused than ever. Cincinnati just doesn’t have the horses to hang with the Tide for a full four quarters. Bryce Young and the Alabama offense will find its rhythm and Will Anderson Jr. and the defense will be swarming. Alabama takes care of business on New Year’s Eve.

Alabama 38, Cincinnati 17

The talent gap is too large between these two programs, and while I love seeing a Group of 5 program getting a shot at the playoff, I’m not convinced that Cincinnati can keep up with the Tide.

Alabama 48, Cincinnati 21

On Friday, Alabama and Cincinnati will fight for a chance to reach the national championship. Cincinnati comes in at No. 4 in the CFP rankings with an undefeated record while Alabama sits atop the rankings with just one blemish on its resume.

Alabama is no stranger to the playoffs. Since its inception in the 2014 season, Nick Saban and the Tide have appeared in each of the playoffs, with the exception of the 2019 season.

Before its matchup with Cincinnati, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic released a highlight video of Alabama’s historic 2020 season.

Alabama and Cincinnati will hit the field on Friday, Dec. 31, at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

5 Bearcats to watch in the Alabama vs. Cincinnati Cotton Bowl matchup

5 Bearcats that Tide fans should be watching during the Alabama vs. Cincinnati Cotton Bowl matchup

The stage is set and the anticipation is mounting as Alabama and Cincinnati prepare to clash on New Year’s Eve in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Like most contests of this magnitude, a handful of plays made by a handful of players will go a long way in determining the outcome of the game.

Today we are going to highlight a few players for the Cincinnati Bearcats that I believe Crimson Tide fans will need to be on the lookout for come Friday afternoon.

Let’s do this!

LOOK: Alabama has arrived in Texas for Cotton Bowl

It has been more than three weeks since Alabama stepped between the white lines of a football field for a contest. Now, we are just five days away from the kickoff of the semifinal matchup with Cincinnati in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Alabama made the trip from Tuscaloosa to Dallas today to prepare for game week.

The Tide has hopes of defeating the Bearcats in order to face off against the winner of the Capital One Orange Bowl between Georgia and Michigan for the National Championship in Indianapolis on January 10.

You can watch Alabama take on Cincinnati on December 31 at 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.

Comparing stats: Alabama vs. Cincinnati ahead of CFP Cotton Bowl matchup

How do the two teams compare in the stat columns?

We are now just 10 days away from Alabama’s semifinal matchup with the Cincinnati Bearcats. Following Christmas, each team will head off to Dallas to continue its preparation for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Before the two teams collide, I thought we could take a look at how they compare statistically on each side of the football.

Let’s get it started!

First …offensive stats…

Alabama will have to slow down a familiar face in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic

Alabama will have to slow down a familiar face in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic.

Alabama is set to battle the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic on December 31. This will mark the first time in playoff history that a Group of 5 school has made it to the College Football Playoff.

The Bearcats will present several challenges on each side of the ball to the Crimson Tide when we get to the New Year’s Eve matchup.

Quarterback Desmond Ridder is a talented player who can beat you with both his arm and his legs.

Defensively, the Bearcats will attack and rely on their star defensive backs to shut down the Alabama passing attack.

In my mind of the keys to the game will be how well Alabama defends the run.

Cincinnati has a great rushing attack led by former Alabama running back Jerome Ford.

Ford has had a phenomenal junior season for the Bearcats. On the season, Ford has amassed 1,242 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns while averaging a whopping 6.2 yards per carry.

Ford has been a home run hitter for the Bearcats this season. He has two runs of 79 yards on the season plus additional runs of 43, 50, and 75.

Alabama will need to contain the explosive Ford to keep the Bearcat offense in check.

Kickoff for the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic is set for 2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
