Gold pants are back for the Commanders’ home opener vs. Giants

It’s official. Gold pants for Sunday.

In an ongoing effort to honor the franchise’s history, Washington Commanders’ ownership recently announced the return of gold pants to the team’s uniforms for the 2024 NFL season.

Fans were happy about the move. Washington began wearing gold pants in the 1930s, lasting until 1979. After not being a part of any uniform combinations for over 30 years, former team president and general manager Bruce Allen brought back the gold pants as a regular part of the uniform rotation in 2010.

The team did break out the gold pants in 1994, 2002-03, and 2007 as part of their throwback uniforms. Washington last wore them in 2018.

The team revealed Thursday that the Commanders will wear burgundy jerseys and gold pants for Sunday’s 2024 home opener against the New York Giants.

Washington quarterback Jayden Daniels will make his first home start in Sunday’s game.

Commanders to bring back gold pants in 2024

The gold pants are back.

On the franchise’s 92nd birthday, the Washington Commanders took a trip down memory lane. The Commanders revealed on X that their famous gold pants would be back in the uniform rotation in 2024.

The 2024 season will be the first time since 2018 that Washington has donned the gold pants. The franchise first began wearing them after moving to D.C. from Boston in 1937. After being part of the uniform rotation for 40 years, the gold pants disappeared in the late 1970s and were not part of Washington’s Super Bowl teams in the 1980s and early 90s.

There were rare occasions that the team brought them back, but it wasn’t until former team president Bruce Allen came to Washington ahead of the 2010 season that the gold pants were officially a part of the team’s uniform rotation. Allen, whose father George was a legendary head coach of the Redskins in the 1970s, was a fan of the look.

The Commanders did not reveal which games they would wear the gold pants in 2024.

Thomas Morstead shares Saints uniform combo for Week 15 vs. Chiefs

New Orleans Saints punter Thomas Morstead said on Twitter that the team will wear black jerseys and pants for Week 15 against the Chiefs.

Thomas Morstead is one of the team captains who votes each week on the New Orleans Saints uniform combination, and the Pro Bowl punter took time Friday to announce their upcoming pick: black jerseys with matching black pants. It’s been the most-popular look in the Sean Payton era, worn in 73 games since 2006 (including the playoffs).

This will be the 29th consecutive game the Saints have played without using their gold pants, which were also a fixture (91 games) until quarterback Drew Brees injured his throwing hand while wearing them in a Week 2 game with the Los Angeles Rams last year. Presumably superstitious after the incident, the Saints introduced white pants soon after and haven’t gone back to the gold since.

Brees is one of the team captains who votes each week; the group includes Morstead and linebacker Craig Robertson as special teams captains, with Brees and left tackle Terron Armstead representing the offense while linebacker Demario Davis, defensive end Cameron Jordan, and safety Malcolm Jenkins speak for the defense. As Morstead pointed out on Twitter, the decision to shun the gold pants falls to a group vote, “and we don’t all agree.”

The full rankings, for the superstitious (and those of you, like me, who are just a little stitious):

  1. White jerseys, white pants: 6-2 (.750)
  2. “Color Rush” alternates: 7-3 (.700)
  3. “Black and Gold” throwbacks: 2-1 (.667)
  4. Black jerseys, gold pants: 23-13 (.639)
  5. White jerseys, black pants: 41-25 (.621)
  6. Black jerseys, black pants: 45-28 (.616)
  7. White jerseys, gold pants: 31-24 (.564)

Look! Ohio State football players receive Big Ten championship rings and gold pants

The Ohio State football players received not only their Big Ten championship rings, but also another pair of gold pants Wednesday. Look …

It slid a little under the radar, but Wednesday was the first day that Ohio State players and coaches could technically be together for workouts under the approved six-week preseason plan the NCAA approved a couple of weeks ago. And so it was apparently at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, as the coaching staff had some door prizes for the football program by way of some well-earned swag.

According to several posts on social media by Buckeye football players, they received some pretty amazing looking Big Ten championship rings, as well as another pair of gold pants for beating That Team Up North. Again.

We could post any one of several players that shared some pretty nice images of these jewels, but we believe tight end Jeremy Ruckert’s is well worth a look.

Hopefully, we’ll see more of this type of rewarding jewelry this fall and beyond.
