2024 Mock Draft Round-Up: Where Notre Dame players are projected to go in April

How many Notre Dame players will get drafted this spring?

Four more NFL teams see their seasons come to an end this weekend; four others will remain alive for a chance to win Super Bowl 58.

As more and more teams enter the offseason, more and more heads to turn to those offseason and NFL draft plans.

Notre Dame has what certainly seems like a top-10 pick: offensive tackle Joe Alt. Just how high will Alt go? Could he crack the top-five?

And what about the other former Golden Domers? Audric Estime and Blake Fisher expect to hear their names called. but what about some others?

We took a look at a handful of mock drafts to see where they project the former Fighting Irish stars to get drafted.  Here is what our first look at the NFL mock draft roundup found:

Giants hire longtime Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas

The Giants hired longtime Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas. More changes are hitting the New Orleans coaching staff:

This seemed to be likely: the New York Giants announced that Joel Thomas will take over as their running backs coach on Brian Daboll’s staff, marking the latest departure from the New Orleans Saints. Thomas had worked with the Saints since 2015 but he’ll be leaving in a lateral move.

It’s another shakeup on the offensive side of the ball in New Orleans. The Saints rushing attack fell off in recent years, finishing 21st, 19th, and 15th in rushing yards each of the last three seasons while totaling 37 touchdown runs in their last 51 games.

Notably, Thomas is the only position coach that Alvin Kamara has known in his Saints career. The fan-favorite running back has a couple of years left on his contract but speculation has swirled that he could be on the trade block in the near future as one of the team’s few enviable assets. Hopefully he’s receptive to a new position coach who can help Kamara get back to the record-breaking form we saw in years past so he can finish his career in black and gold.

Giants request to interview Derrick Ansley for defensive coordinator vacancy

The Giants are eyeing Derrick Ansley to potentially fill their defensive coordinator vacancy.

The Giants have a defensive coordinator vacancy to fill after Wink Martindale resigned, and they are looking to bring in Chargers DC Derrick Ansley for an interview for the job.

Hired to oversee the defensive backs in 2021, Ansley held that role until this past season when he was promoted to defensive coordinator after Renaldo Hill left for a position with the Dolphins.

Brandon Staley called the defensive plays until he was fired in December. Ansley then became the primary play-caller for the last three games of the season. As a result, the defense looked sharper, finishing 16th in defensive EPA.

Ansley has spent most of his career in the college ranks as the defensive backs coach for Tennessee, Kentucky and Alabama. He was the Raiders defensive backs coach in 2018. He returned to Tennessee as their defensive coordinator and DBs coach from 2019 to 2020.

Giants interview Saints RB coach Joel Thomas for a possible lateral move

The Giants are interviewing Saints running backs coach Joel Thomas for the same position. Approving a lateral move suggests changes are coming for New Orleans:

This is interesting: NFL Network’s Ian Rapport reports that the New York Giants are interviewing Joel Thomas for their open running backs coach job. That’s the same position Thomas has held on staff with the New Orleans Saints, meaning the team has given him permission to seek a lateral move — which suggests changes are on the way on Airline Drive.

Thomas is one of the longest-tenures members of the Saints coaching staff, having held his current post since 2015, and he’s the only position coach that Alvin Kamara has had during his storied career. Moving on from him would be a big shakeup.

But the New Orleans rushing attack has struggled to get going in recent years. As a team, they averaged the second-fewest yards per carry (3.6) in 2023. The Saints ranked 21st in rushing yards per game (102.5) and they didn’t have a single carry gain 20 or more yards by their running backs all season. It’s true that their offensive line hasn’t met expectations, but their running backs haven’t done enough to make a difference, either.

Thomas has drawn attention from other teams before. He interviewed for the Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator job last offseason. Before that, he was a candidate to take over as head coach at his Idaho alma mater. He’s a respected coach and this interest from the Giants suggests he’ll land on his feet if the Saints are intending to make a change in the weeks ahead.

Chargers conclude interview with Brandon Brown for general manager opening

The Chargers concluded their first interview for the general manager vacancy.

The Chargers on Thursday confirmed they have interviewed Brandon Brown for their general manager position.

Brown, 35, finished his second season as the Giants assistant general manager. In his first season in the role, Brown helped GM Joe Schoen revamp their roster and helped lead New York back to the playoffs for the first time in six years.

Brown was previously with the Eagles for five seasons from 2017 to 2021. He first started as assistant director of pro scouting for two seasons. He was then promoted to director of pro scouting for two seasons. Brown finished his tenure as director of player personnel for one season.

Before his time with Philadelphia, Brown spent two seasons from 2015 to 2016 with the Colts as a scouting assistant before being promoted to advance scout.

Brown attended Fordham University, where he played defensive back while earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and communications media management.

Chargers block Giants’ request to interview special teams coordinator Ryan Ficken

The Chargers don’t want to let go of one of their top assistant coaches.

The Giants are searching for a new special teams coordinator after firing Thomas McGaughey, and one of the coaches they were hoping to bring in for an interview was Ryan Ficken of the Chargers.

However, New York’s request was denied by Los Angeles, according to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo.

Despite Brandon Staley being fired, the Chargers don’t want one of the assistants he brought in to go to another team, and they hope they can get him to stay on staff with whoever the next head coach is.

Hired to oversee the Bolts’ special teams two years ago, Ficken engineered some of the best units in the NFL in that timeframe.

Before joining the Chargers, Ficken spent the first 15 years of his NFL career with the Vikings, serving as the team’s special teams coordinator in 2021 after assisting the group for the prior eight seasons.

Leonard Williams reaches milestone not seen in almost 100 years

Leonard Williams has been the Seahawks’ best defender since he came over from the Giants in a trade just before the deadline.

Leonard Williams has been the Seahawks’ best defender since he came over from the Giants in a trade just before the deadline.

Williams’ performance on the field has been especially impressive when you consider that he hasn’t gotten a bye week this season. Thanks to the trade, he missed out on getting a week off both with the Giants and with the Seahawks. That means today Williams will be playing in his 18th game this season. In case you’re wondering, that hasn’t been done since 1930.

Williams has totaled 5.5 sacks, nine tackles for a loss and 15 quarterback hits.

Williams will become a free agent in March. However, he has bought a house in the Seattle area – with Tyler Lockett acting as his real estate agent – indicating he wants to stay.
