8 transfer portal entrants Alabama could pursue

Alabama has struck gold multiple times by landing stars from the transfer portal. Here are eight names currently in the portal to keep an eye on!

The transfer portal season is upon us. There are players and coaches exiting programs left and right for better situations. The decisions made by these players are done in their own best interest, regardless of how fans online feel about it.

Oftentimes, Alabama lands transfers who are looking to make it to the next level. In the past, the Crimson Tide have helped develop transfers like Tyler Steen, Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Landon Dickerson. All of them have gone on to the NFL and are currently on active rosters.

Whatever the case may be, Alabama has done an exemplary job of recruiting players in the transfer portal.

Roll Tide Wire takes a closer look at eight transfer portal entrants that Alabama could look to pursue.

Tennessee offensive lineman enters NCAA transfer portal

Tennessee offensive lineman enters the NCAA transfer portal.

Tennessee redshirt senior offensive lineman Gerald Mincey entered the NCAA transfer portal on Thursday.

“Tennessee offensive tackle Gerald Mincey has entered the transfer portal, On3sports has learned,” Pete Nakos of On3 announced. “He started his career at Florida.”

Mincey played in all 12 regular-season games, including six starts in 2023 at Tennessee. He played on 510 snaps, allowing two sacks.

The 6-foot-6, 337-pound offensive lineman played left tackle in nine games, including seven starts, during the 2022 campaign for the Vols.

Mincey played at Florida from 2020-21 before transferring to Tennessee. He played in 11 games for the Gators.

Josh Heupel provides update for three Vols ahead of Alabama game

Josh Heupel provides update for three Vols ahead of Alabama game on Saturday.

No. 8 Alabama (6-1, 4-0 SEC) will host No. 15 Tennessee (5-1, 2-1 SEC) at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on Saturday in Week 8.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel provided an update on the status of offensive lineman Gerald Mincey and defensive linemen Daevin Hobbs and Omarr Norman-Lott ahead of playing Alabama.

“Believe all of those guys will be ready as we go through this week,” Heupel said. “Anticipate those guys being ready to go.”

Kickoff between the Vols and Crimson Tide is slated for 3:30 p.m. EDT and will be televised by CBS.

Tennessee enters the Week 8 contest after defeating Texas A&M, 20-13. Alabama was victorious against Arkansas, 24-21, last week.

LOOK: Tennessee OL trash talks Alabama’s Will Anderson via social media

A current Tennessee OL had some words to say about Alabama LB Will Anderson via Instagram on Monday.

After the Tennessee Volunteers defeated Alabama for the first time in 15 years, one player took to social media to speak out. Tennessee offensive tackle Gerald Mincey responded to a post on Instagram regarding Will Anderson and the Crimson Tide playing with anxiety.

“Naw fam you (Will Anderson) just suck..,” he said.

Those are strong words pointed toward a potential first-overall pick. Although Anderson didn’t play particularly well in the Week 7 loss, it doesn’t change the fact that he will likely be a top-five pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

Mincey and the Volunteers’ offensive line were able to minimize the Alabama pass rush. Alabama’s defense was only able to get one sack on Hendon Hooker. It will be interesting to see if the two meet again for the SEC Championship in Atlanta. For that to happen, both teams will likely have to win out.

If the two are able to collide with the College Football Playoff on the line, it would be interesting to see the matchup between Anderson and Mincey.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to provide the latest Alabama football news.

Alex Golesh details Vols’ competition at left tackle ahead of Week 1

Alex Golesh details Tennessee’s competition at left tackle ahead of Week 1.

Tennessee will kick off its 2022 season Sept. 1 versus Ball State at Neyland Stadium.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. EDT and SEC Network will televise the season-opening matchup.

Ahead of the Vols’ first game, second-year offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Alex Golesh discussed Tennessee’s competition at left tackle between Jeremiah Crawford and Gerald Mincey.

“I think the best thing for both of those guys is that there was real competition in there, and they both knew they couldn’t have a bad day,” Golesh said. “Inherently, Coach (Glen) Elarbee has rotated both of them. They’ve both gotten to play next to Jerome (Carvin). I feel good with both those guys. They’re different players. They’re both inexperienced, but they’re different, so they both have weaknesses, they both have strengths.

“I don’t know that you call the game any different with either one in there by any means, but I think, again, similar to the freshmen, J.J.’s played some and Gerald’s played some. Just not a ton, and not a ton of meaningful reps, so you go in, you kind of let it sort out as they go. They’ll both play, and we’ll see who it is that we have more sync with. If it’s both of them, awesome. We’ll be deeper there than we felt like we were a year ago.”

Josh Heupel details Tennessee’s left tackle competition during fall camp

Josh Heupel details Tennessee’s left tackle competition during fall camp.

Tennessee scrimmaged for the second time during fall training camp Sunday at Neyland Stadium ahead of the 2022 season.

Following the Vols’ second scrimmage during fall training camp, head coach Josh Heupel met with media.

Heupel discussed Tennessee’s left tackle position and how competition is progressing during fall training camp.

“It’s been back and forth a little bit through training camp,” Heupel said. “You guys have heard me say this, at the end of the day, we’re going to need both of them, all of them. You experienced last year, injuries. That’s true at the tackle spot. It’s true at all five spots. Those guys are continuing to compete. That’s not going to stop after today. That’ll happen all the way up until kickoff.

“Anticipate both of them (Jeremiah Crawford and Gerald Mincey) playing during the course of the football game throughout the season, and certainly in week one. Who gets a majority of that, or what the percentage breakdown is, we’ll continue to evaluate as we go through. Both of them have made a bunch of progress from spring ball, and really since the beginning of training camp, in understanding what we’re doing offensively. In the run game, playing with better pad level, being able to create some movement up front. Both of them have taken major strides in the pass pro side of it, too. I feel like those guys are continuing to progress as they should.”

Here’s where Florida’s incoming transfers stand, per 247Sports

The Top247 transfer rankings have been finalized and there are five incoming Gators on the list.

It’s no secret that Florida has seen a decent amount of movement through the transfer portal this offseason, and there’s reason to be excited about the new names and faces coming to Gainesville next season.

247Sports finalized its Top247 college football transfer portal player rankings, and five incoming Gators made the cut. Offensive guard [autotag]O’Cyrus Torrence[/autotag] leads the way at No. 33 overall and is joined by fellow Louisiana-Lafayette offensive line transfer [autotag]Kamryn Waites[/autotag] at No. 41.

Torrence was a three-year starter for the Ragin’ Cajuns and [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag] decided that his skill set fit the needs of his new team. Playing his final year in the Southeastern Conference should help his draft stock rise, assuming he takes the step forward he’s expected to. Waites only played one year at ULL, but Florida needed offensive linemen and he’s got the size (6-foot-8-inches, 358-pounds) to compete at the highest level in college football.

Next up is former Georgia cornerback [autotag]Jalen Kimber[/autotag] at No. 49 on the list. Kimber was targeted by cornerbacks coach [autotag]Corey Raymond[/autotag] after playing just three games in two years at UGA due to a shoulder injury that limited him for most of 2021. He likely would have seen plenty of playing time with the Bulldogs this season had he stayed, but now he’ll compete for a starting job at Florida instead.

[autotag]Montrell Jonhson[/autotag], the third Lousiana transfer to make the cut, is ranked No. 70 among transfers and has a shot to be a major contributor in his first season with the Gators. He knows Napier’s playbook and was the Sun Belt Freshman of the Year in 2021 after rushing for 838 yards on 162 attempts (5.17 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns.

Finally, there’s the newest addition to the team, Arizona State transfer [autotag]Ricky Pearsall[/autotag] at No. 155 on the list. He was one of the best receivers in the Pac-12 last season and gives the Gators some depth at a position where they don’t have much experience from returning players to rely on.

Of course, Florida did lose its share of Top247 talent as well. The Gators lost linebacker [autotag]Mohamoud Diabate[/autotag] (No. 42) to Utah, receiver [autotag]Jacob Copeland[/autotag] (No. 60) to Maryland, linebacker [autotag]Ty’Ron Hopper[/autotag] (No. 86) to Missouri, EDGE [autotag]Khris Bogle[/autotag] (No. 88) to [autotag]Michigan State [/autotag]and tight end [autotag]Kemore Gamble[/autotag] (No. 135) to UCF.

Quarterback [autotag]Jack Miller[/autotag] is the only incoming transfer not ranked by 247Sports. [autotag]Emory Jones[/autotag],[autotag] Carlos Del Rio-Wilson[/autotag] and [autotag]Gerald Mincey[/autotag] comprise the list of outgoing players that failed to make the Top247.

Florida offensive line transfer commits to an SEC East rival

Redshirt freshman Gerald Mincey announced his commitment to Tennessee on Friday.

Florida has lost a number of players to the transfer portal since the regular season ended and the team announced Billy Napier as the next head coach. Napier will succeed Dan Mullen, who was fired after a Week 12 loss to the Missouri Tigers in overtime. Now, one of those players is heading to a division rival in the SEC East.

Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Gerald Mincey entered the transfer portal on Nov. 29, and he has already found a new home. On Friday afternoon, Mincey announced via Twitter that he will be transferring to Tennessee with three remaining years of eligibility.

Mincey was a three-star recruit out of Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale in the 2020 recruiting class. He appeared in 10 games in his two years with the Gators, mostly seeing action as a reserve offensive lineman. With his transfer, Florida’s depth along the offensive trenches takes a hit. The team now only has 11 remaining scholarship offensive linemen.

He’s one of six players to enter the transfer portal following the win over Florida State, but he’s the first to announce a destination. UF also lost two starters to the portal, receiver Jacob Copeland and Mohamoud Diabate, though neither has announced their new school yet.

Florida offensive lineman Gerald Mincey has announced he is transferring from the Gators to Tennessee.

“1,000 percent committed to the University of Tennessee,” Mincey said.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound redshirt freshman is from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mincey appeared in nine game for Florida in 2021. He played in one game during the 2020 campaign.

Pair of Florida football players enter the transfer portal

Offensive lineman Gerald Mincey and defensive end Dante Zanders have reportedly entered the transfer portal.

Whenever there’s a coaching change, you can expect some players to choose to leave in the fallout, especially in the transfer portal era. After announcing Billy Napier as the next head coach on Sunday, Florida saw two players choose to leave the program on Monday.

Per reports, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Gerald Mincey and redshirt junior defensive lineman Dante Zanders have entered the transfer portal, meaning that schools can now contact them as they look for a landing spot.

Mincey was a three-star recruit (per the 247Sports Composite) out of Fort Lauderdale in the 2020 recruiting class. He appeared in one game in 2020 as a redshirt freshman, seeing action in Florida’s Cotton Bowl loss to Oklahoma in the final game of the year, and he appeared in nine games in 2021 as a reserve offensive lineman.

Zanders was also a three-star recruit, but the Boca Raton product originally committed to Florida to play tight end. In his first two years on campus, he appeared in 15 games as a reserve tight end and didn’t record any stats. He moved to defensive end ahead of the 2020 season, and he appeared in every game after missing the season opener, totaling five tackles.

He appeared in every game in 2021 as a redshirt junior, but he still only totaled six tackles (four of which came against South Florida in Week 2) and half a sack.

These aren’t major losses for the Gators, but they will decrease their depth along the trenches heading into 2022. Napier may look to the transfer portal himself this offseason to help shore up the lines of scrimmage.
