As surge continues, Jalen Green finds motivation from family, baby

When asked after Tuesday’s emphatic victory in Washington about what is inspiring him, Rockets guard Jalen Green said: “My family. My baby.”

Third-year Rockets guard Jalen Green is the reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, and he tied his career-high with 42 points in Tuesday’s blowout victory at Washington.

Thanks to Green’s success, Houston (33-35) has won six straight games and is now 8-1 in March as it continues an improbable late-season run that could result in a West play-in tournament berth.

So, what changed? Sure, there were tactical tweaks by head coach Ime Udoka, such as playing at a faster pace since the All-Star break — which likely benefits an elite athlete like Green.

But there could also be other reasons. In Tuesday’s emotional on-court interview with Vanessa Richardson of Space City Home Network, Green was asked postgame about what’s motivating him. The 22-year-old, drafted No. 2 overall in the 2021 first round, replied:

My family. My baby.

Green’s girlfriend, Draya Michele, announced on March 8 that she was 28 weeks pregnant. As it turns out, that’s also the day Green and the Rockets began their current six-game winning streak.

Green’s complete postgame interview can be viewed below.

Rockets, Astros to launch Space City Home Network on October 3

Tuesday, Oct. 3 is the official launch date of the “Space City Home Network,” which is owned by the #Rockets and Astros. Televised games will begin with the Oct. 10 preseason opener.

In confirmation of widely reported news, the NBA’s Houston Rockets and Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros announced the launch of Space City Home Network (SCHN) on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Beginning that day, fans can follow the network on social media at @SpaceCityHN while finding more information at SpaceCityHN.com.

In a joint release, the Rockets and Astros said they are “acquiring AT&T SportsNet Southwest from Warner Bros. Discovery, effective Sept. 30.”

“The change will be a seamless transition for fans, as they will be able to continue to access Rockets and Astros games on the same channels they currently utilize,” the announcement reads.

“The network will be owned by the Rockets and Astros going forward and will operate as a joint venture of the organizations. The teams are committed to delivering great game content and programming, while maintaining and enhancing the award-winning quality that has made the network the premium destination for fans to watch live broadcasts, behind-the-scenes content, and much more.”

The first live broadcast on SCHN, which continues to hold exclusive local television rights for the two franchises, will be the Rockets’ preseason opener vs. Indiana on Oct. 10. In all, SCHN will broadcast more than 220 live games each year, according to the teams.

Rockets, Astros to jointly run ‘Space City Home Network’ for local TV games

The 2023-24 #Rockets and 2024 Astros will broadcast regional TV games on the newly branded “Space City Home Network,” according to media reports.

In what can effectively be referred to as a branding measure, the NBA’s Houston Rockets and Major League Baseball’s (MLB) Houston Astros will soon televise games on the “Space City Home Network.”

That will be the new name of the regional sports network currently known as AT&T SportsNet Southwest, which is owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. Earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery indicated its plans to fully exit the RSN business as soon as possible.

Space City Home Network will debut with the 2023-24 Rockets season, according to Michael Shapiro of Chron.com, and it will continue into the 2024 MLB season for the Astros. Jason Bristol of KHOU, Houston’s CBS affiliate, was first to report the new name.

Shapiro shares more details in his latest story:

The Rockets and Astros are set to act as joint owners of the newly-named RSN, per a Rockets’ source. Though for consumers, the launch of Space City Home Network won’t impact their ability to watch local games. The network will operate as a traditional RSN available via cable providers, and via streaming options currently available.

In the short-term, the Astros and Rockets inherit the existing regional carriage agreements that AT&T SportsNet Southwest had with distributors such as DirecTV, Comcast and fuboTV.

In the longer term, once existing carriage agreements expire, the transition to local ownership might allow teams to explore direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming options. But that’s a number of years away, and each sports league is poised to have many conversations with its teams before then regarding the best path forward.

Many teams and their broadcast partners are experiencing similar challenges as they attempt to recoup falling revenues due to cord-cutting trends and its impact on the traditional cable business model.

The AT&T SportsNet branding will continue through the end of the Astros’ 2023 regular season, which finishes on Sunday, Oct. 1. From there, MLB postseason games are national-only broadcasts, and the network can effectively turn its focus to the upcoming NBA season.
