Week 5 SEC Power Rankings: Kentucky, Auburn on the move

Week five in the SEC was tumultuous.

There were some unexpected things happening in the SEC this weekend.

Georgia started off Saturday with a 37-0 demolishing of No. 8 Arkansas without quarterback JT Daniels. Missouri’s defense is worse than we thought. The Tigers gave up 62 points in a blowout loss to Tennessee. Alabama ran away from Ole Miss after some questionable decisions made by Lane Kiffin early. Kentucky beat No. 10 Florida in Lexington for the first time in 35 years. No. 15 Texas A&M lost at home to Mississippi State. Auburn beat LSU in Baton Rouge for the first time since 1999. And Vandy vs UConn was a down-to-the-wire 30-28 thriller in favor of the Commodores. Streaks were broken, blowouts were had, and Vanderbilt somehow won. What a weekend.

Here are the SEC power rankings after a tumultuous week five in the Southeastern Conference.

SEC predictions for week 5

Can Auburn beat LSU for the first time since 1999? Here are @dawepound’s thoughts.

We’ve officially waded waist-deep into conference play.

Last week, I promised I would crack 80% on my picks for the season and after going 7-1 in week four, I managed to get to 80% (36-9 on the year). This week is going to be tough if I want to keep that rate going.

There are two top 25 matchups on deck for us this week in the Southeastern Conference, with the No. 8 Arkansas Razorbacks heading down to Athens to take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs, and the No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels taking on the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa. Not only do we have these two fantastic matchups in store, but we also have two other top 25 teams on the road to face valiant conference foes (No. 10 Florida at Kentucky, No. 22 Auburn at LSU). Also, don’t forget the Super Bowl is being played this weekend between UConn and Vanderbilt. It’s must watch television.

Here are my predictions for the SEC in week five.

Georgia vs Arkansas Game Preview

Why Arkansas Will Win

This isn’t a perfect team, but it’s been almost flawless so far for what it wants to do. More to the point, it won’t buckle in a game like this. This showdown won’t be a high-flying fun show, but as the Hogs showed against Texas A&M, that’s fine.

Arkansas runs well, hits the big play down the field, controls games defensively on third downs, and wins the turnover battle.

Georgia has given it up seven times in the first four games. Arkansas needs to come up with a few takeaways and capitalize on them all. The defense has to hold on and match the Dawg side big stop for big stop.

Georgia might lead the nation in total defense, but Arkansas hasn’t allowed more than 255 yards in any of the last three games.

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

Why Georgia Will Win

The Bulldog defense is special – it allowed 23 points so far against Clemson, two SEC teams, and a UAB squad that might win the Conference USA title – but the offensive side is getting it done, too.

South Carolina might not be great, but it has a defense. UAB’s D is solid, and Vanderbilt is … uh … Vanderbilt plays in the SEC. The Dawg O came up with over 1,500 yards and 158 in those three games.

It starts with a line that’s not allowing anything to happen in the backfield, giving JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett plenty of time to work. Those two combined so far to hit almost 75% of their passes with 11 touchdowns.

Yes, Arkansas has been phenomenal so far, but it there’s a problem with penalties, the return game isn’t anything great, and the O isn’t good enough on third downs.

It’s going to have to be flawless to pull this off.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas is for real.

KJ Jefferson could stand to be more accurate, but he’s a big-time playmakers who’s making up for his inconsistencies with the big plays. He’ll get to Georgia for one home run, but that should be about it.

Yeah, Arkansas is for real, but Georgia might be the No. 1 team in the country.

The defense will keep the dynamic playmakers in the Hog backfield from taking off, and the secondary will keep the downfield passing game under wraps.

With some due respect to the talented Texas quarterbacks, Arkansas hasn’t faced high-end passing quarterback – Rice and Georgia Southern don’t throw well enough, and Texas A&M’s Zach Calzada is just okay so far.

JT Daniels might not be 100%, but he’ll do enough to give the Arkansas secondary a rough day. The D will take care of the rest.

Georgia vs. Arkansas: Expert picks and predictions

Our predictions are in…

This Saturday, No. 8 Arkansas travels to Athens to take on No. 2 Georgia in an SEC showdown.

The game will air at noon (ugh) on ESPN and will feature two 4-0 programs who play physical, tough football.

Georgia is favored big, but there’s no reason for the Dawgs to sleep on the Razorbacks,

After all, it is a top-10 matchup in Athens with “College GameDay” on-site.

Below are our expert picks and predictions for the big game:

Georgia vs Arkansas: 5 reasons Arkansas could pull off the upset

Reasons Georgia should not take Arkansas lightly

This Saturday, No. 8 Arkansas comes to Athens to take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs.

Both teams are 4-0 and have an impressive win under their belts.

Both have smothering defenses. Georgia ranks higher in almost every statistical category, offensively and defensively, but there’s no reason to sleep on these Razorbacks.

I expect Georgia to win this game by three scores. My prediction: Georgia 34, Arkansas 13. But here’s a few reasons Georgia should not take this game lightly.

College GameDay announces Week 5 destination

College GameDay coming to Athens for UGA vs Arkansas

ESPN’s flagship college football preview show, College GameDay, has announced it will be in Athens, Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 2.

College GameDay will be on-site when No. 2 Georgia takes on No. 11 Arkansas.

This will be the second time Georgia has been the featured matchup this season. College GameDay was live from Charlotte, North Carolina in Week 1 when UGA played Clemson.

This is a game that did not really receive any attention until recently. Arkansas has kept winning, though, and a Week 4 win over Texas A&M has generated a lot of buzz about these Razorbacks.

Georgia vs Arkansas is slated for a noon kickoff, which is wildly unfortunate. But again, who saw this coming?

USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll: Where’s Georgia, Arkansas?

Coaches Poll is out. Where’s Georgia after a 62-0 win over Vandy?

The USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll has been released after Week 4, and we have plenty of movement to take a look at.

Georgia (4-0, 2-0) remains ranked at No. 2 after beating Vanderbilt 62-0 in Nashville. Alabama stays No. 1.

Saturday provided some serious entertainment.

Georgia’s Week 5 opponent, Arkansas, proved its legit this year, beating Texas A&M 20-10. The Razorbacks move to No. 11.

So there it is: Saturday at noon, it will be No. 2 Georgia vs No. 11 Arkansas in Athens.

Oregon (3) struggled in a win over Arizona, despite the final score. The Ducks proved they have a ton of work to do if they want to be a College Football Playoff team.

Oklahoma (4) continued to be less than impressive, needing a last second field goal to beat West Virginia.

Clemson (19) lost NC State in double overtime, ending their playoff hopes for 2021.

Notre Dame (7) and Wisconsin played each other tough before the Irish opened things up in the second half, eventually winning 41-13.

Here is the full top-25:

  1. Alabama
  2. Georgia
  3. Oregon
  4. Oklahoma

What Tennessee media is saying about Georgia

No. 3 Georgia faces No. 14 Tennessee today in Athens at 3:30 p.m. Here is what the Vols media is saying about the Bulldogs.

It’s Saturday in Athens DawgNation!

The No. 3 Bulldogs are set to take on No. 14 Tennessee this afternoon at 3:30 p.m. on CBS Network if weather permits.

It’s been raining since last night and the forecast is calling for more precipitation with some scattered thunderstorms during gametime, according to weather.com.

That said, both these teams feature run-focused offenses that are prepared for a classic SEC battle and the rain makes it even more of a physical matchup.

Here is what Tennessee’s media is saying about Georgia ahead of the game.

Tennessee-Georgia ‘a chess match’ between undefeated teams – by Dan Harrelson – Vols Wire

“Not having Daniels or Newman playing has paved a way for 5-foot-11, 190-pound Stetson Bennett to become Georgia’s signal-caller. In wins against Arkansas and Auburn, Bennett is 37-of-57 for 451 passing yards, three touchdowns and one interception. He has been sacked twice. Through the first two games, Monken has been able to run Air Raid concepts with Bennett, while maintaining a physical ground game.”

Here’s the 4-step formula for Tennessee football to beat Georgia – by Blake ToppmeyerKnoxville News Sentinel

“Turnover margin is one of the biggest factors in any game, but it’s proven to be especially telling against Georgia. In the Bulldogs’ seven losses since 2017, they’ve tallied 15 turnovers compared to three takeaways.”

The Cheat Sheet – by Brent Hubbs – Vol Quest

“Georgia has converted 13 of 25 third down tries in the two match ups against Jeremy Pruitt. Two years ago in Athens, Georgia dominated the Vols’ tired and undermanned defensive front by dominating time of possession.”

I break down last week’s game versus Auburn and preview today’s game versus the Volunteers.

Plus, I sit down with Georgia great Tavarres King to talk about his time in the NFL with the Manning brothers and, of course, UGA’s receivers! Listen here:

The good vs. the bad from Georgia’s season opening win at Arkansas

Georgia won its season opener at Arkansas 37-10. We breakdown what went wrong and what went right here.

After an abysmal first half where Georgia found itself down 7-2 at one point, the Bulldogs were able to find some rhythm and came back to beat Arkansas 37-10.

The resurgence was due, in part, to junior quarterback Stetson Bennett, who got the call when redshirt freshman D’Wan Mathis was pulled after just five drives.

Hear what former Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray had to say about the Dawgs’ quarterback play here:

Let’s break down the good versus the bad from UGA’s win in Fayetteville.
