Shrewsberry, Brey meeting night before Notre Dame plays Georgia Tech

This should be cool.

After over two decades as Notre Dame’s coach, [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] is taking it easier these days. No, he hasn’t left basketball altogether. He’s on the coaching staff for the Atlanta Hawks. Coincidentally, the Irish are about to play Georgia Tech in the same city as the NBA’s Georgia-based franchise.

With the Irish’s past and present coming together in the same city, [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] intends to take advantage of that. Tom Noie of the South Bend Tribune is reporting that Brew and Shrewsberry will be together at the Irish’s Atlanta hotel Monday:

Some of you might be thinking that Brey might try and spread his influence to the first-year Irish coach and thus corrupt him with old and tired ideas. If Shrewsberry really was worried about that though, do you really think he would have extended this invitation? I think he’s secure enough to know that won’t be possible.

No. This is a way for the two men to get to know each other. They might both even become better for it. That would be beneficial for their respective teams, which is good for everybody.

Social media reacts to UNC hiring Jeff Collins as DC

Geoff Collins had up-and-down head coaching stints, but has greatly excelled as a defensive coordinator. He now takes over UNC’s worst unit.

Not one player – or one person – can fix how horrendous the UNC football team’s defense is.

The 6-0 start fooled all of Tar Heel Nation. A 9-sack performance in the 2023 opener against South Carolina and emergence of Alijah Huzzie, turned into allowing Georgia Tech and a lowly UVA squad to combine for over 1,000 offensive yards.

There were plenty of calls for firing Gene Chizik from his defensive coordinator position during the season, a trend I feel like is emerging across struggling teams on all levels. That finally happened on Wednesday this week, as Chizik’s firing came exactly a week after UNC’s Duke’s Mayo Bowl loss to West Virginia.

It only took Carolina two days to find its next defensive coordinator, as former Temple and Georgia Tech head coach Geoff Collins was hired earlier Friday.

In addition to his two head coaching stops, which include most wins in a Temple Head coach’s first two seasons, Collins has also been the defensive coordinator at Albright Colege, Florida International University, Mississippi State and Florida. His Mississippi State and Florida defenses finished Top-25 nationally, a sign all UNC fans are sure to be excited about.

Let’s take a deeper look into what Tar Heel Nation thinks of the hire:

ACC Network drops ball in switching over to Notre Dame-NC State

Time to vent about the ACC’s flagship station.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the first five-and-a-half minutes of its game against NC State. Good luck watching that start unless you were inside Purcell Pavilion though.

Because the earlier game on the ACC Network between Florida State and Georgia Tech went long, the lower-right corner of the screen announced that the beginning of the game between the Irish and Wolfpack would be streamed on ACC Network Extra. So I obliged by firing up my ESPN app to watch the start of the game.

The only problem was I didn’t see the game I need to see to do this job. Despite my app telling me I was streaming the Irish, it in fact was showing the remainder of the contest between the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets. So I completely missed the Irish’s hot start because I was misled.

Maybe it was an issue with me being an Xfinity customer, or maybe it was something on ESPN’s end. It might even have been something on my end, in which case shame on me. Whatever the reason though, I was put at a disadvantage in covering the start of this game, and I apologize if my game story isn’t the best tonight.

I’m not paying extra for the ACC Network to be shut out of an exciting start to a game. Something needs to be different so that this doesn’t happen again.

Next up for Georgia is the SEC championship. The Bulldogs face the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC title game on Dec. 2 in Atlanta, Georgia. Alabama is coming off a miracle road win at Auburn. Both Georgia and Alabama have some flaws, but the winner of the SEC championship will likely make the College Football Playoff. With the results from Saturday, the loser of the SEC championship will probably miss out on the College Football Playoff.

Georgia missing starting WR vs Georgia Tech

Georgia missing starting WR vs Georgia Tech

No. 1 Georgia looks to be without starting wide receiver Ladd McConkey as it gets set to take on rival Georgia Tech. The junior was listed as questionable due to an ankle injury suffered versus Ole Miss.

Per a report from Dawgs Daily’s Brooks Austin, McConkey was not present in warmups and is expected to miss the contest.

The rivals will kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET in Bobby Dodd Stadium for the 115th meeting of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.

McConkey isn’t the only Bulldog currently banged-up. Starting right guard Tate Ratledge is questionable for the game due to a bone bruise, while wide receiver Rara Thomas is also questionable due to a foot injury.

Georgia will have to play shorthanded tonight with an SEC Championship matchup with No. 8 Alabama on the slate next week.

You can find the full UGA injury report here.
