Georgia Tech stuns No. 4 Miami, shaking up Clemson’s playoff chances

The ACC has another crazy upset.

Miami football’s loss to Georgia Tech, a 28-23 upset, has major implications for both the ACC standings and the College Football Playoff race. The Hurricanes, once 9-0 and ranked No. 4 in the initial CFP rankings, now face an uphill battle to stay in the playoff conversation. With little room for further slip-ups, Miami will need to win its remaining games to retain a shot at both the ACC Championship and a playoff spot.

The game was marked by Miami’s inability to regain momentum after Georgia Tech took the lead in the second quarter. In the final minutes, quarterback Cam Ward’s fumble ended Miami’s comeback attempt, compounded by a mismanaged timeout call that left limited time on the clock. The loss, Georgia Tech’s second straight over Miami, leaves Miami awaiting Tuesday’s updated CFP rankings to see the impact on their season.

Does this mean Clemson’s fate is back in their own hands? Not quite, as they still need another Miami loss or an SMU loss to have a chance at the ACC Championship, including winning out themselves. The rest of the season will be a wild watch.

Recent Georgia football decommit picks Georgia Tech

Four-star defender commits to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets shortly decommitting from the Georgia Bulldogs

Four-star defensive lineman Christian Garrett committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Monday. Garrett decommitted from the Georgia Bulldogs on Aug 11.

Garrett’s commitment comes shortly after Georgia Tech knocked off Florida State, 24-21, to kick off the 2024 college football season. The Yellow Jackets are building serious momentum under head coach Brent Key.

Garrett is the No. 142 player in the 2025 recruiting cycle and plays high school football for Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart, Georgia. The 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive line recruit ranks 18th at his position and 16th in Georgia, per 247Sports.

Garrett was Georgia’s top defensive line commitment in the 2025 recruiting cycle. He is Georgia Tech’s third-highest ranked commit in the class of 2025.  Georgia remains projected to land two five-star recruits along the defensive line in the 2025 cycle, but Garrett’s flip to Georgia Tech still stings.

The Yellow Jackets are hot on the recruiting trail right now. Georgia Tech has the No. 19 recruiting class in the country, which would be the Yellow Jackets’ best signing class in years. Five-star in-state offensive lineman Josh Petty recently became one of Georgia Tech’s top commitments in school history.

Georgia Tech appears to be closing the gap on Georgia in terms of talent. Head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia have the No. 4 recruiting class in the nation, which is still significantly better than Georgia Tech’s class.

Joe Tessitore absolutely nailed his broadcast call for Georgia Tech’s game-winning field goal over Florida State

What a perfect call from Joe Tessitore to kick off 2024 college football.

ESPN broadcaster Joe Tessitore knew exactly what to say as Georgia Tech stunned No. 10 Florida State in Dublin on Saturday to kick off the 2024 college football season.

As Yellowjackets kicker Aidan Birr knocked down the 44-yard field goal to lift his team above Florida State, Tessitore nailed the call as he said that Georgia State found a pot of gold at the end of the Irish rainbow.

“Welcome back to college football!” Tessitore exclaimed on the broadcast.
“Reserve your Saturdays from here on out!”

We don’t usually get football games in Ireland, and getting a finish like this on top of the awesome location required a pro’s pro to make sure they had the right broadcast call to match it.

Tessitore stepped up to the plate and hit a grand slam.

Georgia Tech coach Brent Key gave the best answer about how proud he was of the Yellowjackets’ offensive line

RUN THE BALL!

Georgia Tech coach Brent Key and his Yellowjackets are the biggest winners of the 2024 college football season so far.

The team topped No. 10 Florida State in Dublin on Saturday to kick off the year, a massive upset that will have clear ramifications for both teams.

The Georgia Tech offensive line played a huge role in paving the way for the ground game, as the team totaled 190 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns on the day.

After the game, Key beamed with pride when asked about his team’s impressive offensive line and excitedly exclaimed “Run the ball!”

Key, a former Georgia Tech offensive lineman himself, had the perfect answer here. Run the ball, indeed.

Georgia Tech stuns No. 10 Florida State with a massive ACC football upset win

Georgia Tech shocks the college football world.

The first game of the 2024 college football season was outstanding, with a great game and a fantastic upset finish with Georgia Tech taking down No. 10 Florida State 24-21.

A back-and-forth game with two defenses playing tough, hard-nosed football, it all came down to the fourth quarter and Yellow Jackets kicker Aidan Birr. With 5 seconds remaining in the game, Birr stepped up and became a hero, crushing a 44-yard field goal for the win.

This is a huge moment for Georgia Tech and the ACC, complete shifting the conferences outlook for the season. What a win for the head coach Brent Key and the Yellow Jackets who are now a team to watch in 2024.

Week 0 went perfectly for the Yellow Jackets and miserably for the Seminoles, who now have an uphill battle for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Former Georgia TE ruled out for the season with knee injury

Former Georgia tight end ruled out for the 2024 season after suffering a serious knee injury

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be without tight end Brett Seither, who is a Georgia Bulldogs transfer, for the 2024 college football season. According to Georgia Tech head coach Brent Key, Seither suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Seither is the second Georgia transfer to be ruled out for the season at his new school. Missouri Tigers pass rusher Darris Smith will also miss the 2024 season after suffering a knee injury.

Last season, Seither caught seven passes for 101 yards and four touchdowns with Georgia Tech. He was expected to have an expanded role in 2024. Now, Georgia Tech will start Avery Boyd at tight end in its season opener.

Georgia Tech opens its season on Aug. 24 against the Florida State Seminoles in Week 0.

How much is Georgia Tech planning to pay its recent 5-star commit

How Georgia Tech landed a rare five-star commitment. A multimillion dollar NIL deal helped the Yellow Jackets in this one

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets recently picked up a commitment from five-star offensive tackle recruit Josh Petty. In fact, Petty represents history for the Georgia Tech program. He could become the second five-star signee in school history (according to 247Sports).

“Tech’s been very easy. Tech’s been very cooperative and efficient with working on that. I needed that number to be fair. Tech went beyond and above and really have taken care of me,” said Petty in a recent interview with the AJC.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive tackle is the 14th best player in the country. Petty is the fourth-ranked recruit in the Peach State and the top offensive tackle in Georgia. The Georgia Tech commit is the No. 2 offensive tackle in the nation.

It is safe to say Petty is a massive addition for Tech and head coach Brent Key. According to On3, a name, image and likeness licensing deal worth $2.4 million over three years helped the Yellow Jackets land a commitment from the talented offensive tackle.

Petty’s commitment represents a potential massive change in momentum for the Georgia Tech program. Georgia Tech is projected to pick up a commitment from Georgia’s most recent decommitment.

Petty’s commitment is another example of how Tech is becoming more of a pain in the side for the Georgia Bulldogs. One of Georgia’s top advantages over other elite college football programs is its lack of in-state recruiting competition. There’s no other state with as many top recruits and so little in-state recruiting competition.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart still runs recruiting in the Peach State. The Bulldogs are expected to land commitments from five of the state’s top six recruits in the 2025 cycle.

Georgia’s most recent decommitment projected to commit to Georgia Tech

Former Georgia football four-star commit projected to commit to Georgia Tech

Four-star defensive lineman Christian Garrrett is projected to commit to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Garrett recently decommitted from the Georgia Bulldogs.

Garrett is ranked as the No. 138 player in the 2025 recruiting cycle and plays high school football for Prince Avenue Christian in Bogart, Georgia. Christian Garrett ranks as the No. 17 defensive lineman and No. 17 prospect in Georgia, per 247Sports.

He was Georgia’s top defensive line commitment in the class of 2025. Georgia is still projected to land two five-star recruits along the defensive line in the 2025 cycle, but Garrett’s potential flip to Georgia Tech hurts the Bulldogs.

The 6-foot-4, 285-pound defensive line recruit would be one of Georgia Tech’s top commitments in recent memory. The Yellow Jackets are hot on the recruiting trail right now. Georgia Tech just landed a commitment from five-star Peach State offensive lineman Josh Petty and are now looking to solidify the other side of the trenches.

Georgia Tech still has a long way to catch up to Georgia in terms of talent. Georgia has the No. 4 recruiting class in the country while Georgia Tech has the nation’s No. 20 class of 2025.

Josh Petty, 5-star OT, commits to Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

A massive get for Georgia Tech football.

It’s been a long time since a five-star recruit decided to head to Georgia Tech. That drought came to an end on Monday.

Roswell (Ga.) Fellowship Christian School five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty announced his commitment to the Yellow Jackets Monday. Petty chose Georgia Tech over Florida State, Ohio State, Stanford and Tennessee.

The 6-foot-4.5, 262-pounder is ranked as the No. 14 player in the country, the No. 2 offensive tackle and No. 4 player in the state of Georgia according to 247Sports.

Located just over 30 minutes outside of Atlanta, Petty’s pledge is a massive win Brent Key and his staff.

Last season Key saw plenty of playing time on both sides of the ball. On defense he recorded recorded 58 tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery.

Georgia Tech remained active in Petty’s recruitment

Georgia Tech was one of the first schools to get involved in Petty’s recruitment. He picked up an offer from the Yellow Jackets in January 2021.

Since that offer he’s visited campus multiple times. He visited for the first time in March of 2023.

This summer has seen Petty on the road frequently visiting each of the schools he named as finalists.

Florida State and Georgia Tech were the only two schools he visited in July. He was in Atlanta on July 27 and headed south to Tallahassee a day later.

Georgia Tech projected to land its first 5-star since 2004

Georgia Tech football may be becoming more competitive with Georgia for the best in-state recruits

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are projected to land a commitment from its first five-star recruit since 2004. 247Sports projects the Yellow Jackets will add a commitment from five-star offensive tackle recruit Josh Petty.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound offensive tackle is the 14th best player in the country. Petty is the fourth-ranked recruit in Georgia and the top offensive tackle in the Peach State. The Georgia Tech recruiting target is the No. 2 offensive tackle in the nation.

If Petty signs with Georgia Tech and maintains his five-star ranking as a recruit, he would be the second five-star signee in Georgia Tech school history (according to 247Sports). Georgia Tech signed five-star wide receiver Calvin Johnson in the class of 2004.

One of the Georgia Bulldogs’ top advantages over other college football programs is their lack of in-state recruiting competition. There’s no other state with as many elite recruits and so little in-state recruiting competition. However, Georgia Tech’s potential emergence on the recruiting trail would represent a significant change for Georgia.

Georgia Tech has not finished with a top 40 recruiting class since the 2020 cycle, so the Yellow Jackets may not be an imminent threat to Georgia’s consistent haul of top-three recruiting classes. However, the Yellow Jackets are making progress under head coach Brent Key and are a thorn in the side of the Bulldogs with much greater frequency these days.

For now, head coach Kirby Smart and Georgia run the Peach State. The Bulldogs have earned commitments from eight of the state’s top 30 recruits in the 2025 cycle and are projected to land several more top in-state recruits. No other program has more than two commitments from top 30 recruits in Georgia.
