Joel Klatt’s top 10 college football rankings after drama-filled rivalry week

Joel Klatt ranks Georgia behind Tennessee, Ohio State in his latest top 10 college football rankings

Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt released his top 10 college football rankings after rival week (Week 14). Klatt’s ranking underwent some major changes due to some high-profile upsets.

Rivalry week is always a spectacle in college football and the Georgia-Georgia Tech barnburner couldn’t have been a better start to the week. The Bulldogs trailed 17-0 at halftime, but Georgia rallied back to tie it 27-27 and sent the game to overtime.

In the first two overtimes, Georgia and Georgia Tech teams scored two touchdowns, but for the next five overtimes, it was a stalemate. Both teams had to score on alternating two-point conversions, and the teams only scored on one of the next five overtimes. The Bulldogs finally ended the game in the eighth overtime with a Nate Frazier run, winning the rivalry game 44-42. Georgia sits at No. 7 in Klatt’s rankings.

The Michigan vs. Ohio State game was one of several games with bad blood. The Wolverines and Buckeyes played in a gritty, physical game, deadlocked at 10-10 at halftime. Then, Michigan finally produced a productive drive, kicking a field goal with only 48 seconds left. Ohio State had one chance left, but the offense went four-and-out, and Michigan won The Game for the fourth time in a row.

After the game, both teams had a massive brawl because Michigan tied to plant their flag in the Ohio State logo. As a result of the loss, Ohio State falls down to No. 6 in Joel Klatt’s rankings.

The Miami Hurricanes dropped from Joel Klatt’s rankings altogether after a stunning 42-38 loss to Syracuse. In the second quarter, Miami had a 21-0 lead, but they blew it in disastrous fashion. Former Georgia assistant Fran Brown picked up his most impressive win of the season and Miami misses the ACC championship because of the loss.

Texas-Texas A&M had the most playoff implications of any game with the winners advancing to the SEC championship to play Georgia. Texas came out on top, winning 17-7. Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner had a career day, with 186 rushing yards on 33 carries, and the Longhorns defense didn’t allow the Aggies to score a single offensive touchdown.

The fourth College Football Playoff rankings on Dec. 3 will determine the fate of each team that didn’t make their conference championship. Penn State, Notre Dame, and Tennessee are surefire bets to make the playoffs. Miami and Ohio State still have a great chance despite losing. However, Miami will have to worry about Alabama, South Carolina, or Ole Miss potentially usurping the Hurricanes.

Next week is championship weekend. The Bulldogs play Texas in the SEC championship, Oregon and Penn State play in the Big Ten championship, Clemson and SMU facing off for the ACC title, and Iowa State matching up vs. Arizona State for the Big 12 championship. UNLV vs. Boise State (the Mountain West Championship) is the biggest game outside of the Power 4, but Tulane vs. Army from the American could be interesting if Army wins and Boise State loses.

Honorable Mentions: Ole Miss Rebels, South Carolina Gamecocks, Boise State Broncos, Miami Hurricanes

Best, worst PFF grades from Georgia’s amazing win over Georgia Tech

Georgia football’s best and worst PFF grades from their stunning eight overtime win over Georgia Tech

The Georgia Bulldogs looked vulnerable, but pulled through in their 44-42 eight overtime win vs. Georgia Tech. In Georgia’s win, several performers stood out. Carson Beck was surgical throwing the football with five touchdowns and no interceptions. Beck’s is improving his NFL draft stock.

The running back trio of Nate Frazier, Cash Jones, and Roderick Robinson made some great plays in this game, despite Georgia only amassing 108 rushing yards. Cash Jones had a beautiful touchdown in the second overtime off a wheel route, and Nate Frazier punched in the game-winning two-point conversion.

Unfortunately, several players also underperformed. The wide receiver room struggled outside of London Humphreys. Arian Smith had two crucial drops in the end zone, and Dominic Lovett fumbled the ball when Georgia was driving in the second quarter. The pass rushing unit was also pretty underwhelming, not making an impact until Georgia started blitzing more.

Takeaways from Georgia’s 8OT win over Georgia Tech

Four takeaways from Georgia football’s dramatic win over Georgia Tech.

The No. 8 Georgia Bulldogs (10-2) beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (7-5) in an all-time classic edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate.

The Yellow Jackets had a 17-0 lead at the end of the first half and held a 27-13 lead with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter. However, the Bulldogs’ offense finally woke up, scoring two touchdowns in six minutes, including one on a short field after safety Dan Jackson forced a fumble.

In the first two overtimes, Georgia and Georgia Tech scored touchdowns relatively quickly. The two teams were in a stalemate once teams were forced to do alternating two-point conversions with both teams failing to score in all but one of the next five overtimes.

In overtime No. 8, Georgia finally punched it in with a Nate Frazier rushing conversion. The freezing and tired UGA fans left the stadium gleeful at midnight, with Georgia winning 44-42.

To some, this win was not impressive. Georgia Tech had 158 more yards than Georgia and 152 more rushing yards. Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King, battling a shoulder injury before the game, had his best performance of the season with 413 total yards and five total touchdowns. Overall, Georgia Tech drove the ball within Georgia’s 25 on seven of their ten drives before overtime.

The Georgia offense saved the day for the Bulldogs. Carson Beck had five touchdown passes and 297 yards. He has 11 touchdowns and no interceptions since Georgia lost to Ole Miss. Beck could’ve had more if it weren’t for some crucial drops by Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett.

Georgia wraps up its season with a 10-2 record. Winning against Georgia Tech was huge for its playoff ambitions. If Georgia lost against Tech and lost the SEC championship, then the Bulldogs would be 9-4 and more than likely out of the College Football Playoff. Georgia still has issues of playing down to competition.

Georgia Tech wraps up its season at 7-5. The Yellow Jackets were a feel-good story in college football, with two wins against top 10 opponents (Florida State, Miami) and a devil-may-care attitude in the running game. Tech looks much improved under Brent Key.

Here are four key takeaways from Georgia’s win over Georgia tech:

Carson Beck is improving his draft stock

Even after Georgia quarterback Carson Beck’s rough stat line against the SEC, some still believed that Beck had first-round pick talent and that Beck could jump back into mock draft conversations with solid performances.

In a month after his worst performance against Ole Miss, Beck is bouncing back. He has 11 touchdowns and no interceptions in the last three games, including five touchdowns in Georgia’s win over Georgia Tech. Beck was the biggest reason Georgia wasn’t upset.

Georgia’s run defense is an issue

Dale Zanine-Imagn Images

Many people were clamoring for the Georgia Bulldogs run defense to show improvement after the UMass Minutemen gashed Georgia for 226 yards. Unfortunately, those people didn’t get their wish. Georgia Tech’s rush offense was a nuisance all game.

Georgia Tech coach Brent Key called several designed runs with Jamal Haynes and Haynes King to confuse Georgia’s linebackers. On the runs up the gut, the Georgia Tech offensive line bullied the Georgia front seven most of the time.

Open-field tackling was a big issue. Georgia was consistently beaten on the first and second levels in the running game. The Bulldogs solved this by putting more defenders in the box. Not only did that decision stifle the Georgia Tech running game; but it also forced Haynes King to make quicker decisions due to blitzes.

Georgia gained much-needed running back depth

The Bulldogs have struggled with injuries to running back depth throughout this entire season. Against Georgia Tech, Georgia got some much-needed help in the backfield. Cash Jones was dynamic in the receiving game with a beautiful wheel route on Georgia’s second touchdown in overtime. Roderick Robinson II was solid in his first game back from a turf toe injury.

Those two running backs helped take the load off Nate Frazier, who only had 50 yards on 11 carries. Frazier came through in the clutch with the game-winning two-point conversion.

This is why people love college football

Regardless of which side people cheered for in the Georgia-Georgia Tech game, this game was legendary. This game was an instant classic, from the cold weather to the heart-stopping plays to the midnight ending.

Eight overtimes is the second most overtimes any matchup has gone to in college football history. College football fans are thankful that it also happened during a rivalry game. The newest edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate might’ve been the most entertaining.

Running back duo clutches up for Georgia

Georgia’s running back duo comes through in critical moments in UGA’s 8OT win over Georgia Tech

In a banged up running back room, Georgia counted on Nate Frazier and Cash Jones in Georgia’s eight overtime win over Georgia Tech. Frazier and Jones both delivered key plays in overtime with starter Trevor Etienne sidelined due to a ribs injury.

Frazier and Jones both stepped up in the passing and run game to help elevate the Bulldogs in their 44-42 victory.

Cash Jones stepped up in big moments with blocking in the pass game or being the complementary back.

Against Georgia Tech, Jones was a security blanket all night turning those check downs into first downs for the offense. He was Carson Beck’s most reliable receiver all night.

Jones’ biggest reception was the 25-yard wheel route that turned into a touchdown in the second overtime. Jones ended the game with four receptions, team-leading 53 yards, and one touchdown. This marks the sixth game where Jones had more than 20 receiving yards this season.

Nate Frazier was a consistent light when the times were looking dark when the offense could not get anything going.

Frazier has scored a touchdown in all but one game when he touches the football 10 times or more. Frazier ended the Georgia Tech game with 13 touches, 68 yards, and one touchdown.

In overtime the offense went away from Frazier. Frazier finally got his hands on the football in the eighth overtime period. He ended the game when he found a cutback lane and he scored the game-winning two point conversion.

How Georgia can win, cover against Georgia Tech

How can Georgia football win and cover against Georgia Tech?

The Georgia Bulldogs are large 17.5-point home favorites against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in Week 14 of the college football season.

Momentum on the Offense

For the past two games, we have seen the Georgia offense humming with multiple contributors at a high rate. Quarterback Carson Beck is the engine that makes the UGA offense go. In his last two games, Beck totaled 644 yards, 6 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions, with a passer rating over 90 in both contests. In the UMass game, freshman running back Nate Frazier had a 100 plus yards on the ground and three touchdowns.

Front Seven

The UGA front seven steps up in moments when Georgia needs them the most. In the Texas and Tennessee games you saw the likes of Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams step up. The front seven is zoned in and shut out Tennessee in the second half.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere in Sanford Stadium is always electric, especially when the stakes are high. The crowd plays a major role in creating a hostile environment, making it difficult for opposing teams to execute under pressure.
The energy is amplified when Georgia fans are fully invested in the rivalry, making it a tough challenge for any team to come in and compete. This energy, combined with Georgia’s talent, creates an intimidating atmosphere that benefits the Bulldogs. There’s a reason that Georgia has won 30 straight home games.

Philo scrambled for an 18-yard game-winning touchdown with only 22 seconds left, showcasing his composure under pressure.

He called the moment a “childhood dream” reflecting his growing confidence as a young player. Philo has attempted 43 passes over the past two weeks.

Quarterback Haynes King

In the Miami game, King ran for 93 yards and a touchdown while also passing for another score, helping the Yellow Jackets secure their first win over a top-five team in 15 years. His decisive 5-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter played a key role in the victory, solidifying his impact as a rusher. King has attempted just nine passes over the past two weeks.

Running Back Jamal Haynes

Georgia releases hype video before Georgia Tech game

UGA football drops an epic hype video to get fans fired up ahead of the Georgia Tech game

The No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs (9-2, 6-2) host the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets  (7-4, 5-3) in a key rivalry game to start off the last weekend of the regular season..

Georgia’s hype video for the Georgia Tech game is “Fourth Quarter Mentality”. With the slow starts that have been happening this season, UGA needs to start playing like it is the fourth quarter in the first quarter. Everyone knows that Georgia Tech can come into Athens and compete for an upset win.

In the video a quote was said, “What if we played with the fourth quarter mentality in the beginning of the game?”

Georgia has struggled to start games fast, but finds a way in the second half to find that extra gear. Georgia Tech has scored double digits in the first half all but one time so far this season, so UGA needs to win the first 30 minutes. That fourth quarter mentality is something that head coach Kirby Smart wants to see from his team to make sure they can seal the victory Friday.

This could be the last home game for many seniors on UGA’s roster.

Georgia, Georgia Tech share number of coaching ties

Coaching links, overlap heavy between Georgia football and Georgia Tech

The Georgia versus Georgia Tech rivalry pits players who once shared high school fields against one another. However, this year’s Georgia-Georgia Tech matchup goes beyond the players with notable crossover among the coaching staffs.

Georgia’s offensive staff features first-year running backs coach Josh Crawford, a longtime high school coach in Georgia who spent last season coaching receivers at Georgia Tech. In February, Crawford made the switch to UGA, taking on a new role with Georgia.

“I don’t know many people that have had to go out and play with three true freshmen in a critical, pivotal game, which really happened against Tennessee. Those kids didn’t flinch, and he didn’t flinch,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said of Crawford. “He’s very intelligent, demands excellence, and has done a great job preparing his players for big moments. He was also a very successful high school coach in this state, which is huge.”

Another former Yellow Jacket now contributing to Georgia is Andrew Thacker, Georgia Tech’s former defensive coordinator, serves as an analyst for the Bulldogs. Thacker has embraced his new role and is valued for his energy and enthusiasm, according to Smart. “He’s been a great asset for us. He knows his role, defines it well, and brings a lot of excitement and energy to our defense,” Smart said.

On the other side, Georgia Tech boasts its own staff members with Bulldog ties, including offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who worked as an analyst for Georgia during the Dawgs’ back-to-back national championship seasons in 2021 and 2022.

“Buster was incredible in terms of insight, ideas, work habits, and recruiting. He worked extremely hard while he was here,” Smart said. “As an analyst, you have to find the balance between proving yourself and staying within your role. He did that perfectly. He made me a better coach, and he’s a great father and husband as well.”

[lawrence-auto-related count=2]

Buster Faulkner has revitalized the Yellow Jackets’ offense, showing significant improvement across the board. In 2022, the offense struggled mightily, averaging just 17 points per game and 192 passing yards per game, which ranked second-to-last and last in the ACC, respectively. Georgia Tech managed only 10 rushing touchdowns, placing 12th out of 14 ACC teams.

Fast forward to the 2024 season, and Georgia Tech’s offense has taken a major leap under Faulkner’s guidance. The Yellow Jackets now averages 27 points per game, a 10-point improvement, with a solid passing attack generating 234 yards per game. On the ground, they’ve become a dominant force, tying for first in the ACC with 26 rushing touchdowns.

With connections running deep on both sidelines, this year’s edition of Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate promises to be as competitive as ever. Georgia plays Georgia Tech at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday night. The game will be televised on ABC.

Bowers got on the board first with this huge 77-yard catch and run for a score in the first half.

Bowers found the endzone once more in Georgia’s first possession of the second half.

We’re not sure why Bowers is not a finalist for the Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end.

The Napa, Cal. native has 3 catches for 100 yards and two touchdowns so far and already leads Georgia in receptions, yards and touchdowns on the season.
