Georgia transfer, son of NFL coach, commits to Michigan

Georgia loses a transfer, who’s the son of an NFL coach, to the Michigan Wolverines

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Troy Bowles committed to the Michigan Wolverines out of the transfer portal on Saturday. Bowles was a four-star recruit and the No. 6 linebacker in the class of 2023. Bowles is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Todd Bowles.

Bowles played sparingly as a reserve with the Georgia Bulldogs. He appeared in seven games: five in 2023 and two in 2024. In 2023, he recorded five tackles, including three against UT Martin.

In the wake of C.J. Allen’s emergence as an every down linebacker, along with Chris Cole and Raylen Wilson getting more playing time, Bowles announced his decision to transfer on Dec. 13.

He joins a group of SEC transfers committing to the maize and blue. Brothers TJ and Tevis Metcalf join the Wolverines from Arkansas, and Belleville, Michigan, native Damon Payne transferred from Alabama.

Bowles will have three more years of eligibility for the Wolverines. Given his father’s expertise, he has a great football background.

Six Georgia defenders have entered the portal since the window opened. Of those, three have not announced a new destination. Cornerback Julian Humphrey transferred to Texas A&M, and Jamaal Jarrett committed to transfer to USC, following the Bear Alexander route.

Georgia football has had four players enter the NCAA transfer portal since it opened on Monday

Several Georgia Bulldogs have already enter the NCAA transfer portal after it officially opened on Monday, Dec. 9. Georgia will be targeting players to bring in and assessing who will be able to play in the Sugar Bowl and who will be transferring out over the next few weeks.

Last season, Georgia lost 24 players to the transfer portal and brought in 11 players via the portal. Head coach Kirby Smart does not like to rely on the portal, but he does use it to fill holes on UGA’s roster and to add depth at key positions.

Georgia has already signed 25 commitment in the class of 2025. The Bulldogs have the nation’s No. 3 recruiting class, so Georgia will have an influx of freshman talent next year.

The transfer portal window is open from Dec. 9 to Dec. 28, which is days before Georgia’s College Football Playoff quarterfinal game on Jan. 1. However, the window extends to five days after the end of the season for each respective team. Georgia’s portal window ends on Jan. 6 at the earliest.

Checking on Georgia football transfers after Week 4

Taking a look at how Georgia transfers are performing following Week 4

The Georgia Bulldogs have a lot more players that transfer away from the football program than transfer into it. Why is that?

A large number of Georgia players are unable to get as much playing time as they’d prefer. Additionally, some players want to transfer closer to home or to somewhere that will give them a full scholarship. Georgia has had several walk-on players that have transferred to other programs and earned much bigger roles with their new teams.

Let’s take a look at how several former Georgia Bulldogs performed through the first four weeks of the 2022 college football season.

Former UGA football WR Matt Landers announces transfer destination

Former Georgia and Toledo football wide receiver Matt Landers has transferred for a second consecutive offseason.

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Matt Landers transferred to the Toledo Rockets football program after the 2020 college football season. Now, the Toledo receiver is on the move again. Landers is transferring back into the SEC to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Matt Landers has three seasons of college football experience. He caught 20 passes for 514 yards and scored five touchdowns last season for Toledo.

Landers, a former three-star recruit, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining. He is an excellent blocker and should have a fairly large role for Arkansas.

The 6-foot-5, 200-pound receiver caught 12 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown during his two season career with the Georgia Bulldogs.

Landers, who was Toledo’s third-leading receiver last season, announced his transfer to the Razorbacks via his Twitter account:

Former UGA football DB enters transfer portal

Former Georgia defensive back Daran Branch has entered the NCAA transfer portal

Former Georgia Bulldogs defensive back Daran Branch has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Branch was a three-star recruit in the class of 2020. Branch played high school football at Amite High School in Louisiana.

Before committing to the University of Georgia, Branch had been committed to the Ole Miss Rebels. Kirby Smart and the Dawgs were able to get him to flip on signing day in 2020.

The former three-star defensive back was not with the Bulldogs for the 2021 season while he debated his football future. Branch recorded one tackle in one game in 2020. The former Amite star has regained interest in returning to college football.

Daran Branch, Kelee Ringo, Jalen Kimber and Major Burns combined to form Georgia’s four scholarship defensive backs in the class of 2020.

Kimber has transferred to Florida. Branch is no longer with the team and is in the portal. Burns transferred to LSU. Ringo, a former five-star, did have a game-clinching interception return for a touchdown in the national championship game.

Kirby Smart and the Dawgs can be proud they landed Ringo in the class of 2020. Georgia had to make efforts to reload at the position in the class of 2022 with four more defensive back signees.

Former Georgia football WR picks transfer destination

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Matt Landers entered the NCAA transfer portal following the 2020 season. Now, he’s headed to Toledo.

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Matt Landers entered the NCAA transfer portal following the 2020 season. Now, the St. Petersburg High School product is transferring to the Toledo Rockets football program.

Matt Landers will join Toledo as a member of the junior class. He will be immediately eligible for the Rockets. We wish him luck as he looks for a larger role with his new team.

Landers came to Athens, Georgia, as a three-star recruit. He is an excellent blocker. Improved consistency would go a long way for Landers. He played in nine regular season games during the 2020 season, but ultimately he fell belowGeorge Pickens, Kearis Jackson, Arian Smith, Jermaine Burton, and Demetris Robertson on the wide receiver depth chart at Georgia.

Matt Landers will be a mid-year enrollee for the Toledo Rockets. Toledo announced the move via their official Twitter account:

Georgia football’s JC Vega no longer looking to transfer

Georgia Bulldogs long snapper JC Vega entered into the transfer portal earlier this offseason, but now he is no longer looking to transfer.

Georgia Bulldogs long snapper JC Vega entered into the transfer portal earlier this offseason, but now he is no longer looking to transfer. He redshirted last season as a freshman.

The Buford High School graduate came to the University of Georgia as a four-star long snapper recruit and the No. 21 long snapper in his class. Vega helped the Buford Wolves win four straight regional championships, including a couple of state championship appearances. Vega also wrestled in high school in addition to playing football.

Vega’s decision is a reminder that not all players who enter the portal are guaranteed to leave UGA. Although, former Georgia Bulldogs Kolby Wyatt and Makiya Tongue have both already found new homes this offseason.

That being said, all players who do transfer this offseason will be immediately eligible at their new schools. This offseason should see a ton of roster management between players going pro, other players potentially transferring, or seniors returning for one more year.

The Buford High School product announced his decision to stay at Georgia via Twitter:

We’ll update you if Vega decides to transfer elsewhere. Vega will look to earn more playing time at his next college football destination. Not all players who enter the portal are guaranteed to leave UGA.

Vega joins reserve tight end Kolby Wyatt as Georgia players who have entered into the NCAA’s transfer portal since Georgia’s loss to Florida.
