Kirby Smart talks Georgia’s offense in win over Clemson

Kirby Smart talks Georgia’s offense in win over Clemson

Georgia took down Clemson on Saturday night by a score of 10-3.

No offensive touchdowns were scored. The lone touchdown of the game came late in the first half when Georgia defensive back Christopher Smith took an interception 74 yards to the house.

So that’s good news but it’s also not-so-good news.

The good news: Georgia’s defense is the best in the nation.

The not-so-good news: Georgia’s offense, which was expected to be highly explosive, has some work to do.

Now, it’s important to remember that the Dawgs were missing some of their top firepower on offense. Tight end Darnell Washington and wide receivers Arik Gilbert, Dominick Blaylock and George Pickens were all out. Starting offensive guard Tate Ratledge injured his foot early in the game and is now sidelined for the rest of the year.,

It’s also important to remember that right behind UGA, Clemson probably has the nation’s second best defense.

But there were certainly some things that were frightening.

Now I may be wrong, but I don’t recall Georgia taking a single shot downfield all night. Where was the passing game? Superstar quarterback JT Daniels only had 135 yards, no touchdowns and 1 interception. It just felt as if something was off.

On Monday, Kirby Smart spoke to the media, covering topics regarding the Clemson win and discussing the upcoming game against UAB this Saturday.

Here we compiled a few of his quotes about Georgia’s offense in the win over Clemson. Overall, it sounds like Kirby is not very concerned with the offensive performance, which is good news. See what he had to say below…

On the performance of the offense…

“Well, I think, you’ve got to be careful, because with the receptions, you’ve got to score touchdowns, and we didn’t.  So, we’re a very matter of fact judgement and it’s like ‘okay so we didn’t score but, why?  Why did we not?’  You go through the reasons why and you go through each play.  A lot of it was attention to detail, not converting on third down, missing a couple of explosives.

They played us very different than what you would normally say a Clemson team would play.  They prepared for speed breaks and shots and fast balls because that’s what they had given up.  They did a good job of defending that. But, to say that we didn’t function or didn’t run the ball well – I mean, we ran the ball well at times. Any time you can run the ball down someone’s throat in four minutes, it’s pretty obvious that they knew we had to run the ball there and we were still able to, so we did some really good things offensively.

Hey, I’m excited to see what our guys can do moving forward.  The greatest jump you make is from Game One to Game Two, so we got to find a way to be more explosive.  You can see on tape that it’s there, so I’m glad we got the attention of those guys.”

On Brock Bowers, who had 6 receptions for 43 yards in his debut…

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA – SEPTEMBER 04: Brock Bowers #19 of the Georgia Bulldogs breaks away from Baylon Spector #10 of the Clemson Tigers during the second half of the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of America Stadium on September 04, 2021 in Charlotte, North Carolina. (Photo by Grant Halverson/Getty Images)

“Well, several of those were right targets just for Brock, he was the open guy.  Some of that was get the ball out quick against a really good pass rush, and not being able to see… how long are we going to be able to protect?  Are we going to be able to get vertical down the field?  What’s the easiest way to throw a short pass to the tight end?  Who do they probably least expect?  Brock Bowers.  So, a lot of that is happenstance, but he’s certainly a good player, and not every play that he got the other night was designed for him.  It just ended up that way because some of those RPO’s, some of those were boots, and there’s two or three options.”

On wide receiver Jermaine Burton, who had a great freshman season in 2020 but a quiet night on Saturday with only two catches…

“We’ve had roughly 45 practices. Out of the 45 practices he’s practiced 10-15 times. He missed a lot of time, and he was already a young player last year who grew.  For him, he knows the upside. His best football is in front of him, and he has done everything we asked in terms of getting well. Rehab and pushing himself, but he’s not in game shape. He’s not in game speed. We’ve got to improve that and work on it. He’s certainly a very talented football player that were excited about. And he will help us be explosive. He’s just got to practice more.

On JT Daniels and the game plan against Clemson…

“All the talk about the weapons that he does and doesn’t have is a moot point. That’s what everyone wants to talk about and you can make excuses for me, for JT, for coach (Todd) Monken, but we’ve got good football players. We have to take the football players we have and be explosive. It doesn’t matter who is out there. That’s just pity or something. We have to be explosive. We have to get better at it. The way they played us and what our game plan was… Protect JT and get the ball out, have some different protections, and some different things. The game plan was to not get in third and longs. We didn’t get in many third and longs. How many sacks did we give up guys, one. Check Clemson’s average (sacks) per game. The game plan was to be efficient and be in manageable down and distances. Get the ball out of JT’s hands. I feel like we did a good job of doing that. We didn’t do it consistently enough to score points.”

Watch: Trevor Lawrence loses bet with former UGA WR, forced to wear Georgia gear

Watch: Trevor Lawrence loses bet with Terry Godwin, forced to wear Georgia gear

Former Georgia wide receiver and former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence apparently had a friendly wager going for Saturday night’s matchup between the Bulldogs and the Tigers.

After Georgia’s dominant defensive showing, which helped UGA to a 10-3 victory, the Jacksonville Jaguars teammates shared a laugh as Lawrence, the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, showed up to the Jags locker room wearing Georgia gear.

Godwin, who played wide receiver for the Dawgs from 2015-18, recorded the interaction and shared it to social media on Monday.

Godwin had a solid career at UGA, reeling in 134 catches for 1800 yards and 11 touchdowns.

He’ll always be remembered mostly for his epic one-hander against Notre Dame in 2017.

Report: Georgia loses starting OL for rest of season

Tate Ratledge done for the year.

Georgia will be without starting offensive lineman Tate Ratledge for the remainder of the 2021 season, per a Facebook post from the redshirt freshman’s mother.

Ratledge injured his foot very early in Saturday night’s win over Clemson and had to be taken to the locker room via cart after being helped to the sideline.

He will undergo surgery for a lisfranc ligament injury, per Marc Weiszer of OnlineAthens.com.

Ratledge, a 4-star recruit in the class of 2020 out of Darlington School in Rome, Georgia, was making his first career start and playing in his second career game.

“Thank you to everyone for the thoughts and prayers! I’ll be back! #GoDawgs Romans 5:3-5,” the 6-foot-6, 320-pound Ratledge tweeted.

Junior Warren Ericson checked in to fill in for Ratledge.

Ratledge was later seen wearing a boot on the sideline.

Clemson HC Dabo Swinney after Georgia loss: ‘That was a heavyweight fight’

Dabo Swinney: ‘That was a heavyweight fight’

No offensive touchdowns were scored on Saturday night during the top-five battle between the Georgia Bulldogs and Clemson Tigers.

Georgia escaped with a 10-3 win, exhibiting defensive dominance all night, holding Clemson to 180 total yards, 2 yards rushing and recording 7 sacks.

Clemson fans surely are not hanging their heads because of their team’s defensive effort.

Georgia’s high powered offense struggled.

JT Daniels, a preseason Heisman hopeful, only threw for 135 yards on 22/30 passing. He definitely struggled.

Defense was the name of the game on Saturday night.

“Obviously we’re incredibly disappointed with the outcome of the game, but congratulations to Georgia, that was a heavyweight fight,” Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney said after the game.

“Really tough matchup just like we knew it was going to be. We knew points were going to be hard to come by.”

Georgia’s front seven was ferocious, tallying seven sacks on the night and making life miserable for Clemson’s offensive line and quarterback DJ Uiagalelei.

Inside linebacker Nakobe Dean played like a superstar, recording 2 sacks. Outside linebackers Adam Anderson and Nolan Smith each got one. Defensive linemen Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter and Travon walker all made their way into the sack column as well with one each.

“Georgia’s a great front,” Swinney continued. “They’re incredibly talented and so are we…We started a true freshman at left guard…This was two really good football teams tonight and that’s going to prove out to be the case as we go through the season. Tonight, they made a few more plays than we did. We’ve got to grow up from it.”

As mentioned earlier, it was not all pretty for Georgia. The Bulldogs’ offense struggled about as much as the Tigers’ offense did.

Superstar quarterback JT Daniels did not look great. The run game had nice moments, but they were far and few between. Overall, it looked Georgia’s offense pre-Daniels.

Swinney commented on his team’s defensive performance against the Dawgs.

“We felt like we matched up well in the run game and we did. Wish we could’ve better job of keeping them off the field, but we dropped eight and had a lot of stunts and twists. We were able to get some pressure. We did a good job, just changing it up and trying to give them different looks. We felt like if we could manage the run game and get them out of what they wanted to do, we matched up pretty well.”

Despite win, Georgia still below Clemson in ESPN’s FPI

Despite win, Georgia still below Clemson in ESPN’s FPI

Georgia’s 10-3 win over Clemson on Saturday night was nothing short impressive for Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs.

It was maybe the most dominant defensive performance in the history of Georgia football, holding Clemson to just 2 rushing yards and 180 total yards.

Georgia had its own offensive woes, but at the end of the day, it beat Clemson, the second most dominant football program of the last 10 years.

But despite the win, ESPN’s Football Power Index is still favoring the Tigers over the Bulldogs in its rankings.

The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward. It is not meant to be a ranking system. Each team’s FPI rating is composed of a predicted offensive, defensive and special teams component.

Georgia checked in at No. 5 before the game, and on Sunday morning after the rankings had been updated, the Dawgs remain in that same spot.

The top-five is as follows:

  1. Alabama
  2. Clemson
  3. Ohio State
  4. Oklahoma
  5. Georgia

Georgia vs Clemson: Behind 7 sacks, Bulldogs smother Tigers

Bulldogs smother Tigers

How ’bout them Dawgs?

No. 5 ranked Georgia (1-0, 0-0) took down No. 3 ranked Clemson (0-1, 0-0) Saturday night in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium by a score of 10-3.

It was not always pretty, but it sure was effective. We just witnessed maybe the greatest display of defense in the history of Georgia football.

Going up against a Clemson team that’s expected to be an offensive powerhouse, the Georgia defense did not flinch.

In fact, it simply dominated.

A ferocious pass rush, which recorded 7 sacks, held Clemson to just 180 yards of total offense.

Every time the Tigers thought they were about to move the ball, Georgia simply did not let them.

Only six points were scored offensively by both teams combined. The difference was a second quarter pick-six by Georgia junior defensive back Christopher Smith. That proved to be enough.

Oh, and Clemson only rushed for two yards the whole night.

Tigers’ quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, a preseason Heisman hopeful, looked far from it. Georgia held the young quarterback to 178 yards on 19/37 passing.

But what about Georgia’s offense?

Well, Clemson fans surely are not hanging their heads because of their team’s defensive effort.

Georgia’s high powered offense struggled.

JT Daniels, another preseason Heisman hopeful, only threw for 135 yards on 22/30 passing. He definitely struggled.

Zamir White put the Dawgs on his back at the end of it. He did not have huge numbers on Saturday – 74 yards on 13 carries – but he stepped up when it matters.

Georgia has work to do offensively. But then again, this was definitely the best defense the Dawgs will play all season.

Celebrate. We just beat Clemson.

J.T. Daniels throws a pick, Georgia defense saves day with two sacks

J.T. Daniels throws a pick, Georgia defense saves day with two sacks

J.T. Daniels threw an interception that gave Clemson the ball at the Georgia 34-yard line.

It could have been very costly.

Thankfully for Georgia, its defense is absolutely ferocious tonight.

Instead of Clemson coming away with points or even sniffing the end zone, the Dawgs’ defense got to Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei twice and forced Clemson into another punt.

That’s five sacks for the Dawgs tonight.

Halftime Report: Georgia leads Clemson 7-0

Halftime Report: Georgia leads Clemson 7-0

In a game where offense has been hard to come by, Georgia finds itself leading 7-0 thanks to a Christopher Smith pick six midway through the second quarter.

Georgia has held Clemson to 1 rushing yard tonight but has only accounted for 42 of its own.

Like I said, not much offense.

If there’s one big takeaway from this game so far, it’s that this Georgia defense is absolutely ferocious.

Georgia has held Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagelelei to just 89 yards on 10/20 passing. Georgia has been applying pressure and rattling the young quarterback.

But for Clemson, the Tigers are likely proud of their defensive effort as well.

Star quarterback JT Daniels has not been able to do much. He’s 13/16 for only 68 passing yards.

Georgia kicker Jack Podlesny missed a short field goal that should have given Georgia an earlier lead.

Dawgs strike first! Pick six puts UGA up 7-0

With the offense struggling and unable to make things happen, it was up to the defense to get it done.

Boom!

With the offense struggling and unable to make things happen, it was up to the defense to get it done.

And get it done they did.

On 3rd and 4, with Clemson rolling and at the UGA 30 yard line, Georgia junior defensive back stepped in between the ball and the receiver and picked off Clemson freshman quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and took the interception 74 yards to the house.

Dawgs lead it 7-0.
