Takeaways from Georgia’s 41-34 defeat vs. Alabama

Top takeaways from the back-and-forth Georgia and Alabama game.

The formerly No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs had a massive game against the No. 4 Alabama Crimson Tide, and they couldn’t come through, losing a 41-34 barnburner that saw them recover from a 30-7 score by halftime to take the lead, only to give it away 18 seconds later. It’s fitting that it was the Crimson Tide, who have long been the arch rival of Georgia, ended several historic winning streaks Georgia had entering this game.

Arguably, neither team deserved to win more than the other, but the Bulldogs played horrendously on both sides of the ball in the first half. The Georgia defense allowed the Alabama offense to score on almost every single possession and Carson Beck throwing two interceptions and missing several key throws. Georgia played well enough to win in the second half, but their defense crumbled one last time, while the offense stalled out at the Alabama 20 with Carson Beck throwing his third interception.

As a result, the Bulldogs have moved down to No. 5 on the US LBM Coaches Poll, below SEC competitors Tennessee, Texas, and, of course, Alabama. Here are five takeaways from the game as a whole.

Secondary play was a big reason for the loss

There were concerns on how the defense was going to stop Jalen Milroe, and unfortunately, they rarely stopped him in this game. A big part of that was the secondary. Two weeks after earning a spot on the All-SEC team, Julian Humphrey was exposed several times on man-to-man coverage against Ryan Williams and Emmanuel Henderson Jr.

It wasn’t just him: KJ Bolden had some blown coverages, Malaki Starks gave up an electric play to Williams, and overall, Jalen Milroe had arguably the best game of his career passing the ball, which leads me to my next point.

Nobody could stop Jalen Milroe

Jalen Milroe as a passer was amazing, but Jalen Milroe the runner was even better. The Georgia defense couldn’t contend with his speed when he held onto the ball. Even when the defensive line came through, they couldn’t take him down and when he got in the open field, no one could tackle him. There were several missed tackles that made him look like college Lamar Jackson.

Nobody else in the Alabama backfield had over 35 yards or six carries except for Milroe, who had 117 yards and two touchdowns on just 16 carries, good enough for 7.3 yards per carry.

Carson Beck has some work to do

Milroe’s counterpart Carson Beck had a shaky game. He had his moments that proved why some consider him the best QB prospect for the upcoming 2025 NFL draft, but he also had moments that actively made it harder for Georgia to come back.

Beck has immense arm talent. When he throws the ball downfield, he does it with enough zip to complete it to any receiver, even on the deepest of plays. Sometimes, even on the run, he’s able to deliver an accurate ball. It showed in the second half of the game, where he was much better.

However, he stares at his read for too long. That was one of the biggest reasons why he had three interceptions; Alabama defenders keyed in on his reads. He had a couple more dropped interceptions too.

Georgia’s was mismatched in the trenches

Georgia also lost this game from both sides of the trenches. On the defensive side, they were hurting from having Mykel Williams, Warren Brinson, and Jordan Hall all banged up. This caused neutralized their pass rushagainst Alabama’s superb offensive line. They had some good moments, but the defensive line was mostly prey to Jalen Milroe’s scrambling abilities.

Meanwhile, the offensive line was reeling from losing Tate Ratledge a couple week ago. Alabama called a ton of blitzes, and the offensive line of Georgia wasn’t able to stop all of them. This resulted in an interception and an intentional grounding which became a safety.

Georgia still has a tough schedule

For those of you thinking Georgia is out of playoff contention with this loss, there’s nothing to fear. With the expanded playoff, Georgia still has a 61% chance of making the postseason. However, what will keep Georgia fans up at night is the gauntlet they’ll have to face in the coming weeks.

After somewhat easier matchups vs. Auburn and Mississippi State, Georgia will have to play No. 2 Texas, No. 4 Tennessee, and No. 11 Ole Miss in the span of five weeks. Only the Tennessee game is at home.

With how Texas and Alabama has been playing, losing to them could knock Georgia out of consideration for the SEC championship, and with Tennessee and Ole Miss also competing for playoff spots, Georgia might need to win two of the three between Texas, Tennessee, and Ole Miss to make the dance. None of the top 12 teams in the rankings had more than two losses entering the final week of the season last year.

Kirk Herbstreit after UGA game ‘That’s what makes college football the best”

What college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said in the moments following Alabama’s 41-34 win over Georgia

ESPN college football analyst and commentator Kirk Herbstreit was impressed with what he saw in the Alabama Crimson Tide’s 41-34 win over the Georgia Bulldogs. Both teams had overwhelming, dominant halves of football.

Alabama outscored Georgia 30-7 in the first half. The game looked like a blowout, but Georgia and quarterback Carson Beck mounted a second half comeback that came up just a hair short.

“That was one hell of a football game with Alabama and Georgia,” said Herbstreit. “Just want to congratulate both those teams, obviously Alabama ends up winning.”

Alabama won after Georgia quarterback Carson Beck threw his third interception of the game in the end zone. Turnovers haunted Georgia in their first regular season loss since 2020.

“Jalen Milroe… I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a game like that. First half, running and throwing,” added Herbstreit. “Doing so many great things. Looks like Georgia can never stop them and then Kirby (Smart) and Glenn Schumann some great adjustments at halftime. Their defense just kept fighting to give them a fight in the second half.”

Georgia did a good job of adapting to a terrible situation. Carson Beck posted huge numbers in the second half despite facing numerous obvious passing situations. Georgia converted on five fourth downs as Carson Beck finished the game with 439 passing yards with four touchdowns.

“Congrats to both teams… Got a feeling these two teams have a good chance of seeing each other whether it is in Atlanta where it is the playoff,” said Herbstreit. “I just want to see more of it. These two teams never let us down. Thank you to both the teams, the coaches, the fans… that’s what makes college football the best!”

The Georgia-Alabama game was very interesting for neutral viewers provided they did not dip out at halftime. In the end Alabama won, but Georgia showed the heart of a champion in the second half.

What UGA offensive linemen have to step up with Tate Ratledge out

Two UGA offensive linemen have to step up with Tate Ratledge out

Georgia Bulldogs All-SEC offensive guard Tate Ratledge is out for an extended period of time after undergoing tightrope surgery on his ankle. Ratledge suffered his injury in the first half against Kentucky, so Georgia has a taste of life without their star offensive guard.

However, Georgia’s offense did not exactly perform as expected against Kentucky. The Bulldogs scored just 13 points and did not surpass 300 total yards of offense.

Georgia will have to rely on offensive guard Micah Morris to fill in for Tate Ratledge. Morris regularly receives snaps as part of Georgia’s offensive line rotation. Morris, who appeared in 13 games last season, has seen action in all three of Georgia’s games to start the 2024 season.

“We play Micah (Morris) a lot,” said Georgia coach Kirby Smart. “So, we have three guards that play. That’s why we do that because there’s a chance of injury and we play three guys. So, I didn’t see a lot different with him going out. Micah stepped in and played. Micah probably had to play more than he typically does, and he and Dylan (Fairchild) did a good job.”

Morris has plenty of experience and should be ready to step in. He’ll have an extra week to prepare for Georgia’s big road game against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Sept. 28.

Another offensive lineman that becomes more important with Tate Ratledge out is offensive tackle Monroe Freeling. The 6-foot-7, 315-pound offensive tackle has played in all three of Georgia’s games to start the 2024 season. Freeling, a sophomore, saw an uptick in snaps against Kentucky.

Reaction: Officials don’t review questionable Alabama fourth down catch

The officials of the Alabama-Georgia game elected not to review a controversial Alabama fourth down catch play.

The officials of the SEC championship elected not to review a controversial Alabama fourth down conversion. Alabama wide receiver Isaiah Bond appeared to catch a fourth down play for about 20 yards. Alabama snapped the ball without the playing being reviewed. Alabama went on to score a touchdown a few plays later.

When taking a closer look at Isaiah Bond’s catch, the ball clearly moved after he hit the ground. Bond did have some control of the ball. However, CBS officiating expert Gene Steratone said after halftime the play should have been reviewed, and he did not think it was a catch.

The officials later went on to review a 51-yard catch by Georgia wide receiver Arian Smith. Go figure.

The officials have a tough job, but they have to review close plays like Isaiah Bond’s catch. They may have ruled that the call on the field stands, but the play was certainly worth a review.

Look: Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa follows through on bet, wears UGA gear

Looking good, Tua!

It may have taken former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa six weeks to follow through, but on Tuesday he delivered on a bet he lost over the outcome of the national championship game.

Tagovailoa, now part of the Miami Dolphins, came up short in a bet with 2015 Georgia grad Anne Noland, who is the Dolphins’ senior director of football communications.

Georgia’s win meant Tagovailoa, who is entering his third season with Miami, had to don Georgia gear, which he was photographed doing on Tuesday.

“It took 6 whole weeks of waiting, but @Tua remains a man of his word (despite significant eye rolling), finally taking his National Championship loss in stride today,” Noland wrote. “How bout them Dawgs! #GoDawgs … And as always, #FinsUp”

It appears Noland and Tagovailoa split their wagers 50/50 this season, as Noland was forced to wear Alabama gear at a press conference after Georgia lost to the Tide in the SEC Championship game in December.

Soak it in: Georgia football wins national championship

The Georgia Bulldogs are finally national champions! Kirby Smart, Stetson Bennett, and UGA prevailed in a win over the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Georgia Bulldogs are finally national champions! The years of heartbreak are in the rearview mirror for Bulldog nation.

Kirby Smart, Stetson Bennett, Nakobe Dean, and Georgia prevailed in a 33-18 victory over Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Georgia ended a seven-game losing streak against Alabama in a back-and-forth national championship win.

A low-scoring first half featured stout red zone defense and an unfortunate injury to star Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams. Alabama held a 9-6 halftime lead over Georgia.

Georgia overcame penalties, settling for field goals, and poor first-half offensive line play with their physical play and several clutch performances in the second half. Zamir White scored Georgia’s first touchdown late in the third quarter after a 67-yard James Cook run, which came one play after Jalen Carter blocked a 48-yard Alabama field goal attempt.

The Dawgs slowed down Heisman winning quarterback Bryce Young throughout the game. Young averaged only 6.5 yards per attempt in Alabama’s loss. UGA disrupted Young and forced him into a pair of second-half interceptions.

The game could’ve changed to the all-too-familiar story against Alabama when Stetson Bennett fumbled the ball deep in Georgia territory early in the fourth quarter. Several plays later Alabama scored a touchdown to go up 18-13. Things looked bleak for Georgia.

On the next drive, Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett had to prove his championship resilience. Bennett walked on to Georgia, transferred to Jones College, and then transferred back to UGA and won a national title against college football’s best dynasty of all time. You know the story. It is the sort of thing that Hollywood makes movies about and members of the media never stop talking about.

Bennett, who was crying tears of joy following Kelee Ringo’s interception return for a touchdown, hit Jermaine Burton for an 18-yard pass after his fumble. After an Alabama penalty and a completion, the Crimson Tide sacked Bennett for one of their five sacks on the day. Facing second-and-18, Stetson Bennett connected with Adonai Mitchell on a 40-yard touchdown pass. Georgia never looked back.

The Bulldogs forced an Alabama three-and-out. Georgia’s offensive line dominated Alabama as the Dawgs drove the ball into the red zone behind a spirited rushing attack. Later, Stetson Bennett connected with Brock Bowers to score another touchdown. UGA helped a 26-18 lead.

The Dawgs needed to stop Bryce Young and Alabama to win a national championship. Young and the Crimson Tide drove the ball near midfield before he threw a third-down interception to UGA’s Kelee Ringo. Ringo returned the pick to the house to seal Georgia’s 33-18 national championship win.

Several things stand out for the Dawgs.

Kirby Smart and the coaching staff deserve a lot of credit for switching up his offensive line. Smart subbed in Broderick Jones midway through the second quarter. Jones played well against Will Anderson and helped the Bulldogs run the football. Anderson is the best pass rusher in college football and has the most sacks in the country.

Stetson Bennett withstood nearly three touchdown-less quarters, five sacks, and a devastating late turnover to throw a pair of touchdown passes while winning a championship.

Georgia’s defense held up strong in the red zone. The Bulldogs had one extra red zone opportunity in the half thanks to Kelee Ringo’s effort. Alabama tight end Cameron Latu beat Kelee Ringo on an out route and raced towards the end zone. Ringo didn’t give up. He chased down Latu and UGA held the Crimson Tide to a field goal.
