Report: TCU’s Jameer Nelson Jr. had predraft workout with Thunder

Report: TCU’s Jameer Nelson Jr. had predraft workout with Thunder.

The calendar has flipped to June, which means NBA teams are intensifying their predraft process and hosting players for workouts and visits. The 2024 NBA draft will take place from June 26-27.

The Oklahoma City Thunder enter this year’s class with a sole draft pick of the No. 12 selection. OKC was gifted the free lottery pick via the Houston Rockets.

The Thunder will host several meetings with draft prospects in the coming weeks. This includes players outside the lottery range as OKC will likely seek to add undrafted free agents or even buy back into the second round if it likes someone enough.

One possibility is TCU’s Jameer Nelson Jr. He had a predraft workout with the Thunder on Sunday, per Rookie Wire. He’s the son of former NBA player Jameer Nelson.

The 22-year-old played in five college seasons from 2019-24. He spent his first two years at George Washington before going to Delaware for two campaigns. He concluded his collegiate career with a final year at TCU.

In 34 games last season, Nelson Jr. averaged 11.2 points on 43.4% shooting, 3.3 assists and 2.6 rebounds. He shot 30.6% from 3 on 3.2 attempts. At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, he’s a bit undersized as a guard.

Nelson Jr. is a potential undrafted free agent target. He has a shot to join the Thunder’s summer league squad and possibly be added to the G League’s OKC Blue for next season if he impresses enough.

A full list of 2024 NBA draft prospects that have worked out or visited the Thunder in the predraft process can be viewed here.

Vols’ football played only game in Washington, D.C. 90 years ago

Tennessee football played its only game in Washington, D.C. 90 years ago today.

Tennessee first fielded a football team in 1891 and the Vols have played in memorable games throughout its history.

The Vols have played in the nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., one time in its history.

90 years ago today, Tennessee played George Washington at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. The Vols were victorious, 13-0, in front of 25,000 in attendance.

Griffith Stadium opened on July 24, 1911 and was demolished on Jan. 26, 1965.

The Washington Senators in Major League Baseball played at Griffith Stadium (1911–1960) before relocating in becoming the Minnesota Twins. The second edition of the Washington Senators also played at Griffith Stadium in 1961 before moving to RFK Stadium from 1962-71. The second edition of the Senators relocated and became the Texas Rangers in 1972.

The Washington Redskins in the National Football League also played at Griffith Stadium from 1937-60.

Braeden Shrewsberry, Micah’s son, commits to Notre Dame

Gotta love family connections.

[autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] barely has his feet wet as Notre Dame coach, but he might just have obtained the easiest commit he will ever get in the job. [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag], his son, committed to playing for his dad in South Bend. He made it official Monday:

With Shrewsberry‘s prep career having just finished, he will join the Irish immediately. That will be a welcome sign to a program simply looking for bodies to fill the roster for the upcoming season. Yes, he’s another guard, and the Irish are looking for size in the worst way, but the priority right now is filling out the roster.

247Sports ranks Shrewsberry sixth among Pennsylvania recruits in the 2023 recruiting class. In two years as a varsity player, he averaged 18.4 points, 5 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game. Before his dad left Penn State, it appeared he was heading there, but no more. He also received offers from Xavier, St. Joseph’s and George Washington.

This game will feature a first for the Irish.

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day will feature games played throughout the day. Probably all of them will pay tribute to the civil rights leader who worked so hard to make life better for people of all races. One such game will include Notre Dame, which is taking a break from its ACC schedule to play a nationally televised matinee at Howard. This marks the first time the Irish have played a historically Black college or university on the road.

This season, the Irish have won almost every game in which the following has taken place:

  • The Irish have shot better than their opponent.
  • The Irish make at least 10 3-pointers.
  • An Irish player scores at least 20 points.
  • The margin of the final score is five points or less.

This game also will be a homecoming of sorts for Mike Brey. He played his senior season (1981-82) at George Washington, which is located only two miles from Howard.

Hot bats, solid pitching net sweep for Diamond Vols

2020 Tennessee baseball.

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee baseball team continued to flex its muscle against non-conference opponents over the weekend at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Volunteers, ranked No. 19 in the nation, improved their record to 12-0 with a series sweep against George Washington.

UT had to come from behind in each of the first two games against the Colonials (6-5), but the Diamond Vols, who won 7-1 on Friday and 7-3 on Saturday, wasted little time pouncing on George Washington Sunday as they captured a 10-0 win thanks to home runs from Luc Lipcius and Connor Pavolony.

Lipcius, who missed most of last season due to injury, also doubled and knocked in three runs and scored two more for the Vols, who have hit 22 home runs in the season’s first 12 games.

Pavolony went 2-for-3 for Tennessee and drove in three runs.

On the mound, Jordan Leath threw four innings of scoreless relief. He had six strikeouts and surrendered two hits.

Sean Hunley started and tossed two innings for the Vols. Tennessee also got scoreless one-inning stints from Elijah Pleasants, Drew Gilbert (who started in center field and scored two runs in the game) and Kody Davidson.
