First half highlights: Seahawks trail Broncos 13-9

First half highlights: Seahawks trail Broncos 13-9

It has been a bizarre and sloppy first half of football for both the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. Increasingly, Week 1 games across the league are becoming this way due to lack of starters playing in the preseason, and this seems to be the case at Lumen Field.

Through two quarters, the Seahawks trail the Broncos 13-9. Things did not start well for Seattle. On their first two plays, quarterback Geno Smith was sacked then threw an interception. Despite the horrendous field position they were put in, the Seahawks did not allow a first down and held Denver to a field goal. Both teams traded punts for several possessions, until the Seahawks managed to tie the game at 3-3 on their fourth drive of the game.

The first highlight of the year for the Seahawks defense came courtesy of Pro Bowl safety Julian Love, who intercepted rookie Bo Nix at the one yard line.

Unfortunately, the good vibes did not last long for Seattle, as they were flagged for holding on the first play following the interception. Since the foul occured in the end zone, it resulted in a safety to give Denver a 5-3 lead. The Broncos did not do much with it, and had to punt the ball away…

…which they quickly got back thanks to a muffed Seahawks punt, putting the Broncos back within Seattle’s goal line.

https://twitter.com/Broncos/status/1832888497012912461

Once more, the Seahawks defense held strong and did their best with the terrible field position. Seattle held Denver to only three points. On their next drive, the Seahawks finally found the end zone thanks to the legs of Geno Smith. The 34-yard run gave Seattle a 9-8 lead, but the ensuring 2-point conversion fell flat.

The two points the Seahawks did not get loomed large. Denver punted once more, pinning Seattle on their own 1-yard line… which resulted in yet another safety to give the Broncos a 10-9 lead. For the first time in my life, I have witnessed a game with two safeties, and I’m sure I’m not alone.

So there you have it, folks. The weirdest way to a 13-9 score any of us have seen in quite some time, or perhaps ever.

The Broncos will receive the ball to start the second half. As for the Seahawks, plenty of adjustments are needed if they want to avoid the Week 1 upset for the second-straight season.

Week 1 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs Broncos

Today is the day. The Seattle Seahawks are finally kicking off the 2024 season! They will host their former AFC West rivals, the Denver Broncos, for the first time since they were upset on Monday Night Football in 2022.

A lot has changed since then. Winding the clock back, that particular game featured the return of Russell Wilson to Seattle after being traded away from the Seahawks to the Broncos. The NFL scheduling wizards made sure it was front and center, and it did not disappoint. Seattle upset Wilson’s Broncos 17-16, and it was all downhill from there.

Denver suffered one of the worst seasons in recent memory in 2022, cratering to 5-12, prompting a drastic coaching change. The Broncos made another blockbuster trade to acquire the rights to hire Sean Payton from the New Orleans Saints to make him their next head coach. Things were marginally better for Denver in 2023, improving to 8-9, but saw the eventual benching of Russell Wilson.

Now, the Broncos are entering into a brand new era. Wilson is gone to Pittsburgh and in his place is rookie quarterback Bo Nix from Oregon. Payton’s now in his second year in full control of Denver, and has been remaking the team in his image. I full expect the Broncos to be far more competitive this year, and especially in Week 1.

Nix won’t be the only one having his debut at Lumen Field. Sunday will mark the first regular season game of Seahawks’ head coach Mike Macdonald’s career, as well as offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Macdonald was hired to help finally fix Seattle’s terrible defense – the team’s Achilles Heel for years now. The Seahawks and the 12th Man have good reason to be optimisitic about Macdonald’s prowess, as his unit in Baltimore for the past two seasons has been among the league’s best.

It’s Week 1, which is easily the most unpredictable weekend of the year. No one has film out on anyone, and that is doubly true for both teams today. How will Nix fare against Macdonald’s defense? Can Geno Smith and Grubb’s offense prove to be as crisp as they should be?

In my view, I see this being a competitive affair for the majority of the game. The Broncos are more improved, but I believe Grubb’s innovative offense is going to catch teams by surprise to start the year. Expect this one to stay tight, but a late touchdown by Seattle to put it away.

Prediction: Seahawks defeat Broncos 28-17 in a game that will be much closer than the final score might suggest.

Seahawks vs. Broncos: 5 things to know for Week 1

Happy Birthday to Byron Murphy II

Broncos CB Riley Moss hopes Seahawks test him in Week 1

Set to make his first NFL start, Broncos CB Riley Moss hopes Seattle tests him. “I hope it’s gonna happen, and I’m ready to make a play.”

The Denver Broncos used a third-round draft pick to select Iowa cornerback Riley Moss last year. After undergoing core muscle surgery in the offseason, Moss was mostly limited to special teams duties as a rookie, but he is now expected to start across from Pat Surtain in Year 2.

Moss will make his first career start against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday afternoon, and he expects quarterback Geno Smith to test him.

“Absolutely,” Moss said Friday when asked if he thinks the Seahawks will want to test a cornerback making his first NFL start. “I’ve had this my first start at Iowa. I went out there and I got three deep bombs like [on the] first drive, and I ended up with two picks that day. So, it’s a thing that you know it’s gonna happen, I hope it’s gonna happen, and I’m ready to make a play.”

https://twitter.com/MaseDenver/status/1831968297455149375

Moss, 24, is the only white starting cornerback in the NFL, a factoid that has led to teasing from even his own teammates. With Surtain expected to follow DK Metcalf on Sunday, Moss will likely be primarily matched up against Tyler Lockett or Jaxon Smith-Njigba, depending on the formation.

After playing just 23 snaps on defense last season, Moss is still seeking his first career pass breakup and first career interception. Expected to draw plenty of targets on Sunday, Moss will have ample opportunities to make plays on Sunday.

Ranking the 14 quarterbacks Broncos will face this season

Barring injures or benchings, the Broncos will face 14 starting quarterbacks in 2024. We rank the full list here.

Barring injuries or benchings, the Denver Broncos will face 14 different starting quarterbacks on their 2024 schedule, including home and away games against each quarterback in the AFC West.

The toughest quarterback on Denver’s schedule, of course, is Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. A two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion, Mahomes is the best QB in the league, period.

Up next on the list is Baltimore Ravens dual-threat Lamar Jackson, a fellow two-time NFL MVP with a 3-0 record against the Broncos.

Not far behind Mahomes and Jackson is Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow, who ranks high on Peyton Manning’s list of top NFL quarterbacks.

A promising up-and-coming threat is Justin Herbert (who also made Manning’s list), and veterans Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins always pose a threat to carve up a defense.

That’s the top six. Here’s the full list of quarterbacks Denver will face in 2024.

  1. Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)
  2. Lamar Jackson (Ravens)
  3. Joe Burrow (Bengals)
  4. Justin Herbert (Chargers)
  5. Aaron Rodgers (Jets)
  6. Kirk Cousins (Falcons)
  7. Anthony Richardson (Colts)
  8. Deshaun Watson (Browns)
  9. Geno Smith (Seahawks)
  10. Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers)
  11. Russell Wilson (Steelers)
  12. Derek Carr (Saints)
  13. Gardner Minshew (Raiders)
  14. Bryce Young (Panthers)

The action kicks off on Sunday when the Broncos go on the road to face Geno Smith and the Seattle Seahawks in a Week 1 showdown.

Geno Smith confirms he approached the Seahawks for a new contract

Geno Smith confirms he approached the Seahawks for a new contract

One of the more unexpected storylines emerging from the Seattle Seahawks during the preseason was a report about quarterback Geno Smith wanting a new contract. The Seahawks signed Smith to a three-year deal prior to the start of last season, which puts Smith squarely in year two for the 2024 campaign. Still, NFL insider Mike Garafolo broke the news in mid-August that Smith’s camp had reached out to the Seahawks regarding a new deal.

When asked about this report, Seahawks general manager John Schneider did not go into much detail, clearly not allowing the rumor to be a distraction. He essentially brushed off the question as simply being business as usual.

This attitude is clearly shared by the man who wants the new contract himself, Geno Smith. On Thursday, Smith confirmed to the media he and his team did reach out to the Seahawks about a new contract. However, Smith was equally as vague with the specific details.

Smith mentioned “I mean, that’s just normal business. Nothing wrong with that.”

It is understandable why Smith would be interested in another contract extension. Although he is signed through the 2025 season, there is no more guaranteed money left on the deal. On the flip side, it’s also understandable why Seattle isn’t racing to give Smith another contract. With no more guaranteed money left, and a young quarterback waiting in the wings in Sam Howell, it makes sense for the Seahawks to see how the 2024 season plays out.

Seahawks’ Geno Smith lands elite placement in latest QB rankings

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith believes he’s an elite signal caller. Smith proved capable of hanging with the best passers in the league during his breakout 2022 campaign. He ranked first in the league in completion percentage (69.8%, minimum 100 passing attempts), fourth in passing touchdowns (30), and eighth in yards (4,282) in his first season as the franchise’s starting QB.

Injuries and a disjointed offense limited Smith’s potential in 2023. It’s true that his passing yards and touchdown totals suffered from missing two regular-season contests, but it’s worth acknowledging his completion percentage also plummeted to 64.7%. The Seahawks made offseason changes to the offense, hiring Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator.

At least one major outlet sees Smith recapturing his 2022 magic this season. The Ringers’ Steven Ruiz recently released his annual QB rankings. Smith clocks in at No. 10 overall, ranking ahead of quarterbacks like CJ Stroud, Jordan Love, Tua Tagovailoa, and Brock Purdy.

https://twitter.com/ringernfl/status/1831413416801841613

“Geno Smith has developed into one of the most well-rounded quarterbacks in the NFL,” Steven Ruiz writes. “He doesn’t have the biggest arm in the league, but he might throw the prettiest ball. He can’t run away from defenders like Lamar Jackson or Kyler Murray, but he can make plays on the move. He steps up in the face of pressure rather than backing down. He makes quick, smart decisions but will also hold on to the ball for a beat longer when the situation calls for it.”

The Seahawks are expecting big things from Smith this season. He still possesses a fearsome trio of receivers in DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Hopefully the offensive line is improved through the acquisitions of George Fant and Connor Williams. Smith could thrive in Grubb’s new-look offense.

Geno Smith days from kickoff: Seahawks QB highlight reel!

Geno Smith days from kickoff: Seahawks QB highlight reel!

The Seattle Seahawks will begin their 2024 regular-season campaign in exactly seven days with a Week 1 home matchup versus the Denver Broncos at Lumen Field! Since Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith wears No. 7, we figured a highlight reel of Smith’s best throws qualified as an appropriate celebration!

Smith started 15 games for the Seahawks last season. He completed 64.7% of his passing attempts for 3,624 yards, 20 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. In two campaigns as Seattle’s unquestioned starter, Smith has thrown for 50 touchdowns and 7,906 yards.

This season, Smith will attempt to recapture the magic of his 2022 campaign. In his first year as the starter following Russell Wilson’s departure, Smith posted career highs in completion percentage (6.98%, minimum qualifiers), passing yards (4,282), and touchdowns (30). The former West Virginia standout has developed into a high-level starter for the Seahawks.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider continued investing resources in Smith as the team’s starting quarterback this offseason. New head coach Mike Macdonald hired Ryan Grubb as the new offensive coordinator. Grubb coached an explosive Washington Huskies offense in college football last season.

Schneider also attempted to improve the offensive line. Connor Williams was signed to play center, Christian Haynes was drafted in the third round to be an eventual solution at guard, and George Fant was signed as a veteran right tackle option while regular starter Abe Lucas continues rehabbing from an injury.

We’re Geno Smith days away from the kickoff and the Seahawks are ready to watch their starting QB have a career-best season!

Seahawks won’t allow Geno Smith’s contract to serve as a distraction this season

Seahawks won’t allow Geno Smith’s contract to serve as a distraction this season.

Seattle Seahawks starting quarterback Geno Smith is entering a critical season. Having signed a three-year extension with the team in 2023 following his breakout 2022 campaign, Smith now finds himself in the second of a three-year deal. Unsurprisingly, his representation thinks it’s time to negotiate a new agreement.

General manager John Schneider was recently asked to address a rumor that Smith’s camp approached Seattle’s front office to discuss a new contract. Schneider didn’t reveal much, though he did indicate he did not take their alleged approach very seriously, assuming an approach was made.

“Yeah, like broached a new contract? I think I’ll leave contract stuff aside,” Schneider responded. “There’s a lot of people that want contract extensions and I’m not going to get into specifics of who they are and all that. But that’s part of the job. It happens every year, all the time.”

“No,” Schneider responded to a follow-up question asking if the Seahawks discussed a new contract with Smith.

Smith is preparing to play his first season under new offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. In two campaigns as the unquestioned starting quarterback, Smith has thrown for 7,906 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions. His numbers could improve under Grubb, who is expected to field a pass-happier offense.

Smith is scheduled to earn a base salary of $12.7 million this season with that figure increasing to $14.8 million in 2025, according to OverTheCap. His slated cap charges are $26.4 million this year and $38.5 million in 2025. Releasing Smith next offseason would clear $25 million in cap while creating a manageable dead charge of $13.5 million.

Smith’s representation hopes he instead performs well enough to reignite extension discussions with Schneider next offseason.
