Head coach Fred Hoiberg believes Griffiths has the potential to thrive as a Cornhuskers.

He handles the ball well and possesses the length and athleticism to give us flexibility and positional size in our lineup. After finishing last season with a 21-14 record, the Friars are looking to build on their success. Part of that includes improving the offense, which is where Griffiths comes in. The Friars averaged 72.4 points a game last year while finishing sixth in the Big East. Adding a player with Griffiths’s potential could help their efficiency.

While Griffiths still is far from a finished product, he has been a popular name in the transfer portal. According to NJ Advanced Media’s Adam Zagoria, the list of schools that have shown interest in his services includes Boston College, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, Illinois, Xavier, Creighton, and Santa Clara.

Regardless of where Griffiths ends up, he will be highly motivated to make an immediate impact.

Reports: Gavin Griffiths is entering the transfer portal, to leave Rutgers basketball

Gavin Griffiths, a former four-star recruit, has left Rutgers basketball.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Gavin Griffiths has entered the transfer portal, marking the latest exit from the Rutgers basketball program.

At the time of his commitment in June of 2022, Griffiths was the highest-ranked recruit in program history. The former four-star averaged 5.8 points and 17.8 minutes per game. He shot 32.4 percent from the floor last year as a freshman.

In the Big Ten Tournament, in what will be his final game at Rutgers, Griffiths scored 16 points in a loss against Maryland.

Multiple reports on Thursday have Griffiths entering the portal. It is a significant loss for Rutgers basketball and head coach Steve Pikiell.

Griffiths was seen as a building block for the program, especially with the additions of five-star forward Ace Bailey and five-star guard Dylan Harper in the 2024 class.

In the class of 2023, Griffiths was the No. 50 recruit in the nation according to ESPN. He was the No. 12 forward overall.

Billed as a sharpshooter, Griffiths was one of the most talented players to emerge from Connecticut over the past decade.

Rutgers men’s basketball unable to recover from slow start in loss to Nebraska

Rutgers men’s basketball lost on Sunday at Nebraska.

A slow start doomed Rutgers in a 67-56 loss at Nebraska on Sunday evening.

With the loss, Rutgers basketball is now  15-14 (7-11 Big Ten). Their path to return to the NCAA Tournament is now increasingly narrow.

In the first half, Nebraska outscored Rutgers 37-25. They were led by Keisei Tominaga, who scored 18 points and added two offensive rebounds to his resume. He got some help from Juwan Gary, who scored 15 points. As Rutgers had no answer for the talented duo, Nebraska scored 22 points in the paint.

While Rutgers made things close in the second half, their early deficit proved too much to overcome. However, there were a few bright spots in Jeremiah Williams and Gavin Griffiths. Williams led the team in scoring with 14 points. Griffiths had his best game in weeks, adding 10 points to his resume.

Although Nebraska had success in the paint, that was not the only way they built a lead. The Cornhuskers also made the most of their opportunities from three-point range, shooting 33.3 percent.

With only two games left in the season, Rutgers will shift its focus to Wisconsin. They are set to take on the Badgers on March 7. That matchup will be a good test for a Rutgers team that has struggled on the road. They are 3-8 away from Jersey Mike’s Arena.

Jeremiah Williams to make Rutgers debut against Michigan

Jeremiah Williams will play for Rutgers at Michigan.

Rutgers men’s basketball will get a midseason boost on Saturday with the return of Jeremiah Williams. The Iowa State transfer is eligible to play after sitting out 20 games for violating the NCAA’s gambling policy. His return comes four games early, as his suspension was supposed to last until February 18.

In his college career, Williams has toured the country. He played two years for Temple, averaging 9.2 points and 4.2 assists per game. After his run with the Owls, Williams transferred to Iowa State for the 2022-2023 season. However, he never played for the Cyclones after damaging an Achilles tendon during a workout in October 2022.

According to Jerry Carino in his breaking story on Williams’ return:

The U.S. District Court of New Jersey on Friday granted an injunction to the 6-foot-5 combo guard so he can suit up at Michigan Saturday; the NCAA’s suspension was supposed to last four more games, which would have allowed Williams to begin playing Feb. 18 at Minnesota.

After months of anticipation, Rutgers backcourt should improve with Williams back in the mix. He is a good ball-handler and a solid rebounder. He still has two years of eligibility remaining.

While Williams should get playing time right away, it will be interesting to see how he is worked into the rotation. Head coach Steve Pikielll has relied on his young guards, such as Derek Simpson, Jamichael Davis and Gavin Griffiths this season.

Although Rutgers’ matchup with Michigan will mark his first game action, this will not be Williams’s first time playing with his teammates. He has been practicing with the team since July.

Rutgers men’s basketball closes out January with loss to Penn State

Rutgers men’s basketball lost a brutal one at home on Wednesday.

On Wednesday night, January came to an end for Rutgers men’s basketball in a disappointing fashion. The Scarlet Knights welcomed Penn State to Jersey Mike’s Arena but collapsed in the second half during a 61-46 loss.

After the first half ended with Penn State leading 26-24, the Nittany Lions took over. Ace Baldwin Jr. led the way offensively with 15 points and seven assists. D’Marco Dunn also made an impact with 14 points. It marked the second time in January that Dunn scored more than ten points.

While Rutgers struggled offensively, they did get some encouraging performances from their freshmen. That includes Gavin Griffiths and Jamichael Davis. Griffiths led the team in scoring with 11 points and Davis added 10 of his own. They were the only Rutgers players who scored double digits.

In this matchup, Penn State dominated the boards. They scored 28 points in the paint and hauled in 40 rebounds. As a result, Penn State put the game out of reach in the second half.

As Rutgers turns their attention to February, they will happily leave January in the rearview mirror. Over the last month, Rutgers posted a 2-6 record, losing their last three games. With only 11 games left in the regular season, they will need to turn things around quickly.

Who are the top five players for Rutgers basketball this season?

Rutgers basketball has had some ups and downs this season but still has a very solid foundation moving forward.

With the start of 2024 only weeks away, Rutgers fans are excited about what the new year will bring to college basketball. The Scarlet Knights are off to a 7-4 start and are 0-1 in conference play. While Rutgers currently sits towards the bottom of the Big Ten standings, January represents a chance for them to make up some ground.

As the Scarlet Knights have made the most of non-conference play, five players have stood out the most. That list includes Clifford Omoruyi, Aundre Hyatt, Gavin Griffiths, Noah Fernandes and Derek Simpson. The talented group has frustrated opponents with their offensive play and ability to take advantage of mistakes.

With Omoruyi and Hyatt averaging over ten points a game, Fernandes and Simpson have provided balancing scoring. In his freshman year, Griffiths has shown why he was a highly regarded recruit and has already carved out a role in the lineup.

Rutgers basketball: Gavin Griffiths shows his scoring touch in Jersey Mike’s debut

Freshman Gavin Griffiths had a strong Jersey Mike’s Arena debut for Rutgers basketball.

Gavin Griffiths certainly stepped up on Friday night, the Rutgers basketball forward certainly showing his potential in a 69-45 win over Boston University. It was the first home game for Griffiths, the highly-touted freshman.

A former four-star recruit, the freshman flashed and flashed again in showing his range and versatility on the offensive end.

In his first collegiate game on Monday night against Princeton, Griffiths got the start and scored four points (on 2-of-4 shooting) in 18 minutes. On Friday night, Griffiths led all Rutgers players with 25 points while shooting 60 percent in 27 minutes played.

It was a strong performance from Griffiths, who also had four rebounds and a block.

“Gavin is really, really good. It’s not easy in your freshman year, and I love the fact that his first game at Jersey Mike’s Arena was a win,” head coach Steve Pikiell told reporters after the game.

?He had two really great practices and he just got after it. Sometimes how you practice is how you play, and he really played well. Aundre [Hyatt] also had two really great practices and his voice and leadership was really heard. He rebounded and got us off to a really good start. He played really aggressively and he’s a good worker. The first game here was a great success.”

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday against Bryant.

[lawrence-related id=31950,31957]

Griffiths moved to the bench as Antwone Woolfolk moved into the starting lineup to give Rutgers some added size as they struggled to rebound in the season opener against Princeton.

Woolfolk (eight rebounds)( and center Cliff Omoruyi (five rebounds) controlled the paint in the win.

“That is the great part of our team.  Everyone has the ability to rebound.  We have good athletes and our guards need to stick their nose in there too and take care of the backboards,” Pikiell said.

“It isn’t just Cliff’s job or Wolf’s job.  Everyone put bodies on people tonight.  Noah dug out some long rebounds.  Austin (Williams) got 4 rebounds so everyone chipped in.  Gavin got 4 too to go along with his great 25 points.  It is a team thing and when we focus on that we get rebounds and we have been the last two days and we need to continue because Bryant can rebound too.”
