Deputies wrestle 11-foot alligator from Florida swimming pool

An 11-foot alligator tore through the screen of a Florida home early Tuesday to access a swimming pool, prompting a call to authorities.

An 11-foot alligator tore through the screen of a Florida home early Tuesday to access a swimming pool, prompting a call to authorities.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office shared photos via Facebook showing the 550-pound gator in the pool and being dealt with (carefully) by deputies after the reptile was removed from the water at the Deep Creek residence.

“Water Safety Month, Tip #37: Always check your pool before diving in!” The Sheriff’s Office advised.

The post continued: “A Deep Creek family was awakened by some loud noises on their lanai and came out to find this guy taking a dip in their pool. Coming in at 10’11” and weighing over 550 lbs., he tore through the screen to get to the nice, cool water.”

It was not immediately clear if the gator was relocated or euthanized.

Ex-Florida Gators football coach Dan Mullen joins Georgia high school program

Dan Mullen goes from head coach at Florida to a “contributing resource” for a Georgia high school football team whose head coach is a former Kirby Smart staffer. Love it.

On Sunday, Lake Oconee Academy in Greensboro, Georgia announced that former Florida Gators head football coach Dan Mullen will be joining the program for the 2022 season.

Mullen will join on “as a contributing resource to the football program and athletic department,” athletic director Chris Ingle told Lake Oconee News.

This comes after there was a report on Twitter stating that Mullen was hired as Lake Oconee Academy’s offensive coordinator. The school clarified that that was an incorrect report.

“It is unfortunate that reports of him being named the offensive coordinator surfaced without confirmation,” the school said in a press release. “While he would be tremendous at this position, he will not be active as the offensive coordinator at Lake Oconee Academy. We look forward to him being a member of our community and Titan family.”

The head coach at Lake Oconee Academy is Patrick Stewart. Stewart was a former defensive assistant under Kirby Smart at Georgia.

Florida fired Mullen in November after posting a 34-15 record in four seasons with the Gators. At the time of his firing, Florida was 5-6 on the 2021 season and had just lost an overtime game to the Missouri Tigers by a score of 24-23.

Per Lake Oconee News, Mullen has a vacation home in Reynolds-Lake Oconee and currently resides in Greensboro, Georgia.

Top Notre Dame recruiting target visiting SEC powerhouse this weekend

How do you feel about Notre Dame’s chances of landing it’s biggest offensive fish in 2023?

The young man hasn’t made a commitment to any college yet and doesn’t appear about to do so but that hasn’t stopped Notre Dame fans from envisioning what could come if five-star quarterback Dante Moore ends up wearing blue and gold.  Already a stellar recruiting class, a commitment from the King High School (Detroit) star would be huge in its own but would also likely boost the offensive side of the class for Notre Dame by drawing in more interested star talent.

Moore doesn’t appear near announcing a commitment very soon however and will be visiting the University of Florida this weekend.  The Gators join the list of recent visits from Moore that includes Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, and LSU in recent weeks.

Moore isn’t alone in being courted heavily by both Florida and Notre Dame as five-star defensive lineman Keon Keely, a current Fighting Irish commitment, recently visited the Gainesville campus.

Hopefully Moore has fun but not too good of a time down south this weekend.

What are Notre Dame’s odds in the Dante Moore derby?

Notre Dame is certainly in hot pursuit of five-star high school quarterback Dante Moore, but as you’d probably expect the Irish are anything but alone.  As Moore remains a priority and will shape offensive recruiting in 2023 for Notre Dame regardless of his ultimate decision, he’s taking visits to other big-time programs as well.

According to On3, Moore is set to visit Florida next month along with Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and UCF.

Moore is nearing 40 offers nationally as he’s one of the top prospects in the entire 2023 recruiting class, not just top quarterbacks.    If he eventually does choose Notre Dame, Moore would be the biggest quarterback recruit Notre Dame will have successfully recruited since Gunner Kiel a decade ago.

Star Notre Dame commitment set to visit SEC program

Will Notre Dame ultimately keep his commitment?

Notre Dame’s loaded 2023 recruiting class is certain to draw interest from other programs nationally.  If Marcus Freeman and company want to keep it among the top classes in all of college football this recruiting cycle they’ll have much work to do but with landing more commitments and in keeping their own commitments committed.

Perhaps the biggest prize in Notre Dame’s recruiting efforts this cycle has been defensive end Keon Keely.  Keely is the 16th ranked player nationally in the 2023 class and the top-rated edge rusher according to the 247Sports Composite.  It’s understandable that he’s is drawing significant attention nationwide.

We now know that he’ll soon be visiting the University of Florida and their new head coach Billy Napier.

From our colleagues at Gators Wire:

This will be Keely’s first opportunity to meet with the new UF staff in Gainesville. He was offered by Florida on April 16 and took two unofficial visits with the previous staff, first in June for a junior day event and again in September for the game against Alabama.

Keely remains committed to Notre Dame but like I said previously, keeping him in this class is going to require a ton of work by Freeman and his staff as the services of one of the best players in the entire nation is at stake.

Ex-Georgia CB Jalen Kimber transfers to UGA rival

Jalen Kimber joins the enemy.

Earlier this week, cornerback Jalen Kimber announced he would be transferring from Georgia and entering the NCAA transfer portal.

A few days later and Kimber has made it known that he will be transferring to the Florida Gators, Georgia’s biggest rival.

Kimber, a redshirt freshman, was Georgia’s projected starter at the position during the offseason but battled an injury that eventually required season-ending surgery.

Kimber came to Georgia as a four-star cornerback in the class of 2020. Running a 4.4 40-yard dash and has a 42-inch vertical jump, the athleticism is certainly there for an SEC cornerback.  Kimber enrolled early as a freshman.

The Mansfield, Texas, native played in three of Georgia’s games in 2020. He recorded one tackle.

LSU vs Florida Basketball: Behind enemy lines with Gators Wire

Five questions with our colleagues at Gators Wire.

The LSU Tigers men’s basketball team will be back on the hardwood come Wednesday night. They travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators in a cross-divisional matchup.

This past week the Tigers knocked off two teams ranked in the top 20 after their loss to Auburn. However, in their win over Tennessee, it came at a price. Missouri transfer guard Xavier Pinson went down with a knee injury. Early returns are good that he should miss minimal time but likely won’t suit up against the Gators.

As far as this matchup goes, as we try to check the pulse of the Florida basketball program. LSU Tigers Wire goes behind enemy lines as Tyler Nettuno of Gators Wire answered five questions about this game.

Gators’ offensive lineman transfers to Tennessee

Florida offensive lineman transfers to Tennessee.

First-year head coach Josh Heupel and his Tennessee staff continue to recruit future Vols.

Florida offensive lineman Gerald Mincey has announced he is transferring from the Gators to Tennessee.

“1,000 percent committed to the University of Tennessee,” Mincey said.

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound redshirt freshman is from Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Mincey appeared in nine game for Florida in 2021. He played in one game during the 2020 campaign.

Tennessee visits Florida wide receiver decommit ahead of the early signing period.

First-year head coach Josh Heupel and his Tennessee staff continue to recruit future Vols.

Heupel and the Vols’ staff have been visiting commits and prospects on the recruiting trail, as well as having players visit on campus.

On Wednesday, Tennessee wide receivers coach Kodi Burns visited 2022 prospect Chandler Smith.

“Another great in home visit with Kodi Burns,” Smith said on Twitter.

The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver is from Mt. Dora High School in Orlando, Florida. Smith decommitted from Florida on Dec. 7.

The football early signing period takes place Dec. 15-17 for the 2022 recruiting class.
