UNC signee Laila Hull named Gatorade Indiana Girls basketball player of the year

North Carolina women’s basketball signee Laila Hull was named Gatorade Indiana Girls basketball player of the year.

The momentum of the North Carolina women’s basketball program has been building over the years, with top recruits choosing UNC as their home.

As the Tar Heels prepare to compete for an NCAA title, their signee Laila Hull was named the Gatorade Indiana Girls basketball player of the year.

Hull joins other North Carolina signee Reniya Kelly as their state representative for the women’s high school Gatorade player of the year—two players who bring great shooting to an already high-scoring UNC offense.

Hull led Zionsville high school to a 20-3 record, eventually making it to the Class 4A sectional semifinals. The four-star recruit averaged 22.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists a game. In addition, the 6’1 small forward was a nightmare for opposing offenses, averaging 2.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game.

It is hard not to get excited about the team building at UNC.

The three contenders for the honor are as follows:

Sierra Canyon (Calif.) G Judea “Juju” Watkins

The No. 1 ranked girls hoops player in the nation, Watkins has helped lead her team to a 31-0 record this season and is averaging just under 30 points per game. She was named the Maxpreps National Player of the Year last year. Watkins has committed to playing her college ball at USC.

Sidwell Friends (D.C.) G Jadyn Donovan

Last season Donovan also led her team to an undefeated record (30-0), while averaging 15.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.3 steals per game, according to MaxPreps. Donovan is ranked third overall in the recruiting class of 2023 and has committed to Duke.

During that time her team went 61-9. Hidalgo has committed to playing for Notre Dame at the next level.

The biggest Super Bowl 57 upset? A Purple Gatorade bath

Who had purple!?

Congrats to everyone who bet on Purple for the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs had the pleasure of dousing head coach Andy Reid in the sports drink after capping off a wild 38-35 victory to claim Super Bowl 57.

Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson tried to give bettors the inside scoop this week before the game, but without Philadelphia pulling off the win it was all for naught.

Purple closed at +1000 at BetMGM with Yellow/Green serving as the favorite (+120). Purple had the third-longest odds ahead of only Clear/Water (+1100) and “no gatorade poured” at (+2500).

We can at least be thankful that last one wasn’t the true outcome.

Eagles lineman Lane Johnson revealed which color Gatorade his team always drinks (and sportsbooks were quick to react)

Lane Johnson, gambling legend.

If the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl for the second time since 2018, offensive lineman Lane Johnson may never have to pay for a meal in that city again.

He might not have to buy another drink in Las Vegas, either. Not after he gave bettors the ultimate edge on one of the most popular prop bets ahead of Super Bowl 57 on Sunday.

As bettors were going back-and-forth over which color gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach, Johnson provided the insight everyone was looking for, per Action Network’s Darren Rovell:

While Johnson’s insight is only useful if the Eagles win, it’s worth noting that the Chiefs dumped yellow and orange Gatorade on head coach Andy Reid when they won the Super Bowl in 2020.

There are very few locks on Super Bowl Sunday, but this appears to be one of them…but no one would be blamed for hedging with “No Gatorade Poured” at +2000.

Stanford commit Irene Riggs named Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year

After winning the Nike nationals and inserting her name into the record book with the second-fastest 5K time for a prep girl, Irene Riggs has been named the Gatorade National Girls XC Player of the Year.

After being named the Gatorade West Virginia Cross Country Player of the Year as a sophomore and junior, Irene Riggs capped her high school career not just with the state distinction but that of the country.

On Wednesday, Riggs was named the Gatorade National Girls Cross Country Player of the Year.

The Morgantown High School (W.V.) senior dominated the track this season, winning the Nike Cross Nationals championship with a time of 16:40.9, which was the second-fastest time run at Glendoveer Golf Course. She also won an individual Group 3A championship and helped her team win the state title.

She etched her name into the record books at the Team Southeast Regional in November, recording the second-fastest 5K time in girls cross country history with a time of 16:02.1. To further put that time in perspective, only five times had a girls cross country runner reached even 16:20.0 in a 5K, according to MileSplit. Riggs’ time was 20 seconds faster than the WakeMed record, which was previously held by three-time Gatorade National Player of the Year Katelyn Tuohy.

Gatorade also takes education and community service into account when deciding the award. Riggs, the student body vice president, had a 4.22 unweighted GPA, according to Gatorade. She also has served as the social media coordinator for Mohigan Idol, a talent competition that raises money for WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital.

Riggs is committed to Stanford, where she will run for the Cardinal.

Incoming Penn State LB Tony Rojas named Virginia’s Gatorade player of the year

Penn State Class of 2023 LB Tony Rojas named Gatorade player of the year in Virginia

Penn State freshman running back Nick Singleton came to the program as the national Gatorade high school player of the year. While one of Penn State’s incoming stars in the Class of 2023 may not achieve quite that high an accolade, [autotag]Tony Rojas[/autotag] is coming with some national recognition from Gatorade.

Rojas was named the Gatorade player of the year in football for the state of Virginia. Playing both running back and linebacker, Rojas had an impact on both sides of the football for Fairfax this past season. Rojas rushed for 2,240 yards and 38 touchdowns on offense and recorded 72.5 tackles on defense.

As the Gatorade player of the year in Virginia, Rojas is now eligible to be named the Gatorade national high school player of the year. Could Penn State potentially go back-to-back in signing the Gatorade national player of the year? After pulling off the feat for the first time a year ago, that would be quite the accomplishment on the recruiting trail.

Rojas will play on defense for Penn State, as he was recruited to play linebacker with the running back position pretty well situated with Singleton and Kaytron Allen in the backfield after stellar freshman seasons.

Oklahoma QB signee Jackson Arnold wins Texas Gatorade Player of the Year Award

Oklahoma Sooners QB Jackson Arnold named Texas Gatorade Player of the Year and is a finalist for Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Former Denton Guyer Wildcat and future Oklahoma Sooner quarterback Jackson Arnold’s efforts in his final high school season have been rewarded. Arnold has been named the Texas Gatorade Player of the Year.

During this regular season, Arnold completed 69% of his passes and totaled 4,400 yards and 57 total touchdowns during his senior year. He also added Arnold also took very good care of the football, with only three interceptions on the season.

While being named the best football player in the state of Texas is a phenomenal accomplishment for the young QB, Arnold is still on the shortlist for the Gatorade National Player of the Year Award as one of three finalists.

Former winners are a who’s who of college and NFL players. Clemson’s Cade Klubnik won it in 2021, and Ohio State’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba won it in 2019. Other notable winners of the award include Spencer Sanders, [autotag]Kyler Murray[/autotag] (twice), Matthew Stafford, and Cedric Benson.

The other two are very familiar faces: Texas signee [autotag]Arch Manning[/autotag] and USC signee and former OU commit [autotag]Malachi Nelson[/autotag].

Arnold’s Denton Guyer did fall in the state semifinals, but the numbers he had against the competition he played against is hard to argue with. Being a finalist alongside future Red River rival Arch Manning and USC’s Malachi Nelson just feels like how it was meant to be.

Even if Arnold doesn’t win the national award, being selected as the best player in the state of Texas across multiple publications is quite an accomplishment. Arnold’s time at the helm may not come until 2024, but he’s already got excitement building for his debut.

WATCH: Texans DE Jerry Hughes kicks over Gatorade tub against the Dolphins

Houston Texans defensive end was frustrated after the Miami Dolphins’ first touchdown and kicked over a Gatorade tub on the sideline.

2022 has been a frustrating year for the Houston Texans.

Maybe not so much for Jerry Hughes, who has 8.0 sacks playing for his hometown team. However, the agony of being on a 1-8-1 team that continuously plays patsy to opponents has to be frustrating.

After the Dolphins scored their first touchdown of the game wherein quarterback Tua Tagovailoa threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to tight end Durham Smythe on a scramble drill with 3:06 to go in the first quarter, Hughes was filmed by CBS Sports on the sidelines expressing his displeasure. The 34-year-old kicked off a Gatorade tub in between shouts of anger.

Hughes’ frustration is understandable for every Texans fan who expected the team to at least be better than the 2021 incarnation. However, the Texans appear stuck in a rebuild.

Buccaneers’ Vita Vea shotgunned a can of Gatorade the same way he tosses around offensive linemen

Vea cast his little can aside like it was a Pro Bowl center.

Football players like the Buccaneers’ Vita Vea are used to imposing their will. Sometimes, they’re not trying to be imposing. They just simply don’t know their own strength. This is often the case for Vea, who makes a living out of seemingly humiliating centers and guards as if he’s barely making an effort.

As Tampa Bay rolls through training camp in pursuit of a second Super Bowl title in three seasons, Vea was understandably a little thirsty in the intense Florida heat. So, the big man decided to get some Gatorade to cool off. Whoops, sorry, that’s inaccurate.

In only a manner befitting of Vea — a Football Guy — he decided to shotgun a can of the popular sports drink:

“I don’t drink beer.”

Well, for someone who doesn’t drink cold ones, Vea certainly seems to have that talent down pat! Color us impressed.

Vea will need all the refreshments he can get in the coming months. Per oddsmakers with Tipico Sportsbook, the Buccaneers have +700 odds (second-best) to win Super Bowl 57. The first-time Pro Bowler from last season will undoubtedly play a massive (pun intended) role in that hopeful journey to another championship.

Trevor Lawrence discusses community work, OTAs, and more with Jags Wire

Before the Jacksonville Jaguars even drafted him, it was clear that Trevor Lawrence wanted to do his part to help the community. Just last year prior to the NFL Draft, Lawrence and his wife, Marissa, donated $20,000 to various charities around Jacksonville after fans raised more than $30,000 in Lawrence’s name in charitable giving. With his first year as an NFL quarterback in the books, Lawrence has partnered with one of his sponsors, Gatorade, for more community outreach.

With the Jags on their pre-camp break, the Jaguars Wire sat down with Lawrence for a Q&A session to learn more about his partnership with Gatorade, his latest community work with the T.R.U.E. Youth organization of Jacksonville and how he’s feeling heading into the 2022 regular season after an offseason full of changes.

Read on to hear what the second-year quarterback had to say.
