Bengals add running back in free agency to practice squad

The Bengals add to the roster via free agency.

The Cincinnati Bengals are adding help at running back in the form of free agent Gary Brightwell.

The report comes from Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz after news that the team would host veteran running back Leonard Fournette for a workout on Monday.

A sixth-round pick in 2021, Brightwell recently spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns over the last few months. He’s scored one touchdown on 41 career attempts.

The Bengals went and got help at running back with the rare trade deadline deal, but Khalil Herbert fumbled upon arrival and starter Chase Brown fumbled during last week’s loss, too.

With Zack Moss also out for the season, the Bengals have decided to add more help.

Browns clear a one peculiar roster spot at a key position

Is the return of their superstar closer than thought!?

The Cleveland Browns opened the 21-day practice window for running back Nick Chubb this week, and now peculiarly have waived running back Gary Brightwell.

Brightwell was added to the 53-man roster off of the practice squad after Pierre Strong Jr. hurt his hamstring in practice to give the Browns a third body behind Jerome Ford and D’Onta Foreman. This move could have been made because Strong is now healthy enough to play again and the Browns can use that 53rd roster spot somewhere else on the roster.

It could also mean, however, that the Browns may activate Chubb off of the Physically Unable to Perform list sooner in that 21-day window than anticipated.

The Browns enter their Week 5 matchup against the Washington Commanders in desperate need of a win after dropping two in a row. This week is virtually a must-win for the Browns, so there may be a sense of urgency from the team and running back to get back on the field and give Cleveland a massive, massive boost.

Look out for a corresponding move one way or the other.

Giants place TE Darren Waller on reserve/retired list

The New York Giants have placed TE Darren Waller on the reserve/retired list and released RB Gary Brightwell off of injured reserve.

The New York Giants placed tight end Darren Waller on the reserve/retired list Monday evening, making his NFL retirement official.

Waller informed the team that he’d be stepping away from the game over the weekend.

“The passion has slowly been fading. I’ve, you know, made the decision that I’ll be retiring from the NFL,” Waller said in a YouTube video. “Eternally grateful for the game of football. I wouldn’t be able to have this conversation or to think things through or be self-reflective if it wasn’t for an opportunity to save my life and go to rehab, which the NFL offered me.”

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll put no pressure on Waller to make a decision but it was inevitable that one would be made ahead of this week’s mandatory minicamp.

“We have great respect for Darren as a person and player. We wish him nothing but the best,” the Giants said in a statement.

Waller’s retirement frees up approximately $11.6 million in cap space for the Giants as he was scheduled to make $10.5 million with a $14.1 million cap number. The move will now only cost the Giants $2.5 million in dead cap money this season (and $4.9 million in dead cap next season).

In addition to making Waller’s retirement official, the Giants also released running back Gary Brightwell off of injured reserve (IR) with an injury settlement.

Giants sign DB Elijah Riley, waive RB Gary Brightwell

The New York Giants have signed defensive back Elijah Riley and waived running back Gary Brightwell with an injury designation.

The New York Giants made a minor transaction on Thursday, signing defensive back Elijah Riley and waiving running back Gary Brightwell with an injury designation.

The 25-year-old Riley originally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent out of Army in 2020. After being moved to their practice squad in 2021, he was signed by the New York Jets to their active roster.

From 2022 through 2023, Riley played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In 30 career games (seven starts), Riley has recorded 62 tackles (31 solo, five for a loss), one pass defensed, two QB hits and 2.0 sacks.

Throughout his four-year career, the 6-foot, 205-pound Riley has taken 460 defensive snaps and 316 special teams snaps. He earned an overall Pro Football Focus grade of 79.8 last season (84.5 in coverage).

Riley is a Port Jefferson native.

Brightwell, a sixth-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, appeared in 37 games for the Giants as both a running back and kick returner.

If Brightwell clears waivers (injury undisclosed), he will revert to injured reserve (IR) within 24 hours. He will then be eligible for an injury settlement.

Giants get ugly marks in 2021 NFL draft re-grade

After receiving positive grades initially, the New York Giants earned very low marks in a 2021 NFL draft re-grade.

The New York Giants’ 2021 draft class — the last one selected by former general manager Dave Gettleman — drew positive grades from critics in the days and weeks afterward.

Three years later, it’s not looking so good. The Giants made six selections. Only three of those players are still with them and none have made — or are making — significant impacts.

CBS Sports draft analyst Pete Prisco gave the Giants a B+ grade after the draft. In a recent re-draft, however, he lowered that grade to a D, and deservedly so.

They had six picks in the draft, including three in the first 71, and not one will go into the 2024 season as a starter. They whiffed on first-round receiver Kadarius Toney, who was traded to the Chiefs after just 30 catches for the Giants in five starts over two seasons. Second-round pass rusher Azeez Ojulari has 25 starts in three seasons with 16 sacks, but he will be a rotational player with Brian Burns coming over in a trade. The other backups on the roster are third-round corner Aaron Robinson and sixth-round running back Gary Brightwell. Robinson has played 11 games — none last season — as injuries have limited him.

Giant fans will recall the first-round trade between their two rivals — Dallas and Philadelphia that edged them out of their top target, Alabama wide receiver Devonta Smith.

Dallas held the 10th pick, the Giants the 11th, and Eagles the 12th. Dallas and Philly swapped picks, allowing the Eagles to poach Smith away from the Giants. Gettleman then traded back to No. 20 with Chicago, who took quarterback Justin Fields. Dallas immediately snatched up Linebacker Micah Parsons.

Gettleman chose Toney at No. 20 and then traded back in Round 2 from No. 42 to No. 50, grabbing more picks while still landing Ojulari. In the third round, the Giants moved up from 76 to 71 and selected Robinson.

Two of the three other picks in that draft — linebacker Elerson Smith and cornerback Rodarius Williams — are no longer with the team and running back Gary Brightwell is in the final year of his contract.

More from Prisco:

I loved the pick of Ojulari, who I said could be a major steal. He hasn’t been that, but he’s been solid. I did question taking Robinson in the third, but medicals make that a tough evaluation now. I said I liked the way the Giants moved down and took Toney and still got a first the next year. That pick is starting right tackle Evan Neal, taken seventh overall. He hasn’t played up to expectations, but injuries have hurt his growth.

Let’s not forget the other players the Giants would take with the picks Gettleman got in those draft day deals. New general manager Joe Schoen selected cornerback Cor’Dale Flott and tight end Daniel Bellinger. He had also traded a fifth-round pick from the draft for defense lineman Leonard Williams.

Giants’ Evan Neal, Rakeem Nunez-Roches out vs. Eagles

The New York Giants have ruled OL Evan Neal and DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches out against the Eagles, listing four others as questionable.

The New York Giants closed out their practice slate on Saturday afternoon, wrapping up their third session in four days.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence, who is nursing a hamstring injury, returned to the field and told reporters he intends to play on Monday afternoon against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Head coach Brian Daboll expressed similar optimism for veteran defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

Full injury reports for both the Giants and Eagles can be found below:

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence continues to miss practice

New York Giants NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring) was a projected non-participant in practice on Friday and was joined by three others.

The New York Giants enjoyed an off day on Friday with their final practice scheduled for Saturday ahead of a Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With most players away from team facilities, that meant little change in terms of injury status. However, the Giants still moved forward with a projected injury report.

Nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was a projected non-participant due to a hamstring issue that has plagued him for several weeks.

“He’s still working through his hamstring,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters this week.

Even with an extra day off this week, Sexy Dexy seems unlikely to suit up on Monday afternoon against the Eagles.

The Giants’ full (projected) Friday injury report can be found below:

Did not participate: NT Dexter Lawrence (hamstring), DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (knee), OL Evan Neal (ankle), TE Lawrence Cager (groin)

Limited participant: DT A’Shawn Robinson (back), RB Matt Breida (hamstring), LB Carter Coughlin (neck), P Jamie Gillan (groin), S Xavier McKinney (illness)

Full participant: OL Justin Pugh (calf/neck), TE Darren Waller (hamstring), RB Gary Brightwell (hamstring), OL Matt Peart (shoulder)

Giants injury report: Dexter Lawrence, Xavier McKinney not practicing

The New York Giants have released their official Thursday injury report.

The New York Giants were back on the practice field Thursday ahead of a scheduled day off and were down a starter.

Kicker Randy Bullock has been placed on season-ending injured reserve (IR) with a hamstring issue. He will be replaced by fellow kicker Cade York, who is currently on the practice squad, for the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, all eyes were on the Giants’ trio of defensive tackles — Dexter Lawrence, A’Shawn Robinson, and Rakeem Nunez-Roches, all of whom are banged up.

Lawrence and Nunez-Roches continued to sit out while Robinson was limited.

The Giants’ full Thursday injury report can be found below:

Giants injury report: Gary Brightwell, Matt Peart designated to return

The New York Giants have designated RB Gary Brightwell and OL Matt Peart to return from injured reserve (IR).

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday ahead of their Christmas Day game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field.

Their first order of business was designating running back Gary Brightwell and offensive lineman Matt Peart to return from injured reserve (IR). Both will likely be able to suit up in Week 16 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“We’ll open the window for Brightwell, open the window for Peart. Both those guys,” head coach Brian Daboll said.

Meanwhile, nose tackle Dexter Lawrence missed practice as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury. He was joined by kicker Randy Bullock, who suffered a similar injury in Sunday’s 24-6 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Daboll is less than optimistic that Bullock will play on Monday, suggesting that Cade York will be elevated from the practice squad.

“He’s not great. Yeah, he’s not great, so that’s something we’ll work through here and see where he is. But I’m not expecting him to be ready,” he said of Bullock.

The Giants did not release a projected injury report with an extra day available on Saturday.

Giants waive RB Deon Jackson, OL Joshua Miles

The New York Giants have waived RB Deon Jackson and OL Joshua Miles with three players eligible to return from IR this week.

On Monday, the New York Giants waived running back Deon Jackson and offensive lineman Joshua Miles, leaving them with 51 players on the 53-man roster.

Jackson appeared in one game for the Giants after being claimed off waivers from the Cleveland Browns on October 24. He gained two yards on a single carry in Week 9.

Miles was signed off of the Atlanta Falcons practice squad on October 17 but was inactive for each game he was with the team.

Running backs Gary Brightwell and Eric Gray and offensive lineman Matt Peart are all eligible to return from injured reserve (IR) this week and it’s likely those two open roster spots will be filled by a pair of the three.

Meanwhile, kicker Randy Bullock and tight end Tyree Jackson have reverted back to the practice squad.

With no more elevations left for Bullock, the Giants will have to make a decision at kicker. Cade York remains on the active roster for the time being.
