Jets at Patriots: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 8

Jets at Patriots: 3 key matchups to watch in Week 7

The New York Jets will face the New England Patriots in their upcoming Week 7 matchup.

Even with it being an AFC East clash, it will still be the games, within the game, that will make all the difference.

Here are three key matchups to watch during Jets (2-5) versus the Patriots (1-6):

WR Garrett Wilson vs. CB Christian Gonzalez

(Imagn)

Most eyes will be on Davante Adams when the Jets offense is on the field, as expected. He could very well win his matchup against Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones, but Jones is likely the Pats’ best player in the secondary. That will leave Gonzalez on Wilson which is a matchup the Jets should take advantage of.

LB CJ Mosley vs. RB Rhamondre Stevenson

With rookie Drake Maye now starting at quarterback for the Patriots, stopping Stevenson out of the backfield will be even more important than the first time these two sides met. Make Maybe beat you and Mosley will be the one leading the Jets defense against New England’s backfield.

DE Haason Reddick vs. OL Demontrey Jacobs

(USAT)

Reddick just ended his holdout and his debut will be a huge chance to make a splash in his first game with the Jets. He’s going up against Jacobs, who is the worst-rated offensive tackle in the entire NFL via Pro Football Focus‘ metrics.

Sauce Gardner and the Jets’ defense is suffering Jet lag and here’s why

Sauce Gardner and the Jets’ defense is suffering Jet lag and here’s why

Injuries, fatigue, trauma, and locker room unrest all have worked to depreciate the New York Jets defense led by All-Pro Sauce Gardner.

After building rapport under Jeff Ulbrich as the former defensive coordinator in 2022, Gardner and company were forced to compromise Ulbrich’s leadership due to his transition over to interim head coach just weeks ago.

Countless Jets players suffered injuries on defense this season including defensive end Jermaine Johnson, defensive back D.J Reed, safety Chuck Clark, and linebacker C.J Mosley who missed three of the Jets’ seven games this season.

Gardner hasn’t missed any games this season however, and him and all-pro linebacker Quincy Williams have done everything in their power to maintain Ulbrich’s standard. Thanks to Gardner and others, the Jets still rank No. 2 in the NFL in opponent pass yards allowed per game and rank No. 16 in opponent rush yards per game.

It doesn’t end there. What about the excessive offensive turnovers yielded by quarterback Aaron Rodgers? Those Jets’ turnovers have a trickle-down effect, playing against both the attrition and morale of the team defense. Since Gardner’s youth doesn’t merit him the vocal platform to scorn a teammate of Rodgers’ magnitude, he and others have been forced to suffer in silence internally.

Whether Gardner, Ulbrich , or Jets fans admit it or not, Rodgers’ inflated ego has fully consumed the Jets’ locker room. With a offensive third-down conversion rate of 31% over the last three games, Gardner and the defense haven’t really gotten much from their hall of fame quarterback, one they believed would take them to the next level.

Offensive struggles have only perpetuated a undertone of pessimism and if the Jets’ defense doesn’t get a tangible (not vocal) contribution from Rodgers in week 8, their jet lag may continue.

Jets’ Garrett Wilson blunt after Steelers loss: ‘I’m playing like [expletive] right now’

Jets’ Garrett Wilson blunt after Steelers loss: ‘I’m playing like [expletive] right now’

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson was very blunt following his team’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Wilson played a big role in the 37-15 loss and not in a positive way.

The Steelers notched an interception thanks to a drop from Wilson. A pass deflected off of him and ended up turning into six points for Pittsburgh.

Because of that, Wilson said the loss was on him.

“I’ve got to catch the damn ball. I’m playing like s— right now,” Wilson said. “I feel like that’s the reason we lost the damn game.”

New York trailed 16-15 when Wilson missed that ball. One play later after a long return from Steelers cornerback Beanie Bishop Jr., Pittsburgh put away another touchdown.

In a supportive manner, despite the play, quarterback Aaron Rodgers said he backed Wilson right after the mishap.

“I said I’m going to come back to you. He’s a dynamic player, we need to target him,” Rodgers said via video conference. “Obviously no one feels sicker than him about that play but he’s a dynamic player.”

Wilson ended up finishing the contest with five catches for 61 yards. That was overshadowed by the interception in the second half.

Steelers vs. Jets: Aaron Rodgers must win the time of possession battle

New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers will need to overwhelm the Pittsburgh Steelers pass defense and keep Najee Harris on the sideline in Week 7.

Delegating touches has been an area of interest for quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the New York Jets’ offense.

Rodgers will be looking to get the ball to newly acquired wide receiver Davante Adams, as well as keep wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and running back Breece Hall involved on Sunday night.

The question is; will the Jets have enough time of possession to get the ball distributed on offense?

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is going to start Russell Wilson at quarterback and look to keep the ball away from the Jets offense. Steelers running back Najee Harris will be asked carry the offense so that fatigue sets in on the Jets’ defense.

While, Adams is a huge upgrade from Mike Williams, it won’t matter who the Jets have on offense if their defense can’t get off the field.

The Jets’ offense must therefore capture and maintain the lead early to neutralize the Steelers plan.

Total first downs are a stat to look for in this game and will be directly tied to the winner of time of possession.

Davante Adams, Garrett Wilson both excited to play on Jets together

Davante Adams, Garrett Wilson both excited to play on Jets together

What does the addition of Davante Adams to the Jets offense mean for Garrett Wilson?

In a word, excitement.

Adams, traded to the Jets (2-4) from the Raiders this week, revealed that more than a year ago him and Wilson talked about such a scenario.

“We talked about this a little over a year ago, about how we wish we could play together,” Adams said. “Here we are now.”

Adams might be replacing Wilson as the Jets’ No. 1 receiver for the time being, but Wilson does not sound like that bothers him all that much at all.

Wilson admitted to ESPN that Adams was “one of his favorite players” growing up.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to learn a lot. Hopefully, we can get this thing rolling and start winning games,” Wilson said.

Adams and Wilson’s first appearance together will take place on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 7 against the Steelers (4-2).

Jets QB Aaron Rodgers hits WR Garrett Wilson for go-ahead TD vs. Bills

Check out this touchdown pass from #Jets QB Aaron Rodgers to WR Garrett Wilson that gave New York an early lead over the #Bills.

The New York Jets got out to an early lead over the Buffalo Bills in Week 6 when quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit star wide receiver Garrett Wilson for a touchdown in the second quarter of Monday night’s contest.

Though Buffalo would ultimately regain the lead before halftime, the play was an excellent demonstration of the Jets’ offensive potential with Rodgers under center.

New York desperately needs a win against the Bills to keep its season on track after the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh last week.

Watch take a look at Wilson’s dramatic grab in this video that was shared to Twitter by the NFL’s official account:

After a high-scoring first half, viewers should expect Rodgers to continue putting on a show as he attempts to out-duel Josh Allen to earn New York a share of the top spot in the AFC East heading into the middle part of the regular season.

The Jets have come out of the gate hot in the Jeff Ulbrich era and Garrett Wilson has benefited.

After a field goal on their first drive of the game to take a 3-0, the Jets went down 7-3 as the Bills responded with a score of their own.

But not so fast said Wilson and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

On a third down in the red zone, Rodgers connected with Wilson for a touchdown. It was not easy.

Wilson toe-tapped the back of the end zone for the score. It was initially called out of bounds, however, it was so clearly in bounds that the NFL did not even let the Jets use a timeout. They overruled it from the league’s HQ.

The Jets hold a 10-7 lead in the first quarter thanks to the score.

Wilson’s score can be found in the clip below:

Jets’ Aaron Rodgers, Garrett Wilson would welcome Davante Adams trade

Jets’ Aaron Rodgers, Garrett Wilson would welcome Davante Adams trade

The New York Jets have finally had a chance to chat about Davante Adams after finally touching down in London.

The Jets (2-2) will suit up against the Minnesota Vikings (4-0) across the pond in Week 5. Players finally chatted to the media and some of the team’s top talents on offense have now discussed the trade speculation.

Adams, 31, wants to be traded by his current team the Las Vegas Raiders. New York was quickly connected as Adams reportedly wants to play with one of his two former QBs he’s had in the NFL.

Speaking of that, Aaron Rodgers is one of them. Rodgers’ thoughts on Adams eventually wearing the green and white were not all that surprising.

He’s into the idea.

“I don’t know how much I can say about it because of tampering, but I still have a close friendship with him. Spend time in the offseason together,” Rodgers said via video conference.” Great guy, a great player, the rest of that is out of my hands.”

A more interesting commentary is the one of Garrett Wilson. He is currently the Jets’ No. 1 receiver and if Adams ends up in New York, Wilson would no longer be.

Even so, Wilson is fine with that.

“That would be cool,” Wilson said “If someone can help us win, let’s do it.”

A humbled response from Wilson.

Jets, Garrett Wilson downplay comments that created a stir

Jets, Garrett Wilson downplay comments that created a stir

Both the New York Jets (2-2) and Garrett Wilson have both downplayed his comments from earlier this week that created a stir.

Ahead of facing the Minnesota Vikings (4-0) in London and in the midst of Davante Adams trade speculation, Wilson turned some heads with this one.

“I don’t think we do a lot of different stuff to be honest,” Wilson said to ESPN radio.”When I watch football on Sundays and I see a lot of teams who mix it up and stuff like that. I don’t feel like we do that. I think we know our identity.”

Some took that as controversial. Jets offensive coordinator Nate Hackett did not.

“We want to make Garrett the focal point of the offense. We want to be sure that we’re targeting him and kind of setting things up for him,” Hackett said via video conference. “I think it’s been great to see those guys around him come up with big plays. If something’s not open, we never want to force the ball.”

As for Wilson, he took to social media to defend his comments.

But it wasn’t that Wilson backed it up and confirmed he was being critical of New York’s offense. Rather, Wilson pointed out the long-winded question he was responding to.

The wideout believed if everyone heard that followed by his answer, then it’s easy to understand where he’s coming from.

What do you think? Wilson’s sharing of his response can be found below:
