Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams emerges as possible draft target for Commanders

Williams is coming off an ACL injury and could prove to be a steal on draft day.

The Washington Commanders continue to evaluate cornerbacks ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. The Commanders hosted Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon on a top-30 visit Wednesday. Witherspoon is arguably the top cornerback prospect in the draft.

Washington also hosted Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. and Illinois defensive back Jartavius Martin on visits.

You can add another name to that list, courtesy of Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston. Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams recently visited Washington.

Who is Williams?

The 5-foot-10, 192-pound Williams redshirted during his first season at Syracuse before stepping into the starting lineup as a redshirt freshman in 2020. Williams would earn honorable mention All-ACC honors in each of the last three seasons, finishing his college career with 115 tackles, 21 passes defended and four interceptions.

Williams tore his ACL in 2022, forcing him to miss the NFL combine. Williams would’ve been a solid second-round selection before his injury. He’s aggressive, fast and excellent in zone coverage, which is something Washington plays a lot of.

He could fall to day three of the draft, where he has a chance to be an absolute steal.

Syracuse CB Garrett Williams reportedly visited Jaguars

The Jaguars are one of several teams that brought in Syracuse’s Garrett Williams, who is recovering from an ACL tear, for a visit.

Pass rushers and cornerbacks have been the focal point of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft and Syracuse defensive back Garrett Williams can be added to the list.

According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 in Houston, Williams has visited five teams including the Jaguars in the lead up to draft day.

Williams is a 5’10, 192-pound cornerback who suffered an ACL tear in October 2022. While the injury kept the Syracuse alum from participating in the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine and his pro day, he’s reportedly making good progress in his recovery.

Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke typically targets cornerbacks with more size and length than Williams, but there’s no arguing with his production on the field. In three years as a starter, Williams earned All-ACC nods three times.

Jacksonville has a rising star at cornerback in Tyson Campbell and may already have its starter on the other side in Darious Williams. However, depth at the position is thin after the team cut ties with Shaquill Griffin in March.

Vikings 2023 7-round mock draft: Matt Anderson’s 8.0

As we continue exploring different situations with the Vikings and the NFL draft, the latest one has them trading out of round one.

The Minnesota Vikings have addressed a lot of key needs this offseason with free agent signings as well as bringing back players from last year’s roster.

Now that we’ve seen the moves they’ve made, it gives us a better idea of how this Vikings front office might approach the draft. In this mock draft, I tried to think about the way that general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has attacked this offseason, which is targeting players with upside who are versatile.

One note before we start: we will be using Pro Football Focus’ mock draft simulator and the Rich Hill trade chart for any trades. Let’s take a look at how it unfolded.

Vikings 2023 7-round mock draft: Matt Anderson’s 7.0

In his latest seven round Minnesota Vikings mock draft, @MattAnderson_8 has the Vikings focusing on the outside before moving inward.

The Minnesota Vikings have made some great moves in the early stages of the offseason by filling some key needs. They were quick to sign several quality players in free agency, including pass rusher Marcus Davenport and cornerback Byron Murphy.

While these signings have undoubtedly strengthened the team, there are still some holes that need to be filled. The upcoming NFL Draft presents the Vikings with an opportunity to address those needs and add some promising young talent to their roster.

Vikings 2023 7-round mock draft: Matt Anderson’s 6.0

What could a Vikings draft look like with a big trade up for a quarterback? @MattAnderson_8 explores that in his latest Vikings mock draft

The NFL Combine is officially over and free agency is just around the corner. The Minnesota Vikings are already making moves by releasing longtime linebacker Eric Kendricks, and rumors are swirling that they’re considering parting ways with star wide receiver Adam Thielen and potentially even running back Dalvin Cook.

In this mock draft, I took an aggressive approach. It’s time to start building the next era of Vikings football and ushering in a new era of dominance on the field!

6 cornerbacks to watch for the Colts at 2023 NFL combine

Here are six cornerbacks to watch for the Colts at the NFL combine.

The 2023 NFL Combine is well underway, and the Indianapolis Colts have some critical decisions to make.

The status of cornerbacks Kenny Moore II and Brandon Facyson is undecided, leaving the door open for the team to draft a potential replacement for either role.

This year’s cornerbacks class is littered with talent, and the front office staff will have their work cut out for them when evaluating.

Here are six cornerbacks that could catch the eye of the Colts during the combine workouts Friday:

SKOL Search: Vikings’ Mock Draft Roundup 1.0

Our first mock draft roundup of the season has the Vikings selecting 12 different players

Mock draft season is upon us and that means our mock draft roundup is back!

What we do every week is track the mainstream outlets mock drafts and aggregate how many times a player gets selected. Last season, we tallied up 173 mock drafts and only 10 of them were on offense. This season could end up being much of the same.

We will track them and try to determine trends and patterns, along with giving my own analysis on how they could fit with the Minnesota Vikings

Way too early Patriots’ 7-round 2023 mock draft

Who did the Patriots pick up in this 2023 NFL mock draft simulation?

The NFL season is not quite over, but it’s never too early for 2023 mock drafts, especially considering how disappointing the 2022 season has been up to this point.

One thing is for certain: the Patriots have some draft capital to build on their successes over the last few drafts of adding key players like Kyle Dugger, Josh Uche, Mike Onwenu, Mac Jones, Christian Barmore, Rhamondre Stevenson, Cole Strange, Marcus Jones, Jack Jones and Bailey Zappe.

Although the jury is still out on most of the 2021 and 2022 draft classes, there is some positive success being built since Matt Groh transitioned into owning the draft process.

Today, we’ll see how 2023 could potentially shake out with a way too early seven-round mock draft with only two weeks left in the regular season. For reference, the Pro Football Network mock draft simulator was used for this draft, and the draft slots are projected as of 12/23/2022.

Bad news for a couple of ACC teams, who will be without these key defenders for the remainder of the season.

During press conferences at North Carolina and Syracuse on Monday morning, it was announced that Tar Heels jack linebacker Noah Taylor and Orange defensive back Garrett Williams will both miss the rest of the season due to injuries.

Taylor, who transferred to UNC following four years at Virginia, left the team’s game against Pittsburgh on Saturday after sustaining a non-contact knee injury

The graduate student and Tar Heels’ top pass rusher leads the team in sacks (3.5) and tackles for loss (6.0).

As for Williams, who is regarded as one of the ACC’s top cover corners, he suffered a torn ACL in Syracuse’s game against Notre Dame on Saturday.

The redshirt sophomore ranks tied for third on the team in tackles (36). He is tied for the team lead with two interceptions and is second on the team with three pass breakups.

Clemson of course beat Syracuse, 27-21, at Death Valley on Oct. 22, while it looks likely as things stand now that the Tigers will meet up with UNC in the ACC Championship Game.

Syracuse CB Garrett Williams out for season with torn ACL

One of the top cornerback prospects in college football will miss the rest of the 2022 season with a knee injury

One of the top cover men in all of college football will miss the rest of the 2022 season.

Syracuse cornerback Garrett Williams has suffered a torn ACL, and is out for the year, head coach Dino Babers confirmed to the media Monday.

A highly touted prospect in the 2023 NFL draft class, Williams was in the midst of a stellar campaign for the Orange, and projected by many as a potential first-round pick.

Now, he’ll focus on rehab and recovery, with a decision to make about whether or not to leave school early, or return for another year at full strength before making the jump to the pros.
