A brand deal that was destined to happen has finally been made official!

Alabama true-freshman cornerback, Ga’Quincy McKinstry, has a unique nickname. He goes by ‘Kool-Aid,’ and everyone calls him that. Before you ask any questions: yes, that includes Coach Nick Saban.

On July 1, 2021, the NCAA announced that student-athletes will be able to benefit from their name, image and likeness.

It wasn’t long after the news broke when Crimson Tide fans called for a brand partnership to be developed between the Pinson Valley native and the popular drink brand.

Here we are, on Aug. 18, 2021, the date when Kool-Aid McKinstry and Kool-Aid brand made their relationship official.

Kool-Aid’s official Twitter accounted shared a few photos to publicize the partnership.

No details regarding the partnership have been released, nor have there been any public plans. Who knows what will become of this? Certainly a good deal for both Kool-Aid’s!

Five-star cornerback Ga’Quincy ‘Kool-Aid’ McKinstry signed with the Alabama Crimson Tide during December’s early signing period.

Five-star cornerback Ga’Quincy ‘Kool-Aid’ McKinstry signed with the Alabama Crimson Tide during December’s early signing period.

McKinstry, who recently enrolled at Alabama, joined the basketball team for one practice this week and was seen on the court before the Crimson Tide’s 81-73 win over Mississippi State on Saturday night.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound McKinstry was a two-sport star for Pinson Valley High in Pinson, Alabama, was ranked as the No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 class, according to 247Sports.

After Alabama’s win over Mississippi State, head coach Nate Oats spoke about McKinstry, per Cecil Hurt of The Tuscaloosa News.

”It’s going to take a long time,” Oats said when asked about McKinstry possibly playing. “Think of all the time he has missed. But we are glad to have him out there. The guys like him. I like having him around.”

Alabama is currently 13-3 on the season and sits atop the SEC with an 8-0 record in conference play. The Crimson Tide have won nine consecutive games.

McKinstry will practice with the basketball team until spring workouts begin for the football team.

“When football conditioning starts, that takes precedence,” Oats said.

“But he’s great. I shot a game of pool with him after the game. On the court, he learns fast, he’s obviously an extraordinary athlete, and maybe he could give us some of that toughness that we need.”

McKinstry’s future is certainly in football, but it’s an impressive feat to immediately step on campus and begin practicing with the basketball team.

Alabama is back in action on Tuesday when Kentucky comes to Tuscaloosa.

2021 5-star Alabama target picks Florida

Alabama lost out on one of its top recruiting prospects for the class of 2021 when the 5-star cornerback pick Florida on Sunday.

Jason Marshall has been a heavy target for Alabama for awhile now, and the coaching staff felt like they had a chance at securing a commitment from the five-star cornerback out of Miami (Fla.).  Unfortunately, that will not be the case.

On Sunday, Marshall announced that he would be committing to the Florida Gators via his social media accounts, which includes Twitter. The loss of Marshall for Alabama does not come as a major shock, but there were many Crimson Tide fans and others who support the team who were hoping to have him added to an already impressive 2021 class.

According to the 247Sports composite rankings, Marshall is rated as the No. 29 overall player, No. 2 cornerback and No. 7 player from the state of Florida.

Alabama is expected to lose Patrick Surtain II early following the 2020 season, as the starting cornerback is expected to be one of the top defensive back prospects available for the 2021 NFL Draft. And with others such as Trevon Diggs, Scooby Carter and others gone, Marshall could have been a valuable addition for 2021.

Now the coaching staff will turn most — if not all — of its attention towards another five-star cornerback prospect, Ga’Quincy McKinstry. The Pinson Valley High School standout is rated as the No. 1 cornerback in the nation and currently has Alabama is his final three along with LSU and Auburn.

The Crimson Tide still has the No. 2 overall recruiting class (No. 1 in the SEC) for 2021.
