How the Chiefs should gameplan for Week 4 vs. Jets

How can the Kansas City #Chiefs come away with a Week 4 victory over the New York #Jets?

The Kansas City Chiefs will try to capture their third straight victory as they travel to New York to take on the Jets on Sunday Night Football.

Kansas City is coming off a much-needed, well-rounded victory in which it played well in all three phases. While it was refreshing to see them get back to their old ways on offense, the Chiefs’ defense is off to a dominant start, ranking in the top five in pass defense, total defense, and points allowed.

The Jets won their season opener in dramatic fashion but have come crashing back down to reality after losing two games in a row. Going from Aaron Rodgers to Zach Wilson at quarterback is proving to be an insurmountable task, even with a talented overall roster. New York is quickly losing ground to the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins in the AFC East.

How the Chiefs should gameplan for Week 3 vs. Bears

How can the Kansas City #Chiefs come away with a Week 3 victory over the Chicago #Bears?

The Chiefs return home for Week 3 to host the Chicago Bears at Arrowhead Stadium.

Kansas City got on the winning track last week, beating the Jacksonville Jaguars to move to 1-1 on the season. The offense continued with its struggles from Week 1 but made plays when it mattered the most. The Chiefs’ defense has carried the load so far and managed to keep the Jaguars out of the endzone last week. The unit has allowed just 23 points so far this season.

The 0-2 Bears haven’t lived up to their offseason hype, losing both of their games by double digits. Quarterback Justin Fields is still struggling as a passer and Chicago’s offense has turned the ball over multiple times in each game. The Bears’ defense has allowed the fourth most points in the NFL so far.

Check out our offseason report on Chicago, where you’ll find information about their offseason moves and key players. Now, let’s see what it will take for the Chiefs to move to a winning record and defeat the Bears.

How the Chiefs should gameplan for Week 2 vs. Jaguars

How can the Kansas City #Chiefs come away with a Week 2 victory over the Jacksonville #Jaguars?

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to bounce back after a disappointing Week 1 home loss as they travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars.

The Chiefs will get a major boost this week with tight end Travis Kelce expected to return from injury and defensive tackle Chris Jones is back with the team after signing a new contract. K.C. will look to avoid dropping to 0-2 for the first time since 2014.

The Jaguars are coming off a 31-21 road victory over the Indianapolis Colts. Check out our offseason report on the Jaguars, where you’ll find information about their offseason moves and key players. Now, let’s see what it will take for the Chiefs to get into the win column and knock off Jacksonville.

How the Chiefs should gameplan for Week 1 vs. Lions

How can the Kansas City #Chiefs come away with a Week 1 victory over the Detroit #Lions?

The regular season is finally here.

As we have in past seasons, we will take an in-depth look at the Kansas City Chiefs’ opponents and discuss what it will take for them to come out on top. Every team provides a unique challenge and will require a different game plan.

First up are the Detroit Lions. Check out our offseason report about the Lions, where you’ll find information about their offseason moves and key players.

Chiefs OC Matt Nagy admits there’s not much game planning in preseason

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy told the media about his expectations for the #Chiefs’ first preseason tilt after practice on Wednesday. | from: @WesleyRoesch

The Kansas City Chiefs usually take a traditional approach in the preseason, allowing the starters to play roughly one-quarter of the first game, two quarters in the second, and two to three in the third.

It’s a tried-and-true method that has worked well for the team, but not all teams adopt the same strategy as Kansas City’s. Some teams, like the Baltimore Ravens who actively hold the record for most preseason games won in a row with 23, take the preseason a bit more seriously in terms of winning the actual game.

For the Chiefs, preseason games are less about game planning, and more about getting players much-needed reps and finding out where they fit in their respective schemes.

“We don’t really care about that,” said Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy when asked whether he wants to know if they’ll be playing against their opponents’ starters in the preseason. “You can go back and see with the history of some of these defensive coordinators, head coaches, etc., you can see usually what they do in previous years.

“Regardless, for us, there are a lot of spots out there. We’re looking at the inside linebacker, the DB [defensive back], the corner, the safety – it’s not so much numbers, we’re not necessarily game planning – I don’t think many teams game plan so much anymore.”

Of course, the Chiefs still want to win these games regardless of whether they actually matter, but the preseason is ultimately an opportunity to get the veterans loose and the rookies some time on an NFL gridiron. And if that strategy works for a team that has won the Super Bowl in two of the last four years, who are we to question it?

How Chiefs should game plan for Super Bowl LVII vs. Eagles

Our @Nicolas_Roesch discusses how the #Chiefs should game plan for the #Eagles in #SuperBowlLVII.

The Kansas City Chiefs will look to capture their third Super Bowl title in franchise history when they face the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Chiefs survived a grueling AFC Championship Game against the Cincinnati Bengals, winning their third Lamar Hunt trophy in the last four years. Kansas City is battle tested and clicking on all cylinders, winners of seven in a row and having overcome multiple key injuries.

The Eagles have also overcome their share of injuries, but they also lost two of their last three games of the regular season. Despite that, they bounced back in a big way during the playoffs, outscoring their opponents 69-14. Philadelphia held the No. 1 seed in the NFC during the entirety of the regular season.

Let’s dive into this matchup and see what it will take for the Chiefs to become Super Bowl champions once again.

Matthew Stafford falling back on his process to help Rams offense improve

Stafford seemed confident in his ability to properly prepare for opponents, noting that his process has worked for the #Rams in the past.

Matthew Stafford has taken a step back in 2022, but that doesn’t mean that he has given up on helping the Los Angeles Rams improve as the season wears on. He has plenty of experience playing the underdog from his time spent with the Detroit Lions, and even as the NFL’s incumbent Super Bowl champion quarterback, he seemed to feel right at home when talking to the media about what he is doing to get back on top in his comments to the press on Wednesday.

Asked if he spends time watching film and preparing for opponents when he is away from the team facilities, Stafford told reporters that his operating procedure is tried and true, though he did not respond directly to the question.

“I think you’ve got to trust the process that’s gotten you here,” Stafford explained. “I’ve been playing this game a long time, had a lot of experience, both good and bad in situations. If you start grasping at straws and thinking this or that or this is going to make you better, a lot of times it’s just continuing to do your process and do it as well as you possibly can, trust that process.

“Then when you get out there on game day, go trust that as well. You can’t be sitting there on game day going, ‘Oh, did I not put the work in? Did I do this? Did I do that?’ You just trust what you know has always worked for you and continue to go out there and play free.”

Clearly, whatever Stafford did last season seemed to work for him, so it shouldn’t necessarily be expected that he change his routine because of a bad five-game stretch. That said, if he continues to struggle against beatable opponents, he will have no choice but to re-evaluate the process he has been following, and adjust it as needed to get the Rams back on top in the NFC West standings.

The offense’s struggles are only partially to blame on Stafford’s play. Injuries to his offensive line have limited his ability to throw the ball with consistent protection and caused him to make desperation throws to get the unit moving downfield. As his linemen return from injury and he gets a better sense of what it will take to succeed with the current crop of talent at his disposal, Stafford should see a mid-season renaissance as Los Angeles works its way into the middle part of their challenging 2022 schedule.

Colts’ keys to victory vs. Titans in Week 4

Here are the Colts’ keys to victory in Week 4 against the Titans.

Coming off a wild win, there is some optimism in the Circle City as the Indianapolis Colts prepare to host the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

Indy’s previous dominance in this division series has faded over the past three seasons, only winning one out of the last five games against Mike Vrabel’s squad.

This is sure to be a hard-hitting battle as both teams still believe they can turn their slow starts around and win the AFC South. If Frank Reich wants to get his team back on track, here are the keys to victory:

Report: Cowboys to hire Brian Schottenheimer in game-planning role

Schottenheimer, son of legendary head coach Marty, will chart league trends and help Kellen Moore and Dan Quinn implement ideas in Dallas. | From @ToddBrock24f7

The Cowboys are apparently still adding to their coaching staff.

As per senior NFL reporter Albert Breer, the team is hiring Brian Schottenheimer into a newly-created role where he’ll track league trends. He’ll then help both offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn in implementing ideas into their game plans in Dallas.

Schottenheimer served most recently as the passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Jacksonville last season. Prior to that, he spent three years as Seattle’s offensive coordinator.

The 48-year-old is the son of legendary coach Marty Schottenheimer, who passed away last year. Marty, coincidentally, gave Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy his first NFL job in 1993, hiring the Pitt graduate assistant as offensive quality control coach in Kansas City. It, too, was a job that didn’t exist at the time.

Over his own coaching career dating back to 1997, Brian has also been on staff with the Rams, Chiefs, Commanders (under their old name), Chargers, Jets, and Colts, and spent time in the college ranks at Syracuse, Southern Cal, and Georgia.

Schottenheimer’s game-planning role is said to be a unique one, though it sounds as though it will bear at least some resemblance to the position that Ben McAdoo filled last season on Mike McCarthy’s staff. McAdoo is now the head coach in Carolina after acting as a special assistant who did advance opponent scouting for the Cowboys.
