Steph Curry praises Kevon Looney’s 20 rebound performance in Game 3 vs. Kings

After Kevon Looney recorded 20 rebounds against the Kings, Steph Curry praised his teammate’s performance on the glass in Game 3.

While Steph Curry led the way with 36 points in the Golden State Warriors’ much-needed win over the Sacramento Kings in Game 3 at Chase Center on Thursday, Kevon Looney fueled the home team with a clutch performance on the glass.

Without Draymond Green due to suspension, Looney came up big in the frontcourt in Game 3 against Damontas Sabonis. While the Kings All-Star big man recorded 16 boards, Looney registered 20 rebounds of his own. Looney grabbed 11 of the Warriors’ 13 offensive rebounds on Thursday night.

Following Looney’s 20-rebound performance in Game 3, his teammate had nothing but praise for the Golden State center. Curry called Looney “relentless,” saying his performance was “amazing to watch.”

Yeah, he’s relentless. I don’t know what that probably feels like, but it’s just the way the ball, the angles, your effort, knowing that it’s going to be physical. You’re going to get knocked around but he’s ready to take all that physicality. And then he has to guard a tough matchup on the other side. He knows how to be effective when he’s out there. He’s shown it plenty of times before.

Nine offensive rebounds is huge for us to give us extra possessions. We were getting pretty solid looks for most of the game, but just weren’t hitting a lot of them. He was getting us extra possessions and that gets the crowd into it, it gets out momentum on our side. It’s amazing to watch.

In the Warriors’ 114-97 win on Thursday, Looney finished Game 3 with four points on 2-of-6 shooting from the field with 20 rebounds, nine assists and a steal in 31 minutes against the Kings.

With the series locked at 2-1, Looney, Curry and the Warriors will be back at Chase Center to host the Kings for Game 4 on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. PT in San Francisco.

Injury Report: Warriors’ Gary Payton II (illness) out for Game 3 vs. Kings

With Draymond Green already suspended for Game 3, the Warriors will also be without Gary Payton II on Thursday due to an illness.

With Draymond Green already suspended for Game 3, the Golden State Warriors will be down another key defensive piece on Thursday night against the Sacramento Kings.

Trailing 0-2 in the first round of the playoffs, the Warriors will have to find a way to secure their first win of the series without Gary Payton II available for Game 3.

Prior to Thursday’s tipoff in San Francisco, Payton II was ruled out for Game 3 due to an illness. He was initially listed as questionable heading into Thursday. Payton II missed practice on Wednesday due to his illness.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

Payton II is coming off a 13-point performance during Golden State’s loss in Game 2 on Monday. During the early stage of the playoffs, Payton II is averaging 10.5 points on 69.2% shooting from the field with five rebounds and two steals in 23.6 minutes per game.

Alabama MBB battles on the road to defeat South Alabama

Alabama’s men’s basketball team defeated South Alabama in Mitchell Arena on Tuesday night.

Alabama basketball traveled to Mobile to take on the South Alabama Jaguars on Tuesday night. In the end, the Tide were able to come away with a 65-55 victory.

The Tide were led offensively by freshman Brandon Miller who provided 19 points in 36 minutes of action. Others struggled to shoot, but the defense proved to be enough.

The Jaguars shot just 29.6% from the field while the Tide shot 32.4%. Both teams were able to shrink the floor and force tough shots on their opponents.

The Tide out-rebounded the Jaguars 58-35. That statistic played a key role in Nate Oats’ squad coming away with the first road victory of the season. With the win, the Tide improve to 3-0 on the new season. The team will return to Coleman Coliseum on Friday night to face the Jacksonville State Gamecocks.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama men’s basketball as the season continues.

Ahead of a pivotal Game 4, a new Finals MVP favorite has surged up the leaderboard

Not only is Golden State down 2-1 in the best of seven series ahead of Game 4 at TD Garden, Curry’s availability has been thrown into some doubt after suffering a left leg injury late in the fourth quarter on Wednesday while fighting for a loose ball.

Forget Finals MVP, that’s bad news overall for the Warriors if they hope to win another title. In the meantime, here’s who has taken over the top spot in our rankings as the series gets closer to crowning a champion.

LeBron James says Wesley Matthews deserves game ball for Game 3

LeBron James praised Wesley Matthews for his performance in the Los Angeles Lakers’ Game 3 win.

The Los Angeles Lakers continue to struggle on 3-pointers, but during the Game 3 win over the Phoenix Suns, it was an unlikely hero who delivered clutch shots to build the lead.

After Kentavious Caldwell-Pope went down with a left quad contusion in the third quarter, head coach Frank Vogel brought Wesley Matthews off the bench to be the shooting guard.

Game 3 marked the most minutes Matthews played in the series, as his 18:28 minutes of game time surpassed the 12 minutes he played in Game 1 and the four minutes he appeared in for Game 2.

But the reason Matthews played a series-high in minutes came from his ability to hit perimeter shots.

The 34-year-old shooting guard scored eight points, and six of them derived from 3-pointers. In the fourth quarter, Matthews drilled two shots from deep to widen the gap between the two teams.

He ended the game shooting 2-of-4 from 3-point range, but in the two games prior, he went 0-of-5, making Game 3 his best outing.

LeBron James took notice of Matthews’ production and said he deserves the game ball for helping the Lakers win, via Ryan Ward of LakersNation:

With Caldwell-Pope’s status ahead of Game 4 in the air, Matthews demonstrated he could rise to the occasion in a crucial situation if Caldwell-Pope is unable to play.

Lakers report card: Player grades for Game 3 win vs. Suns

How did the Los Angeles Lakers fare individually in the Game 3 win against the Phoenix Suns?

The Los Angeles Lakers claimed a 2-1 series lead on Thursday night after defeating the Phoenix Suns in Game 3, with a lead that blossomed to 21 in the fourth quarter.

Despite Los Angeles shooting just 7-of-28 from the perimeter, they scored 58 points in the paint and made 26 free throws to offset their shooting woes.

They outscored Phoenix by 20 in points in the paint and by 12 in made free throws. The Lakers showed how dominant they could be on both ends of the floor with their size advantage and overall solid defense.

Anthony Davis scored 34 points for the second-straight game to lead all scorers while LeBron James scored 21 and Dennis Schroder added 20.

Here’s how Los Angeles graded after the 109-95 win:

3 takeaways: Anthony Davis scores 34 points, Lakers take series lead vs. Suns

The Los Angeles Lakers won by 14 points over the Phoenix Suns in Game 3 of the first round, led by Anthony Davis’ 34 points.

Anthony Davis dominated yet again as the Los Angeles Lakers claimed the series lead, 2-1, following their Game 3 win against the Phoenix Suns, 109-95.

Both the Lakers and the Suns had a sluggish first half scoring-wise. As both squads have two of the top-six defenses in the league, they exchanged solid defensive possessions to force each other into tough shots.

The second quarter had a combined 28 points, with the Suns scoring just 12 points.

In the third quarter, however, the Lakers came out with the necessary energy. Led by LeBron James, who consistently looked to attack the basket after a slow first half, L.A. climbed to a double-digit lead.

Phoenix couldn’t muster a single basket against the Lakers’ stingy defense, trailing 91-70 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

However, Los Angeles became careless with the basketball and turned it over multiple times. Cameron Payne took advantage by making consecutive 3-pointers, but the Lakers slowed down the pace and came out on top.

Here are three takeaways from the game:

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope leaves Game 3 with left quad injury

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope went to the locker room after an injury during the third quarter in Game 3.

The Los Angeles Lakers are battling it out in Game 3 against the Phoenix Suns, and the physicality level has certainly increased.

But an unfortunate situation occurred in the third quarter involving Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

On a defensive possession, Caldwell-Pope trailed Devin Booker, who was in the middle of attacking the basket, but seemed to twist his knee as he tried to make a sudden stop to avoid contact with Booker.

Caldwell-Pope got up himself but hobbled towards the sideline, forcing the Lakers to call a timeout.

Caldwell-Pope tried walking it off on the bench but went to the locker room with the medical staff for further examination and was ruled to have a left quad contusion.

He played 20 minutes so far in the game before his exit, scoring five points with four rebounds and two steals.

LeBron James explains excitement over his first Lakers playoff game at home

LeBron James explains why he’s excited for Game 3 against the Phoenix Suns in Staples Center.

After eight seasons of not hosting a playoff game in Staples Center, the Los Angeles Lakers are finally returning home in Game 3 against the Phoenix Suns.

Despite winning the NBA Championship last season, it all transpired in the Orlando Bubble because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Teams played all their games in a neutral setting without fans, so home-court advantage didn’t exist for teams possessing the higher seed.

It was an unfortunate situation for the Lakers, who had finished the 2019-20 season with a 52-19 record, good for first place in the Western Conference.

Though they persevered to win it all, they couldn’t enjoy the ride with fans present.

The last time the Lakers hosted a playoff game in Staples Center occurred in the 2013 playoffs. They faced off against the San Antonio Spurs in the opening round, but San Antonio swept them, 4-0.

Similar to this season, the Lakers were also the seventh seed in that matchup, though their overall talent was nowhere near what they currently have.

Now, as Los Angeles has momentum following their Game 2 win Tuesday, they’ll have a capacity of approximately 7,500 fans in the arena.

After Los Angeles’ win, LeBron James explained his excitement on playing his first playoff game at home for the Lakers, via Ryan Ward of LakersNation:

The Lakers must hope James comes out aggressive against the Suns for this moment, as a win would put them up 2-1 on the series. Game 4, slated for Sunday, will also take place in Staples Center.
