The two Clemson units that need to show up the most against Furman

These two Clemson units need to have big performances against Furman.

Heading into its Week 2 matchup against Furman at Death Valley, two groups on the Clemson offense need to show up and perform.

The offensive line and the wide receivers need to have strong performances.

Of everything I watched from the Tigers’ Week 1 win over Georgia Tech, it was these two groups I walked away wanting to see more from. While many people are putting a great deal of blame of the early offensive struggles on starting quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, it isn’t necessarily warranted. At least not to the extent I’ve seen.

Uiagalelei definitely struggled early, but neither of these units did him any favors. As DJ started getting things going, the offensive line still seemed to struggle to win the battle up front, while the wide receivers failed to make many plays for their quarterback.

There were quite a few passes from Uiagalalei where I couldn’t help but think, “wow, what a beautiful ball”, that fell incomplete as a receiver failed to make a play on the ball. On the running side of things, Shipley, Pace and Mafah struggled to find any holes as the offensive line failed to supply them.

I’m not here to defend DJ because I expect more from him, just like everyone else. I think people need to take a step back and acknowledge the issue is deeper than just one player because he plays the most important position on the field.

Our score predictions for Clemson vs. Furman

The staff made their score predictions for Clemson’s matchup against Georgia Tech Furman.

We are a couple of days away from Dabo Swinney and the Tigers’ second game of the season in their Week 2 matchup at home against Furman.

Walking away from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta last Monday with a win, the 2022 Clemson team had their fair share of positives along with some negatives. While the defense looked just as good as advertised heading into the season, the offense struggled to open the game though they got better throughout the game.

The Tigers head into Week 2 against Furman as the hefty favorite as Swinney should be able to get a lot of his guys playing time in their first home game of the season.

Here at Clemson Wire, the staff broke down their predictions for the Tigers’ matchup with the Paladins. Here’s a look at what we’re thinking.

Why Samford Will Win

Samford came back after a tough loss to East Tennessee State to thump Western Carolina with QB Liam Welch having a huge 311-yard, two-touchdown passing day to go along with three rushing scores. The solid Bulldog O line dominated and took over in the second half.

Everyone’s going to beat up on Western Carolina like that, but it was a good leg-stretching moment for a Samford team that’s got the offensive balance on one side and the pass rush on the other. Furman is coming off a tough 14-13 loss to VMI after having a nightmare of a time keeping the Keydet offense out of the backfield.

Samford is going to bring the thump from the start.

Why Furman Will Win

Furman is supposed to be a whole lot better than this.

It had its fun against Western Carolina, too, but the O line had a rough day last week for an attack that got shutout in the second half of the VMI loss.

On the plus side, the defense was fantastic. The Paladins didn’t allow the Keydet running game to go anywhere and kept future Maryland QB Reece Udinski in relative check.

As rough as the Furman O was, the other side allowed just 268 yards. It has the talent – and now the desperation – to ramp things up against a Bulldog offense that will have its moments, but will struggle a bit to control the time of possession.

What’s Going To Happen

Furman is still good enough to push for the SoCon title, but it’s going to have a rough time against the Samford defensive front that”s going to be a pain all game long.

But the Paladin D will be better.

Welch will be good, but the rest of the Samford ground game will be held down while the Furman offense improves as the game goes on.

Furman (1-0) vs VMI (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Furman Will Win

The offense should go off.

The VMI O should be fun, but the D is about to have a bad day against a Furman attack that rolled up 533 yards in the 35-7 win over Western Carolina with good balance and an explosive second quarter to put it away.

It starts with a running game led by Devin Wynn – arguably the SoCon’s best back – who tore off 106 yards in the win, but he wasn’t alone. The offensive line dominated, the defensive front allowed 109 yards, and …

Why VMI Will Win

VMI isn’t Western Carolina, likely the worst team in the SoCon.

The defense isn’t going to be anything special, but the offense is going to be a blast with future Maryland Terrapin QB Reece Udinski – he’s transferring after the season – bombing away. He’s a 6-4, 221-pound playmaker who should be able to keep things moving for the Air Raid offense.

He’s not alone with a veteran offensive line in front of him, and a good receiving corps to work with, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, the Keydet defense.

This won’t be the 60-21 dropkicking like the 2019 version of this, but Furman’s offense will be balanced, consistent, and will be able to keep up in the shootout. Udinski will dink and dunk his way to big yards, but there won’t be enough deep shots or running production to keep up.
