Nick Chubb, Jake Fromm, and UGA football defeated the Samford Bulldogs 42-14 during the 2017 football season

The Georgia Bulldogs defeated the Samford Bulldogs 42-14 during the 2017 football season. Georgia was coming off an emotional victory at Notre Dame.

Kirby Smart and Georgia football went on to win the Rose Bowl and the SEC championship in the 2017 season. The Bulldogs lost in the national championship to Alabama, but Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett, who was a scout team quarterback for UGA in 2017, helped Georgia avenge that defeat in the 2021 national championship.

Georgia football has only played Samford once in school history. Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm threw only 13 passes in Georgia’s victory. However, Fromm connected on three touchdowns passes. Georgia ran the ball 54 times in the win. Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Todd Monken are much more willing to pass the ball in 2022.

Georgia running back Nick Chubb ran for 131 yards and scored two touchdowns. Linebacker Roquan Smith finished with six tackles. Fellow linebacker Lorenzo Carter recorded two sacks in Georgia’s win at home.

The 2017 edition of Samford was no cupcake. The Bulldogs’ starting quarterback, Devlin Hodges, started six NFL games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019.

Here’s photos from Georgia’s 2017 win over Samford:

Florida vs Samford Game Preview

Why Samford Will Win

Does this seem like a Florida team that’s on the right track?

Samford is just good enough to battle and bring a little bit of a fight with a strong offense that averages 450 yards and 37 points per game.

The passing game is dangerous and will keep on pushing the Gator secondary, and the defense is great at taking the ball away.

Basically, if Florida is moping, or looking ahead to Missouri and Florida State, this will be a fight.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Florida Will Win

The Samford defense isn’t good enough.

The Gators have to make this as simple as possible. Run, keep running, and let the grinding attack take over as the game goes on.

Samford doesn’t control the clock – it goes fast and should only have the ball for about 20 minutes in this – and Florida might be able to win this without having to throw a pass.

Of course the Gators will throw, but they don’t have to take any chances and don’t have to force anything. As long as they bring the energy, there won’t be any issues.

What’s Going To Happen

All of a sudden, Dan Mullen apparently can’t coach.

He had the Gators in the SEC championship last year and pushed and all-time great Alabama team, and now – in a bit of a rebuilding year – he’s on a hot seat? Yup.

That’s not going to play much of a role in this, but Florida should be a bit more fired up than it would normally be for a paycheck game.

Samford’s offense is good enough to put a few points on the board, but the Gators will run for well over 250 yards as it keeps on scoring on drive after drive after needing a little bit to get up to speed.

John Staton, Linebacker (No. 35):

Class: Graduate student

Height: 6-1

Weight: 225 pounds

Hometown: Atlanta, Georgia

High School: The Lovett School

Georgia Bulldogs linebacker John Staton IV transferred to Athens after having an impressive career with Samford. Staton elected not to play in Samford’s spring 2021 college football season.

Instead Staton elected to finish his college football career with Georgia. In 2019, Staton recorded 116 total tackles and was named first team All-Southern Conference. Staton recorded an incredible 22 tackles at Mercer in 2019.

John Staton graduated from Samford in 2020. He played in 34 career games with Samford, where he recorded 149 total tackles. His father, John III, played football at UNC.

Will Staton be able to earn playing time at linebacker for Georgia? Dan Lanning and the Bulldog defense have lots of talent like Nakobe Dean, Trezmen Marshall, Channing Tindall, and Quay Walker at inside linebacker.

Samford (1-1) vs Furman (1-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Samford Will Win

Samford came back after a tough loss to East Tennessee State to thump Western Carolina with QB Liam Welch having a huge 311-yard, two-touchdown passing day to go along with three rushing scores. The solid Bulldog O line dominated and took over in the second half.

Everyone’s going to beat up on Western Carolina like that, but it was a good leg-stretching moment for a Samford team that’s got the offensive balance on one side and the pass rush on the other. Furman is coming off a tough 14-13 loss to VMI after having a nightmare of a time keeping the Keydet offense out of the backfield.

Samford is going to bring the thump from the start.

Why Furman Will Win

Furman is supposed to be a whole lot better than this.

It had its fun against Western Carolina, too, but the O line had a rough day last week for an attack that got shutout in the second half of the VMI loss.

On the plus side, the defense was fantastic. The Paladins didn’t allow the Keydet running game to go anywhere and kept future Maryland QB Reece Udinski in relative check.

As rough as the Furman O was, the other side allowed just 268 yards. It has the talent – and now the desperation – to ramp things up against a Bulldog offense that will have its moments, but will struggle a bit to control the time of possession.

What’s Going To Happen

Furman is still good enough to push for the SoCon title, but it’s going to have a rough time against the Samford defensive front that”s going to be a pain all game long.

But the Paladin D will be better.

Welch will be good, but the rest of the Samford ground game will be held down while the Furman offense improves as the game goes on.

Western Carolina (0-1) vs Samford (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Western Carolina Will Win

The Catamounts might have been whacked around by Furman 35-7 in the opener, but the defense was able to hold up relatively well in the second half and managed to come up with three takeaways overall.

Samford lost to East Tennessee State 24-17 with a running game that didn’t go anywhere. The offensive line struggled to generate a consistent push and the O stalled over the last three quarters. If Western Carolina can generate any sort of a pass rush, it’ll slow things down. But …

Why Samford Will Win

The Samford passing game should be fine.

It took 54 passes that didn’t go too far, but Chris Oladokun threw for 222 yards and spread the ball around a bit in the loss to ETSU. As long as he’s limiting the mistakes – he threw two interceptions – the offense should be fine.

Samford isn’t Furman defensively, but it’s going against a Western Carolina offense that managed just 109 yards and five first downs with an attack that went nowhere.

Just get a few early scores, don’t screw up, and it should all work out fine for the Bulldogs.

What’s Going To Happen

Western Carolina just never had the ball against Furman in the loss, and to keep pressing this point, Samford isn’t at that level. However, it’s good enough to roll though this game with an easy win as long as the O is balanced and mistake free.
