Who: Fresno State (22-13) Vs Coastal Carolina (19-13)

When: Friday April 1, 3:00PM PT

Where: Conway, S.C.

TV: ESPN+

Series Record: First meeting between these schools

The CIT Championship is here at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C! The Fresno State Bulldogs are coming off of a blowout win over Southern Utah in the Semifinals. The Chanticleer of Coastal Carolina are coming off a buzzer beating win over South Alabama. These two programs are meeting for the first time in school history for The Basketball Classic Championship.

Keys to the Game: Coastal Carolina

The Chanticleer are playing in a postseason championship game for the second straight year and are looking to be the first Sun Belt to win a postseason championship. Coastal Carolina is led by Senior Guard, Rudi Williams who is putting up 19.7ppg and shooting 60% from the field in the tournament. Chanticleer also has Senior Guard Vince Cole who is averaging 15.3 ppg in this tournament.

If Coastal Carolina wants to bring home the championship, it will start on the defensive side of the ball and find a way to slow down Orlando Robinson. They also have to get the ball out of Robinson’s hands. Secondly, control the tempo and win the transition game. Offensively Coastal Carolina has to limit turnovers and find ways to score inside the paint. Chanticleer can hit shots but the Bulldogs defense is one of the best in the nation. Coastal Carolina has to find multiple ways to score to stretch out the Bulldogs defense.

Keys to the Game: Fresno State

Fresno State is looking for its first postseason title since the 1983 NIT. Many people believe this year’s squad was a NIT caliber team. After not being selected into the NIT, the Bulldogs have an opportunity to show everyone why they should have been in the tournament.

Fresno State is led by Junior Forward Orlando Robinson who is averaving 19.4ppg and 8.2rpg. This could be Robinson’s last game as a Bulldog as some reports have indicated Robinson will be Declaring for 2022 NBA Draft. The Bulldogs also have Junior Guard Isaiah Hill who is putting up 10.1ppg. If Fresno State is going to capture its first postseason title since 1983, it will start with the defense. The Bulldogs did a great job against Southern Utah defensive holding them to under 50 points and will need to do more of the same tonight. The Bulldogs have to contain Coastal Carolina backcourt. Offensively the Bulldogs need to keep getting consistent bench production. Donavan Yap and Destin Whitaker have both been a great boost offensively off the bench. Lastly, hitting shots. The Bulldogs shot 52% from three and went an overall 11-21 from the perimeter. This helped Robinson see less double teams and let him go 1 on 1 inside the post.

This is one of the four final games left in this year’s College Basketball season. Can the Chanticleer of Coastal Carolina capture their and the Sun Belt conference its first postseason championship? Or will the Bulldogs of Fresno State overcome its up and down season and get its first postseason title since 1983?

Who: Youngstown State (19-14) Vs Fresno State (20-13)

When: Wednesday, March 23rd, 7:00 p.m. PT

Where: SaveMart; Fresno, California

TV: ESPN+

Odds: Fresno State -13.5

Series Record: First Meeting

The Basketball Classic is onto the Quarterfinals stage. The Youngstown State Penguins come into the Save Mart Center to take on the Fresno State Bulldogs. Both teams are coming off wins and are meeting for the first time in program history for a spot in the semifinals.

Keys To The Game:  Youngstown State

For the Penguins this is their first Division 1 postseason road game and are looking for their second, 20 win season since becoming a Division 1 program.  The Penguins are led by Junior Guard, Dwayne Cohill who is averaging 14.6ppg and shooting 45% from the field. Cohill is coming off a 28 point game. Another player to watch is Senior Forward, Michael Akuchie with 13.6ppg and 7.8rpg, a contest.

If the Penguins are looking to move on, they have to start on the defensive side of the ball with limiting the inside shots. The Bulldogs scored 38 points inside the paint; the Penguins have to limit that and make the Bulldogs win by shooting the ball which they have struggled to do most of the season. Next, they must limit the Transition baskets. Fresno State did a great job pushing the ball up the court and getting easy transition baskets against Eastern Washington.

Youngstown State needs to control the tempo and make the Dogs beat them with their half-court offense. Finally, turnovers: the Bulldogs did a great job on the defensive side and forced 17 turnovers last game. The Penguins have to limit the turnovers and stretch the Bulldogs defense.

Keys to the Game: Fresno State

The Bulldogs may have had their best offensive performance all season against Eastern Washington. The Bulldogs put up 83 points and got their first win of the season when they allowed 70 points or more. Fresno State also got a bit of a lift from its bench with 24 bench points and four players in double figures. One of those double figure scorers was Junior Forward, Anthony Holland who had a team high of 18 points with 8 rebounds. Deon Stroud also may have had his best performance in quite a while.

Stroud finished with 13 points and a SportsCenter top 10 dunk.  Now the Bulldogs look to take it another step closer to a championship. If the Bulldogs played the way they did last time, they will be a tough team to knock out. That starts with Orlando Robinson getting help offensively. The Bulldogs need to keep getting production from Holland, Stroud, and Colimerio like they did last game. Another Key component will be fastbreak points. Fresno State was out and running, pushing the ball up the court and getting easy baskets.

Staying away from the half court offense really helped the Bulldogs. Defensively the Bulldogs do a great job creating turnovers but have to limit the threes. The Bulldogs allowed 12 threes and the Penguins shot about 22 threes a game. If the Bulldogs can limit the premier shots and control this game, they will have a really good shot at moving onto the semifinals.

It’s the first meeting between these two schools. A spot for the Semifinals is on the line. Will the Penguins of Youngstown State get their first division 1 postseason road win? Can the Bulldogs put together another great offensive performance?  The winner takes a step closer to The Basketball Classic Championship.

The Fresno State Bulldogs are moving onto the quarterfinals to face the San Diego State Aztecs. The Bulldogs escaped the first round of the Mountain West Tournament with an overtime 69-67 win thanks to Jordan Campbell game winner with 0.6 seconds left in the game.

The San Jose State Spartans gave Fresno State all they could handle. What a game from Tim Miles’ squad. The Spartans did not look like a one-win conference team. What a game from Omari Moore who led San Jose State with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The Spartans shot 45% from three but shot 35% from the free throw line and had 14 turnovers. San Jose had a chance to win it in overtime but a late turnover with 22 seconds left caused by Fresno State full court press lost the Spartans this game. San Jose State is still looking for it’s first tournament win in the Mountain West as they finish the season 8-23.

For the Bulldogs they managed to squeeze this game out thanks to Orlando Robinson who had 31 points and 6 rebounds. The poor shooting continued today as the Bulldogs shot 4-23 from three at 17% and missed 13 free throws going 19-32 at 59%. Coach Hutson can’t be happy with today’s effort and performance. Robinson was the only player in double figures until overtime. Isaiah Hill finished with 14 points.  Defensively the Bulldogs have to do a better job finding the corner shooters and limiting the inside scoring. But Defense was the reason why the Bulldogs won today as they forced a late turnover to set up the game-winning shot.

Next up, the Bulldogs will face San Diego State in the quarterfinals. The last time these two met the game went to double overtime as the Aztecs escaped with a one-point victory. Fatigue will play a factor for the Bulldogs. Can someone other than Robinson step up and make some plays?

KenPom Prediction: 58-54 Aztecs

The Aztecs are in the field no matter what, but adding wins may help with their seeding. The Fresno State Bulldogs are hopeful for an NIT invite, and beating SDSU would go a long way in that regard.

Fresno State squeaked past San Jose State in its opening round game, by winning in overtime over the 11th seeded Spartans by a score of 69-67.

San Diego State took both games during the season, by an average of 9 points. That may not matter all that much, as Fresno State had beaten San Jose State by an average of 25 points and just barely beat them in overtime in the first round. The game figures to be another rock fight, just like the first two were.

On top of having more talent and sweeping the regular season, the Aztecs will be rested as they didn’t play on Wednesday, while Fresno St. just finished an overtime game in the last game on Wednesday. They’ll have to recover from that quickly in order to beat SDSU.

Both teams will key in on their opponent’s star and try to force role players to beat them. The Aztecs will throw defenders at Orlando Robinson, while the Bulldogs will throw defenders at Matt Bradley.

In the end, the difference between talent and fatigue should carry the Aztecs to victory to face either Utah St. or Colorado St.

Prediction: 66-58 Aztecs

Fresno State does have Orlando Robinson

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Fresno State Bulldogs finished the regular season  (18-12 8-9 in MW play). Now the Bulldogs are the sixth seed in the Mountain West Tournament and will face the 11th seed San Jose State Spartans in the first round. Currently, the Bulldogs would most likely have to make a deep run in the conference tournament for a NIT bid and would have to win the tournament to go to the big dance. So how can the Bulldogs be a bid stealer?

2022 Mountain West Tournament Preview

Orlando Robinson:

The All First Team Mountain West Orlando Robinson has been one of the most exciting players to watch this season. The Junior Forward is fourth in the conference in scoring and rebounding at 19.2ppg and 8.2rpg. Robinson can score from all over the floor and is one of the best shot blockers in the conference. He is the anchor of the Bulldogs offense. If Robinson can build on from his last game against Wyoming and gets some offensive help the Bulldogs can make a run. These could be the final games for Orlando Robinson in a Bulldogs Uniform and nothing would be sweeter than a trip to the big dance.

Defense:

The Heart and Soul of this team is the Bulldog’s defense with being second in the conference and third in the nation in scoring defense. Also one of the best rebounding teams in the conference. Defensively the Bulldogs can do it all – force turnovers and run the break, led by Anthony Holland who will guard anyone and has great size and is a very physical player.

Holland has the third most steals on the team. The Bulldogs also can clog up the middle with two seven footers in Orlando Robinson and Braxton Meah. The Bulldogs have speed, size, athleticism, and the ability to play with a lot of energy on the defensive side. Only two teams all season have scored more than 70 points on the Bulldogs. The Dogs have also held 5 opponents to 45 points or less. The Bulldogs will need to bring that same effort and energy to Vegas.

Offense:

From a great defense to a sluggish offense, if the Bulldogs are going to pull any upset or make a run, somebody outside of Orlando Robinson has to step up. We have seen Jordan Campbell, Anthony Holland, and Isaiah Hill switch around being the number two scorer but haven’t been consistent. If the Bulldogs can find some scoring and shot making that will open up the floor for Robinson and give a lot more opportunities for one on one. The Dogs have to avoid the long scoring droughts! We have seen Isaiah Hill and Holland get hot for stretches of games this season. Can they bring that to Vegas?

Can the Bulldogs win a Close One?

The last two games of the season the Bulldogs dropped heartbreakers to San Diego State and Wyoming. The Dogs hurt themselves in both games committing silly fouls, missed free throws, and poor shot selections. In fact, nine of the twelve losses this season the Bulldogs lost by single digits. Also, the Bulldogs had tied the game or had a lead in the second half in nine of the twelve losses.

Five of the single digits losses are against the four of the top five teams in the Mountain West Tournament. Four of them went to overtime. The Bulldogs have shown they can play and hang with the top teams in the conference. The question is – can someone step up and provide scoring down the stretch when the game is on the line? Can the Bulldogs close one out?

Using Advanced analytics to cut through the smoke

Contact/Follow @aztecbreakdown.

The regular season is over. All that’s left is the conference tournament and then any post season tournaments Mountain West teams get into. It has been a wild season with a ot of parity throughout the league. The talent this year is arguably better than it’s been top to bottom in a long time.

The past few seasons I have looked at who were the best players in the conference, using a combination of advanced analytics. This entry marks the second installment for the 2021-22 season.

Three different advanced analytics will be used. The analytics are: Player Impact Plus Minus, Points Over Expectation, and Bayesian Performance Rating.

These 3 contributions put together should give us a good idea of who’s performed the best this season, as they measure different things, such as impact vs. efficiency. They all also measure contributions on the offensive and defensive sides of the floor, enabling them to paint a full picture.

2022 Mountain West Tournament Bracket, TV Schedule Announced

Player Impact Plus Minus – Also known as PIPM, this is an impact stat that primarily takes it’s measurements from box score stats. Basically, it measures how well a player has performed in the role they’re in. A player being used in the way that best suits their skill set will have a higher score than a player who is talented in certain areas but not able to show that talent off. As an example, if Hunter Maldonado was asked to shoot 3 pointers all game he would hurt his team, as that’s not his skill set. This statistic is important because no matter how purely talented a player may be, if the player doesn’t use the talents correctly it will hurt the team and prevent winning. PIPM also makes adjustments for the quality of opponents. For more on PIPM click here.

Points Over Expectation – Also known as POE, this is an efficiency stat. It takes into account the number and type of shots a player takes (or defends) and compares the outcome to what an average player would’ve done with the same number and type of shots. A score of zero is the equivalent of an average player. Since POE takes into account the number of shots, than the higher usage a player has, the more likely they are to be farther from 0. So players that are really efficient on large volume are the ones that get good scores here. It is also a per game stat, as opposed to a per 100 possession stat. Since basketball is about scoring more points than your opponent, someone who can score, and defend, at an efficient level is a valuable player. For more on POE click here.

Bayesian Performance Rating: Bayesian Performance Rating, or BPR, attempts to qualify the value a player gives their team while on the court primarily by measuring offensive and defensive ratings while a player is on the floor. It is an impact stat in the vein of PIPM, but uses different inputs to estimate the impact a player has. Similar to PIPM, it makes adjustments for the quality of teammates as well as opponents in it’s calculations, so that fans can better determine who is good vs. who plays with good teammates. A score of 0 is considered average. To learn more about BPR click here.

Combining the different methodologies of who helps their team when they’re on the floor, who looks good in the box score, and who is efficient should give us a pretty good feel for who has perfromed well this season, as these metrics will help cover up each other’s weaknesses.

Simply taking the average of these numbers won’t work though, as they measure different things. So Z-scores will be used. Basically, Z-scores measure how far away something is from average, with zero considered to be average. Once the Z-scores for all three metrics are calculated, the average of those numbers will be taken to determine who has been the best so far.

To give you a feel for Z-scores, last year, using the same methodology, Jordan Schakel led the league with a score of 2.777, and Neemias Queta came in second with a score of 2.694. Bryce Hamilton was considered pretty average with a Z-Score of 0.074.

With the boring explanation out of the way, lets look at the results.

WHO: San Diego State Aztecs (20-7) Vs  Nevada Wolfpack (12-16)

When: Saturday, March 5th, 10:30 PM ET/ 7:30 PM PT

Where: Reno, NV

TV: CBS Sports Network

STREAM: FuboTV — Get a free trial

The Aztecs travel to Reno for the first time since 2020. In that game Malachi Flynn and Jalen Harris had a duel. The two front runners for Player of the year that season combined for 60 points in the game. This matchup likely won’t have as many fireworks.

Nevada has under achieved this season. They were widely seen as a top 3 or 4 team in the conference before the games started. They are currently in 8th place. Grant Scherfield hasn’t had the All-American season many expected. Both he and Warren Washington missed some time with injuries. IT has been a bumpy season, and they have lost three in a row.

The Aztecs have won eight of their last nine, and the one loss was by one point on the road to Boise St. They haven’t lived up to preseason expectaitons either, but the Aztecs seem to be finding their stride at the right time.

That being said, this will not be an easy game for either side. The Aztecs struggled to beat Fresno St. at home in double overtime on March 3rd. This will be their second game in three days, and they likely have tired legs. In addition, the Aztecs won the first matchup in Viejas by only two points. Both Grant Schedrfield and Warren Washington missed that game, and Nevada still played the Aztecs tough on the road. San Diego State may be a better team on paper, but with the context of fatigue, and better matchups for Nevada this time around, they have a real shot at pulling off the upset.

Desmond Cambridge did some damage in the last matchup. He had 18 points on 50% from deep. He has a history of playing well against SDSU, even going back to his days at Brown University. Adding Grant Scherfield to that production may be enough to give the Wolfpack the edge. Despite not living up to lofty expectations, he is arguably the best point guard in the league. He is 12th in the nation is assist percentage, is great at getting to the free throw line, and is known for hitting clutch shots late in games.

The Aztecs start with Matt Bradley. He carries the offense most nights, and has scored 56 points in the last two games. He scored 26 agaisnt the 22nd rated defense of Fresno St. despite being double and triple teamed when he touched the ball. He is as close to unguardable as a player can be.

Nathan Mensah is the anchor for the best defense in the nation, and is the front runner for Defensive Player of the Year in the Mountain West. He is 26th in the nation in block percentage, and is mobile enough at 6’10” to switch onto opposing guards, ruining the offensive flow of opponents.

The Aztecs are 6 point favorites in this game according to KenPom.

Keys for SDSU- The Aztecs will need someone to step up and help Matt Bradley. Aside from Matt Bradley no Aztec scored in double digits in the first meeting against Nevada. Getting some productuon from someone else will help take attention off of Bradley so he can continue to be efficient.

They also need to fight through the fatigue. They are playing their second game in three days, they already looked tired in the first one, and that game went to double overtime. They will have time to rest after this game, as they have locked up a top-5 finish in the conference, meaning they won’t play again until Thursday. They need to find a way to push through for 40 minutes to get the win.

Keys for Nevada – Nevada kept themselves in the game by sharing the ball and hitting shots from deep. The Aztecs clog the paint and have multiple rim protectors. Having a distributor like Scherfield back may help draw extra defenders to leave shooters open.

They will also want to shrink the paint and force the Aztecs to beat them from outside. SDSU does not have many iutside shooters, and playing tired will likely lead to missing shots short. If they can protect the paint they can prevent the Aztecs from scoring easy baskets.

Predictions – Nevada is a proud program, and over the last few years they have matchup up well with SDSU. They have lost their last three matchups with SDSU by a combined nine points, all at Viejas. Playing at home, with a healthy roster, and the Aztecs being fatiqued, should all combine to lead to an upset by Nevada. The Aztecs will have enough fight and defense to keep it close, but their inability to hit free throws to close games will burn them in this one.

Prediction – 62-60 Wolfpack
