Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 31

Today’s installment focuses on the eight players who wore No. 31 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

On this day: Barros signed; Atkins, Brickowski, Roberts Kabengele born; Garfinkle passes

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed point guard Dana Barros, and Chucky Atkins, Frank Brickowski, and Fred Roberts were born, and Jack Garfinkle passed away.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, point guard Dana Barros signed with the team in 2004 as an unrestricted free agent in what would be the last, very brief stop of a 14-season career. It would be Barros’ second stint with the Celtics, having previously played five seasons for Boston between 1995 and 2000.

A product of Boston College, Barros was a local guy who was born in Boston in 1967. Drafted with the 16th overall pick of the 1989 NBA draft by the Seattle Supersonics, Barros would play for that team and the Philadelphia 76ers before joining the Celtics in 1995 and would be dealt to the Dallas Mavericks in a massive, four-team deal in 2000.

He would be dealt yet again to the Detroit Pistons two months later.

On this day: Fred Roberts ‘drafted’; Gary Payton, Javonte Green born

On this day, the Boston Celtics lost Fred Roberts to the Miami Heat in the 1988 NBA expansion draft, and Gary Payton and Javonte Green were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team lost power forward Fred Roberts in the 1988 NBA expansion draft, held to populate two new teams set to join the league that coming season, the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat.

Technically speaking, the Heat drafted Roberts with the fifth overall pick of the expansion draft but immediately traded him to the Milwaukee Bucks for a collection of draft assets. Roberts himself had come to the team in a trade from the Utah Jazz (for the pick that would one day become current-day NBA head coach Billy Donovan), where he would play two seasons for the storied franchise in a reserve role.

Roberts would average 5.8 points, 2.4 rebounds, and an assist per game while with the team.

On this day: McHale, Embry, Thompson inducted; Brown, Moore drafted

On this day, Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Jaylen Brown and E’Twaun Moore were drafted.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, franchise legends Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. McHale had been drafted by the Celtics out of the University of Minnesota with the third overall pick of the 1980 NBA draft.

That deal for that pick, which Boston had acquired along with big man Robert Parish in exchange for the top overall pick of that draft, was widely considered to be one of the most lopsided deals in league history. McHale would have an immediate impact on the young core being built around forward phenomenon Larry Bird.

Along with Parish, forward Cedric Maxwell, point guard Dennis Johnson and shooting guard Danny Ainge, the Celtics would form a dynasty he would win three championships with in the 1980s.
