Black Friday may be over, but Microsoft is still feeling the spirit of bargains, with some big Xbox Series X|S sales going on right now

Black Friday may be over, but Microsoft is still feeling the spirit of bargains, with some big Xbox Series X|S sales going on right now. Many of Microsoft’s Xbox Black Friday deals are actually sticking around, including a pretty sweet console bundle deal.

If you’re just after a console, you get them at a respectable discount for the time being. Microsoft is offering the Xbox Series X for $399.99, which is $100 off its usual $499.99 price. The console comes with 1TB of memory and one Xbox controller. While it doesn’t come with any games, you can purchase a console Game Pass subscription for $1 for your first month and $9.99 per month after that. Game Pass gives you access to hundreds of games, including Bethesda’s library, a hefty number of Sega games, and some of the best indie games around.

The Series S – a smaller, digital-only, less powerful alternative – is going for $249. It normally costs $299.99. Xbox is running a special on the Series S Starter Bundle as well, which gets you the system and three months of Game Pass Ultimate for $239.99. Game Pass Ultimate includes Game Pass for console and PC, so if you game on Windows 10 or Windows 11, you have a pretty solid selection of games to choose from on your PC as well.

You can also grab a Series X bundled with a digital version of Diablo 4 for $399.99, which is essentially giving you a free copy of the game. There’s a similar bundle that includes Forza Horizon 5 instead, and it’s also going for $399.99.

Other retailers, including Amazon, have similar offers running, though the stock and pricing seem to fluctuate a bit more unreliable. It’s worth checking, but make sure to keep an eye on Microsoft’s store as well.

New Forza Horizon 5 DLC brings back rally campaigns

Playground Games announced the newest Forza Horizon 5 DLC in a new showcase and highlighted some of its features, including the rally race

Playground Games announced the newest Forza Horizon 5 DLC in a new showcase and highlighted some of the racing game expansion’s biggest features, including the rally’s return. The Forza Horizon 5 DLC Sierra Nueva releases March 29, 2023, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it’s free for owners of the premium bundle. Those who own the standard version can upgrade at any time and will receive all existing DLC, including the Hot Wheels expansion.

The new Forza Horizon 5 DLC adds a sizeable map north of the main game’s Mexico map, with a range of new environments, including a palm forest – Forza’s first fully smashable forest – an abandoned quarry complete with machinery you can drive on, and a desert pocked with craters, which is also home to the new Horizon festival outpost and its celebrations.

Playground is bringing rally adventures back for the first time since Horizon 1, giving you the option to race off-road – and even without the guiding blue line, if you want a steeper challenge – for the entire campaign. If you don’t fancy rally races, you can choose traditional races such as those in the base game instead and still complete the entire campaign with all of its unlockables.

Playground said the new region gave them the chance to experiment with new and more difficult road types as well. You’ll encounter harder turns, crests, bumps, hairpins, and even corners that drop off completely after you start turning, so picking the right car and practicing is a must.

Car progression from the Hot Wheels expansion is gone as well, so you’re free to pick whatever you want, including the new Ford offerings and the Scumbug, a rally kart-style car based on the Volkswagen Beetle.

You can join a rally team and complete rally challenges to unlock new cars and, eventually, a new Goliath tournament, the first since Forza Horizon 3.

It sounds like a massive update, but just how big remains a mystery. Playground coyly refused to show the map and said they would reveal it at a later date before launch.

Forza and Gran Turismo devs pay respects to Ken Block

The late rally driver made appearances in several video games, and developers are paying respects.

Ken Block, the legendary rally driver, recently passed away at age 55 in a snowmobile accident.

Block’s team, The Hoonigans, announced his death Tuesday on Instagram.

“It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today,” read the post. “Ken was a visionary, a pioneer, and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

Block was no stranger to the video game world, making appearances in numerous high-profile racing titles – including Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo, Need for Speed, and Dirt just to name a few.

Developers from several of these games took to social media, honoring Block’s memory with various messages.

“[Ken Block] from [The Hoonigans] had a huge influence on the motorsports community around the world,” Forza Motorsport said on Twitter. “Our deepest condolences to his family. You will be missed, Ken.”

“Devastating news about the loss of [Ken Block] – he was a legend in Motorsports and will be dearly missed,” Forza Horizon said on Twitter. “Our deepest condolences to his family and the team at [The Hoonigans].”

“RIP Ken Block,” Gran Turismo said on Twitter. “A legend lost too soon.”

“Rest In Peace, Legend. You truly inspired millions of us, and we’re forever grateful,” Need for Speed said on Twitter. “We love you, Ken.”

Block was perhaps best known for gymkhana-style races and also took part in skateboarding and snowboarding competitions.

Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels review – (a little) more than a simple reskin

Not a massive expansion but more of the same great quality.

Playground Games isn’t new to exotic expansions, and if you remember Lego Speed Champions, you know what we mean. With Forza Horizon 5, the studio didn’t want to betray fans’ expectations, and picked Hot Wheels scale model cars as the centerpiece for its first DLC

This additional content introduces a Hot Wheels open world “above” Forza Horizon 5’s Mexico: a surreal network of orange and blue tracks suspended above the desert sands. It all comes together as soon as you get a taste of what it means to just touch those incredibly high speeds on those incredibly heady heights.

[mm-video type=video id=01g8bhppxvfvdjxkst6t playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01g8bhppxvfvdjxkst6t/01g8bhppxvfvdjxkst6t-982c9c8be29e92c7ae7fc9b699a466f1.jpg]

The British developer didn’t want to just cover the setting and cars in a Hot Wheels skin, though. The setting also introduces a new gravity mechanic, which can pull you down or off the track and severely slow you down when going uphill. Stopping the car in the middle of a turn can cause you to fall down for hundreds of meters in the Mexico below, which still exists but is very limited compared to Forza Horizon 5’s – it’s mostly the place where you see the Hot Wheels ramps begin.

Consequently, it’s key that you get a good trajectory when entering a turn, sincecutting a corner means you’ll literally be able to throw your car down a turn and use its weight to score a significant speed boost. You’ll also have an icon in the middle of the screen to tell you if you’re taking advantage of gravity or fighting against it – a helpful indicator, if somewhat annoying due to the size of it.

The map hosting the new Hot Wheels open world features multiple biomes as usual in Forza Horizon, from snow to deserts, the iconic death loops, and easter eggs for fans to find. This, together with those speeds and new mechanics, makes it particularly fun to explore, with the usual “puzzle” component built around how to reach that specific billboard you need to smash.

The new setting also features huge fans to further boost your cars’ speed on straights, boosters on the ground, and waterlogged segments to make your car slip through points of the track. It’s arcade racing made even more arcade, and that is also reflected in the new free fast travel policy – you can move anywhere on the map, at any point, without spending a single cent. If you’ve already played the base game, that’s refreshing since you might want to get straight to the heart of the DLC, and that’s useful if you consider that the Hot Wheels open world can feel a little labyrinthine at times.

The original Forza Horizon 5 is a “map game,” but the Hot Wheels expansion doesn’t feature as many events to play through, and you’ll find yourself pushed to play missions instead. These Fortnite-like challenges could easily be the best the DLC has to offer – in some of them, you’ll be tasked with creating your own path to reach a set location in a set time, and that really makes you feel like you’re breaking new ground (something Microsoft games have already explored in the recent past with Sea of Thieves and Flight Simulator).

The game now features ten new iconic Hot Wheels cars, and a story completely focused on this brand’s legacy and some of the key points in its history. It’s spread across five points, which you can play right away or wait for them to pop up on your map. It often feels like in-game ads, not the best feeling in the world when you’ve just spent $19.99 to purchase the DLC, so much that the narrator throws a joke or two about that to make it feel a bit more natural. If you’re a Hot Wheels fan, you’ll enjoy the history lesson or hear the things you already know in a video game you love, otherwise it’ll inevitably feel a little awkward.

Overall, Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels is not a massive expansion, and maybe $14,99 would’ve been its ideal price tag. However, in terms of quality, creativity, and flexibility of its game design, it really shows how Forza Horizon 5 could easily create content out of anything, and still manage to keep us glued to the screen. Whether it’s a new game, or another expansion, we simply want more of that.

The 15 best PC games of all time

Got your ticket there for the best PC games of all time? Ah, you do. Welcome – come inside.

Got your ticket there for the best PC games of all time? Ah, you do. Welcome – come inside. You can hang your jacket on one of those vectors jutting out from Elite over there, and we do ask that you leave all electronic devices inside this improbably large PC game box from 1997. Look out for all the mouse balls and serial cables underfoot. We’ve tried clearing them out, but they grow back at an alarming rate.

As custodians of this PC gaming corps d’elite, we must lay a few ground rules before allowing you into the great hall. The first pertains to timeliness: PC gaming history spans several decades and many of its most revered titles released during the 1990s, whose incredible tech breakthrough saw leaps forward in both fidelity and ideation. But let’s be real: even if you did decide to go and play the original 1993 version Syndicate after seeing it on this list, which you wouldn’t, getting it to run properly on modern hardware would be quite an undertaking. Therefore, older games must be both playable and still genuinely enjoyable to make the cut, not simply ‘important’.

Secondly: franchises. The industry’s tendency to iterate on its most popular names and ideas means good games are often built on the foundations of great ones – so even though the real innovation might have happened nine years ago, we’re still inclined to put the best overall experience on a pedestal. Often, that means the most recent.

With our methodology explained, we just need you to sign this waiver that absolves us from responsibility for any injuries incurred by falling CD-ROMs and any attempt from John Romero to make you his – well, you know, and we can now let you into the great hall.
