Jack Black seemingly confirms live-action Minecraft movie role with funny Instagram post

Is the Super Mario Bros Movie actor about to play Steve in the Minecraft flick?

Hey, did you know there’s a live-action Minecraft movie in the works?

I just found that out. Per reports, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen and Emma Myers will be in it, as will Jason Momoa. But who will play Steve, who gamers consider the main character of the mega-popular video game played by millions?

The answer, per Deadline, is the same guy who played the voice of Bowser in another video game movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie: Jack Black.

Beyond all of that, we don’t have a lot of information about the plot or what it’ll look like. But Black as Steve would be so fun.

Black posted this on Instagram, seemingly confirming the news:

Minecraft’s rarest death messages and how to get them

The rarest death messages in Minecraft require you to die in very strange and unique ways. Here are some of the funniest.

Most players will spend their time in Minecraft seeking out rare treasures like diamond or netherite, but for the veteran plays who have done all that countless times, there are yet rarer treasures to seek. A death message is the little descriptor of your death that appears.

You’ll often see things like “[Player] was slain a zombie” or “[Player] fell to their death”, but there are plenty of stranger ones that only appear in obscure scenarios. We’re going to run through some of the rarest death messages in Minecraft and how you can get them.

New Minecraft update fixes decade-old bug at last

The latest Minecraft update is pretty standard stuff for the PC game, but Mojang pointed out one special bug fix

The latest Minecraft update is pretty standard stuff for the PC game, but Mojang pointed out one special feature: a bug fix for an issue that’s plagued the game for 11 years. It sounds more dramatic than it actually is, though Mojang still felt it worth pointing out and even gave it a proper bug code in the patch notes, MC-1133.

The MC-1133 bug caused footstep sounds to vanish if the player approached the edge of a block. Apparently, the game thought players were walking in midair and removed all noise. You’ll be as noisy as you want from now on, and Mojang went even further and added some extra noise functions to underwater blocks. Any block you tread on in the inky depths will give off a muted version of the usual sound.

The rest of the Snapshot is pretty standard stuff. The Jukebox is in the Redstone tab now, you don’t need a Smithing Template to put item stacks in other slots anymore, and you can read the power signal of a chiseled bookshelf using a comparator.

The update also introduces new telemetry events and fixes a range of other bugs, including lag spikes and some issues with Sniffers.

Minecraft snapshots are only for the PC version, so unlike the crossover expansions that launch simultaneously, you’ll have to wait a bit for the update to roll out on consoles and mobile.

Dungeons and Dragons comes to Minecraft in new crossover expansion

A Minecraft and Dungeons and Dragons crossover is in the works, bringing the classic tabletop game to Mojang’s blocky builder

A Minecraft and Dungeons and Dragons crossover is in the works, bringing the tabletop RPG to Mojang’s blocky builder. Mojang and Everbloom Games announced the new expansion, called simply Minecraft x Dungeons and Dragons during a special presentation for the classic fantasy game, where Wizards of the Coast also said Minecraft monsters, including the Creeper, will make their official debut in an upcoming Dungeons and Dragons compendium.

While Mojang has included several Minecraft crossovers before, including a recent one starring Mega Man, this is the first collaboration with a tabletop game.

In the Minecraft Dungeons and Dragons expansion, players will choose their character class – paladin, rogue, wizard, or barbarian – and customize stats just as they would in a regular run of the tabletop game. The expansion is approximately 10 hours long and includes locations such as Candlekeep and Icewind Dale.

Each class has a unique set of custom-made abilities and can equip gear that augments their skills as they face off against iconic enemies, such as mindflayers and mimics, with a few new ones, like an evil cube-shaped blob of jelly, thrown in for good measure.

The Dungeons and Dragons movie releases in theaters on March 31, 2023, though there’s no release date for either Minecraft collaboration yet.

New Minecraft DLC adds a classic retro game to the sandbox builder

The new Mega Man Minecraft DLC adds Mega Man X characters, bosses, and stages to Mojang’s sandbox builder, and it’s out now

There’s a new Mega Man Minecraft DLC that adds Mega Man X characters, bosses, and stages to Mojang’s sandbox builder, and it’s out now. The DLC puts you in the blocky shoes of Mega Man X and recreates some of the SNES classic’s most iconic moments recreated in blocky 3D, including levels rebuilt from the original with a twist and even a hub space where you can spend some time with Zero.

The twist is that each of the expansion’s stages will switch periodically between 3D sidescrolling and first-person, similar to what Capcom experimented with in Mega Man Legends. It supports multiplayer, so you can team up with friends if you need a helping hand.

You’ll hunt down four Mavericks on your journey, Sting Chameleon, Storm Eagle, Armored Armadillo, and Chill Penguin, before raiding Sigma’s multi-level fortress and taking down the big bad in a final fight.

The DLC also reimagines the Mega Man X soundtrack and adds 14 skins of characters from the game, including X himself, of course, and Dr. Wily and Dr. Cain.

The Mega Man X Minecraft DLC is available for purchase for 1,340 Minecoins, or roughly $10, from the Minecraft Marketplace, and it works with any up-to-date version of Minecraft Bedrock on console and PC.

Mojang announces Minecraft Legends release date during Xbox showcase

Mojang announced the Minecraft Legends release date alongside a brief overview of the RTS game’s PvP mode during the first Developer_Direct

Mojang announced the Minecraft Legends release date alongside a brief overview of the RTS game’s PvP mode during Xbox’s first Developer_Direct. Minecraft Legends will release on April 18, 2023, for all modern platforms except mobile devices.

The news came at the end of a brief look at Minecraft Legends’ co-op mode, where two teams of four players each see who can capture the other’s base first. While you can technically do whatever you want, Minecraft Legends encourages cooperation and smart division of labor. You share an army and resources, so no one wins if you try hogging it all or doing everything yourself.

One player may stay back and build a devious base with traps and maze-like walls, while another could venture forth and scout important resources or start building a secret fort to launch redstone projectiles at your foes.

While the enemy base is your main target, you’ll also have to contend with Piglins and other enemy mobs who don’t really care who wins. They just want to destroy everything they see.

Each game features a procedurally generated map, just like regular Minecraft, so no two PvP sessions will be the same.

Expect more from Mojang in the lead-up to Minecraft Legends’ April release date.

An Xbox and Bethesda showcase is coming soon – without Starfield

A new Xbox Bethesda showcase is set for late January, but Starfield isn’t among the upcoming Xbox games planned for the presentation

A new Xbox and Bethesda showcase called the Developer_Direct is scheduled to air on Jan. 25, 2023, at 3 p.m. ET, Xbox announced in an Xbox Wire post. If you’re hoping for some Starfield news after nearly a year since Bethesda released the last set of information, though, you’re in for a bit of a disappointment.

Xbox said there will be no Starfield news during the Developer_Direct. Instead, the team plans on hosting a standalone showcase all about Starfield – eventually. There’s no indication when the Starfield showcase might be just yet.

The Developers_Direct focuses on upcoming Xbox games such as Redfall, the vampire-hunting FPS game from Arkane, along with Minecraft Legends, Forza Motorsport, and The Elder Scrolls Online’s substantial new update planned for later in 2023.

Expect to see new Redfall footage – the first Arkane has shown in months – with more details on boss encounters, customization, and combat. There’s also new gameplay from Forza Motorsport and a deep dive into the PvP elements of Minecraft Legends’, the real-time strategy Minecraft spinoff set to launch on all platforms in the first half of 2023.

None of the games planned for the Developer_Direct has a firm release date yet. However, between rumors of Redfall launching in spring and the complete absence of any Xbox games such as Avowed that are still early in development, it seems Xbox is taking a leaf from Nintendo’s Direct showcases and only focusing on the next few months of releases.

This Genshin Impact Minecraft mashup needs to be a real mod

One keen Genshin Impact fan recreated some of the RPG’s best characters in Minecraft, and we just wish it were playable

Genshin Impact and Minecraft seem like two completely separate experiences at first glance, but animator and YouTuber Faris Sayyaf decided the two should be more compatible. They created a two-minute-long mashup of Genshin Impact characters using their skills in Minecraft that found its way to Genshin Impact Twitter as a few thousand hopefuls thought it was an actual mod in the works.

It isn’t, and that’s a shame because it just looks so perfect.

The animated short starts with recent addition Tighnari using his signature Tanglevine burst to ensnare enemies in forest energy, but Sayyaf goes a step further. This wasn’t just your average Minecraft mob, though. It was a full-blown Withering Zone, and the animation treats us to a lovely segment where the forest springs back into lush, green life afterward.

What follows is a who’s who of Genshin Impact favorites. Zhongli shows up and turns his foes into stone. Fischl and her night raven soar across the field, zapping Creepers as they go. Dori the mighty merchant summons her jinni companion, and Kazuha even creates his Autumn Wind field complete with swirling leaves.

Check it out on their YouTube page.

This isn’t Sayyaf’s first crack at merging Genshin Impact with Minecraft. In 2021, they made a video themed after Genshin Impact’s opening segment, using Minecraft’s ray tracing to make the Traveler’s arrival in Teyvat stand out even more.

Whether any other clever creators decide to bring this vision to life in mod form, though, we can only hope.

Minecraft snapshot 22w44a: Ender Dragon spawners

Minecraft’s newest snapshot brings with it some new spawn eggs that have been missing for a long time.

The third Minecraft snapshot for version 1.9.3 is here, and it’s made a couple of additions that should’ve been in the game a long time ago. This brings the third (and hopefully final) round of changes to the creative inventory, as well as adding the game’s most destructive bosses as spawn eggs, including a few tweaks to how spawners work that custom map creators will appreciate.

If you want to know what’s in the previous snapshots, then you can check out our summaries of snapshot 22w42a and snapshot 22w43a.

Mojang celebrates Minecraft Halloween with curated maps and skins

Minecraft Halloween celebrations include the first Minecraft Dungeons skin pack that lets you dress your heroes like… well, heroes

‘Tis the season for jumps and scares, and Mojang is celebrating Minecraft Halloween with a sizeable curated collection of fright-filled maps, skins, and more called Minecraft Halloween Spooky Season, so you can dress like a hero without having to find Minecraft‘s capes. Mojang is also offering some Minecraft Dungeons-inspired character creation items – the Hungriest Horror armor set and the Cloaked Skull Armor set, the latter of which is available for free.

The rest of the collection on the Minecraft Marketplace centers on fan-favorite maps from Minecraft creators, such as the aptly named Scariest Map Ever. This creation from Sapphire Studios plunges you into a netherworld nightmare as you stumble in the darkness, evade the unseen terrors that stalk just out of sight, and try to make it out alive.

Another popular choice that (probably) won’t keep you up at night is Haunted Park from Everbloom Games. This map features varied locales and activities, including a haunted house and a frightful haycart ride, but those looking for more serious scares can check out the abandoned fields, where plenty of bumps in the night lie in wait.

Also new for scary season is the first Minecraft Dungeons hero skin pack. This new pack lets you dress your Minecraft hero as your favorite Minecraft Dungeons hero, with picks representing Hal, Adrienne, and 11 other skins. Unlike the Halloween-themed maps that cost Mine Coins, the Minecraft Dungeons skin pack is completely free.
