Can this rookie become the Commanders No. 3 quarterback?

Do the Commanders have something in undrafted quarterback Tim DeMorat?

Who will be Washington’s third-string quarterback in 2023?

Yesterday, Commanders Wire told of current No. 3 quarterback and former Georgia Bulldog Jake Fromm.

In the recent NFL draft many thought somewhere in rounds 3-7, Washington would select a quarterback. However, the Commanders did not go the quarterback route. Soon following the draft they did sign undrafted free-agent quarterback Tim DeMorat.

“Who in the world is Tim DeMorat?” you ask.

Prior to the draft, doing some research on who might be a reasonable Day 3 QB selection, I found one reliable website which listed 18 quarterbacks who could be drafted. You guessed it, Tim DeMorat did not make the list of 18 quarterbacks.

So, honestly, when I read they had signed DeMorat out of Fordham, I confess I did not know the name, knew nothing about him.

Going online to locate his stats for the 2022 season at Fordham, I found DeMorat completed 326 of his 499 passes (65.3%) for 4,891 yards. So I thought, “Hey, he attempted nearly 500 passes in one season, so he has some experience.”

When I read the next stat line I must have done a double-take. More accurately, my jaw probably dropped halfway to the floor. You see, DeMorat passed for 56 touchdowns last season with only 10 interceptions. He “averaged” 407.58 passing yards a game.

He liked to move the ball around, apparently. He had five receivers with more than 30 receptions and three who had more than 10 touchdown receptions.

DeMorat stands 6-foot-4, weighing 220. He appears to be more of a drop-back passer. He passed for 6 touchdowns in three games in 2022. In four games he tossed five touchdowns, while in three games he passed for four touchdowns.

Yes, Commanders Wire will freely admit he was playing against Patriot League defenses. Yet, on the other side of the coin, he was also playing with Patriot League offensive players. For what it is worth, he was the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week nine times in 2022.

Can he play? Can he unseat Jake Fromm as the No. 3 quarterback for the Commanders? We have no idea. The Coaching Staff, especially new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy will be watching and evaluating during the Rookie Minicamp (May 11-13).

Notre Dame adds transfer guard Anna DeWolfe from Fordham

The Irish get a big scorer.

Notre Dame has made its first addition via the transfer portal of the offseason. That addition is former Fordham guard [autotag]Anna DeWolfe[/autotag]. DeWolfe will play out her college eligibility with the Irish after four seasons with the Rams. She’ll be a big scoring addition, too.

DeWolfe 1,883 points at Fordham rank eighth all-time in the Atlantic 10. She was the conference player of the year in 2021 and has been on the past three all-conference first teams. During her collegiate career, she has averaged 17.0 points a game, which ranks ninth in conference history. She led the conference in scoring in 2021 (20.8) and was second in 2022 (17.8) and 2023 (18.4).

DeWolfe is no stranger to Notre Dame. Her first collegiate game in November 2019 was a 60-55 Irish win in which she scored 10 points in 37 minutes. The Irish beat the Rams again, 71-56 , two Novembers later. DeWolfe also scored 10 points in that game but shot 4 of 17 from the field.

The Irish have a talented roster already, but they always could use some reinforcements. This is a big one. The only question is how well her game will translate against tougher competition in the ACC.

Kevin Decker hired as Old Dominion’s offensive coordinator

Kevin Decker hired as Old Dominion’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Old Dominion hired Kevin Decker as its offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Decker served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fordham from 2019-22.

Decker installed Josh Heupel’s offense during Fordham’s downtime during the coronavirus shutdown. In 2022, Fordham’s quarterback Tim DeMorat led the Football Championship Subdivision in passing yards (4,891). The Rams averaged 608.9 yards per game in 2022.

“In 2019 we would study it, but wouldn’t run it,” Decker told Vols Wire of studying and installing Heupel’s offense at Fordham. “Then COVID happened and we were still able to get in 10 practices in the fall without a season. I said this is an opportune time to get this stuff on film and see how it looks. It’s really different, but the biggest thing to stress to your guys is to don’t overthink it, run fast and make full speed decisions, you’re always right and run to green grass — that’s it. Our kids really loved it, and because it allowed them to play fast and to play without thinking.

“We kind of made the full blown adjustments and we obviously reaped the benefits with some success this year. I love it, and as a play-caller, when you spread a team out wide, you really get to see what their attention is.”

Old Dominion head coach Ricky Rahne discussed hiring Decker and Alex Huettel as offensive line coach from Fordham.

“I am extremely excited to add both Kevin and Alex,” Rahne said in a press release. “The offensive production and excitement that these hires bring to the 757 will continue to push this program to the next level.”

Josh Heupel’s offense projected to compete for national championship in FBS, FCS playoffs

Josh Heupel’s offense projected to compete for a national championship in the FBS and FCS playoffs.

Josh Heupel’s offense is transforming the sport of college football in the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision.

Tennessee has played one less game than most FBS teams due to having an open date in Week 5. The Vols’ offense under Heupel ranks first nationally in yards per game (551) in the FBS.

Tennessee and Heupel’s entire statistics and where they currently rank nationally can be viewed here.

In the FCS, Fordham ranks first in the following categories:

Total points: 344 (First in FCS)

Points per game: 49.1 (First in FCS)

Total yards: 4,347 (First in FCS)

Total yards per game: 621.0 (First in FCS)

Yards per play: 8.17 (First in FCS)

Passing yards: 3,058 (First in FCS)

Passing yards per game: 436.9 (First in FCS)

Passing touchdowns: 34 (First in FCS)

Fordham has experienced offensive success under offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kevin Decker and tight ends coach David Weeks.

Weeks was brought in to help install Heupel’s offense at Fordham. He has served as the Rams’ tight ends coach from 2021-22.

Weeks came to Fordham after serving as a student assistant quarterbacks coach from 2018-19 at UCF under Heupel. At UCF under Heupel, Weeks was responsible for helping provide input and breaking down opponent and self-scout film, creating cutups of opponents and self-scout specific film, creating weekly post-game packets and charts, a weekly red zone report, and drawing weekly installs.

Both Tennessee and Fordham’s success offensively and winning games have resulted in the two programs receiving projections to play in the College Football Playoff and the FCS playoffs.

The Vols (6-0, 3-0 SEC) have recorded four top 25 wins through six games, while Fordham (6-1, 2-0 Patriot League) has scored 40-plus points in every contest this season. Fordham’s only loss this season took place Sept. 24 against FBS, Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio. Ohio defeated the Rams, 59-52.

Below are recent playoff projections for Tennessee and Fordham.

Fordham has top FCS offense after installing Josh Heupel’s scheme

A look at how Fordham has the top FCS offense after installing Josh Heupel’s scheme.

Fordham (6-1, 2-0 Patriot League) enters its open date during the 2022 season in Week 8.

Fordham’s only loss this season took place Sept. 24 against FBS, Mid-American Conference opponent Ohio. Ohio defeated the Rams, 59-52.

Fordham plays in the Patriot League at the Football Championship Subdivision level.

The Rams are in year two of heavily installing Josh Heupel’s offensive scheme.

The Rams have scored 40-plus points in all seven contests this season. Fordham has totaled 344 points, while averaging 49.1 points per game.

Offensive coordinator Kevin Decker and the Rams have totaled 4,373 yards (3,058 passing, 1,315 rushing) entering its open date.

Decker has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fordham since 2019.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Fordham did not play games in 2020. The Rams played three games during an abbreviated spring 2021 season. Fordham went 6-5 in a traditional fall campaign in 2021.

The coronavirus pandemic allowed time for Decker to install a new offense. Decker, a 2012 New Hampshire graduate where he was the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Year and a finalist for the Walter Payton Award in 2011 as a quarterback, installed Josh Heupel’s offense during Fordham’s downtime.

“The goal of this whole thing, is I love the spacing aspect,” Decker told Vols Wire following the 2021 fall season. “I think it puts your players in the best possible situation, to go and do what they do, and that’s to make plays. I absolutely love it.

“Basically in 2019 we were not doing this. Then our spring covid year we only played three games, we dabbled in it. We started calling some of that stuff, but we were maybe 20 percent of our offense was wide splits — but I want to live in the big splits.”

The 2022 season is David Weeks second as a position coach with Fordham.

Weeks was brought in to help install Heupel’s offense. He was hired as a quality control coach in 2020 and was elevated to tight ends coach in 2021.

“It really came from Weeks who works for us now,” Decker said of Fordham’s offense. “He is our tight ends coach. He was a student assistant at UCF with Josh Heupel.

“I would just be messing around with him in the office late at night to draw up some of this stuff that Heupel is doing down there. I was like, ‘Wow this actually is really, really good stuff’.”

Decker further detailed how the coronavirus pandemic allowed time to install Heupel’s offense at Fordham, everything from wide splits, tempo, rubs, verticals, stack receivers and the use of H-backs.

“In 2019 we would study it, but wouldn’t run it,” Decker said of Heupel’s offense.

“We kind of made the full blown adjustments and we obviously reaped the benefits with some success (in 2021). I love it, and as a play-caller, when you spread a team out wide, you really get to see what their attention is.”

Below is a look at Fordham’s offensive production by the numbers through seven games this season as the Rams have an open date this week. Like Heupel and Tennessee in the FBS, Fordham is in year two of an install with the same scheme and is at the top of many FCS offensive categories.

Ohio vs Fordham Game Preview

Why Fordham Will Win

The Rams have started strong.

The defense has been a tad lacking, but the offense has more than made up for it with the best passing game in the FCS. It’s averaging 320 yards per game, Tim DeMorat has thrown 16 touchdowns in three games, and the veteran receivers are all getting a taste.

Let’s just say the Ohio defense is having problems against the pass.

Florida Atlantic, Penn State, and Iowa State all went for 300 yards against the third-worst pass defense in college football.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Ohio Will Win

Yeah, Ohio gives up 334 passing yards per game. Fordham gives up 320.

The Rams are winning because they can crank out an FCS best 620 yards of total O a game, but Ohio has the ability to move the ball, too.

No, it couldn’t get going on the road against Penn State or Iowa State, but it rolled against Florida Atlantic.

And no, Ohio’s defense – as mediocre as it is – isn’t Wagner, Monmouth, or Albany.

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a fun firefight.

Fordham will keep on firing, but it’ll give up yards and points just as fast.

The Bobcats will be able to do just a bit more offensively, the running game will work this week, and the defense will come up with the second half stops the the Rams won’t.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Fordham vs George Mason Game Preview, Atlantic 10 Tournament

Why Fordham Will Win

The Rams aren’t going to come out hand hang 85 on the board unless everything goes right, but they’re going to take plenty of threes, do a good job at guarding on the outside, and they’re going to come up with plenty of rebounds.

They do have a bit of a scoring punch – they actually did hang 85 on UMass a few days ago – and there won’t be too much of a concern with the George Mason defense that doesn’t force mistakes and hasn’t been anything special to close out the regular season.

But …

– Latest Polls AP | Coaches

Why George Mason Will Win

The Patriots will make a ton of threes.

They might not have the defense to hold up on the inside, and they tend to lose when they have to push the offense, but they’ve hit 21 threes over the last two games and will keep on bombing away throughout.

They lost the first game to Fordham 50-47 on the road, but they were way off from outside and never got to the free throw line. With this team, though, it’s all about the threes.

Hit ten of them, and good things happen. But …

Fordham vs George Mason: What’s Going To Happen

Duh, of course teams do well when they make a whole lot of threes, but George Mason is 9-5 when it hits ten or more threes and 5-10 when it doesn’t.

Fordham has allowed just three teams to hit double-digit threes.

Notre Dame adds another PWO defender to their 2022 recruiting class

Another W over the Wolverines

It seemed like the Irish were going to have a very quiet late signing period but that all changed this evening. Florida defensive athlete Tre Reader announced his intentions to join the Notre Dame football team as a preferred walk-on.

The six-foot-two-inch and 210-pound Reader will either grown into a linebacker or a defensive end, depending on how his body fills out over the next few years. He chose the Irish over offers from Columbia, Fordham and Stetson while also having an opportunity to walk-on at Michigan as well.

Any time the Irish beat the Wolverines it is a win and Reader could develop into a contributor a few years down the road.

Kevin Decker discusses installing Josh Heupel’s offense at Fordham

A look at how Josh Heupel’s offense has reached Bronx, New York. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Kevin Decker discusses installing Josh Heupel’s offense at Fordham.

Kevin Decker has served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Fordham since 2019.

‘Josh Heupel’s Offense’ e-book now available

Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez faces a tough task vs. OU’s pass rush

Nebraska’s Adrian Martinez is one of the most pressured quarterbacks in the Power Five, which is something Oklahoma can take advantage of this Saturday.

The Oklahoma Sooners are well into their preparation for a high noon showdown with a storied old foe. The Nebraska Cornhuskers will make the trip from Lincoln, Nebraska to take on Lincoln Riley and his third-ranked Sooners team. The game marks the first time they would have played since the 2010 Big 12 Championship game. These programs have taken quite a turn in opposite directions since Nebraska’s days of dominating college football. Nebraska is reeling and their coach, players, and fans will be hoping for the unthinkable to happen on Saturday.

In order for Nebraska to have any shot on Saturday, it will be because Adrian Martinez played lights-out football. However, if it is to get done, it won’t be easy.

A quarterback’s worst nightmare is pressure. Martinez has faced pressure in abundance, and the defensive line that Oklahoma will line up is one of the best in the country. Prior to Saturday’s game Adrian Martinez is one of the most pressured quarterbacks in the country:

  • He is the most pressured quarterback in the Power Five.
  • Martinez’s 45.7% pressure rate is the fourth-highest among quarterbacks in the Power Five with at least 22 dropbacks.

Context is key and will tell a bigger picture. These numbers seem high and you would be absolutely correct in doing so. It’s only exacerbated by the fact that Nebraska has only played Illinois, Fordham, and Buffalo through three games. A fellow Big 10 foe, an FCS school, and a pretty solid team in Buffalo from the MAC.

Those are hardly a Murderers’ Row of pass-rushing opponents. Nebraska’s offensive line has struggled to keep clean pockets against that caliber of opponent. How will they manage facing a potential first-round draft pick in Nik Bonitto and another likely top 100 draft choice in Perrion Winfrey? They are second and first respectively in pressures in the Big 12.

Nebraska’s opening game offensive line to start the season is young but not as young as it seems. They entered with 47 combined starts, including five players who had started at least one game. But much like playing the likes of Ohio State in the Big 10, this is a different animal entirely and even more so with the outside weight of this being a rivalry game on the road.

OU has the star power and the depth to continue to make things chaotic in the pocket for Martinez. He’s going to bail from the pocket and run. He leads the nation in rushing yards as a QB, which is a by-product of their offensive system but also because he has no time to sit and make reads to throw the ball.

An undervalued aspect of pressure stats and examining the relationship that pressure and coverage share. Martinez has been pressured but with that have the Cornhuskers not tried getting the ball out faster to offset the rush? And if they have, are the Nebraska receivers able to get open?

The Sooners may be down a few starters in their secondary so that may also be something to watch as Nebraska likely opts for quick-hitting routes to offset the outside pressure from Nik Bonitto and Isaiah Thomas while Jalen Redmond, Perrion Winfrey, Joshua Ellison, and more attempt to collapse the pocket.

Martinez and the Nebraska offensive linemen have a massive obstacle to overcome if they want to put up enough points to try and spring an upset.

Only time will tell if they can do it.
