Cowboys News: 2020 breakout candidates, refs may struggle out box with no help

Dallas Cowboys news and notes for July 31, 2020.

The NFL was ready to implement serious changes in the way on-field officials communicated with the replay officials, but without a preseason to test the league has ended that experiment before it got started/

The Dallas Cowboys have a chance to have one of the best records in the league in 2020, but it could depend on a few players have their breakout seasons. Two players to watch who could become household names include safety Xavier Woods and cornerback Chidobe Auzie. Another young corner, Trevon Diggs, spent the summer competing with his all-pro brother, and many are placing high expectations on the Alabama product. Plus, the latest from Stephen Jones regarding the future of Dak Prescott and the Cowboys.

Jags ranked as the No. 23 most valuable NFL franchise

The Jags found themselves valued at more than the Saints and a few other notable teams on Forbes latest listing of most valuable franchises.

Forbes released their annual rankings of the most valuable franchises in sports Friday.

According to Cody Benjamin of CBSSports.com, the Jacksonville Jaguars rank at the No. 23 position of most valuable NFL teams currently. The Jaguars have a current valuation of approximately $2.33 billion, which is also good for No. 44 in all of the major sports leagues including soccer franchises. The Jags also ranked in the same position last year when Forbes released their 2019 rankings.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan has been in charge of the team since 2012 when he bought the franchise for $770 million from longtime owner and the driving force behind Jacksonville’s inception into the NFL in Wayne Weaver. The team at the time was worth about $725 million.

The Jags position ranks above a few prominent and more successful franchises in the New Orleans Saints (No. 25, $2.28 billion), the Kansas City Chiefs (No. 24, $2.30 billion), and also the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (No. 27, $2.2 billion), all of whom have won a Super Bowl in their franchise’s history. As far as worldwide franchises, the Jaguars ranked higher than Arsenal of the English Premier League (No. 47, $2.27 billion) and the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball (No. 49, $2.2 billion).

Khan and the Jaguars would hope to see that number increase throughout the next few years as the stadium continues to see many additions to enhance the fan experience. The team also continues to have a strong influence on the England fanbase as well thus increasing the revenue and branding potential of the team.

Cowboys still richest sports franchise in the history of earth

The Cowboys are once again the most valuable sports franchise in the whole world.

The Dallas Cowboys remain the most powerful sports franchise in the world. No, this isn’t bias shining through, it’s actually backed up by the numbers.

Forbes recently released their annual assessment of the world’s most valuable sport franchises, and for the fifth straight year the Cowboys took home the top spot. The Cowboys are now up to being worth of $5.5 billion, and are up a whole $1.4 billion on the next most valuable NFL, the New England Patriots, who come in at No. 7 on the ranking.

The top five are as follows:

Team Worth
1. Dallas Cowboys (NFL) $5.5 billion
2. New York Yankees (MLB) $5 billion
3. New York Knicks (NBA) $4.6 billion
4. Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) $4.4 billion
5. Golden State Warriors (NBA) $4.3 billion

The NFL continues to dominate the list, as 27 of the top 50 were American football franchises.

The last time the Cowboys weren’t atop this list was 2015, when they were second behind Real Madrid, and worth a measly $3.2 billion, but they have nearly doubled in value in the years since to reach their new mark.

This is certainly a hit to the crowd that believes Dallas is no longer “America’s Team,” as the Cowboys are the only NFL team in the top six franchises, and as mentioned earlier, it’s the fifth straight year with the Cowboys on top. Their games also continue to dominate the ratings market when they are on national television; which is quite often.

Jerry Jones investment of $150 million in 1989 looks better and better with every year that passes.

Forbes ranks Seattle Seahawks 29th-most valuable sports team

Forbes has ranked the Seattle Seahawks as the 29th-most valuable sports team in the world in 2020.

“Fans are stuck at home, seasons are at risk and revenue is plummeting,” the official Forbes account tweeted Friday morning. “Things might seem terrible for professional sports, but amazingly most of the world’s top franchises are worth more this year than last.”

The annual ranking of the world’s most valuable sports teams has been released and Forbes has named the Seattle Seahawks No. 29 on the list with an estimated value of $2.78 billion.

The Seahawks, now owned by the Paul G. Allen Trust, were initially purchased by Allen in 1997 for a mere $194,000,000.

The Dallas Cowboys earned the top spot in Forbes’ rankings for 2020 (for the fifth consecutive year) at $5.5 billion with the New York Yankees landing a close runner-up at $5 billion.

The NFL was the clear leader as far as the number of teams to make the list this year at 27. The NBA was a distant second with just nine teams named.

Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner making big plays off the field

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is making big plays off the field, now investing in Fuse Venture Partners.

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is clearly one of the best in the game but it’s his off-field plays that are recently garnering him the most attention.

This week, Wagner joined the team at Fuse Venture Partners, where he will work alongside former Microsoft executive John Connors and former Amazon executive Satbir Khanuja. The investment firm will focus on developing software for e-commerce companies.

This move is hardly Wagner’s first foray into the business world – he has also invested in Denali Therapeutics and the Cultural Leadership Fund, not to mention having acted as his own agent to negotiate his recent contract extension.

“If I can be a better businessman than I am a football player, that would be pretty successful, because the bar is set pretty high,” Wagner told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler. “I just want to be someone that a football player can look at and say this guy dominated on the field and was able to transition and do just as well. I feel we need more of that.”

Hopefully, Wagner will get his chance to shine this season, but if there is no football, he’ll find a way to keep himself in business.

Why Seahawk Russell Wilson left off Forbes highest-paid athletes list

Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson ranked No. 6 in Forbes’ highest-paid athletes of 2019 – here’s why he has fallen off the list in 2020.

Forbes recently came out with their list of the world’s highest-paid athletes and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is no longer on the list.

A total of 31 NFL players made the cut – including Seahawks linebacker  Bobby Wagner – based on a culmination of salaries, bonuses, endorsements, etc.

Here’s Forbes’ explanation for Wilson’s dive in 2020.

“Russell Wilson had the biggest fall,” writes Kurt Badenhausen. “The Seattle Seahawks signal caller ranked No. 6 last year with $80 million, thanks to a blockbuster April 2019 deal that included a $65 million signing bonus, but was a no-show in 2020, with earnings of $15 million, including $10 million off the field. Seattle deferred $35 million of the bonus to 2020, but we credited the QB with the full $65 million on the 2019 list of top earners.”

Forbes listed Wagner at No. 74 on the list with 2020 earnings slated at $25 million as of May 22. $500,000 of that total comes as a result of his sponsorship deals with BodyArmor and Nike.

Stephen Curry lands in top-10 on Forbes 2020 highest-paid athlete list

Golden State’s two-time Most Valuable Player was one of three NBA players to be named in the top-10 of Forbes highest-paid athletes in the world list.

Although Stephen Curry has been limited to only a handful of games due to injuries this season, the two-time Most Valuable Player landed in the top-10 on Forbes 2020 highest-paid athletes in the world list.

The Golden State point guard came in at No. 6 on the list, the second-highest NBA player behind only LeBron James (No. 5). Curry’s former Golden State teammate Kevin Durant was the third NBA player named in the top-10, coming in at No. 7.

Tennis athlete Roger Federer topped the list with international soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi rounding out the top three spots.

According to Forbes, Curry totaled $74.4 million, with $30.4 million coming from his salary and the rest of the $44 million coming in from endorsements. Forbes lists Under Armour, Chase, Fanatics and Callaway Golf as some of Curry’s sponsors.

Curry’s fellow Splash Brother Klay Thompson ranked at No. 28 on the list. Former Warrior D’Angelo Russell was also named at No. 63.

Thirty fives basketball players were represented on the list — the most out of any sport.

Tyson Fury top boxer on Forbes’ highest paid athletes list at No. 11

Four boxers made the Forbes’ list of highest paid athletes for 2020, led by No. 11 Tyson Fury.

Four boxers are among Forbes’ Top 100 highest paid athletes for 2020.

Tyson Fury was No. 11 and fellow heavyweights Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder were Nos. 19 and 20. MMA star Conor McGregor was No. 16. Canelo Alvarez, at No. 30, was the only other boxer or mixed martial artist in the Top 100.

Tennis player Roger Federer was No. 1.

Boxing/MMA (ranked together) had five athletes in the Top 100, making it the fifth highest-rated sport. Basketball had 35 in the Top 100, American football 31.

The earnings period runs from June 1, 2019 and June 1, 2020.

Here are the earnings of the five combat sports athletes on the list:

  • Fury – $57 million ($50 million in purses and $7 million in endorsements).
  • McGregor – $48 million ($32 million in purses and $16 million in endorsements).
  • Joshua – $47 million ($36 million in purses and $11 million in endorsements).
  • Wilder – $46.5 million ($46 million in purses and $500,000 in endorsements).
  • Alvarez – $37 million ($35 million in purses and $2 million in endorsements).

Federer earned a total of $106.3 million, $6.3 million in winnings and $100 million in endorsements. Cristiano Ronaldo ($105 million), Lionel Messi ($104 million), Neymar ($95.5) and LeBron James ($88.2 million) round out the Top 5.

The 100 highest paid athletes earned a total of $3.6 billion, 9% below the 2019 total.

The coronavirus pandemic has shut down most sports, which obviously impacts earnings. For example, only one baseball player (Clayton Kershaw) appears in the Top 100, compared to 15 in 2019, as the start of the season has been postponed.

Some boxers also have missed out on expected paydays. For example, Alvarez would’ve fought earlier this month.

4 Falcons players make Forbes’ top 100 highest-paid athletes

Four Falcons players made the Forbes top 100 highest-paid athletes list.

The tone of the Atlanta Falcons’ 2020 offseason has been different than in previous years under general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Limited cap space has forced the team’s hand in cutting veterans Devonta Freeman and Desmond Trufant, while letting free agents De’Vondre Campbell, Austin Hooper and Vic Beasley sign elsewhere.

That’s simply the price this organization must pay for paying its top players, though. It’s hard to blame Dimitroff for extending Matt Ryan, Julio Jones and Grady Jarrett.

As pointed out by Touchdown Wire, 31 NFL players made Forbes’ top 100 highest-paid athletes of 2020, including four Falcons. Ryan, Jones, Jarrett and free agent Dante Fowler Jr. are each set to earn big money in 2020. Let’s look at what TD Wire’s Barry Werner had to say about Atlanta’s highest rollers.

On Fowler. (No. 81):

Dante Fowler signed a three-year, $48 million contract as a free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in March 2020. This marks his third NFL team as he has been with the Jaguars and Rams. His earnings in 2020 will be $24.2M.

On Ryan (No. 47):

Longtime Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan is riding a long-term contract that will see him earn $24M in salary this year. Add in another $5.5M in endorsements and Ryan is at $29.5M.

On Jarrett (No. 37):

Atlanta’s Grady Jarrett plays every play ferociously and the Falcons love having him in their nest. The defensive lineman weighs in at $33.1M, with almost all of it coming from his NFL contract.

On Julio Jones (No. 26):

Atlanta’s star wideout Julio Jones was a great catch, and the Falcons are paying him as such. Jones will carry $37.5M from the team and another $3M in endorsements, putting him at $40.5M.

It’s tough to remain competitive with so many many big contracts, but the Falcons have the talent to make a run this year if they can avoid another slow start.

Eagles QB Carson Wentz lands in the top-10 of Forbes Highest Paid athletes

Carson Wentz lands in the top-10 of Forbes Highest Paid athletes

Carson Wentz is the unquestioned leader of the Philadelphia Eagles, a top-10 quarterback, and thanks to a huge new contract extension, one of the world’s highest-paid athletes.

In a new ranking from Forbes, the Eagles star signal-caller landed at No. 10 on the list of highest-paid athletes for 2020.

Wentz was joined in the top-10 by the Vikings Kirk Cousins who landed at No. 9 on the list.

Jared Goff, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft was No. 15 on the list and those three were the only NFL players in the top-20.

Wentz and the Eagles agreed to a massive contract extension last summer worth $128 million over four years.

In the deal, Wentz received a $16.4 million signing bonus, as well as a $30 million option bonus paid to him in March 2020.

Wentz has endorsement deals with Nike, NRG, Bobcat, Amazon, Sanford Health, Bose, Scheels, and BlackRidge Bank per Forbes.

Wentz’s salary cap number jumps from $18.7 million in 2020 to more than $34 million in 2021 and stays above $31.2 million each of the subsequent three years, per OvertheCap.
