Previewing Saturday’s Florida State at Florida college football matchup, with NCAA football betting odds, picks and best bets

The Florida State Seminoles (6-5) will take on the Florida Gators (9-2) this weekend in an ACC-SEC clash at The Swamp in Gainesville. Kickoff from Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.

Florida State at Florida: Three things you need to know

1. Florida State’s leading rusher, Cam Akers, is expected to return on Saturday after missing last week’s game against Alabama State with an unspecified injury. He has 1,042 yards and 13 touchdowns this season.

2. Florida has won back-to-back games in dominant fashion after losing two of its previous three games. The Gators beat Missouri 23-6 two weeks ago after blowing out Vanderbilt 56-0 the week before.

3. Florida has won six games at home this season while Florida State’s win at Boston College ended a six-game road losing streak dating back to last season.

Florida 30, Florida State 17

Moneyline (ML)

Florida is the heavy favorite in this matchup with the game on home turf. As a result, the -1000 moneyline on the Gators is steep and not worth betting — even though Florida should come away victorious.

The Gators are just 3-7 against the Seminoles in their last 10 meetings and 1-5 in the last six.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Florida to win would return a profit of $1.

Against the Spread (ATS)

The Gators enter as 17.5-point favorites, which isn’t surprising given how much better they’ve been this season. Florida State has limped through a disappointing campaign, but the Seminoles have scored 87 points in their last two games, so if they can score enough, it’ll be tough for Florida to cover the spread.

Not to mention, Florida State is 6-3 ATS in its last nine games against the Gators. Bet the SEMINOLES (+17.5, -106) to cover the spread.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is 53.5 in this matchup and both teams come in hot offensively. The Gators defense has been dominant this season, and in the last 19 games between these two teams, the total has gone under 14 times.

Bet the UNDER 53.5 (-106) on Saturday because it’ll be tough for Florida State to get much going offensively.

CFP Rankings: Cotton Bowl Dream Dead for Notre Dame

Perhaps both Ohio State and Minnesota win Saturday, handing Michigan and Wisconsin their third losses of the year, but after that it gets tricky.

Although no games were played Tuesday night Notre Dame saw their hopes of ending their season in the Cotton Bowl for a second year in a row come to an unofficial end.

As the College Football Playoff rankings were released Tuesday night, Notre Dame remained at number 16 in the country, still the lowest of any two-loss power-five teams and also still behind three-loss Auburn.

So as it sits with No. 16 Notre Dame having just one game remaining against an under-500 Stanford team that won’t count for much, even if it does end with a 50 point win for the Irish.

The problem is that Notre Dame has already routed better teams than Stanford in recent weeks and gained no ground.

Unless you can figure out a way that Notre Dame jumps six teams and gets into the top-ten, then they’re headed to Orlando for the Camping World Bowl against a Big XII team.

With the games remaining it’s hard to find six losses that are going to benefit Notre Dame.

Auburn losing to Alabama would probably finally get the Irish ahead of the currently three-loss Tigers.

Perhaps both Ohio State and Minnesota win Saturday, handing Michigan and Wisconsin their third losses of the year, but after that it gets tricky.

Kansas over Baylor or Rutgers over Penn State?  No help coming in either of those.

Same pretty much going for Colorado’s chances against Utah, Florida State’s to upset Florida.

Not only would Notre Dame need one of those to happen, they’d need three of the last four listed in order to have a chance, couple with those Auburn, Michigan and Wisconsin losses listed above.

As you can tell the chances at the Cotton Bowl are about as good as gone. so if interested you might as well get those flights booked to Orlando.

That’s the unfortunate reality when what happens in Ann Arbor in late October happen to you in front of a national audience.

 

There’s a new basketball star named Darius Miles, and he’s going to be a star, too

Darius Miles is now a three-star swingman playing for the IMG Academy postgraduate team, with a future with the likes of Georgetown, Texas A&M or LSU.

Every year there are at least a handful of fifth-year high school graduates who compete on postgrad teams or at select prep schools and make enough of an impression to vault into the upper echelon of the forthcoming recruiting class. This year, one of those prospects appears to be Darius Miles.

No, not that Darius Miles. This one.

The new Darius Miles is an emerging star for the IMG Academy postgraduate squad. According to 247Sports, Miles — who stands 6-foot-7 — scored 33 points across a pair of games at the National Prep Showcase over the weekend.  In conjunction with the rise he’s experienced and impressive performances he has put on, more programs are jumping in to recruit him, including Texas A&M and LSU.

Those SEC programs appear to have a strong line to the swingman, though they’ll have to compete with Georgetown (from his hometown of Washington, D.C.), Rutgers, Rhode Island and possibly others. If there’s any chance he could live up to his namesake’s performance, there will probably be more programs chasing his signature soon.

What might be the biggest takeaways here for Notre Dame isn’t that they didn’t move from 15, but that Virginia Tech, Navy and Southern California all are now ranked.

If that holds true with the College Football Playoff Committee who releases their rankings Tuesday night, Notre Dame having three wins over top 25 teams may be enough on the resume to lift them from their No. 16 ranking.

 

Florida Gulf Coast football program, which is club not varsity, sent out 100 fake scholarship offers

Someone affiliated with the club football program at Florida Gulf Coast University allegedly sent out fake scholarship offers to more than 100 prospective football players.

A scandal is brewing on campus at Florida Gulf Coast University, where someone affiliated with the school’s club football team sent out 100 fake scholarship offers to high school football players, giving the false impression that the teens in question could come play at FGCU on the school’s dime.

If you haven’t ever heard of FGCU football before, you’re not alone. The Eagles athletics department is best known for its basketball program, which rode Dunk City pandemonium to the Sweet 16 in the 2013 NCAA Tournament, eliminating the likes of Georgetown and San Diego State in the process. While they haven’t captured quite as much success since, the Eagles still reached the NCAA Tournament in 2016 and 2017.

Some also associate FGCU with its baseball program, which has produced more than 100 major and minor leaguers, most notable Red Sox ace Chris Sale.

But those aren’t the programs that were soliciting talented teenagers. Rather, it was the school’s club football team, which just finished its second-ever season with a 6-2 record, per our Gannett partners at the Naples Daily News.

So, how did a club program extend more than 100 “scholarship” offers to prospective student athletes? According to a statement from FGCU officials, the scholarship notices were sent out by a “non-employee, volunteer” with the sport club.

“There’s just been a large amount of social media chatter, young people congratulating each other on offers to play football at FGCU,” FGCU Vice President and Chief of Staff Susan Evans told the Daily News. “We just wanted to clear up a few things in case there was some confusion. First off, these offers aren’t being made by anyone in the athletic program as the football club isn’t affiliated with our athletic program. Second, any of these players getting so-called offers would have to apply for admission to the school just like anyone else. And third, there are no plans for football to be added as an NCAA sport.”

Van Duser told the Daily News that some local businesses had stepped forward to offer $2,000 scholarships to players on the team for the forthcoming four years, but none of those have allegedly been received or assigned to existing or incoming players in 2020. All of which leaves the players who received notices of an offer from FGCU exactly where they were before they received that offer … without a scholarship offer from a school in Fort Myers, Fla.

 

Florida high school football coach ousted after investigation into locker room hazing

Matt Dixon, the head football coach at Oviedo (Fla.) High School, was not retained Thursday after an investigation into alleged hazing practices.

A Florida high school football coach is out of his role leading the team after complaints about a form of hazing in the team’s locker room spilled out and led to pressure on the program.

As reported by Orlando ABC affiliate WFTV, the Oviedo (Fla.) football program became engulfed in controversy over locker room physical interactions the student athletes called “code reds”, where veteran players targeted younger members of the team and forcibly touched them, sometimes holding them down and penetrating them.

While three football players were suspended earlier in the football season for their role in the incidents, that only scratched the surface of a series of interactions for which school administrators interviewed more than 100 players.

In the aftermath of the investigation, Oviedo football coach Matt Dixon was not retained, though he is expected to remain as a teacher in the district.

The investigation into code reds was not Dixon’s first brush with administrative scorn; he and his assistants were allegedly issued warnings for their prolific use of foul language in front of players, the lone substantiated claim against the coach after one of his players accused Dixon and an assistant of bullying.

Now Dixon’s football future will have to come elsewhere if he hopes to continue coaching at the high school level.

What did Oklahoma do to tick off the committee I do have to ask.  The Sooners got a huge win, coming from behind to beat a previously unbeaten Baylor team, a win more impressive than any that is on the resume of Utah, Oregon, Penn State, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson or Ohio State.  Yet the loss at K-State is what is keeping them down?  Man alive, no love for the Big XII this year and I can’t say I agree with it.

Alabama stays at No. 5 and they deserve to.  I hate the idea this week that has been tossed around that if Tua is out that they’re not worthy of being a playoff team.  You can argue they don’t deserve a chance and I would, because they lost a home game to LSU and the Tigers should have to potentially beat Alabama another time to win it all.  But if they were number five a week ago and they won easily, they don’t deserve to fall, even if their star quarterback is out.  Those arguing the contrary, tell me how that worked out for Ohio State back in 2014.

Predicting College Football Playoff rankings – Does Georgia football move?

Does Georgia football move in our predictions of the new College Football Playoff rankings.

On Tuesday night, the College Football Playoff rankings will be revealed on ESPN. Between now and then, the committee will have a lot to discuss regarding the 5-10 positions.

As for 1-4, it’s pretty set in stone.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson and Georgia all took care of business. The Dawgs definitely had the most impressive win of the weekend among those teams, a road win vs No. 12 Auburn, but it should remain at four as the three undefeateds ahead of it still have a 0 in the loss column.

There was some drama on Saturday.

1-7 all won their games, but in Tuscaloosa the Tide surely are not celebrating after hearing the news that Tua Tagovailoa dislocated his hip and will be out for the remainder of the season.

The highest ranked team to lose was No. 8 Minnesota, which fell to Iowa.

No. 9 Penn State survived a scare from Indiana but held on to win by a touchdown.

And No. 13 Baylor was handed its first loss of the season via an epic comeback from Jalen Hurts and Oklahoma.

With everything in mind, I will attempt to predict what the committee will do on Tuesday.

These are not my rankings, but a prediction of what the rankings will look like

1. LSU

2. Ohio State

3. Clemson

4. Georgia

5. Alabama

I think the committee is going to give Alabama the benefit of the doubt until the Tide prove they don’t belong. If Alabama loses to Auburn, it’ll obviously move down. So they’ll just wait and see. 

6. Oregon

7. Utah

8. Oklahoma (jumps Penn State)

9. Penn State

10. Florida

This would give Georgia one win over a team in the top-10, Florida. Additionally, I predict Auburn will fall to No. 17 and Notre Dame, after destroying Navy, will move to no. 13.

Watch: Dan Mullen makes it clear who he’s cheering for between Georgia and Auburn

When Florida Gators HC Dan Mullen was asked about Georgia football’s game vs Auburn, he made it clear who he was cheering for.

Following Florida’s win over Missouri on Saturday, the Gators will have their eyes glued to CBS to watch Georgia take on Auburn.

If Georgia wins, it secures a spot in the SEC Championship. A loss and Georgia will have to beat Texas A&M to make it in.

Florida’s game today was its final SEC matchup of the season. So if Georgia happens to lose to the Tigers and Aggies, the Gators are headed to Atlanta.

When Mullen was asked by CBS for his thoughts on the Georgia vs Auburn game, he made it clear who he was cheering for.

“War Eagle,” Mullen said.
