Duke softball wins regular-season ACC title

After a 44-6 record and 20 conference wins, the Duke Blue Devils softball team claimed the ACC regular-season title.

The Blue Devils are your 2024 regular-season ACC softball champions.

After a 44-6 regular season that included 20 wins over conference opponents, the Duke softball team officially clinched the ACC crown on Friday night.

Outside of a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Virginia on April 20, the Blue Devils only lost two ACC games all season. They swept Syracuse, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Clemson, and NC State.

Duke won its final five games of the season, culminating in that three-game sweep of the Wolfpack.

Florida State, whom Duke defeated in a series back in March, could have won the conference title with a sweep of Syracuse this weekend. However, the Orange walked off the Seminoles on Friday afternoon to drop them to 18-4 in ACC play, clinching Duke’s triumph.

The Blue Devils now set their sights on a second conference tournament trophy after Duke took the ACC Tournament title in 2021.

Oklahoma falls to No. 22 in latest D1Baseball poll

Oklahoma lost a tough series to Texas but still remain a top 25 team with a chance to earn the number one seed in the Big 12.

After a 2-2 week, the Oklahoma Sooners slid a few spots in the latest D1Baseball poll.

Oklahoma had a monumental matchup with their Red River rivals, the Texas Longhorns, but the Sooners couldn’t secure a series victory. Oklahoma remains the top team in the Big 12 with a 15-6 conference record, but that lead is down to just one game in the loss column. Oklahoma State and West Virginia are right behind the Sooners at 14-7.

Oklahoma comes in at No. 22 in the latest poll and will get a chance to bounce back this week with games against Oral Roberts and a road series against Texas Tech.

The top three schools in this poll are future SEC foes, Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee. The ACC’s best team, Clemson, is No. 4 in the country, while East Carolina rounds out the top five. Oregon State comes in at six, while Florida State, Kentucky, UC Irvine, and Duke round out the top 10.

Oklahoma State is No. 14 in the poll and the only other Big 12 team to earn a spot in this week’s ranking.

Duke’s series loss to FSU drops Blue Devils to 10th in latest D1 Baseball poll

Duke remains in top 10 of the D1Baseball poll despite series loss to FSU.

Duke had a chance to bolster its postseason resume this weekend in a pivotal home series against a ranked FSU team.

Instead, Duke fell short in the Friday and Saturday games before exploding for a run-rule win on Sunday afternoon.

With its loss to the Seminoles and midweek loss to the Campbell Camels that completed a home-and-home series, Duke finished last week 1-3 and slid down to 10th in the newest D1Baseball poll.

Texas A&M, Arkansas, and Tennessee remained the poll’s top three teams for another week. Clemson moved up a spot to fourth, while ECU, who is scheduled to take on Duke in May, is now the fifth-ranked team in the country. Oregon State moved three places to sixth, while Florida State jumped from tenth to seventh. Kentucky and UC Irvine round out the remaining teams ahead of the Blue Devils.

Duke heads for the exam break this week and will have no midweek games before returning to action on Sunday against the Longwood Lancers. The first pitch for game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.

CB Jarrian Jones: Playing for Jaguars ‘a dream of mine’

Jacksonville third-round pick, cornerback Jarrian Jones: “Playing for the Jaguars has been a dream of mine.”

Roughly 250 individual dreams come true around this time each year, when prospects receive calls from pro teams about their imminent selection in the 2024 NFL draft.

For Florida State cornerback Jarrian Jones, two dreams were realized late Friday night, when his name was called by Jacksonville with the No. 96 overall pick in the third round.

“Man,” Jones exclaimed to reporters in his post-selection press conference, “when I saw that number pop up, I was so happy because playing for the Jaguars has been a dream of mine.”

From Magee, Miss., teams like New Orleans, Atlanta, Dallas, even AFC South rivals Tennessee and Houston geographically make a bit more sense for Jones to have been devoted to in his youth. What made the Jaguars his favorite team?

“Growing up I was a big Maurice Jones-Drew guy,” Jones revealed. “Big Maurice Jones-Drew guy, like I was a superfan of him. I watched just about every game that he played.”

Jacksonville’s second-round pick in 2006, Jones-Drew began his time with the Jaguars when Jones was five years old and received numerous All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors throughout Jones’ formative years around the game of football.

Jones recalled regularly playing the Madden video game series with Jones-Drew as his player of choice — “he used to go for like 200 yards every game I played,” Jones said — and frequently observing Jones-Drew plow over defenders in the A-gap of the trenches on Sundays.

“I had the t-shirt that had MJD on the back,” Jones shared. “I was kind of one of those fanatics.”

Jones’ feelings for the Jaguars only strengthened during the 2016 NFL draft, when Jacksonville took former Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey with its first-round selection.

In just over three seasons with the club, Ramsey earned one All-Pro and two Pro Bowl nods, setting a standard for performance at his position for Jones. The two former Seminoles have bonded over the years with the older defensive backs offering the young prospect tips of the trade.

“I definitely idolized Jalen, of course coming from Florida State we kind of played in the same defense,” Jones said. “When Jalen went there from Florida State, I was tuned into every game. Him playing inside, outside, just what he brought to the game.

“I kind of fell in love with the Jaguars while Jalen was there, [and] especially while Maurice Jones-Drew was there.”

With a pressing need at cornerback, Jacksonville made Jones its third pick of the 2024 NFL draft after taking wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and defensive lineman Maason Smith Jr., both from LSU, in the first and second rounds, respectively.

In five seasons of college football, one with Mississippi State and four with Florida State, Jones recorded 96 tackles with 7.5 for loss, five interceptions, 12 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries over 55 games and 29 starts.

Day 3 of the 2024 NFL draft will begin at noon ET on Saturday. Jacksonville has six selections remaining.

2024 NFL draft: Jaguars pick CB Jarrian Jones in third round

Late Friday, Jacksonville selected Florida State cornerback Jarrian Jones with its compensatory, No. 96 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft.

The Jaguars traded their original 2024 third-round pick to Atlanta in a package for wide receiver Calvin Ridley, who now plays for Tennessee. They received the compensatory pick due to offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor’s 2023 free agency signing with Kansas City.

Jones, who spent four years with the Seminoles after signing with Mississippi State out of high school in 2019, joins the Jaguars after accumulating 96 tackles with 7.5 for loss, five interceptions, 12 pass breakups and two fumble recoveries over 55 games and 29 starts in college.

Standing at 5-foot-11 and 7/8-inch (57th percentile among cornerbacks since 1999), 190 pounds (39th percentile), Jones posted a 4.38-second 40-yard dash (89th percentile), 1.53-second 10-yard split (61st percentile), 39 and 1/2-inch vertical jump (86th percentile) and 129-inch broad jump (87th percentile) at the NFL combine.

Jones was Jacksonville’s third selection of the 2024 NFL draft, following first-round wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. and second-round defensive lineman Maason Smith, both hailing from LSU.

Duke rises to No. 6 in D1Baseball poll after first road series win against Virginia Tech in years

Duke keeps rising in latest D1Baseball poll, moving up to No. 6 after they took a ranked road series against Virginia Tech.

Duke’s weekend in Blacksburg was full of excitement as Duke won a road series against Virginia Tech for the first time in six years. Both Duke wins came with late-inning dramatics, as the Blue Devils fought back and won the game late.

For their efforts against a top-25 team, the Blue Devils saw themselves rise one spot to No. 6 in the latest D1Baseball poll.

Duke’s win puts them two games behind UNC for the Coastal Division lead as the Blue Devils enter the home stretch of the regular season.

At the top of the newest D1Baseball poll, the Texas A&M Aggies remain the nation’s number one team. Arkansas is second while the Tennessee Volunteers are third. Kentucky and ACC foe Clemson are ranked ahead of Duke at fourth and fifth, respectively.

East Carolina, Wake Forest, and Oklahoma State follow in order before Duke’s next ACC opponent, Florida State, slots in at 10th.

The rest of the ACC continues to be well represented in the poll, with Virginia and North Carolina ranked 14th and 15th, respectively, while NC State ranked 21st.

Duke will remain on the road for a midweek game against a tough Campbell Camels team before returning home for a top-10 weekend series against the Florida State Seminoles.

What teams have contacted Sean Stewart in the transfer portal?

Sean Stewart, the former four-star prospect who announced his intent to transfer from Duke, has heard from a litany of SEC, Big Ten, and ACC schools in the portal thus far.

Former Duke forward Sean Stewart, a former four-star prospect from the Class of 2023, announced his intention to transfer from Duke on Friday. It hasn’t taken him long to collect a laundry list of suitors.

According to a Saturday report from League Ready’s Sam Kayser, Stewart heard from 23 teams in his first day on the market.

The two most notable conferences in play for Stewart are the SEC and the Big Ten. The Tennessee Volunteers, Texas A&M Aggies, South Carolina Gamecocks, and Vanderbilt Commodores all appeared on the list.

Former Kentucky coach John Calipari, now the coach for the Arkansas Razorbacks, also appeared interested in the 6-foot-9 forward, as did the Wildcats, now coached by former BYU leader Mark Pope.

On the Big Ten side, the two biggest names in the conference both appear to be in play. Michigan and Ohio State have both reached out to Stewart, according to Kayser, as have the Indiana Hoosiers.

Some in-conference rivals have extended an olive branch as well. Florida State and Miami both reached out, as did future conference members California and Stanford.

Check out the full list of potential suitors below.

Stewart averaged 2.6 points and 3.2 rebounds as a freshman despite playing just 8.4 minutes per game.

Florida State’s Luke Clanton becomes first Seminole to win three straight events

Not a bad time to be in Tallahassee.

No one in college golf has been better this spring than Luke Clanton.

The sophomore captured his third straight tournament victory Tuesday, winning the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial at Birdwood Golf Course in Charlottesville, Virginia. Clanton shot 15-under 198, beating Tennessee’s Bryce Lewis by five shots to win.

Clanton is the first Seminole in school history to win three straight events. Over his last nine rounds played, Clanton has seven rounds in the 60s.

In addition to his three victories this spring, Clanton tied for eighth at the Amer Ari in Hawaii and finished T-7 at the Watersound Invitational. After a slower start to the year, Clanton now has put himself squarely in the conversation for the Haskins Award, given to the best player in men’s college golf.

It has been a banner week for the Seminoles.

On Saturday, sophomore Lottie Woad birdied three of her final four holes to claim the fifth Augusta National Women’s Amateur title. She threw out the first pitch Tuesday night at the Florida State home baseball game.

Earlier in the day, Clanton claimed win No. 3 on the year.
