Florida Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gators miss from the SEC slate?

As always the Gators have to play LSU. To make matters worse against a loaded team, it’s on the road. On the positive side, the other game against the West is at home against Arkansas. However, that’s sandwiched between the dates with Georgia and LSU.

Offsetting the road game against LSU is who’s missing. There’s no Alabama to deal with, Texas A&M isn’t on the schedule, and there’s no Auburn, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State.

Florida Football Schedule What Really Matters

The Gators have GOT to win the home dates.

Again, the LSU date is on the road, but the Georgia game – as always – is in Jacksonville. Tennessee has to make the trip to Gainesville, and so does Florida State. That doesn’t mean everything is in easy driving distance of The Swamp, but there are enough to pile up a slew of wins.

There’s a reason the team needs to pull those off …

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

Opening the season at Utah is a problem.

That’s a tough way to kick things off, putting all the pressure on the home game against Tennessee – at least more than there already will be. Lose that, and then things get dicey with road games at Kentucky and South Carolina before dealing with Georgia.

If the Gators can’t get by the Vols, it’s going to take a lot of work to be better than 4-4 – probably more like 3-5 – before dealing with November.

That’s not to say they can’t beat the Wildcats or Gamecocks on the road, but that’s not a given.

It’s Florida. It’s going to come up with a good second season under Billy Napier and it’ll easily go bowling. It’s going to be a fight at times, though.

Which SEC East teams have the toughest and easiest nonconference schedules in 2022?

The SEC is not known for playing the most difficult nonconference schedules. Georgia usually plays a respectable nonconference slate, but it does not pack the same punch when the Bulldogs play ACC cellar dweller Georgia Tech as it once used to.

Last year, Texas-Arkansas, Miami-Alabama, Clemson-Georgia, Pittsburgh-Tennessee, and Penn State-Auburn were among the conference’s most intriguing nonconference games. In 2022, there are several interesting matchups, including Alabama-Texas, Georgia-Oregon, Texas A&M-Miami, Florida-Utah and Auburn-Penn State.

Conference schedules are set years in advance. Programs have more control over their nonconference schedules, so it is interesting to see which ones aren’t afraid to schedule strong opponents.

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: Who do the Gators miss from the SEC West?

Any year you can miss Alabama is a good one. Florida doesn’t have to face the Crimson Tide, but the jury is out on whether or not – relatively speaking – not playing Mississippi State or Auburn will be a good thing in 2022. The Gators don’t have face Arkansas or Ole Miss, either, but …

There’s the annual game against LSU along with a really, really ill-timed trip to Texas A&M. Here’s the problem …

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: The second half

Florida is going to wear out its welcome at home over the first half of the season and then comes the bizarre pivot.

Six of the first seven games are in Gainesville with Tennessee the load road trio. The schedule piper gets paid in the second half of the season with four trips away from home in five weeks. Florida plays just one home game against South Carolina from October 15th until the finish.

Florida Football Schedule What To Know: What does it all really mean?

It’s not easy.

The second half is a monster, home games against Utah and Eastern Washington are hardly givens, and back-to-back dates against Georgia and Texas A&M will be rough.

But again, there’s no Alabama. LSU is going to be an SEC X factor – to be nice, more like an enigma for now – Florida State still might need a while, and there’s no one on the slate – at least until the Georgia game – that Florida can’t and shouldn’t beat if everything is working.

However, if Billy Napier has Florida even close to being merely decent, six wins won’t be a problem as long as the home wins are banked early on.
