UFC veteran Felipe Colares was returning home from training when he was struck by a bus and died Monday in Rio de Janeiro.

UFC veteran [autotag]Felipe Colares[/autotag] is dead after being struck by a bus in Rio de Janeiro. He was 29.

Brazilian media outlet Combate, citing Colares’ coach, Rodrigo Babi, reported that the tragic incident took place Monday morning in the Guaratiba neighborhood of Rio. Colares was returning home from training when he was run over by a bus. Colares was quickly attended to by first responders and rushed to a local hospital, but he died from his injuries on the way there, according to Combate.

One of Colares’ cousins, Selma Cunha, confirmed his death on Facebook.

Colares turned professional in July 2013 and was 8-0 at the time he got called up to the UFC. He made his UFC debut in February 2019 and went 2-4 in the promotion – with decision wins over Domingo Pilarte and Luke Sanders – before he exited after May 2022 loss to Chase Hooper.

Colares most recently competed this past February at Ares FC 12 where he defeated Alioune Nahaye by first-round submission with a rear-naked choke.

Colares made headlines in Januaray after posting an Instagram video of himself subduing an alleged thief in Brazil. He told MMA Fighting that he sprung into action after he witnessed “an alleged assault to a woman.”

According to Combate, Colares is survived by his wife, Jaqueline, and a 6-month-old son.

UFC Fight Night 194: Chris Gutierrez vs. Felipe Colares odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 194 odds and lines between Chris Gutierrez vs. Felipe Colares, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a bantamweight bout on the main card, Chris Gutierrez meets Felipe Colares Saturday at UFC Fight Night 194 – also known as UFC Vegas 39 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility in Las Vegas. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 194 Gutierrez vs. Colares odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims at 2 p.m. ET and the main card at 4 p.m. ET.

Gutierrez holds a 4.30-to-2.15 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Gutierrez, a.k.a. “El Guapo”, has posted a 4-0-1 record since making his UFC debut March 23, 2019. His last victory at UFC 258 in Feb. was a unanimous-decision win over Andre Ewell.

Colares has alternated wins and losses in his four fights since arriving at the UFC. While he was doing great work on the canvas, recording five submission wins in his first seven professional fights, all four of his bouts at the UFC level have gone the distance.

UFC Fight Night 194 Gutierrez vs. Colares: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Gutierrez (16-3-2) | Colares (10-2-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

Gutierrez (-250) will cost you two and a half times your potential return, and that’s a bit much. Instead, get more specific.

While I expect the favorite to pick up the win, it won’t be easy. Colares has been pushing his opponents to the limit lately, and your best best is GUTIERREZ ON POINTS (-109) at near even-money instead.

Over/Under (O/U)

YES (-200): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a little on the expensive side, but that’s the play since I like Gutierrez on points. Risking two times your potential return isn’t terribly out of line.

UFC on ESPN 23 results: Felipe Colares rallies from beating, edges Luke Sanders

Felipe Colares snatched victory from the jaws of defeat when he rallied to beat Luke Sanders at UFC on ESPN 23.

[autotag]Felipe Colares[/autotag] snatched victory from the jaws of defeat Saturday when he rallied to beat [autotag]Luke Sanders[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN 23.

Colares (10-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC) took a brutal thumping from Sanders (13-5 MMA, 3-5 UFC) in the first round of their featherweight bout, which opened the card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. He got dropped multiple times and appeared on the verge of being stopped by TKO, but then Colares turned it around.

After escaping the opening frame, Colares got some momentum in the second when he hurt Sanders with some big shots before picking him up and slamming him to the canvas. He got back mount in the final seconds and pounded away on Sanders to nearly get a stoppage of his own with strikes. Sanders, to his fortune, though, was saved by the bell.

The fight was hanging in the balance to begin the third, and both men left it all in the octagon. Sanders and Colares exchanged big strikes and takedowns in hopes of getting the final edge, but Colares racked up the points in the key moments to emerge victorious by unanimous decision with 29-28 scorecards across the board.

It was a razor-thin fight, but Colares thought he was the rightful winner with his display of heart after a rough first round.

“I feel great,” Colares said in his post-fight interview with Paul Felder. “An amazing moment for me. Thank you for my opponent.”

Colares has now split results in his first four octagon appearances, while Sanders has dropped three of his past four bouts.
