David Montgomery nominated for FedEx Ground Player of the Week

Montgomery ran for 121 yards and 3 TDs in Green Bay

For a player who was officially questionable for the matchup, Lions running back David Montgomery sure looked great in Detroit’s Week 4 win over the Green Bay Packers. Montgomery earned a nomination for the FedEx Ground Player of the Week for his gritty performance on Thursday Night Football.

Montgomery fought through a painful thigh bruise that had sidelined him in Week 3 and gashed the Green Bay defense for 121 yards on 32 carries. He scored touchdowns on three of those runs, making him a very worthy nominee for this week’s FedEx Ground award.

He’s up against Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers and Derrick Henry of the Titans.

The honor is decided by fan voting. From the press release from FedEx:

Voting is open until Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. ET at NFL.com/FedEx each week of the season. Fans can also vote on Twitter via the @NFL published polls and on the NFL Mobile App.

Jamaal Williams wins FedEx Ground Player of the Week

Lions RB Jamaal Williams wins FedEx Ground Player of the Week for Week 11

Williams rushed for 64 yards and scored three touchdowns in Detroit’s 31-18 road win. That was enough to win the award in a week where only one runner topped 100 yards and several of the league’s top backs had miserable games, including New York’s Saquon Barkley (15 carries, 22 yards) against Williams’ Lions. Williams is now the NFL’s leader in rushing touchdowns with 12.

It isWilliams’ first time winning the honor. He is still looking for a trip to his first Pro Bowl, too.

Bears QB Justin Fields named Week 10 FedEx Ground Player of the Week

Bears QB Justin Fields named Week 10 FedEx Ground Player of the Week

The awards keep coming for Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields. The NFL announced Fields as the winner of this week’s FedEx Ground Player of the Week award.

The second-year quarterback was one of the top rushers last weekend in the Bears’ 31-30 loss against the Detroit Lions and fans voted him as the league’s top rusher for Week 10.

Fields carried the ball 13 times for 147 yards and two scores against the Lions. 67 of those yards came on one run when he torched the Lions defense for his second touchdown of the day. The performance came on the heels of his record-setting day the week prior against the Miami Dolphins, where he rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown.

This was Fields’ second nomination in as many weeks. He took down New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley and Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor in the fan vote.

Through 10 games, Fields has 749 rushing yards on the season, good for sixth best in the NFL. He’s on pace to eclipse 1,000 yards rushing and has a chance to break the single-season rushing record by a quarterback, set by Lamar Jackson in 2019 with 1,206. He’ll look to continue his hot streak this weekend when the Bears travel south to face the Atlanta Falcons.

Seahawks RB Rashaad Penny named FedEx Ground Player of Week 4

For his impressive efforts against the Lions, Seattle Seahawks running back Rashaad Penny was named the FedEx Ground Player of Week 4.

The Seattle Seahawks offense put up big numbers against the Detroit Lions in Week 4, resulting in a final Scorigami of 48-45. For his efforts, quarterback Geno Smith was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Week. Running back Rashaad Penny was also honored and voted the FedEx Ground Player of Week 4.

In Detroit on Sunday, Penny logged 17 carries for 151 yards and two rushing touchdowns. He also managed one reception for six yards.

In the FedEx Ground Player of the Week poll, Penny was pitted against Josh Jacobs and Miles Sanders. The Seahawks running back won with 44.1% of the vote.

The complete results are below.

There’s a real suddenness to him and it’s the power that he has,” coach Pete Carroll said of Penny on Wednesday. “He runs right through tackles that normally guys have to change course. He didn’t have to change course half the time. A guy reaches out and tries to get him, whether it’s the big guys or not. He just runs right through it, and it doesn’t affect him, so he seems to maximize his opportunity to get to top speed and you feel like when he bust it, he’s gone.

“You don’t feel like anybody is not going to get a shot at him and he has proven that.”
