Lions Wire fantasy football weekly: 2021 Week 3 preview

Our Derek Okrie breaks down the week in fantasy football with special emphasis on the Lions vs. Ravens

Another exciting week of fantasy football in the books. We saw Lamar Jackson (QB Ravens) add to his highlight reel in a marquee matchup against Patrick Mahomes (QB Chiefs). A ton of other top players racked up big numbers too such as Derrick Henry (RB Titans), Travis Kelce (TE Chiefs), Aaron Jones (Packers RB), and Tyler Locker (WR Seahawks).

Week 3 will be another unique mystery when it kicks off. Will Ezekiel Elliott (RB Cowboys) finally put up the numbers everyone expects or will Tony Pollard (RB Cowboys) take a good portion of his carries as the possible starter moving forward?

Fantasy owners are still waiting to see if Saquon Barkley (RB Giants) can return to the top form he once showed. This will be another big week in National Football League for fantasy football and it is only Week 3.

Ravens at Lions fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions find their record at 0-2 with two tough losses against two very tough teams. The schedule doesn’t get any easier here in Week 3 with the Baltimore Ravens coming to town. There are quite a few interesting matchups in this one when it comes to fantasy football.

The Lions will have to try to find a way to slow down Lamar Jackson (QB Ravens). He can run the football like no other quarterback in the game, and with Detroit having major injuries at cornerback he will be looking to hit big plays to his speedy wide receivers too.

Jared Goff (QB Lions) has been up and down this season, to say the least. At times he has played really well and at other points, turnovers have haunted him again. If the Lions want to win this game and please fantasy owners out there they need to feature their two best offensive players T.J. Hockenson (TE Lions) and D’Andre Swift (RB Lions).

This game could be big for those with the Ravens skills players and it also could be a bit of a slow, ugly game from both teams. Start most of the stars for the Ravens, but don’t be surprised in some Lions players have big fantasy days too in this game.

Bottom Line

After a couple of games in you are starting to know what your best starting lineup is for your fantasy team and you probably already have some injuries to manage too. Continue to start your stud players while also showing that you aren’t afraid to go pick up the hot hand off the waiver wire.

The next few weeks are crucial to pick up wins for your fantasy team and the Detroit Lions need to try to do the same. Neither wants to fall too far back in the standings early in the season.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2021 Week 2 Preview

Breaking down who start or sit and the best fantasy matchups for the Week 2 slate of NFL games

The biggest overreaction often comes in Week 2 of the fantasy football season. Whoever did great in those first set of games is the flavor of the week and top players that didn’t show up are now showing up unexpectedly on the trade block.

This is a great opportunity to scoop up those elite talents that are now being offered at bargain-basement prices, and it is also your chance to show patience as a fantasy general manager by holding on to your premier picks despite what they did or didn’t do in the first week of games.

Lions at Packers fantasy focus

In Week 1 the Detroit Lions couldn’t stop the San Francisco 49ers, and the Green Bay Packers couldn’t muster more than a field goal all game against the new-look New Orleans Saints. Something has to give in this Week 2 matchup on Monday Night Football.

T.J. Hockenson looked tremendous every time he was targeted, D’Andre Swift had an electric 43-yard touchdown on a screen pass, and Jamaal Williams also totaled over 100 all-purpose yards. These are all fantasy options that will have to play big again when they face the Packers this week.

Aaron Rodgers (QB Packers) is going to do everything in his power to explode against the Lions and quiet all his doubters. Fantasy owners of Rodgers aren’t going to R-E-L-A-X until he returns to his previous form and shows that he cares this season. Davante Adams (WR Packers) is going to fill up the stat sheet and Aaron Jones (RB Packers) always does damage against the visitors from Detroit, so put them both in your starting lineups.

This setups up to be a rebound game for the Packers and a statement game for the Lions in primetime. Can this tough Lions mentality hold off the previously explosive Packers offense? You have to tune in on Monday night to see.

It is only Week 2. Way too early to jump to conclusions about your fantasy team or your favorite NFL team. Let the season play out a bit and watch the cream rise to the top.

Was your fantasy team behind by a ton like the Lions in your last matchup, did you make a furious comeback to only fall just short, or did you pull out a thrilling victory? Whatever the outcome it has no bearing on Week 2, so put in your best fantasy lineup and see what happens when the smoke clears in another exciting fantasy football week where anything can happen.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2021 Week 1 Preview

Our Derek Okrie breaks down the Week 1 fantasy football slate

The 2021 NFL Season is finally here, and that means the actual fantasy football season kicks off too. The off-season was the time to draft your roster and set your team up for success, but now the games count both in the NFL and in fantasy football.

Your draft is complete, maybe you have made a couple of trades, and now it is time to set your roster. Take a look at your opponent’s team and see how you stack up. Everyone loves their fantasy team heading into Week 1 and everyone has hope. Before your fantasy team hits the field, just remember to compete hard to win while also enjoying the entire season.

Lions vs 49ers fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions have a similar mindset to fantasy owners. They have created their new roster all off-season and now it is time to see what they have on Sunday. New Head Coach Dan Campbell is excited to get things started and he has some very interesting fantasy football players on the offensive side of the ball to unleash.

D’Andre Swift has been dealing with injuries throughout Traning Camp, but the word is that he is healthy and ready to start the season as the lead running back in Detroit. Expect him to catch a ton more passes in this new offense even if the touchdowns aren’t there as they were in his rookie year where he scored a ton.

The big question for the Lions from a fantasy perspective is the wide receiver position. Will someone emerge as the top target and be dynamic in the passing game? In fantasy football, Tyrell Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown are the two main candidates to be fantasy factors.

The 49ers have a top-flight tight end in George Kittle, a productive running back in Raheem Mostert, two dynamic wide receivers, and the ultimate wildcard in rookie quarterback Trey Lance. The Detroit Lions defense will have their hands full.

Most NFL offenses seem to start a bit slow in Week 1. Looking at this matchup, some experts have it as a blowout and others see it as a low-scoring game where the Lions could shock the world. This doesn’t feel as if it is a fantasy bonanza by any means, but there are some premier players that could put up big numbers. Can’t wait to see what happens in this game and how it impacts your fantasy team.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 16 preview

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 16 preview

With it being the holiday season it is time to look at some of the best gifts under the fantasy football tree this year. The biggest present under the tree was one of the biggest running back in the NFL and that is Derrick Henry (RB Titans). Probably the best gift in all of fantasy football is a league winning type running back and Henry helps provide that by getting a heavy workload each week, rushing yards often in the high triples figures consistently, and plenty of touchdowns.

Most times kids at Christmas want the newest and shiniest type of toys under the tree. In fantasy football, those new toys are the rookies that enter the league each year and get fantasy owners very excited. The top rookie gifts this year have been Justin Jefferson (WR Vikings), Jonathan Taylor (RB Colts), Joe Burrow (QB Bengals), and D’Andre Swift (RB Lions). These rookies along with others have been good fantasy players this season and have bright futures ahead.

Lions vs. Buccaneers fantasy focus

Fantasy owners in 2020 continued to hope for the gift of a Kenny Golladay return, but that still hasn’t come since he left the field in early November. Kenny is looking for a large gift in the form of a new contract either from the Detroit Lions or some other team after this season is over. He played great for the limited time he played during this football season, but Kenny and fantasy owners alike will hope for much better gifts for him and from him next season when he hits the field again.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers skill players have had an up and down year throughout this season. Tom Brady (QB Buccanneers) has been a bit inconsistent at times and brilliant at other moments. Chris Godwin (WR Buccaneers) was poised for another breakout year until hand, finger, and other injuries forced him to miss multiple games. Mike Evans always seems to be dealing with multiple nagging injuries in between the tremendous catches he often makes on the football field. With all of that being said though the team is in prime playoff position and Antonio Brown (WR Buccaneers) seems to just be rounding into shape too.

The Detroit Lions have enjoyed having D’Andre Swift (RB Lions) back at running back, Marvin Jones (WR Lions) has impressed at wide receiver once again, and T.J. Hockenson (TE Lions) was named as the NFC Pro Bowl starting tight end after his second season in the NFL has been a great showing in a multitude of ways for the former Iowa prospect. The talk about the Lions centers around the toughness and quality play of quarterback Matthew Stafford in recent weeks though. Stafford has been playing great and again is showing he’s a top-quality fantasy quarterback that you can win with.

This game is on Saturday between the Buccanneers and the Lions at 1:00 PM EST inside of Ford Field. Expect all Buccanneers to have big days on offense. Tom Brady will throw it early and often to all of his skilled wide receivers and tight ends with Ronald Jones (RB Buccanneers) still dealing with injuries. Play everyone from Tampa Bay and expect big dividends, and play some of the Lions stars in hopes for quality return at least in fantasy football. This game will be a bombastic and boisterous win by the Buccanneers against the Lions.

The big question is do you or will you have a new bright shiny championship under your tree this year? After a year full of injuries, COVID-19, game reschedules, and many other unique factors it has been a fantasy football season like no other.

When it is all said and done though it is all worth it if you get to unwrap the bragging rights and all the other glorious gifts that come along with being named the reigning, defending, undisputed fantasy football champion of the world in your league.

With football Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday this week – have a Merry Fantasy Football Christmas everybody!

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 15 preview

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 15 preview

In fantasy football there often is a difference between the best players and the player with the best statistics. Derrick Henry (RB Titans) leads the league in rushing statistics, but most fantasy owners would probably put Saquon Barkley (RB Giants), Christian McCaffrey (RB Panthers), Alvin Kamar (RB Saints), and Dalvin Cook (RB Vikings) ahead of him if they all were healthy and if we were drafting tomorrow.

The same can be said at other positions as well. The key to fantasy football is being able to identify the top players while also keeping your finger on the pulse of what fantasy players are putting up the best statistics that particular year in order to be in contention for your championship in seasonal leagues. Dynasty leagues are a different story; the quality of the prospect is almost always the top factor to consider.

Lions at Titans fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions will face one of those top players in 2020 and a physical specimen in Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry. This guy is 6-foot-3 and 247 lbs, and the Lions run defense has been one of the many liabilities on their team this year. The Lions will have to find a way to slow down the opponent’s run game and the Titans have a stud in wide receiver A.J. Brown too.

D’Andre Swift returned last week to help Detroit’s backfield. He’s a dynamic running back, but with him just coming off the injury list last week it is hard to determine how much he will be used. The Lions have been hurt by injuries to other top fantasy skill players and on defense throughout the season.

This looks like a mismatch for the Titans. Tennessee has a physical, nasty team and the Lions are very beat up physically along with them not playing hard-nosed football on the defensive side of the ball consistently in 2020. Play all your Titans, and limit the Lions you play especially if Matthew Stafford is unable to play at quarterback due to a rib injury.

Bottom Line

Elite players are often elite. Statistics are often statistics. The key in fantasy football is to draft and identify elite players that put up the top statistics in your particular fantasy league. Easier said than done. Don’t let statistics blind you from top prospects. Also, don’t be afraid to cut ties or bench someone in a seasonal league for other players that are having great statistical seasons that particular year. As Bruce Lee once said, “Be water, my friends”.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 14 preview

Go get those playoff fantasy football wins!

In the National Football League and in fantasy football the goal is to score at least one more point than your opponent. There is nothing better than a victory — no matter how you get it. The most exciting are those thrilling victories when you are down a good amount of points late in the game and then storm back to win it in the end.

The Detroit Lions and many fantasy owners felt that way this past week with thrilling late wins. We had games until Tuesday night and, with lots of good players in that Cowboys vs. Ravens game, so I’m sure many fantasy matchups were won at the buzzer. The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat is real both in the NFL and in fantasy football.

Lions vs. Packers fantasy focus

This matchup appears to be a clear mismatch on paper. The Green Bay Packers have a great record, a quarterback hitting on all cylinders, and healthy skill players all over the field. The Detroit Lions don’t have a great record, they have injured skill players all over the field, and their defense continues to struggle mightily.

Fantasy football may be played on the computer, but the actual action still happens between the white lines on the football field. When the ball is kicked off, anything can happen. Most expect Aaron Rodgers (QB Packers) to light it up in this game, Aaron Jones (RB Packers) to run wild, and this to be an easy win for the Packers.

The Lions have Matthew Stafford coming off a big game though, Marvin Jones Jr. showed off his talents in one of his best games of the season last week, T.J. Hockenson is near the top of the NFC in plenty of statistical categories, and D’Andre Swift could possibly be returning to electrify at running back too.

Don’t be surprised if this an offensive bonanza in Detroit. Both teams will look to light up the scoreboard, and each defense will be on their heels all game. This game will be one of the top fantasy matchups of the week, so put in all your Packers and Lions this week.

Bottom Line

No bye weeks this week, so all your fantasy players will be ready to roll. It will be a great week to enjoy fantasy football as plenty of matchups and players are sure to shine.

Keep an eye on those talented players that haven’t produced in a while as a few of those will probably unexpectedly impress. Players coming off a big game last week could be locked down by opposing defenses this week.

The ups and downs of the NFL and fantasy football are real. That along with the absolute unpredictability are just a couple of reasons why it is always so fascinating. You never know what will happen on any given Sunday. The comeback victory might be the most fun, but just remember that all your favorite team or fantasy squad needs to do is score one more point than your opponent to be victorious. Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 12 preview

We all have a great deal to be thankful for in 2020. During this crazy year that we have all experienced, we should be thankful for family, health, and all the other blessings in our life.

We should also be thankful for the NFL moving forward with the season allowing us to enjoy a fantasy football season as it was only a few months ago that we didn’t know if we would see football at all in 2020.

Lions vs Texans fantasy focus

Thanksgiving is a very special day in the city of Detroit, but this year will feel much different than any other Thanksgiving kickoff. There won’t be a big gathering in Downtown Detroit for the Thanksgiving Day Parade, no fans will be in the stands, and families won’t gather around their tailgates just outside the stadium for turkey just before heading into the stadium.

Football will still be played at 12:30 PM on Thanksgiving Day though as always and it is still one of the best traditions in all of sports. The Detroit Lions are coming off an embarrassing loss where they were shutout by the Carolina Panthers last week. Now with Deshaun Watson (QB Texans) coming in on Thanksgiving, they will have to turn things around quickly.

The Lions have had some tough injuries to some of their top fantasy players: Kenny Golladay (Hip), D’Andre Swift (Concussion), T.J. Hockenson (Toe), and Matthew Stafford (Thumb). Some of them have played through these injuries even if their play has been hampered and others have been out. Getting Golladay and Swift back would be big for the Turkey Day extravaganza.

The Houston Texans are coming off a big win over the New England Patriots and a tremendous game by their superstar quarterback Deshaun Watson. Expect Watson and his speedy wide receivers to give the Lions issues during this early holiday game on Thursday. Will Fuller (WR Texans), Duke Johnson (RB Texans), and Brandin Cooks (WR Texans) are all good fantasy plays this week.

There is a saying, “The Lions always play good on Thanksgiving”, but recent history doesn’t necessarily prove that to be true. It has been another tough season for the Lions and their coach is firmly on the hot seat. The Lions will need Stafford, Jones Jr., Hockenson, and others to help lead them to a victory and make everyone thankful to be a Lions fan this Thanksgiving.

Bottom Line

Again, find reasons to be thankful during this crazy year that we have all lived through. We are very fortunate despite these very unique circumstances and we will all pull through this.

When it comes to fantasy football you should be thankful if your top draft picks have played like stars this year, if you have avoided major injuries throughout the season, and if you have a playoff spot secured.

Count your blessings if you have players like Dalvin Cook (RB Vikings), Patrick Mahomes (QB Chiefs), DeAndre Hopkins (WR Cardinals) or Derrick Henry (RB Titans).

Be grateful if you had the foresight to select players such as Stefan Diggs (WR Bills), Terry McLaurin (WR Washington), DJ Moore (WR Panthers), James Robinson (RB Jaguars), or Ronald Jones (RB Buccaneers).

Most of all though we should just be thankful we got football and fantasy football this year when the world is upside down. In all seriousness though, be thankful for all the great things we have even as we currently work our way through all of the struggles we are enduring in our country. Happy Thanksgiving!

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 9 preview

Breaking down who to start and sit and offering fantasy football advice for Week 9

Often times some people will focus mostly on statistics when it comes to fantasy football, but during your fantasy season there is normally a certain natural feel for the game that you need to have in order to win.

When should you bench certain players? When do you need to cut ties on underperforming stars? How to value trade offers? There are no numbers or analytics that can fully answer those important questions, but those owners that deal with the ups and downs of a season the best are often there at the end of the season fighting for the championship.

Lions at Vikings fantasy focus

The Detroit Lions continue their season of ups and downs. They continue to preach consistency, but the team as a whole has been anything but consistent in 2020 and this goes for their fantasy football performers as well.

Looking at this week’s game against the Minnesota Vikings, there are a few key fantasy options on both sides. Dalvin Cook (RB Vikings) and Adam Thielen (WR Vikings) are two crucial pieces for Minnesota. Adrian Peterson (RB Lions) and T.J. Hockenson (TE Lions) will be players to consider for your lineups when it comes to the Lions this week.

Recent games in Minnesota have often not been fun at all for Matthew Stafford, and he will have to be very good to give the Lions a chance this week. Dalvin Cook won many fantasy owners their matchup last week where he had over 200 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, which is an amazing game. Will Cook be able to have a similar game against the Lions poor ranking rush defense?

Keep your eye on a few of these key players, but with no Kenny Golladay (WR Lions) and Stefon Diggs, the former Vikings wide receiver now in Buffalo, this isn’t a very exciting fantasy football matchup when you look at it on paper.

New Orleans at Tampa Bay, Sunday 8:20 PM, EST

  • NO: Drew Brees (QB), Michael Thomas (WR)
  • TB: Tom Brady (QB), Antonio Brown (WR)

Bottom Line

Don’t get so fixated on the past statistics that you forget about what might happen in the future. Don’t focus so much on the numbers that you forget that feel for the ups and downs of fantasy football and the NFL as a whole.

When looking over your roster, place a good amount of value on those consistent players that always seem to come through week after week. Consider cutting those players that are very inconsistent.

These immeasurable aspects of fantasy football are often what help decide who makes the playoffs and who doesn’t. If you have a good feeling about a player, don’t always ignore that when the analytics say otherwise. A consistent team that also isn’t afraid to bold at times is often one that wins. That is true not just in fantasy football but also on the actual gridiron.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 8 preview

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 8 preview

Have you ever been in a fantasy football matchup where it was coming down to the wire with only a small percentage to win, but one of your players makes a big play, and all of sudden you pull out an amazing last-second win?

There is nothing better than that thrilling win where moments earlier you felt you were about to suffer a tough loss. The Detroit Lions experienced this against the Atlanta Falcons last week, and most likely many fantasy owners did too.

Whether it was Tyler Lockett (WR Seahawks) having a big game on Sunday night, or a late score by the Bears defense —  it’s never until it’s over both in the NFL and especially in fantasy football.

Lions vs. Colts fantasy focus

The Lions have won two games in a row, and players such as T.J. Hockenson, D’Andre Swift, and Kenny Golladay have been a big reason why. If you look at those three players you see three key pieces for the Lions future and for fantasy football.

The Indianapolis Colts also have some unique fantasy players when you look at Jonathan Taylor (RB), Paris Campbell (WR), and Michael Pittman Jr.(WR). Those three players are also key components to that team’s future and to dynasty fantasy football owners too.

I feel the Lions have the more explosive offense and the Colts have shown to be a solid defense this year. The question is if Matthew Stafford can put up yards and points needed against a Colts defense that allows under 200 yards passing per game through Week 7

I see the Lions being able to score with their offensive weapons all healthy. In fantasy football consider playing a guy like Marvin Jones Jr or even Kerryon Johnson. I think they each could be sneaky sleepers this week. I see this being a close game where the Lions have just enough to win.

Tampa Bay at NY Giants, Monday 8:15 PM, EST

  • TB: Tom Brady (QB), Ronald Jones (RB)
  • NYG: Sterling Shepard (WR), Golden Tate (WR)

Bottom Line

Despite the score, your fantasy team always has a chance if it’s close. If you suffered some tough injuries this week, you still aren’t out of it if you have depth on your roster or are willing to make some trades.

Key Injuries to be aware of and keep your eye on:

Odell Beckham Jr. (WR Browns)
Chris Godwin (WR Buccaneers)
Allen Robinson (WR Bears)
Deebo Samuel (WR 49ers)
Kenyan Drake (RB Cardinals)
Joe Mixon (RB Bengals)
Phillip Lindsay (RB Broncos)
Dallas Goedert (TE Eagles)

Always hang in there despite the score, injuries, or any other circumstances. As the Lions learned again this past week, as with fantasy football always coming down to a few points here and there. You just never know what might happen when it’s all said and done.

Lions Wire Fantasy Football Weekly: 2020 Week 7 preview

A deep look at this week’s fantasy option for the Lions and around the league

We are back to a regular week in the NFL after multiple occurrences of COVID-19 that juggled schedules, and that is music to the ears of fantasy football owners. The normal Thursday-Sunday-Monday games are a welcome sight to the unusual game schedule and reschedules that we have had the past couple of weeks. This week has a great slate of games.

Injuries again are a big concern for fantasy owners in Week 7 and managing injuries is always a key to fantasy football success. Players such as Zach Ertz (TE Eagles), Miles Sanders (RB Eagles), Curtis Samuel (WR Panthers), Raheem Mostert (RB 49ers), Baker Mayfield (QB Browns), and Jonnu Smith (TE Titans) are all dealing with ailments that might impact your lineup.

Let’s take a look at some important roster decisions, waiver wire options, and dive deeper into a big game for the Detroit Lions as they travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons on this week’s edition of the Fantasy Football Weekly.

Lions at Falcons fantasy focus

The Lions are coming off a win in Jacksonville and are looking to stack another win on top of that against the Falcons. Speaking of stacks, that is a new trend in fantasy football where owners will try to stack multiple players from one team that they think could have a great week. Here are a few fantasy football stacks that might help your lineup in this matchup.

Atlanta Falcons Stacks:

Matt Ryan QB, Julio Jones WR and Hayden Hurst TE

Matt Ryan QB, Todd Gurley RB and Calvin Ridley WR

Detroit Lions Stacks:

Matthew Stafford QB, Kenny Golladay WR and T.J. Hockenson TE

Matthew Stafford QB, D’Andre Swift RB and Marvin Jones WR

This game sets up to be a fun one to watch and one where you should load up your fantasy football lineups with all the Falcons and Lions that you can. It’s in a dome atmosphere, so expect both passing games to feast on the opposing defenses. Points will be scored in bunches during this game, and the Lions really need to try to stack another win this week against a struggling Falcons football team.

  • CHI: David Montgomery (RB), Nick Foles (QB)
  • LAR: Cam Akers (RB), Josh Reynolds (WR)

Bottom Line

When you are setting up your lineup this week, check to see if you can stack a few players from a good offense. Quarterback and wide receiver are often the best stacks to use, but a dynamic pass-catching running back along with an elite quarterback is an interesting stack to look for too.

Can the Lions stack another victory to get back to sea level this season? Matt Ryan and Matthew Stafford are friends, have had similar careers, and both will probably play well on Sunday. Look for a fun game in “Hotlanta” where the Lions hope to outscore the Falcons and have their defense hold on in the end.

The injuries this week are a major concern along with the bye weeks, so check your waiver wire and lineups leading up to the games this week. Tons of good matchups to enjoy this week. Sit back, relax, and enjoy some football this weekend. We are nearly at the halfway point, so every win counts. Good luck everyone and try your best to stack another win this week in fantasy football.
