Fantasy Football Consistency Rankings – Running Backs

Running backs are the most consistent of all positions since they handle the ball the most. But which backs were money almost every week?

This ranking considers running backs that started at least 10 games in 2023. Fantasy points were derived using one point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions. Running backs may be devalued in fantasy and the NFL, but they are still likely the most consistent players on your team.

Only nine backs topped 15 fantasy points in more than half of their games. While top fantasy scorers are obviously well represented, Alvin Kamara, Rachaad White, James Conner, and Tony Pollard were in that group. Only six running backs managed that mark last year and just Christian McCaffrey and Derrick Henry repeated from 2022. Five years ago, there were 11 that hit the mark and seven that exceeded 80%. Now there is only one.

The volatility from year to year is dramatic.  And the truly consistent with high production have all but disappeared.

No question why Christian McCaffrey is a top draft pick every summer. Kyren Williams was the biggest surprise even though Blake Corum may interfere this season. There’s been several player moves that will make repeating the above marks in 2024. Saquon Barkley, Joe Mixon and Austin Ekeler changed teams. The annual influx of young (and cheap) running back talent also could erode some of the workloads.

Fantasy Football Consistency Rankings – Quarterbacks

It’s not how many points, but how often can a quarterback help your fantasy team win.

This ranking considers quarterbacks that started at least 11 games. Fantasy points were derived using one point per 20 yards passed or 10 yards rushed, six-point touchdowns rushed and four-point passed. There are not a lot of surprises since there are only 32 starting quarterbacks, and it is notable even when there isn’t a dramatic difference between quarterbacks.

Consistency is more important in head-to-head fantasy leagues where weekly wins and losses translate into the playoffs.

Patrick Mahomes had a down year, comparatively, after being a resident Top-3 in 25 point games each season. Jalen Hurts and Josh Allen returned again from 2023 as the most consistently good fantasy quarterbacks and the only ones that managed the feat in more than half of their games.

C.J. Stroud was surprisingly low at 27% but he threw a healthy nine games with two or more touchdowns. Adding in Dak Prescott, Jordan Love and Brock Purdy, those five quarterbacks were the only ones with more than five games of 25-point outputs.

Stroud was tied with Derek Carr for six 300-yard games and he did it while missing two weeks. Patrick Mahomes logged ten 300-yard efforts in 2023 but that was an outlier. Even top quarterbacks rarely have more than five or six 300-yard performances.

Consistent wideouts are key to a high fantasy scoring every week.

This ranking considers wide receivers that started at least 11 games in 2023. Fantasy points were derived using one point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns and one point receptions. The consistency in scoring at least 15 fantasy points per game declined rapidly.

Wide receivers have become more consistent as the NFL becomes more vested in their passing offenses. Amon-Ra St. Brown led this metric by a healthy amount while CeeDee Lamb and Tyreek Hill both shined as well. Justin Jefferson was at the top of every category after 2022 but dropped due to injury and now contends with a rookie quarterback. Even though he missed seven games, he was still the No. 4 wideout for consistency.

Tank Dell only played in ten games but broke his leg. But he ended as the No. 5 wideout in consistency.  There were thirteen wideouts with more than 50% consistency. But that shows for consistent points from your receivers, you need to pick one from the first two rounds.

Tyreek Hill, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and CeeDee Lamb were featured in all categories. But Mike Evans tied for No. 3 in 25-point games and Mike Evans tied for No. 1 with 11 games with a touchdown. Almost a quarter of starting quarterbacks are new to their team, so there may be more consistency changes for 2024 than recent years.

Fantasy Football Consistency Rankings – Tight Ends

A difference-maker at tight is rare, but a consistently good tight end is even more advantageous.

This ranking considers tight ends that started at least 11 games in 2023. Fantasy points were derived using one point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions. Given that the position supplies only around 10 players of any fantasy note, there aren’t a lot of surprises here.

T.J. Hockenson was the most consistent tight end in 2023. But his knee injury may force him to miss a sizable chunk of this season.  Mark Andrews broke his leg as well, but is expected back. David Njoku had few big games but was one of the most consistent tight ends and Sam LaPorta shattered what we expect from a rookie. Nine tight ends managed over 10 points in more than half of their games, so most fantasy teams should avoid from having the position as a liability.

Travis Kelce may have dropped last year, but he was still elite regardless. There’s consistency from year to year with upper-tier in the position because those players have proven to be a big part of their offense’s passing scheme.

A twenty-point game is a monster performance for this position and while George Kittle rated only No. 7 and Trey McBride No. 11 in ten point games, they were the only tight ends with four 20-point performances.  For McBride, the second-rounder from 2023 is only getting started in his career. Fellow rookie Sam LaPorta was even better, logging seven games with a touchdown when no other tight end had more than five.

To get any production from a fantasy tight end is hard enough, and those elite fantasy starters are very few and rarely change. Travis Kelce regained his No. 1 standing last year after Mark Andrews stole it in 2021. Kelce is a first-round lock this summer as a premier difference-maker.

The rest of the tight ends fared much worse. Mark Andrews slid backwards in the second half of the season, Kyle Pitts followed up his historic rookie season with a sophomore flop, and the position overall became even less a fantasy resource. Ten-point efforts don’t seem that much compared to other positions, but only six tight ends managed to turn in as much in over half of their games. And Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, and Greg Dulcich were no fantasy difference-makers.

The interesting players in this metric were Gerald Everett, Tyler Higbee and Hayden Hurst, who managed six games with at least five catches. But, again, the position is offering fewer and fewer difference-makers, and even the elite level has been in flux other than for Kelce.

The wide receiver position has seen an increase in production in recent years and have overtaken the running backs in many cases. There were 11 wideouts that topped 15 fantasy points in most of their games and a number of surprises were seen in how often they had that “good” game.

Justin Jefferson, Tyreek Hill and Ja’Marr Chase dominated the leaderboard last year and show up as such in fantasy drafts. But those most consistent wideouts included Tyler Lockett, Keenan Allen, and Christian Kirk.

Jahan Dotson, Jerry Jeudy, Chris Olave and Amari Cooper show up better in this measurement than they did in total points.

It is notable that many of the most consistent receivers from 2021 did not repeat – Deebo Samuel, Diontae Johnson, Hunter Renfrow and Brandin Cooks did not meet expectations but almost all had quarterback changes if not new offensive schemes to learn.

Monster games were heavily slanted toward Justin Jefferson, Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill, Ja’Marr Chase, and A.J. Brown. They combined for 30 games with at least 25 points. That was as many as all other wideouts who managed just two or three such performances.

CeeDee Lamb led all wideouts with at least five catches in 15 games and Chris Godwin was second with a total of 14. Godwin faces life without Tom Brady, and Lamb has to share with Brandin Cooks this year in an offense that purports to want even more rushing.

Fantasy Football Consistency Rankings – Running Backs

Running backs are the most consistent of all positions since they handle the ball the most. But which backs were money almost every week?

This ranking considers running backs that started at least 10 games in 2022 Fantasy points were derived using one point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions. Running backs may be devalued in fantasy and the NFL, but they are still likely the most consistent players on your team.

The Big 4 – Christian McCaffrey, Austin Ekeler, Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry – all shined in consistency as expected. But Rhamondre Stevenson, Ezekiel Elliott, and James Conner were surprisingly effective with 15-point efforts. Josh Jacobs managed a career-year and yet was only No. 6 when considering how often he had a high-point performance. That’s the effect of big games on total points.

But the dialing back of workhorse backs continued with only six backs topping those 15 points in more than half of their games. There were 14 such backs in 2021, and that’s a major reason why the position is coming so much cheaper this summer.

We also saw those top backs of 2021 suffer major decline with major fantasy-point drops from Jonathan Taylor, Najee Harris, Alvin Kamara, and Darrell Henderson.

A top running back is still an advantage, but the drop-off happens more quickly than in prior years. Derrick Henry and Nick Chubb remain elite rushers who don’t add much as receivers, but it still gives them better consistency from week to week.

As it worked out, taking a top-three quarterback last year was a difference maker from week to week. The drop-off was significant with no other quarterbacks managing to score at least 25 fantasy points in at least half of their games. And that fact translates into those three – Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, and Jalen Hurts all being taken during the initial rounds of fantasy drafts.

That’s not to say the rest didn’t also turn in great fantasy years, but they were a bit more reliant on either the occasional big game or falling just short of that 25 fantasy-point mark.

Consistency Rankings – Running Backs

Running backs are the most consistent of all positions since they handle the ball the most. But which backs were money almost every week?

This ranking considers running backs that started at least  10 games in 2021 with the exception of Derrick Henry and Christian McCaffrey who were included due to their prominence on fantasy teams. Fantasy points were derived using 1 point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions.

There’s a lot to like about a rookie on a bad offense that tied for the most consistent fantasy play. Najee Harris rolled back the clock to when workhorse backs ruled and doesn’t seem likely to have the offense around him improve dramatically in 2022.

Notable too was Darrell Henderson as one of the more consistent contributors filling in for Cam Akers who should inherit that workload now that he is healthy again.

D’Andre Swift also managed 54% rate on games with 15+ fantasy points and should be in a position to improve for this season.

On the downside, Saquon Barkley’s mostly injured 2021 season was a fantasy disaster and his second year of disappointment. Chase Edmonds started the season as the No. 1 back in Arizona but only managed 25% of his games as productive and now joins a very crowded backfield in Miami.

The impact of the split backfield in Denver shows up with both Melvin Gordon and Javonte Williams taking turns with notable fantasy production.

Austin Ekeler stayed healthy last season and ranked highly in any running back metric. Same for Joe Mixon coming off his career-best performance. Derrick Henry missed nine games and yet was still third-best with 25+ fantasy points in four different matchups. Despite the addition of an extra game on the schedule, there were only five backs with more than 1,000 rushing yards and Ezekiel Elliott snuck in with 1,002 yards.

Consistency Rankings – Wide Receivers

Consistent wideouts are key to a high fantasy scoring every week

This ranking considers wide receivers  that started at least  11 games in 2021. Fantasy points were derived using 1 point per 10 yards rushed or received, six-point touchdowns rushed and one point receptions. The consistency in scoring at least 15 fantasy points per game declined rapidly.

The Top-8 receivers in 15-point games almost all have something different going on this season. Deebo Samuel is unhappy despite being wildly productive. Diontae Johnson lost his quarterback, Davante Adams changed teams, Chris Godwin comes off ACL surgery in an offense that promises to run more often and Jaylen Waddle suddenly has Tyreek Hill in front of him (though the ex-Chief only managed 41% in consistency).

Still, all the top-scoring fantasy wideouts of 2021 appear well in the metric. There were 15 receivers that managed 15+ points in at least half of their games, almost as many as the running backs (17).

Even DeAndre Hopkins hit the 50% mark in his down year. The biggest factor in consistent fantasy scoring wasn’t touchdowns or even yardage, but clearly receptions.

There 15 receivers with five catches in at least ten games, and that bodes well for Michael Pittman who’s trended up despite inheriting a new aging veteran at quarterback each year.  Cooper Kupp’s domination at the position is evident above when he topped every category.

The other receivers that fared well with high-catch games included Darnell Mooney, Hunter Renfrow, D.J. Moore, Brandin Cooks and Marquise Brown who slides over to the Cardinals for 2022 while Rashod Bateman steps up to the Ravens’ No. 1 wideout spot.
