Broncos express condolences after death of Don Shula

Don Shula, the father of Broncos quarterbacks coach Mike Shula, died on Monday.

Don Shula, the winningest coach in NFL history, died Monday morning. He was 90 years old.

Shula posted a win-loss-tie record of 328-156-6 during his 33-year career. He reached six Super Bowls in his career, winning two of them. He also won an NFL Championship in 1968 before Super Bowls existed.

Shula coached the Baltimore Colts (1963-1969) and Miami Dolphins (1970–1995). He and his wife, Dorothy, had five children, including two sons. Both of his sons — Dave and Mike — are coaches.

Mike currently serves as the Denver Broncos’ quarterbacks coach. He previously worked as the offensive coordinator for the New York Giants (2018–2019) and Carolina Panthers (2013–2017).

“We join the NFL community in expressing our sincere condolences to the family of legendary Pro Football Hall of Fame Coach Don Shula,” the Broncos wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Our hearts especially go out to his son, Broncos Quarterbacks Coach Mike Shula.”

Denver hired Mike Shula in January. He previously worked with offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur in New York.

Taysom Hill thanks Saints, announces new contract extension

New Orleans Saints quarterback Taysom Hill thanked the team for the opportunity they’ve given him with his new two-year contract extension.

The New Orleans Saints reached an agreement with backup quarterback Taysom Hill on a two-year contract extension, and he was excited to sign the offer they put on the table.

Hill announced the new deal from his official Instagram account, thanking the team for the opportunity and the chance they took on him. Hill first joined the Saints as an older prospect out of college who had already washed out of one NFL team. Now he’s the projected starter once Drew Brees hangs up his cleats, possibly as soon as in 2021.

Cooking in a COVID-19 Crisis

Are you running out of recipes? Unsure whether to eat out or cook at home? Torn between supporting local restaurants versus braving the grocery store aisles? Here’s day one of a solution, complete with an easy recipe for your family during this crisis.

Photo by Sara Cervera on Unsplash

Day One

When I look at most recipes online or in cookbooks I pass. In fact, I’ve always said that I read cookbooks as though they are works of fiction. Beautiful photos, striking ideas, flavors that sound delicious—but ingredients and instructions that are far beyond what I have any desire to do.

Even in these days of #stayathome, I’m still working, doing my share of hours-long Zoom meetings and following through with my assignments. In fact, I think that there is an extra burst of creativity in some of my work, since I’ve cut out the commute, the make-up, even the getting dressed—like a good part of America. Which means I still don’t have the pure time it takes to do a lot of cooking, let alone the ability to shop for ingredients or equipment (is saffron an essential? Hmmm).

Then there’s the argument that we should be supporting local restauranteurs as much as possible. We’ve done our share of take out and, in fact, have spent a somewhat exorbitant amount on extra tips. We even bought Easter dinner from one of our finer dining establishments, because when else can we sample their variety and easily store the leftovers?

However, I am actually cooking more than usual. As I follow social media, it seems the world is, as well. I see comments about how kitchen appliances have never had such a work out, and how dishwasher detergent should have been what was hoarded. I see people seeking recipes and worrying because they, too, are working AND teaching their children AND preparing not just one, but often three meals a day. No wonder the stats show hot dog sales have been up.

So, without benefit of photos, I’ll take a few days to post simple recipes that are doable with simple ingredients. This is not to say that “simple” is a new idea, but some of these are geared to my own #stayhome experience. If nothing else, perhaps this will help a few of my friends as I share what’s worked for me. Here goes day one, with a recipe that crosses both the home kitchen and the restaurant world.

Spaghetti &  Meatballs in the time of COVID-19

Don’t have time for prep and want to support a local restaurant? Here’s how.

Step 1: Call any local sub shop and order deconstructed meatball sub sandwiches, one per person you  are feeding. Arrange for curbside pick-up or delivery. (We used Firehouse Subs because their meatball subs are really good).

Step 2: Open a jar of spaghetti sauce and put the meatballs in the sauce to warm them back up.

Step 3: Prepare a salad and dressing to accompany the meal (if desired)

Step 4: Take the sandwich bread and turn it into garlic bread, spreading a garlic/butter mixture on it. Just before serving time, broil the bread to melt the butter and make it toasty. Your deconstructed sandwich may come with cheese, and you can use it on the bread for cheesy-garlic bread.

Step 4: Cook your spaghetti (we like thin spaghetti or angel hair) according to package directions.

Step 5: Serve salad, spaghetti with sauce and meatballs, add a little Parmesan cheese to taste, and you have a meal! Add dessert if you’ve been baking then suggest the family do clean-up, and go back to binge-watching Tiger King.

Ingredients needed from your pantry (or the grocery store):

  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Spaghetti noodles
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Prepared garlic
  • Butter
  • Salad/salad dressing ingredients

You can dress up  your  bread with a sprinkle of sweet paprika or Italian spices. You can use garlic powder or the jarred garlic pieces. You can even get Italian sausage and cook it up  in small pieces to throw in if you want to extend the meal—or buy prepared meatballs from the meat department. There are countless ways to make a simple Italian meal your own.

Be sure to plan ahead and limit your trips to the grocery store, and be safe out there!

This video of Peyton and Eli Manning playing basketball is hilarious

Check out this funny video of Peyton and Eli Manning playing basketball together.

“The Checkdown,” one of the NFL’s social media pages, posted a funny throwback video of Peyton and Eli Manning playing a game of knockout last week. It drew some classic comments on social media.

“Eli laughs like a little brother 😂” @Ausalvano wrote.

“You can really tell Eli is the younger sibling with his boyish giggles,” @5mittyWi11 added.

“Wow, Peyton has no Basketball skills! LOL” @tolle_jeff quipped.

Peyton won two Super Bowls — one with the Colts and one with the Broncos — and Eli won two Super Bowls as well — both with the Giants. Clearly, these football-loving brothers aren’t basketball phenoms.

With no OTAs, Broncos QB Jeff Driskel is throwing with his brother in Orlando

Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel is having his brother “pay rent” by catching passes from him.

In an effort to slow down the spread of COVID-19, the NFL has suspended offseason programs indefinitely. Broncos starting quarterback Drew Lock had planned to get together with teammates for offseason workouts but he decided it wouldn’t be socially responsible for them to travel to a central location.

So Denver players are staying put and working out on their own. Broncos backup quarterback Jeff Driskel is in Orlando, working out with his brother, Jason.

“I’m pretty hunkered down in the house doing my workout stuff like weights and running, stuff like that just at my house and the little park that’s near my house,” Driskel said during a conference call with reporters on March 26. “My brother is actually — he’s staying with me right now because he was in Miami. Miami was kind of the worst of it in Florida.

“He’s working remotely from my house right now. He’s paying rent in the form of catching me up. That’s how I’m keeping my arm alive and moving. It is a lot different. It’s something we all have to adapt to. We just have to figure it out on the move.”

Driskel also sent his home workout routine to Lock to help his new teammate stay in shape during isolation. The league remains hopeful that the 2020 season will still go on as scheduled but it remains to be seen if that will be practical. In the meantime, players will continue preparing as if the season will take place as scheduled.

There are plenty of songs to be found online,
and dancing around with your kids can be a good

Joe Flacco’s little brother, Tom, chasing NFL dream

Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, hasn’t given up on his dream of reaching the NFL.

Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Broncos quarterback Joe Flacco, is hoping to get a shot in the NFL this spring.

A two-year starter at Towson, Flacco was not invited to the combine and he’s unlikely to be selected in April’s draft. That hasn’t discouraged his dream of going pro.

“I am focused on one thing and one thing only, that’s making it in the NFL,” Flacco said in an interview with The Baltimore Sun‘s Mike Preston. “People might think I am crazy, but I’ve spoken with a lot of successful people and they are said they were driven to one thing, and that was their focus. That’s me. I am committed to football.”

Flacco totaled 6,082 passing yards and 50 touchdowns against 17 interceptions during his time with the Tigers.

Perhaps due in part to his last name, Flacco should get an invitation to some team’s rookie minicamp this spring. That invitation seems unlikely to come from the Broncos.

Drew Lock will be Denver’s starter in 2020 and general manager John Elway has said he would like to add a veteran to serve as the team’s backup. That would presumably leave Brandon Allen and Brett Rypien to compete for QB3 duties.

The Broncos have brought a “camp arm” to training camps in the past but it’s hard to imagine the team carrying five QBs, even in the offseason. If Allen is brought back, Denver would be unlikely to sign a QB like Flacco.

Vic Fangio attended Nuggets game with Bradley Chubb

Broncos coach Vic Fangio attended a Nuggets game with outside linebacker Bradley Chubb on Monday.

Two weeks after attending a Colorado Buffaloes basketball game with running back Phillip Lindsay, Denver Broncos coach Vic Fangio attended a Denver Nuggets basketball game with outside linebacker Bradley Chubb on Monday evening.

The Nuggets defeated the Milwaukee Bucks 109-95 and Colorado basketball teams improved to 2-0 in games attended by Fangio this spring. Fangio showed support for the hometown team by standing until the Nuggets’ first score.

Fangio is clearly making an effort to connect with players this offseason.

Chubb is still recovering from an ACL injury and he won’t be able to do on-field work this spring but should be back in time for Week 1.

“I’m just hoping to feel the best I possibly can by the season’s start,” Chubb said of his recovery timeline on Dec. 30. “I’m not trying to put OTAs, camp or a date or anything. I’m just trying to feel 100 percent and make sure I’m good and the team’s good.”
