Falcons training camp: Day 3 highlight roundup

Atlanta Falcons training camp: Rounding up highlights from Friday’s open practice.

As they say, you only get one chance to make a first impression. Falcons fans got their first look at this year’s team during Friday’s open camp practice — the first of Atlanta’s 13 scheduled open training camp events.

Most NFL analysts have low expectations for this Falcons team, but the fans are cautiously optimistic after a franchise-changing offseason. And while new starting QB Marcus Mariota isn’t as accomplished as his predecessor, Matt Ryan, Mariota has athletic ability beyond anything Ryan has ever dreamed of.

Check out highlights from Friday’s open practice below, as shared by the Falcons’ social media team and D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Falcons Training Camp: Takeaways from Day 1 of practice

Major takeaways from the Atlanta Falcons’ first training camp practice.

The Falcons began their much-anticipated second training camp under head coach Arthur Smith on Wednesday as the team looks to improve upon last year’s 7-10 campaign.

Atlanta also signed a defensive tackle to beef up the middle of the team’s defensive line following Eddie Goldman’s surprise retirement last week. Here are the major takeaways from the Falcons’ first training camp practice.

Watch: Falcons QB Matt Ryan mic’d up at training camp

To help give fans a preview of what’s in store, the Falcons mic’d up Ryan for the early portion of training camp

Holding a top-five pick in this year‘s quarterback-heavy draft class, the Atlanta Falcons passed on the chance to select Matt Ryan’s successor. And while rookie quarterbacks tend to generate the most headlines, the Falcons are happy to have their veteran signal-caller as the team adapts to a new coaching staff.

Ryan, 36, didn’t have his best season in 2020, but the former MVP is one of the most prolific passers in NFL history and consistently been among the league’s top 10 quarterbacks for over a decade.

Falcons vs. Raiders: Week 12 hype video

The Atlanta Falcons will look for their fourth win of the season when they host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12 from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Atlanta Falcons will look for their fourth win of the season when they host the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 12. After splitting the first 14 matchups, the winner of Sunday’s game will take the series lead.

In Week 11, both teams were defeated by hated division rivals. The Raiders lost a close game to the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-31, while the Falcons are coming off a 24-9 road loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Atlanta needs to pretty much run the table in order to have a shot at the playoffs. While that seems highly unlikely due to a brutal schedule, crazier things have happened in 2020. Check out this Week 12 Falcons hype video, as shared by the team’s Twitter account below.

Dante Fowler explains why he chose the Falcons in free agency

The Atlanta Falcons desperately needed to upgrade their pass rush after finishing with just 28 sacks in 2019, and did so by signing free-agent defensive end Dante Fowler.

The Atlanta Falcons desperately needed to upgrade their pass rush after finishing with just 28 sacks in 2019, and did so by signing free-agent defensive end Dante Fowler.

He replaces Vic Beasley — the team’s sack leader last season — who signed with the Tennessee Titans during the offseason. Fowler, 26, is coming off of a career-high 11.5 sacks with the Rams. The Falcons inked the former No. 3 overall pick to a three-year, $45 million contract back in March.

The move reunites Fowler with head coach Dan Quinn, who recruited and coached Fowler at the University of Florida. Clearly, the two developed a mutual respect for each other during their time together in Gainesville.

Fowler joined NFL Network’s Good Morning Football program to talk about his offseason decision to sign in Atlanta. Watch the video segment below, as shared by GMFB’s Twitter account.

Falcons 2020 training camp: Calvin Ridley highlights

Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley isn’t shying away from expectations as he enters his third NFL season.

Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley isn’t shying away from expectations as he enters his third NFL season. The former Alabama standout is one of the league’s premier route-runners, but has primarily been the third receiving option since joining the team in 2018.

That should change in 2020 with TE Austin Hooper and WR Mohamed Sanu out of the picture. Over his first two seasons, Ridley has caught 127 balls for 1,687 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns.

Since it’s a slow news day, the Falcons’ Twitter account was kind enough to drop a new Ridley highlight video from training camp. Check it out below.
