Instant analysis: Josh Rosen, Kyle Pitts shine in Falcons’ preseason finale

Let’s see how all three phases performed during the Falcons’ preseason finale against the Browns.

The Atlanta Falcons may have lost their preseason finale to the Cleveland Browns, but the game still feels like a success due to the stellar debuts of rookie Kyle Pitts and quarterback Josh Rosen.

Let’s see how all three phases of the team performed against the Browns on Sunday night.

Watch: QB Josh Rosen throws Falcons’ first preseason TD pass

Watch as Rosen connects with wide receiver Juwan Green while evading pressure off his back foot.

Through the first two preseason games, the Falcons’ offense has only scored two touchdowns, and both of those touchdowns came on the ground in Week 2. Following AJ McCarron’s ACL tear, Atlanta signed quarterback Josh Rosen to battle Feleipe Franks for the backup job. The former top-10 pick has looked impressive against the Cleveland Browns, throwing some accurate passes with plenty of zip.

Watch below as Rosen connects with wide receiver Juwan Green while evading pressure off his back foot to score the Falcons’ first passing touchdown of the preseason.

So far, Rosen has gone seven for 12, for 94 yards with one score.

Falcons’ Matt Ryan, Grady Jarrett among key players out vs. Browns

While a number of starters did make their preseason debut, Matt Ryan, Grady Jarrett and Calvin Ridley did not.

After sitting the majority of their starters in the first two preseason games, many expected things to be different in the Atlanta Falcons’ preseason finale. Earlier in the week, Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said just about everybody would play, although he left himself some wiggle room.

While a number of starters did make their exhibition debut, the following players did not:

  • QB Matt Ryan
  • WR Calvin Ridley
  • LT Jake Matthews
  • DT Grady Jarrett
  • LB Deion Jones
  • Safety Erik Harris
  • Safety Duron Harmon

Running back Mike Davis got the start at running back, however, he was quickly subbed out after one play. The same thing happened to wide receiver Russell Gage. It may be disappointing to fans, but after seeing AJ McCarron and JK Dobbins go down with season-ending injuries, it’s easy to see why Smith elects to sit these key players.

Falcons highlights: Dwayne Johnson Jr. gets interception, fumbles

Falcons safety Dwayne Johnson Jr. recorded an interception but would fumble the ball while returning the pick.

The Falcons defense has kept the offense in the game thus far. A couple of plays after Kobe Jones’ interception that he quickly fumbled, safety Dwayne Johnson Jr. recorded an interception and he too would fumble the ball in the process.

However, this time the Falcons would recover the fumble. While the interception looks good on Johnson Jr.’s resume, his battle for the Falcons 53-man roster is a lost one due to all four spots being filled already. Still, check out the interception below via the Falcons’ Twitter account.

Falcons rookie Jalen Mayfield fills in for Josh Andrews at LG

It appears the Falcons may have suffered a minor injury setback as starting left guard Josh Andrews walked off the field during practice.

The Atlanta Falcons appeared to have suffered a minor setback as starting left guard Josh Andrews exited the team’s joint practice with the Miami Dolphins early on Wednesday with an apparent injury. Andrews would not return and in his absence, rookie Jalen Mayfield stepped in at guard.

Mayfield began practicing at left guard earlier in the week after taking 27 offensive snaps at right tackle in the Falcons’ Week 1 loss to the Titans. A switch to left guard permanently could be in store for the rookie lineman with right tackle Kaleb McGary back in the fold.

UPDATE: Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said Andrews was cramping up and that’s why he left the field.
