Report: FAU to hire ex-Giant Everett Withers as assistant head coach

Former New York Giants DB coach Everett Withers is joining FAU as their assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator.

Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is set to hire former New York Giants defensive backs coach Everett Withers as their assistant head coach and defensive passing game coordinator.

Pete Thamel of ESPN was the first to report the news.

The 59-year-old Withers spent the 2019 season with the Giants under then-head coach Pat Shurmur. He worked alongside defensive coordinator James Bettcher, while Henry Baker served as his assistant defensive backs coach.

The Giants, who finished 4-12 that season, sported the fifth-worst passing defense in 2019. They allowed a total of 4,225 yards passing and 30 touchdowns.

Shurmur was fired following the season and the majority of his staff, including Withers, were also let go.

After his time with the Giants, Withers joined Texas as an analyst. He then went on to serve as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for FIU (2021) and assistant head coach for Temple (2022).

Longhorns to hire new offensive analyst, part ways with Corby Meekins

Texas football is expected to hire former Texas State coach Everett Withers as an offensive analyst.

Although the primary assistant coaching jobs have been filled, head coach Tom Herman must now hire a new offensive analyst.

Corby Meekins was expected to fill this role for the 2020 season. According to Rivals reporter Anwar Richardson, Meekins has accepted a position as the tight ends coach at the University of Houston.

Meekins served as an assistant coach for the wide receivers and tight ends throughout his three-year tenure at Texas. Due to his departure from his newly-designated support staff role, the Longhorns are expected to hire long-time coach Everett Withers.

Withers was most recently the defensive backs coach for the New York Giants, but previously served as the head coach for Texas State, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and James Madison University.

Although Withers didn’t have much success at Texas State, he led James Madison to a conference title in 2015 with an overall record of nine 9-3.

It’s not his first stint in Austin. In 1998, Withers served as the Longhorns defensive backs coach. He is widely considered a great football mind who should make an excellent addition to Herman’s support staff.

Welcome back, coach.

Report: Giants part ways with three more assistant coaches

The New York Giants have parted ways with three more assistant coaches, including one that had survived since the Tom Coughlin era.

The purge of Pat Shurmur’s former New York Giants staff continued on Wednesday with news that outside linebackers coach Mike Dawson, defensive backs coach Everett Withers and offensive assistant Ryan Roeder will not return in 2020.

The trio join linebackers coach Bill McGovern, defensive line coach Gary Emanuel and assistant defensive backs coach Henry Baker as assistants who have been informed they will not return.

Tight ends coach Lunda Well also departed on Wednesday, joining the Dallas Cowboys in the same role.

Dawson and Withers joined Shurmur’s staff in February of 2019, while Roeder had been with the team since 2013, serving under Tom Coughlin, Ben McAdoo and then, of course, Shurmur.
