Five recruits that Texas should fill out their 2022 class with

With the way scholarships work on a yearly basis, Texas has somewhere around five left. Here is who they should fill their 2022 class out with.

Monday was a giant swing in momentum for Texas’ recruiting before the season began. Jaray Bledsoe and J’Mond Tapp, both four-star defensive linemen, announced their commitments on Monday, nearly putting Bo Davis on a heater. “Balls back,” as they say.

With 20 commitments now in the class, Texas is up to No. 6 in the 247Sports composite rankings*. Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama are the only programs ahead at the moment.

*It’s important to note Texas’ average recruit rank is the second-lowest of any team in the top 10 and fourth lowest of anybody in the top 15.

With the way scholarships work on a yearly basis, the Longhorns have somewhere around five left. Numbers can shift around, especially with two special team products contributing to the count at the moment.

If five is truly the number, Texas must hone in on a few elite prospects to take the class to a different level, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Steve Sarkisian not capitalizing on the great in-state offensive talent would be a disappointment.

Here are five recruits Texas should fill their 2022 class out with.

WATCH: Texas target, five-star WR Evan Stewart blows by double coverage for touchdown

Five-star Evan Stewart may be at the very top of Texas’ need within the 2022 class. Watch him score a 58-yard TD in the season opener here.

Make up a list of Texas’ biggest needs in the 2022 class and Evan Stewart may be at the very top. The five-star receiver is one of the best in the country and is getting recognized for it. The 247Sports composite recently moved Stewart up to the No. 3 overall prospect.

It’s easy to forget Stewart was once a Texas commit. Steve Sarkisian had the speedster locked down for just under a month before he decided to open up his recruitment. Wanting to take advantage of the NCAA dead period seemed to be the biggest reason.

Texas has stayed in the race, though. Alongside the Longhorns are some of the biggest SEC programs in the country chasing Stewart. Florida has made an impression early on, with Alabama and LSU lurking in the background. Texas A&M received an unofficial visit as well.

Defensive backs are chasing after Stewart as well. In Frisco Liberty’s season opener on Thursday, he quite literally ran past two defenders for a 58-yard touchdown. The cornerback never had a chance from the time the ball was snapped, followed by a safety late to the party.

You can watch the touchdown, followed by a questionable dead ball penalty, here.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Stewart ended the day with four receptions for 101 yards. Liberty beat Frisco Reedy 50-49, scoring a touchdown and converting a two-point conversion with under 10 seconds remaining.

For Texas to stay in the race for Stewart, a few things must be shown early on in Sarkisian’s debut season.

Winning games is first. This could be said for just about every top-rated recruit in the state. Before committing to Texas, they want to see the product on the field be better. From the season opener against Louisiana to the Oklahoma State game on Oct. 16, finding a way to be at least 5-1 is important. Success on the recruiting trail, especially in the case of Stewart, will follow if so.

The second is how Sarkisian’s use of receivers translates in Austin. The hype around the past two seasons at Alabama’s first-round draft picks will die pretty quickly if players such as Joshua Moore, Jordan Whittington, and Xavier Worthy are not putting up explosive numbers. Stewart’s will not be drawn to poor receiver performances.

Where Texas lands in ESPN’s updated 2022 recruiting class rankings

ESPN recently released their updated 2022 recruiting class rankings.

After getting off to an extremely strong start in the recruiting world, it seems as if Steve Sarkisian and his staff have hit a wall when it comes to landing big-time commitments.

The most probable reason is that players and their families want to see the Longhorns in action this fall in order to see if they’re able to produce and develop under the new coaching staff. Texas is in a situation where Austin is always seen as an attractive destination, but recruits need to see some tangible results and success.

ESPN recently released their 2022 recruiting class rankings (subscription required), and Texas’ class landed at No. 11 in the nation. Sarkisian’s group is currently ahead of Clemson, Missouri, Virginia Tech, and North Carolina.

The 2022 cycle for Texas is headlined by a couple of four-star prospects in safety Bryan Allen Jr. and running back Jaydon Blue. Here is what ESPN had to say about the class the Longhorns have assembled up to this point:

After guiding one of the most high-powered attacks in college football as offensive coordinator at Alabama, Steve Sarkisian is now assembling his first full class as head coach at Texas. Offense defines this group early on. The Longhorns went to California for their quarterback, Maalik Murphy, a prospect with limited high school game experience thus far but someone who possesses some impressive physical traits, including a big arm. The class also features some big-play offensive targets from in-state: top-20 wide receiver Armani Winfield and two top-10 RBs in Jamarion Miller and Blue, who can be an explosive runner with good ball skills. Defense is not being overlooked either, as the Longhorns added one of the top defensive back prospects in the state in Allen, a top-five safety who is fluid with good instincts.

The Longhorns are likely pleased with the players they have currently committed, but are still in the mix for some high profile targets in ESPN’s rankings, such as five-star wide receiver Evan Stewart, four-star cornerback Denver Harris, five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell, and four-star offensive lineman Kam Dewberry.

It’s crucial for Texas to land a few of those names.

After the previous coaching staff issues and underwhelming results on the field for the last decade, it’s understandable that recruits will want results from the program before they can fully commit to suit up in the burnt orange.

This five-star receiver says Florida is starting to feel like home after FNL visit

Five-star wide receiver Evan Stewart said Florida is starting to feel like home after his third visit to Florida in two months.

Florida and coach Dan Mullen are attempting to land a five-star recruit in back-to-back-to-back classes. Mullen landed defensive tackle Gervon Dexter in 2020 and cornerback Jason Marshall in 2021. The Gators are in a good spot for two five-star prospects this cycle — defensive lineman Walter Nolen and wide receiver Evan Stewart. Nolen visited Texas A&M this weekend while Stewart recorded another successful visit to the Swamp.

“It was good,” Stewart said on Friday, according to Swamp247. “It feels good to be back. It’s getting a little bit feeling like home, so I’m enjoying myself right now.”

One of the most significant factors in the Gators’ favor is the idea of Stewart teaming up with his 7-on-7 teammate and Florida quarterback commit Nick Evers. He traveled with the Evers family to Gainesville.

Evers and Stewart returned to campus Saturday for the Great Gator Grill Out before heading back to Texas.

Stewart said that all the schools competing for his pledge are neck and neck. He mentioned that his top schools are Florida, LSU and Alabama with his home state school Texas falling out of the picture. He believes the environment on game day when he visits each school will determine where he ends up. Stewart plans to visit the Gators again when they play Alabama.

Five Texas targets, commits that could benefit by enrolling early

With the report that Quinn Ewers is looking to forgo his senior season, here are five Texas prospects that could benefit from a similar move.

College football may be right in the thick of the craziest month in the history of the sport.

With players now being able to profit off their NIL, the rapid news of a major conference realignment, and now current Ohio State commit Quinn Ewers potentially enrolling early to benefit off of NIL has sent shockwaves through the college football landscape.

Ewers is not the first person to do this as people reclassify all the time, for example, J.T. Daniels skipped his senior year at Mater Dei to enroll early at USC.

However, the reason for Daniels and Ewers wanting to enroll early is quite different. Daniels as a person is a lot different than most, especially his maturity level. The Athletic stated how Daniels was extremely mature for his age as result of reading sports psychology and human biology books that had very dense topics for a high schooler. It was a good indication that Daniels was ready for new challenges mentally and athletically.

On the flip side, Ewers very well could be just as ready from a maturity  standpoint, but there are reports that NIL is a very major factor into his decision to forgo his senior season at Southlake Carrol.

Yahoo Sports stated that Ewers’ situation was delved into, and there is reportedly a kings ransom available for the bleach blonde mullet sporting quarterback if he leaves high school. In the state of Texas, high school athletes are not allowed to profit off their NIL. The article explained just how much money is within Ewers’ reach if he enrolls in college:

Ewers has emerged as such a precocious and recognizable star that he has the potential to earn nearly a million dollars in the next year by profiting off his Name Image and Likeness. A local company called Holy Kombucha is among those offering a deal to Ewers, and it includes cash and equity in the company. There are several other offers, including national brands.

His parents are worried about him missing out on his senior year, and the repercussions this type of decision could have. Although numerous players have reclassified before, none of them had the following or the legitimate potential to be a millionaire before even practicing with his college team. The article did include Ewers’ current mindset, which is:

“I don’t really know, I don’t have a final decision made quite yet,” Ewers said in a phone interview on Wednesday. “I’m leaning toward leaving and going up to Ohio, just so I don’t have to deal with UIL stuff and can get comfortable with Ohio and Columbus and start to learn.”

Whether Ewers decides to skip high school or not, it sparks the topic of which Texas recruits could benefit by enrolling early, both to make an immediate impact for the team as well as cash in on NIL.

Here are five Texas targets and commits who I feel could benefit by reclassifying from their respective class.

This 5-star wide receiver will visit Florida again for Friday Night Lights

Florida has pushed all the right buttons for five-star Evan Stewart so far. On Thursday, he confirmed his plans to visit UF again for FNL.

Coach Dan Mullen and wide receiver coach Billy Gonzales received great news Thursday. Five-star Texas wide receiver Evan Stewart confirmed his plans to visit Florida for its Friday Night Lights events on July 30, according to Swamp247.

It’s a nice win for the Gators because they got him back to the Sunshine State for a visit in back-to-back months. Florida also made a strong impression when Stewart officially visited its program back during the first weekend of June.

[exco_embed id=”e5869bc6-faf6-4b7a-8c06-b5610c96a8fe”]

“It’s just a championship-winning program,” Stewart said, according to Swamp247. “They all have that championship mentality and they all push themselves to be as good as they can be and they all make sure they’re great and if they see someone not being great, they pick them up and build them up.”

He plans to make the trek to Gainesville with his father where Stewart will be able to spend more time around his 7-on-7 teammate and Florida quarterback commit Nick Evers. Evers has been recruiting Stewart to join him in the Swamp since his commitment.

However, the talented wideout has used an official visit to Texas while unofficially visiting Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M. Florida will need to make a splash with Stewart on July 30 and secure a visit to one of its top home games this season to stay in the hunt for his pledge.

LSU Tigers still in the mix for five-star wide receiver Evan Stewart

Appears as though the LSU Tigers are still in the mix for 2022 five-star WR Evan Stewart of Frisco, Texas.

Looking at the 2022 recruiting class for the LSU Tigers, Ed Orgeron already has four-star Aaron Anderson (New Orleans, LA), A.J. Johnson (New Orleans, LA), and Decoldest Crawford (Shreveport, LA) committed to the class. However, there is still a rather large name still waiting to make his final decision.

Evan Stewart of Liberty (Frisco, TX), has yet to make his final decision with five schools still in the mix. He originally committed to the Texas Longhorns before backing off that pledge, UT is still very much in the race to land one of the top receivers in the country.

Stewart originally visited Baton Rouge prior to the NCAA’s dead period began in early April of 2020. He could still return for another visit to Death Valley as he looks to lock in his final visits. Stewart has visited Texas, Florida, and Alabama. It seems like LSU would be the next in line to host the five-star wide receiver.

Stewart recently spoke about his five teams in the mix with 247Sports.

“LSU is kind of like the same thing.
They’re real business. Really it’s the same thing. There’s not really much different between Alabama and LSU, you know what I mean?”

Stewart obviously values the work ethic and how much the Tigers put into their program. What will it take for LSU to lock up one of the most sought-after receivers in the country?

“Really it’s getting my dad on board,” Stewart said. “My dad is a very hard-going man, and he really wants me to get my degree and he really wants those academics. Same with my mom. You’ve gotta get my mom on board, too. So if both my parents aren’t on board, then I know that’s not gonna be the decision I make.”

Five critical targets remaining in the 2022 recruiting class for Texas

After a frenzied week of recruiting, there seems to be a reset. Here are the five most important prospects remaining in Texas’ 2022 class:

The end of June and the beginning of July has been up and down for Texas’ recruiting. Running back and the offensive line has been the two main focuses, with three commitments and three or four misses.

DeAnthony Gatson was thought to be a Longhorn but opted to follow the recent Texas to USC trend. East Texas’ own Jamarion Miller ended up being the second running back in the class as a result. A fair trade for both sides.

On the offensive line, Kyle Flood ended up going two for five to begin the month of July. Cole Hutson and Connor Robertson committed to Texas, while Kelvin Banks and Cameron Williams opted for Oregon. Jacob Sexton decided to stay home at play for Oklahoma.

After a frenzy of a week, there seems to be a reset. Steve Sarkisian and his staff need to figure out how to close on their top remaining prospects left on the board. There are plenty remaining, all from within the state of as well.
