Browns waive OL Evan Brown during the bye week

Brown played in five games in Cleveland, all on special teams

In need of an open roster spot to add linebacker Elijah Lee to the active roster, the Cleveland Browns waived rookie offensive lineman Evan Brown on Thursday.

Brown was one of the unheralded street free agents signed by the Browns just before the draft. A center and guard out of SMU, Brown spent his 2019 rookie campaign with both the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins. He played only on special teams in five games for the Browns this year.

Lee finally cleared the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols after being claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions. The linebacker played under Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods in San Francisco. He had been on the commissioner’s exempt list while awaiting his passing of COVID-19 testing.

Brown will be eligible for waiver claims on Friday.

Evan Brown: What the Browns are getting in their new center

Evan Brown: What the Cleveland Browns are getting in their new center signed in free agency on Thursday

It appears the Cleveland Browns are done making splash signings, but they are not done adding depth pieces as they have signed Evan Brown to provide depth at the center position. Brown is not a player you want starting, but the additional depth is always nice.

Name: Evan Brown

Height: 6-2

Weight: 302 pounds

Age: 23 years old

Previous Team: Miami Dolphins

Brown went undrafted in 2018 out of SMU and was immediately plucked up by the New York Giants. He actually made the final roster for his rookie season, but bounced from the active roster to the practice squad during the 2019 season. Miami actually picked Brown up off of the New York practice squad midway through the season and again he bounced to their practice squad shortly after. Brown was released by the Dolphins after the season.

Despite going undrafted in 2018, Brown actually made a few waves during the pre-draft process as he displayed his elite upper body strength with 36 reps on the bench press and showed off his explosion with a 36″ vertical jump during his pro-day. These attributes are no joke either as Brown does have the strength and explosion to play in this league.

The problem with Brown is his lack of ideal size and sloppy footwork, which make him a liability against upper-echelon defensive linemen. At only 23 years old, Brown is not yet a finished product, but it is a safe assumption that he has reached his ceiling as his frame is maxed out and he is not a great athlete.

The Browns are not done adding pieces to this offensive line and the addition of Brown should not bring a sigh of relief to anyone. He is young with some intriguing traits, but Brown is not guaranteed to make this final roster. It is likely Cleveland will add a rookie who will push Brown.

Browns sign free agent center Evan Brown

Browns sign free agent center Evan Brown to compete for a reserve role on the offensive line

The Cleveland Browns have added another interior offensive lineman to the offseason mix. On Thursday morning the team announced it has signed free agent Evan Brown to a contract.

Brown comes to the Browns after finishing the 2019 campaign with the Miami Dolphins. He played sparingly in four games. He spent most of his first two NFL seasons with the New York Giants after making the roster as an undrafted rookie out of SMU following the 2018 NFL Draft.

Terms are not yet available for the contract.

Brown projects as a potential reserve behind JC Tretter at center and Joel Bitonio at left guard.

Giants will see a number of familiar faces vs. Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins have a roster stocked with several former members of the New York Giants.

When the New York Giants take on the Miami Dolphins this Sunday at MetLife Stadium, they will be staring across the field at a number of familiar faces and former friends.

The Dolphins recently signed offensive lineman Evan Brown off of the Giants’ practice squad. Brown had signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and remained with the team until poached by Miami last week.

Brown is only the tip of the ex-Giants iceberg, however.

In addition to Brown, who backs up Michael Deiter at left guard, the Dolphins play a pair of former Giants at defensive end — John Jenkins and Avery Moss.

Jenkins, the starter, was signed by the Giants in September of 2018 and spent that season with the team. He was re-signed in 2019, but waived as a part of final cuts.

Moss, Jenkins’ primary backup, was a fifth-round pick of the Giants in 2017. Like Jenkins, he remained with the team through final cuts in September when he was cut loose after failing live up to expectations.

As Billy Mays would say, “but wait, there’s more!”

The Dolphins don’t just have ex-Giants on offense and defense, but on special teams as well.

When specials are out on the field, the Giants will be seeing a lot from long-snapper Taybor Pepper, who was signed to a reserve/futures contract by New York in January before being waived as a part of final cuts in September.

Finally, Swiss Army Knife Jake Carlock, who is loved by Giants fans and should still be in East Rutherford, resides on Miami’s practice squad.

“Jake’s doing great. He’s really a hard-working kid, plays multiple positions. I think he’s doing a really good job. We were excited to get him, excited to have him and I think he’s got a future,” Dolphins head coach Brian Flores said during a Wednesday conference call. “I think he’s got the talent and the toughness and grit to work on any and everything to make himself the best player he can be. I think he’s done a really good job, and he’s got a lot of room for development.”

Giants add DB Rashaan Gaulden to practice squad

The New York Giants have signed DB Rashaan Gaulden to their practice squad and lost OL Evan Brown to the Miami Dolphins.

The New York Giants added defensive back Rashaan Gaulden to their practice squad on Wednesday. Gaulden fills the void left by the promotion of long snapper Colin Holba to the active roster last week. Holba served as the team’s long snapper in their 31-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Gaulden (6-foot-1, 200 pounds), as per the Giants:

“Played in 24 games in two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, including nine games this season. He was released on Nov. 25….Gaulden was credited with 14 tackles (10 solo) and returned one punt for the Panthers. He was a 2018 third-round draft choice (85th overall) by Carolina, from the University of Tennessee.”

Another Panther joins the fold here with the Giants. Many fans are interested if the Giants will be seeking the services of Ron Rivera this offseason. Rivera was fired by the Panthers this week after almost nine seasons as head coach.

Gaulden is the third defensive back on the practice squad, joining cornerback Derrick Baity and safety Sean Chandler.

Meanwhile, the Miami Dolphins signed offensive lineman Evan Brown off of the Giants’ practice squad to their 53-man roster.

Giants re-sign Evan Brown to practice squad

The New York Giants have re-signed offensive lineman Evan Brown to their practice squad.

The New York Giants made a flurry of roster moves earlier this week, signing tight end Scott Simonson to the 53-man roster and adding three to their practice squad after the Carolina Panthers signed cornerback Corn Elder to their active roster.

The three other additions came by way of tight end Garrett Dickerson, wide receiver Alex Bachman and long-snapper Colin Holba.

As a part of those moves, offensive lineman Evan Brown was waived off of the 53-man roster just a few days after having been promoted from the practice squad. But after clearing waivers, Brown is now back.

The Giants announced late on Tuesday night that Brown was re-signed to the team’s practice squad.

The 6-foot-2, 302-pound Brown signed with the Giants as a rookie free agent out of SMU following the 2018 NFL Draft and went on to make their 53-man roster, where he resided for all 16 games last season despite not playing in a game.

This season, Brown was waived as a part of final cuts, but was promptly re-signed to the team’s practice squad, where he had remained until last Saturday when the roller coaster began.

If a corresponding roster move was needed to make room for Brown on the practice squad, the Giants have yet to announce it.

Giants waive Evan Brown, Corn Elder signed by Panthers

The New York Giants have waived OL Evan Brown and had CB Corn Elder signed off of their practice squad by the Carolina Panthers.

Less than a week after promoting him to their active roster, the New York Giants waived offensive lineman Evan Brown on Monday evening.

The 23-year-old Brown had been added to the team’s 53-man roster with center Jon Halapio (hamstring) and right tackle Mike Remmers (back) ailing. He logged just a single offensive snap (on a busted PAT) and two special teams snaps in a Week 10 loss to the New York Jets.

It’s likely the Giants sign Brown back to their practice squad if he clears waivers. And somewhat ironically, they now have an open space for him.

In addition to waiving Brown, the Giants announced on Monday that the Carolina Panthers had signed cornerback Corn Eldger to their 53-man roster from Big Blue’s practice squad.

The Giants had added Elder to their practice squad shortly after he was released by the Panthers as a part of final cuts in late August/early September.

The 25-year-old Elder was a fifth-round pick of the Panthers in the 2017 NFL Draft.
