Nick Saban looking for more depth and consistency along the offensive line

Building more depth and consistency is Nick Saban’s goal for the Alabama offensive line

There is no question that one of the more inconsistent position groups for Alabama over the past couple of seasons has been the offensive line. In 2021, the Crimson Tide allowed 42 sacks over the course of the season which led to the hiring of Eric Wolford from Kentucky. Coach Wolf quickly put his stamp on the group which saw a ton of improvement in 2022 and nearly cut the sack total in half by allowing 22 sacks. Still, improvements are needed for the bug guys up front.

Following Saturday’s first scrimmage of fall camp, Nick Saban was asked about the progress of the offensive line and the head coach of the Crimson Tide was very blunt in his assessment.

“Inconsistent, not enough depth. We had a couple explosive runs but you know, when you’re playing against each other, was the explosive run because of great execution or was it because of terrible execution on the other side? Until you watch the film it’s kind of hard to evaluate. I just think we need to get more guys in the offensive line to be able to play winning football and we need to add depth to the group. We have maybe, six, seven guys that I think are in play but we need a lot more than that to get through the season.”

Why OL play more critical to success for Alabama than QB in 2023

Alabama’s quarterback competition is dominating the headlines but offensive line play might be more critical to the Tide’s success in 2023.

Everybody loves to talk about quarterbacks. Truth be told, the quarterbacks are either given too much credit for a team’s success, or too much blame for the inadequacies of a team. So it should come as no surprise that the only topic anybody wants to discuss this offseason relative to Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide is the quarterback battle in Tuscaloosa.

Whoever eventually wins the starting job for the Tide will play an important role in the team’s success or failures in 2023, but I am not so sure it’s the most critical position on the offense this fall. If Alabama doesn’t get its offensive line right this season, who the quarterback is becomes a moot point.

This spring, junior offensive tackle JC Latham made it clear what he and his fellow offensive linemen wanted the group to be known for in 2023. “I want us to be ruthless. I want guys to every time we line up and get ready to hike the ball, I want them to be scared of us. I want them to understand that we’re going to hit them in the mouth every single play, ready to go four quarters.”

Sophomore Tyler Booker backed up Latham’s comments with some strong words of his own. “We want that mentality of ‘Man we have to play Alabama this week. How are we going to stop that run?’ “That’s the mentality that we want to have and honestly do this through the spring. That’s how Alabama played when I was growing up. This is what I see Alabama football as. To be able to bring that back to what it was, it means the most. That mentality is throughout the room like everybody’s trying to finish blocks, push the pile, and things of that nature. That’s the mindset of the room.”

It’s clear that Alabama, under the direction of second-year offensive line coach Eric Wolford, wants to rewind the clock up front and return to a more physical style of play along the offensive line. But talking about it only gets you so far. Being able to execute it between the white lines on Saturdays in the fall is all that matters.

So, am I out of line for believing that the OL play in 2023 is more critical than QB? Let’s take a deeper look.

In 2021 and 2022, Alabama had one of the most elite quarterbacks in Crimson Tide history but was unable to capture the most prized possession. There were a lot of variables that led to the Tide being unable to win a national championship and one of those, and maybe one of the more critical ones was the fact that Alabama was not elite along the offensive line.

Over the past couple of seasons, it has been a struggle for the Tide to convert on third and short situations or near the goal line because the offensive line just wasn’t physical enough to get the push needed to convert. Looking at what Latham and Booker each had to say, Alabama has made a concentrated effort to change that narrative this offseason.

With Tommy Rees, an old-style play caller, taking over as offensive coordinator and with the backs that Alabama has this fall, the running game will be what drives the success of the Alabama football program in 2023.

Sure, the quarterback will need to make plays and take care of the football. But make no mistake, the starting five up front will play a much more important role in Alabama’s success. If they are truly physical and relentless like Latham and Booker desire, then watch out. If not, it could be a long season for the Tide.

Tyler Booker ready to bring back old-school Alabama OL play

Tyler Booker is ready to make opponents dread facing the Alabama rushing attack!

The Alabama Crimson Tide offensive line under [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] originally built a reputation as dominating and physical group. Over the past few seasons, the intimidating presence has taken a bit of a hit. According to true sophomore guard Tyler Booker, the goal this season is to bring that old-school brand back to Tuscaloosa.

On Tuesday, Booker had a chance to speak to the media and expressed his desire to help restore some physicality upfront.

Booker is entering his second season as a starter along the Alabama offensive line and after an impressive freshmen season, Booker is in store for a monster season in 2023.

Here are some of Booker’s comments from Tuesday’s press conference!

Alabama RB Roydell Williams offers high praise for the Tide OL

Alabama’s offensive linemen are “dawgs” according to Crimson Tide running back Roydell Williams!

Believe it or not, [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] and the Alabama football team are more than halfway through the 2023 spring football activities and we are now less than two weeks away from the conclusion on April 22 when the annual A-Day game takes place.

On Monday, before the Crimson Tide took to the practice field, senior running back Roydell Williams would be given the opportunity to speak to the media and answer questions.

When asked about the offensive line, Williams was very complimentary of the big boys up front. “Those guys are dawgs, man, every last one of them,” Williams said of his blockers. “From the top to the bottom, oldest to the youngest, man, they’re doing great out there.”

The offensive line has been an area of concern over the past couple of seasons, but everything indicates that coach Eric Wolford and his players are making tremendous strides in creating a more physical group upfront for the Tide.

Alabama lands fifth OL commit from 2023 class in California native Raymond Pulido

Pulido chose the Crimson Tide over other programs like UCLA, Oregon, and Louisville.

Alabama’s coaching staff has been pushing to add some of the nation’s best talent over the last few months. One of the nation’s premier offensive tackles is California native Raymond Pulido. On Saturday, Pulido announced that he is committing to Alabama via his Twitter account.

Pulido is an intriguing prospect because he isn’t ranked as high as the other four offensive linemen committed to the Crimson Tide: RyQueze McElderry, Wilkin Formby, Olaus Alinen and Miles McVay. However, the size is certainly there. He stands at 6-foot-6, 345 pounds according to 247Sports.

As it stands, Alabama has five offensive linemen committed for the 2023 recruiting class.

Pulido may be overlooked by recruiting services, but Alabama fans should be excited to see Pulido as well as the other commitments already on board for the 2023 recruiting class. It could be one of the more talented recruiting classes that Coach Saban has ever signed. We will have to wait and see.

Roll Tide Wire takes a look at Pulido’s recruiting profile.

Alabama making late push for 2023 OT Monroe Freeling

Alabama is set to host several visitors this weekend. One of those visitors will be 2023 offensive tackle Monroe Freeling.

Alabama’s coaching staff has made it clear that their goal is to sign five or six offensive linemen in the 2023 recruiting class. Thus far, they have commitments from Wilkin Formby, RyQueze McElderry and Olaus Alinen. One uncommitted lineman is offensive tackle, Monroe Freeling. He is the highest-rated recruit from South Carolina.

In May, Freeling released his top-seven schools. Alabama was not one of the schools listed. Nonetheless, there is still interest amongst both parties. This weekend, Freeling will be on campus for an unofficial visit. It will be his first trip to Tuscaloosa since receiving an offer from the Crimson Tide.

As of right now, Clemson holds a commanding lead in his recruitment, according to On3’s RPM. The Tigers are the favorite to land Freeling at 45.9% likelihood. If the Alabama coaching staff can make a good impression, Freeling may reevaluate his top seven. If that were the case, he would likely add Alabama as a finalist.

2024 TE Martavious Collins releases top schools, Alabama in good position

Alabama lands in top eleven for 2024 TE/ATH Martavious Collins. He is set to commit on July 20.

Alabama seems to be all in on recruiting Martavious Collins, one of the top tight ends of the 2024 class. The native of Rome, Georgia received an offer from the Tide a little over two months ago.

Upon receiving the offer, Collins tweeted, “Blessed to receive an offer from my dream school the University of Alabama.” That could be a good sign of things to come as Collins released his top-11 recently. He is set to announce his commitment on July 20.

The primary recruiters for Collins have been tight ends coach Joe Cox and offensive line coach Eric Wolford. As of right now, On3’s RPM is heavily in favor of Alabama at a 91.4% likelihood. Alabama fans should keep a close eye on his recruitment.

Alabama to hire Kentucky OL coach Eric Wolford

Alabama will be hiring Kentucky’s OL coach from the 2021 season.

Alabama hired former Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Don Marrone in 2021 to serve as the Crimson Tide offensive line coach, but it now appears that the program will be moving in a different direction for the 2022 season.

Reported by BamaOnline’s Charlie Potter, Alabama is hiring Kentucky’s offensive line coach Eric Wolford.

Wolford coached on season at Kentucky, but has been an offensive line coach  since 1995, where he played while in college.

This will be stop No. 13 for Wolford, he has coached at two other SEC programs (Kentucky, South Carolina) and he had a brief stint in the NFL as the assistant offensive line coach for the San Francisco 49ers.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to share updates regarding Wolford’s hire as more information becomes available.
