Thomas Almeida, Emily Whitmire among 5 fighters no longer on UFC roster

The UFC has parted ways with five fighters, including Thomas Almeida and Emily Whitmire.

Five fighters are no longer on the UFC roster, including a former bantamweight contender.

Multiple people with knowledge of the releases recently informed MMA Junkie of the roster moves but asked to remain anonymous since the promotion hasn’t made an official announcement. The roster changes came to light after the fighters were moved to the “former fighters” section of the UFC’s website (h/t UFC Roster Watch).

Check out the recent UFC departures below. The roster moves, unless explicitly noted, are not necessarily a “cut.” The UFC may have elected not to re-sign certain fighters who were at the end of their contracts.

UFC Fight Night 192 post-event facts: Anthony Smith becoming an all-time great finisher

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC Fight Night 192, which saw Anthony Smith extend his winning streak with a main event finish.

UFC Fight Night 192 featured a rare first-round submission finish in the main event as [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] put away [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag].

Saturday’s event, which took place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, featured a key light heavyweight matchup in the headliner. Smith (35-16 MMA, 11-6 UFC) shined once again to close a fight card, as he managed to hurt Spann (19-7 MMA, 5-2 UFC) on the feet before closing the show with a rear-naked choke.

“Lionheart” almost never sees the judges, and that track record is starting to show itself on his overall UFC resume.

Cory McKenna vs. Emily Whitmire added to UFC Fight Night on Sept. 18

A strawweight bout between Cory McKenna and Emily Whitmire is the latest addition to UFC Fight Night on Sept. 18.

A strawweight bout between [autotag]Cory McKenna[/autotag] and [autotag]Emily Whitmire[/autotag] is the latest addition to UFC Fight Night on Sept. 18.

McKenna (6-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) takes on Whitmire (4-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at a location and venue to be announced.

Two people with knowledge of the matchup recently informed MMA Junkie of the booking but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

McKenna, who inked a UFC deal on Dana White’s Contender Series, edged out Kay Hansen in her promotional debut in November 2020. The 21-year-old Team Alpha Male fighter suffered a torn ligament and broken right ankle in the win, which has forced her on the sidelines ever since.

Whitmire will also return after a significant time away from the octagon where she’ll look to snap a two-fight losing skid. After scoring two straight wins over Jamie Moyle and Aleksandra Albu, the Season 26 “The Ultimate Fighter” alum dropped back-to-back submission losses to Amanda Ribas and most recently Polyana Viana in August 2020. She was scheduled to face Sam Hughes at UFC Fight Night 186 in February but withdrew due to undisclosed reasons.

With the addition, the Sept. 18 lineup includes:

  • Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann
  • Tafon Nchukwi vs. Mike Rodriguez
  • Devin Clark vs. Ion Cutelaba
  • Jim Miller vs. Nikolas Motta
  • Dakota Bush vs. Zhu Rong
  • Danaa Batgerel vs. Montel Jackson
  • Sarah Alpar vs. Erin Blanchfield
  • Carlston Harris vs. Impa Kasanganay
  • Pannie Kianzad vs. Raquel Pennington
  • Heili Alateng vs. Gustavo Lopez
  • Antonio Arroyo vs. Joaquin Buckley
  • Cory McKenna vs. Emily Whitmire

Hannah Cifers out of UFC Fight Night matchup vs. Emily Whitmire; Sam Hughes steps in

Emily Whitmire is in need of a new opponent.

[autotag]Hannah Cifers[/autotag] has withdrawn from her Feb. 27 fight.

Against Whitmire, Hughes (5-2 MMA, 0-1 UFC) will look to rebound from a doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Tecia Torres this past December at UFC 256. That was Hughes’ promotional debut.

Video: Polyana Viana snaps three-fight skid with slick submission at UFC on ESPN+ 33

Polyana Viana potentially saved her spot on the UFC roster with a much-needed win over Emily Whitmire at UFC on ESPN+ 33.

[autotag]Polyana Viana[/autotag] potentially saved her spot on the UFC roster Saturday with a much-needed win over [autotag]Emily Whitmire[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN+ 33.

Viana (11-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC) carried a three-fight losing skid into her matchup with Whitmire (4-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC) at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Her back was against the wall, but then she rose to the occasion in thrilling fashion.

The Brazilian found an opportunity to lock up an armbar on Whitmire from bottom position early in the fight and finished the job in less than two minutes.

Check out the reply of her handiwork below (via Twitter):

With the performance, Viana has still yet to see the scorecards in victory. She’s put her opponent away inside the distance every time she’s gotten her hand raised, and Whitmire offered her that opportunity with her early aggression.

Viana returned to the win column for the first time since her UFC debut in February 2018, and now the 28-year-old can move forward with some pressure off her shoulders.
