Steelers get their No. 2 receiver in new mock draft

Wide receiver could be the Steelers top draft need in 2025

It might only be early November but unless the Pittsburgh Steelers pull off some sort of huge trade before the NFL trade deadline, wide receiver is going to be one of the team’s top offseason needs.   This means the Steelers could target a wide receiver in free agency or near the top of the 2025 NFL draft.

This is the direction draft writer Cory Kinnan took in his newest mock draft.  He has the Steelers picking No. 25 overall and selecting Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. Here’s what he had to say about the pick:

The Pittsburgh Steelers need a glue guy offensively. George Pickens is lethal down the field and has superb hands and ball skills, but they do not have someone who will dominate at the short and intermediate levels of the field to give whoever their quarterback will be in 2025 a valve under pressure.

Ohio State’s Emeka Egbuka, while he lacks a dominant physical trait, is that guy. He’s refined, and smooth, knows how to hunt out green grass and present his number, and will make life easier on his quarterback.

He’ll block his ass off too, winning over the heart of head coach Mike Tomlin in record time.

Egbuka is a pick that may not turn out to be a consistent 1,100-yard receiver, but you’re not going to miss on him.

Egbuka is the definition of a safe pick. He’s been largely overshadowed by super freshman Jeremiah Smith but still leads the team in receptions. He’s definitely the No. 5 receiver behind Travis Hunter, Tetairoa McMillan, Luther Burden III and Isaiah Bond in this upcoming draft but would still represent decent value to the Steelers in the first round.

Baltimore Ravens among NFL teams in attendance for Penn State vs. Ohio State matchup

No. 3 ranked Penn State (7-0) is hosting the No. 4 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (6-1) on Saturday at Beaver Stadium, and the NFL scouts and executives are out and taking in the star power on both squads.

The Nittany Lions’ top draft prospects include defensive end Abdul Carter — a potential top-10 pick — as well as quarterback Drew Allar, running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kayton Allen, tight end Tyler Warren, defensive tackle Zane Durant, defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton and safety Jaylen Reed.

For Ohio State, Will Howard (QB), TreVeyon Henderson (RB), Quinshon Judkins (RB), Emeka Egbuka (WR), and Donovan Jackson (OL) are among the players to watch.

Watch Will Howard connect with Emeka Egbuka to get Ohio State on the scoreboard

Nice connection for the score #GoBucks

After a horrific start, Ohio State quarterback Will Howard made up for his pick-six by connecting with Emeka Egbuka on a wheel route for the score against Penn State. Chip Kelly used some creativity to get the Buckeyes into scoring position by running a speed option and getting other chunk plays. So far, it seems like the revamped offensive line is doing a fine job opening lanes and giving Howard time to work.

Ohio State started out the game by digging itself into a 10-0 hole. But credit to the team and coaching staff for not panicking and coming back with the methodical drive to bring the Bucks within three points of the Nittany Lions. Check out the sweet pass play below that got OSU on the board.

Ohio State football’s Emeka Egbuka rated Big Ten’s best receiver

Pro Football Focus has released its rankings, and Emeka Egbuka sits atop the Big Ten’s receivers.

The Ohio State Buckeyes are widely known as a wide receiver powerhouse.

Having brought in talents like Marvin Harrison Jr., Garrett Wilson and Michael Thomas, all of which have made their name known at the highest level in football, the Buckeyes consistently have some of the best of the best at the position, and 2024 is no different.

Emeka Egbuka is one of them, and he might set the Ohio State all-time receiving yards record this season as well.

Egbuka was ranked the highest-graded Big Ten wide receiver per Pro Football Focus, a well-respected company that found its footprint grading NFL players and teams.

Egbuka is coming off a 20-yard performance against Nebraska, but he has gone for 93, 71, 96 and 117 in the four games prior to that. Egbuka has 546 receiving yards and 43 receptions on the season to along with six touchdowns.

As the Buckeyes schedule starts to head up, expect Egbuka to rise to the occasion and become a key weapon for Will Howard and this elite Ohio State attack.

Previewing Ohio State’s offense ahead of Saturday’s game vs. Oregon Ducks

Ohio State is going to bring in one of the best offenses in the country and will provide a huge test for the Ducks.

Oregon and Ohio State were in the same position this position. Both teams were looking for a quarterback to lead an offense full of dangerous weapons, including a group of receivers that is one of the best in the country.

Both teams landed a Big XII quarterback with the Ducks getting former Oklahoma Sooner Dillon Gabriel and the Buckeyes signing former Kansas State signal caller Will Howard.

The two quarterbacks have been very good for their respective teams. Howard has been very efficient for the Buckeyes as he has a 69 completion percentage to go with his eight touchdowns and just two interceptions for the season.

Predictably, Howard’s favorite targets, as they should be, are receivers Emeka Egbuka and true freshman Jeremiah Smith. Egbuka is one of the best receivers out there and should be a first-round NFL draft pick and Smith isn’t disappointing as a former No. 1 recruit.

Egbuka has 21 catches for 362 yards (90.5 ypg) to go with two touchdowns. Smith has shown he’s ready for the big time as he leads Ohio State with five touchdowns with his 19 receptions and 364 yards.

“They can catch the ball and they can turn into a big play right away. It’s not necessarily always their average depth of target is way down the field,” Oregon coach Dan Lanning said.. “It’s their ability to catch it in space and get vertical. They block really, really well on the perimeter. And those guys have big catch radius. So you see them win on balls that you can you call 50-50 balls. A lot of times they win on contested balls, they do a really good job there.”

What makes Ohio State’s offense so good is that opposing defenses can’t just concentrate on the passing game. Running backs Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson is a powerful 1-2 punch out of the backfield.

Judkins is averaging 97.5 yards a game and has scored five touchdowns, while Henderson is averaging nearly nine yards a carry and has scored four times.

Lanning says offensive coordinator Chip Kelly doesn’t get enough credit for the Buckeyes’ rushing game.

“I think he’s always done a great job of utilizing his personnel. Moving guys around and allowing them to do things that they do really, really well. He always finds unique ways to run the ball,” he said. “I think that’s one thing that he probably doesn’t get enough credit for is his ability to run the ball regardless of the situation. You know, he’s at UCLA last year, the number one rushing team in our conference for many reasons, and it’s because of his ability to run the ball.”

Ohio State has a big offensive line typical of most Big Ten teams. Each of them weigh over 300 pounds, led by senior guard Donovan Jackson. He was a First-Team All-Conference lineman in 2022.

Steelers scouts swarm Week 6, Ohio State vs Iowa: Finding future stars

The Steelers are preparing for the future! Pittsburgh sent out scouts to witness some of College Football’s best from Ohio State and Iowa.

From Omar Khan aggressively pursuing a trade for Davante Adams to preparation for next year’s draft, there is a lot to love about this team’s future. Pittsburgh’s scouting team is looking to keep the ‘Khan Artist’ happy with the CFB matchups this week.

It was reported on Saturday morning that Pittsburgh was one of ten teams to send personnel to scout the Ohio State vs Iowa matchup. Pittsburgh made a decision, one that only a select few of these ten teams made, to send more than one scout to the game.

Several dominant and key players from next year’s draft will be showcasing their talent in hopes of becoming top draft selections, such as Ohio State’s WR Emeka Egbuka, EDGE Jack Sawyer, RB Quinshon Judkins, OT Josh Simmons, CB Denzel Burke, and EDGE JT Tuimoloau, to name a few. The University of Iowa also has some aspiring 2025 NFL Draft prospects, like OG Sebastian Castro, DB Xavier Nwankpa, and RB Kaleb Johnson.

WATCH: Emeka Egbuka scores first touchdown of the day

WATCH: Emeka Egbuka scores first touchdown of the day #GoBucks

Ohio State football has kicked off against the Iowa Hawkeyes and it looks like the offense has picked up right where it left off last week as it marched right down the field and ended the drive with an Emeka Egbuka touchdown. There is still a substantial amount of time left in the first half and Egbuka has already left his mark on the stat sheet with three receptions for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Egbuka is currently the leading receiver for the Buckeyes, but we will see if it stays that way for long as Will Howard loves to spread the ball around and has already shared the love with four different receivers. Iowa has a reputation for being one of the strongest defenses in college football and OSU moved right through them on the first drive. Ohio State is currently leading the Hawkeyes, 7-0. Emeka Egbuka may shatter Ohio State football record

Ohio State football had a memorable win over Michigan State Saturday, and Emeka Egbuka inched closer to breaking this receiving record.

Ohio State football went up to East Lansing for the Buckeyes’ first real road test, and they came out with a dominant victory over Michigan State. Ohio State won 38-7, taking a 24-7 lead into the half.

While Jeremiah Smith was the receiver that caught most of the attention with his insane one-handed grabs, Emeka Egbuka, who has been Mr. Consistent for this team, led the team in receiving yards with 96.

He had seven receptions and a 33-yard touchdown as well. Here’s his top highlight from the game, outside of the numerous big-time blocks he had as well.

Egbuka inched closer to the Buckeyes’ all-time receiving record. Michael Jenkins, with bowl stats included, had 2,746 yards with Chris Olave second and Marvin Harrison Jr. fourth.

With this performance, Egbuka jumped Garrett Wilson to land 10th on the all-time list. He’s 76 yards shy of Santonio Holmes. In 528 yards, which he is certainly on pace to do with a 90.5-yard average and 8 games remaining, he will have the crown.

Emeka Egbuka on pace to break an Ohio State football record

Ohio State football’s Emeka Egbuka had a strong performance against Marshall and is on pace to set an all-time receiving record for the Buckeyes.

When you think of the best receivers in the Ohio State football history books, many don’t immediately go to Emeka Egbuka, but he’s closing in on an all-time record. Egubka is 624 yards away being from the Buckeyes all-time leading receiver.

In his fourth season as a Buckeye, Egbuka is chasing the current leader, Michael Jenkins. Recent names like Chris Olave (No. 2) and Marvin Harrison Jr. (No. 4) are high on the list as well.

Considering these records are including bowl game stats and there could be numerous games in the 12-team playoff format, there’s a good chance Egbuka could break the record should the Buckeyes finish out their nine games and get two more.

https://twitter.com/theblockspot/status/1838015515152826427

He is averaging 88.7 receiving yards per game now.

The Buckeyes will start their Big Ten play with the Michigan State Spartans at 7:30 p.m. ET on Peacock. They have nine more schedule games, and if Egbuka can continue his season average, he should be able to break the record within the last few weeks of November.

As the competition starts to heat up, Egbuka’s numbers may slip, so it’ll be interesting to see how the season progresses. For now, he’s on pace to set the record.

Saints shuffle their offensive line again in this 2025 mock draft

The New Orleans Saints shuffled their offensive line again in this 2025 mock draft. But would you have made the same decision?

So we missed the window for our usual “Mock Draft Monday” feature on a  2025 NFL draft prospect. That’s going to happen when the New Orleans Saints suffer key injuries and lose a very winnable game to end their surprising season-opening win streak. So we’re picking it up with a look at four different options in the upcoming draft class.

We took the draft order from Tankathon’s latest projection, which had the Saints slotted at No. 21, and used the Pro Football Focus mock draft simulator to pick for the 20 teams ahead of us.

This left us with several intriguing prospects. The best players available in PFF’s rankings include Kentucky defensive tackle Deone Walker, Texas left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., LSU right tackle Emery Jones Jr., and Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka. Those are some great options to choose from.

Jones is clearly going to be the local choice here — beyond starring at LSU, he’s a legit top-15 talent, and the Saints would be lucky to get him as a tone-setting sure thing at right tackle to replace Trevor Penning. But you could just as easily make the case for the other guys.

Walker could improve a run defense that allowed almost 7 yards per carry to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, and probably offer more interior pass rush than other guys on the roster. Nathan Shepherd and Khalen Saunders are both only signed through 2025.

Banks could also make sense for an offensive line pick. Taliese Fuaga has done a great job adjusting to left tackle, but many analysts predicted he could be a better fit at guard in the NFL. If Banks is a plug-and-play starter at left tackle, Fuaga could move inside or even go back to his college position on  the right side if the Saints find another answer at left guard.

And then you’ve got Egbuka, who was arguably the most-hyped player in this group. At one point he was seen as a potential top-five draft pick. He certainly has the talent but his production took a serious hit last season (after suffering ankle and knee injuries) and he’s still working to reassert himself in the upcoming draft class. We should also consider he’s got a similar build to Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed at a slight 6-foot-1, 205 pounds. How much does he add to the receiving corps?

In the end, we went with Banks. You can find receivers on the second day of the draft. Defensive tackle could be seen as a priority, sure, but realistically they’re going to play half as many snaps per game as one of the offensive linemen available here. And of the two offensive tackles available, Banks is a better prospect. He’s allowed half as many sacks and pressures as Jones on just 23 fewer snaps in pass protection, per PFF charting, while logging 233 more reps as a run blocker and drawing fewer penalty flags. They’ll both be 21-year old rookies (Banks is actually five days younger than Jones).

So who lines up where? We’re guessing Fuaga goes back to right tackle, Banks takes over on the left side, and Penning either tries out at left guard or is shown the door. Drafting Banks is not a perfect solution to their problems but this would be a big step in the right direction.

Still, at the end of the day we’re too far out from the draft to make any serious predictions. Who knows where the Saints will ultimately pick or whether someone like Banks is even going to be available? If nothing else this is a good reminder to watch Banks closely next Saturday  against  Mississippi State, and again on Oct. 12 in the “Red River Rivalry” game with Oklahoma. You can bet the Saints are keeping tabs on him.
