Chiefs’ Harrison Butker ruled out, Elliott Fry to kick vs. Steelers in Week 16

#Chiefs K Harrison Butker (Reserve/COVID-19) won’t play vs. the #Steelers due to his vaccination status. Newly-signed K Elliott Fry is set to kick according to a new report.

The Kansas City Chiefs will officially be without K Harrison Butker on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Butker will be ruled out for the Week 16 game due to his vaccination status. Butker was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Monday. He is unvaccinated per Rapoport, which means he’ll spend a mandatory 10 days on the Reserve/COVID-19 list in isolation before he’s allowed to be activated.

Thankfully, the Chiefs had the foresight to sign K Elliott Fry to the practice squad last week. Upon Butker’s placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the team signed Fry to the 53-man roster. That signaled that the team expected to be without Butker, but now we know the exact reason why.

Here’s some history on Fry from our article about him being signed to the 53-man roster:

“Fry most recently spent time with the Atlanta Falcons also as COVID-19 insurance, but he got his professional football start with Alliance of American Football league, playing for the Orlando Apollos, going a perfect 14-for-14 when he was with the now-defunct league. Since 2019, Fry has made stops with the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he only first appeared in a professional game in 2020 with the Falcons. He attempted a single 23-yard field goal, which he made, while also going 1-for-2 on extra points.”

Even with a solid replacement in Fry, the Chiefs will miss Butker this week. He’s 22-for-25 on field goals this season and 41-for-43 on extra points. He’s been most impressive at distance on field goals this season, breaking the franchise record for most 50-yard field goals in a single season.

Chiefs signing K Elliott Fry to 53-man roster from practice squad

After K Harrison Butker’s placement on the Reserve/COVID-19 list, the #Chiefs are signing K Elliott Fry to the 53-man roster from their practice squad.

The Kansas City Chiefs added K Elliott Fry as COVID-19 insurance last week and they’re cashing in on that decision just six days later. The team is opting to sign Fry to the 53-man roster following news that K Harrison Butker had tested positive for the virus and was subsequently placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Fry most recently spent time with the Atlanta Falcons also as COVID-19 insurance, but he got his professional football start with Alliance of American Football league, playing for the Orlando Apollos, going a perfect 14-for-14 when he was with the now-defunct league. Since 2019, Fry has made stops with the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but he only first appeared in a professional game in 2020 with the Falcons. He attempted a single 23-yard field goal, which he made, while also going 1-for-2 on extra points.

There is always a chance that Butker could test out of the COVID protocols. Under the league’s new policy, so long as a player is asymptomatic and vaccinated he needs just a single negative test in order to be activated from the Reserve/COVID-19 list. That said, the decision to sign Fry to the 53-man roster instead of protecting him on the practice squad signals that the team doesn’t expect Butker back this week.

Butker is one of the most consistent kickers in the league, especially when it comes to long-distance field goals. He’ll be missed, but it’s good to know the Chiefs were at least prepared and didn’t have to scramble to find a new kicker.

Chiefs to sign K Elliott Fry to practice squad

With COVID-19 cases on the rise throughout the league, the #Chiefs are signing K Elliott Fry to their practice squad according to a new report.

The Kansas City Chiefs are adding some special teams insurance on the practice squad with COVID-19 cases on the rise throughout the league.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs are set to sign kicker Elliott Fry to the practice squad. Most recently with the Atlanta Falcons also as COVID-19 insurance, Fry has bounced around the league since 2019, with stops in Chicago, Baltimore, Carolina and Tampa Bay. Fry has only appeared in one game back in 2020 with the Falcons, attempting and connecting on a single 23-yard field goal, while going 1-for-2 on extra points.

Fry got his professional football career started with the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football before they shut their doors, he was a perfect 14-for-14 with the Apollos. He kicked for the South Carolina Gamecocks in college where he was a near-perfect 161-of-162 on PATs and 66-of-88 on field goals.

The Chiefs had some free space on the practice squad after they signed DB Zayne Anderson to the 53-man roster on Tuesday. It’s not a big surprise to see them add another specialist to the practice squad. When COVID cases were spiking last season, they did the same thing with Tommy Townsend’s brother Johnny. This just gives Kansas City an extra layer of protection if Harrison Butker were to test positive for the virus.

Chargers sign kicker Dustin Hopkins

The Chargers have a new kicker.

The Chargers signed kicker Dustin Hopkins and waived Tristan Vizcaino on Tuesday, the team announced.

The decision to part ways with Vizcaino came after his array of struggles, most notably missing five extra points in six games. Furthermore, his kickoff touchback percentage was 41.94, which ranked 30th in the league.

Hopkins played seven seasons with Washington before being released last week. The reason for being let go of was because of his inconsistencies the past two seasons.

Hopkins missed seven of 34 field goal attempts, as well as two extra-point attempts. Through the first six games of 2021, he missed another two extra-point attempts and two field goals.

The 31-year old holds franchise records for highest field goal percentage (84.0 percent) and most field goals from 50 or more yards (14). He made 163 of his 194 field goal attempts in that timespan.

Aiding the special teams was a priority through the bye week, and head coach Brandon Staley made the point to address it with returner Andre Roberts and now Hopkins.

Chargers work out pair of kickers

The Chargers could be looking to resolve their kicking issues.

According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Chargers worked out kickers Dustin Hopkins and Elliott Fry on Tuesday.

One day after head coach Brandon Staley said he and the coaching staff were confident in Vizcaino, Los Angeles felt it was still in its best interest to check out some options to see if one might be capable of resolving the kicking issues.

Hopkins was recently let go of by Washington after serving as the team’s kicker from 2015. In those six years, Hopkins made 163 of his 194 field goal attempts (84%), with his best season coming in 2018, where he made 26 of his 29 attempts (89.7%), including 4-of-5 from over 50 yards.

Fry, on the other hand, recently spent time on the Falcons’ practice squad. Between his time with Atlanta, the Bears, Ravens, Panthers, and Buccaneers, Fry only had one field goal attempt. According to Yates, he went 9-for-10 in his workout for the Chargers, with his lone miss coming from 64 yards out.

Falcons release kicker Elliott Fry

Fry, 26, has now played for the Baltimore Ravens, Chicago Bears, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Falcons since going undrafted out of South Carolina in 2017.

The Falcons found their long-term answer at kicker in 2020. Younghoe Koo, a former unknown that signed with Atlanta during the bye week in 2019, made his first Pro Bowl this season.

Koo’s stellar 2020 campaign had a slight hiccup, though, when he injured his groin in a Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears. The Falcons would sign free-agent kicker Elliott Fry for their matchup against the Green Bay Packers the following week and Fry would go 1-for-2 on extra points and made his lone field goal attempt.

Koo returned the following week, leaving Fry on the practice squad for the remainder of the year. Finally on Tuesday, the team released Fry.

Elliott Fry will replace Falcons kicker Younghoe Koo in Week 4

The Falcons haven’t even wrapped up their final practice of the week and already three starters have been ruled out for Monday’s game

The Falcons haven’t even wrapped up their final practice of the week and already three starters have been ruled out for the team’s Week 4 matchup with the Packers on Monday Night Football.

Safeties Keanu Neal and Ricardo Allen won’t play, while kicker Younghoo Koo will miss the game with a groin injury. Plus the team will be without CB A.J. Terrell, who remains on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Replacing Neal and Allen will be Damontae Kazee and rookie Jaylinn Hawkins. Atlanta signed former undrafted free agent kicker Elliott Fry to the practice squad earlier this week in anticipation of Koo missing time.

Fry has very little experience, but the coaching staff expressed confidence in him on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons tried to replace veteran Matt Bryant entering the 2019 season, but struggled to find a decent kicker and wound up signing Bryant again before Week 1.

Koo emerged after the bye week last season was one of the few bright spots that helped the team win six of its final eight games. Check back for more practice updates later this afternoon.

Panthers sign former Buccaneers DE, Baylor CB, waive 2 players

Panthers sign two defensive free agents, waive kicker Elliott Fry plus another DB.

The Carolina Panthers have signed two more free agents today, according to a release on the official team website.

Carolina added to the defensive backs room by signing cornerback Derrek Thomas, who played for head coach Matt Rhule at both Temple and Baylor. After his college career was over he went undrafted, then he spent time with the Seahawks and Steelers in the offseason but did he not play in 2019.

The Panthers also added to the defensive line again, signing former Buccaneers defensive end DaVonte Lambert. He played 11 games for Tampa in 2016 but hasn’t been on the field in the regular season since.

In a pair of corresponding moves, the team waived kicker Elliott Fry and defensive back Dominique Hatfield.

As of yet, the Panthers have not announced the reported signing of former Chargers offensive lineman Michael Schofield, who we are projecting to be the new starter at left guard.
